    September 17 - September 23, 2007
We’ve got some outstanding music for you this week, covering a rather limited span in the Grateful Dead’s performing history, but it’s a span that includes some of the best years.

First up in our mid-September journey is Paris in 1974, where the Grateful Dead closed out their short tour of the continent. From 9/20/74, we have this very good Weather Report Suite>Stella Blue, and from the next night, 9/21/74, we have the second set jam featuring Seastones>Playing In The Band. It was rather rare for the band to join Phil and Ned during Seastones, but this jam works very well, and hits some remarkably deep spaces. One quick digression: while going through the Grateful Dead Movie’s outtakes in preparation for the DVD production, we came across some footage of the band getting together in a dressing room before the show on 10/16/74, the first night at Winterland. Evidently, they hadn’t seen each other since the end of the Europe tour, and while talking about the excellent music on that tour, Billy begins raving about the high quality of the recordings from the Europe tour, to which the rest of the band responds that they found the recordings equally impressive. Certainly some of Kidd’s best 2-track work.

Going back a few years, we are pleased to play a couple of jams from 9/21/68. This material is drawn from a very interesting tape, in that it features Phil, Jerry and Mickey, plus a couple of guest musicians, in a studio jam right in the midst of the period in which the Mickey and the Hartbeats shows were being performed without Bobby and Pigpen. From this studio session, we have a nice Clementine Jam and another very interesting Jam.

We’re going to take a detour away from our featured week and head off to May, 1973, specifically 5/13/73 in Des Moines, Iowa. From that excellent, long show (the first of three consecutive long shows in May, with 5/20 in Santa Barbara and 5/26 in San Francisco being the others), we have Here Comes Sunshine and a nice, long and spacey Playing In The Band from the second set, and from the first set we have the rocking combination of Don’t Ease Me In>Around and Around.

Finally this week, and in memory of Corinne Crawford from Berkeley and Vermont, is the mournful Death Don’t Have No Mercy from 2/28/69.

As always, we welcome your comments and questions. Feel free to write about anything. And be sure to check back in next week when we’ll have some stellar music from 1972, 1976 and 1981.

    'garbadge truck theory'
tj crowleytigerlilly...as the garbadge trucks drives thru cities/towns/neighborhood picking up assorted types of garbadge eventulaly needs to unload at a site..people tend to be the same..picking up stresser's,,frustration..dis-appointment(s) etc..and need to find a place to dump..along comes something that permits this dumping and plow it hits.....people are easiliy gathered to rally around the flag of anger w/o knowing exactly why or hwere ALL the nager is coming from...kinda like a pressure cooker..that's what king george the 'W" did with that instrumental (cia organized) incident in nyc w/ the twin towers...rallied the whole (wqell..most of it) amerikan population around that flag and permitted him to dictate the direction taken...makes sense?

    addendum
oops, forgot to explain-That's Captain Beefheart's 10 commandments for guitarists. There was just a tribute to his music here in Detroit so it was on my mind... And for the record it came AFTER cosmicbadger's comment, so, um, it makes more sense if you see it that way...

I will slap the first & last man to insult Izzie. She will forever be held high, in higher standing than the water that flows beneath our toes, as we walk out of the departed Seas. But, what REALLY disturbs me, is the inexplicable, unpleasant fact that something may be seriously wrong with The Badger! I mean, is our cosmic guiding light actually succumbing to the gravitational pull of corporate hedgehogs-dom? PLEASE, say it aint so... Hang in there, folks. Better times are behind us, see?

The sentiment of this current flap reminds me of some of the rancor that various (and specific) persons subjected all of us to, on the 'old site'. Anger, testosterone, name-calling, and even threats, first veiled and then specific, were hurled about as if that might make some real difference when there are true differences of opinion. You will never be able to convince someone by use of an aggressive tirade. They MAY listen to you, if you make your point in an articulate and respectful manner. And then they still could disagree and/or state that things are just the way they are. There can be more than one 'truth" on such issues. People can honestly hold opposite opinions, and genuinely see things very differently. Once upon a time persons out of control (by choice) decided to topple a fence and invade a Dead concert. The band didn't take that incident lightly, and indicated to all of us that they expected people to treat each other better, or they could take the show off the road. (See their letter published in GD Almanac Summer issue 1995.) Nobody is making you visit this site, if it incites you so. (Did that rhyme, or did I just sound like Dr. Seuss. Shit, my parenthood is showing). There are people that participated in that 'old site' that decided to not visit or contribute here. They did not and do not like the changes with this site. So they decided to go elsewhere. Fair enough. It just comes down to your truth. Are you convinced by someone holding another opinion that rails and spews venom at you? I bet not. For a while, back in the day, the GOGD were touring often. Back in my day, they would even play 3 sets. Years later some changes were made. Not playing shows as often and not playing as long a show as I was used to. I could have decided to not go see them anymore because they weren't giving me all I wanted. I could have went to the show and complained long and loud to anyone and everyone that would have to hear me (instead of the MUSIC). But I didn't, and I continued to see them for what they would and could share. And I continue to gratefully drink from that cup. There is a West African proverb "You see the Hut, yet you continue to ask 'Where shall I go for shelter?'" Take care.

Let me just note in passing, to the small subset of posters who are rendering this topic a toxic waste dump squabbling amongst themselves with off-topic material, that they are in violation of several provisions of our extremely user-friendly TOS and likely to find themselves in a timeout. In particular in this instance, homophobic comments will not be tolerated. Further, amid all the appendage-waving about lawsuits, please note that the aforementioned TOS explicitly state that the poster, and the poster alone, is responsible for the content of said poster's comments, and that Rhino is not. Also please note that the TOS explicitly state that Izzie or I may remove any post for any reason at any time. Historically we've been darn light-handed with this and we'd like to keep it that way, but if we have to engage in wholesale removal of toxic spew for the sake of the general citizenry, we will. Chill or be chilled. Thank you.

people wouldn't get upset at loosing the ability to download these feeds and listen to them on their ipods? The fact that many (and you can include me here as well) are willing TO PAY for these tidbits speaks volumes about the interest in having these feeds in an easier to listen to format. And that various members are really angry at the TOTAL lack of a response to that suggestion, well, no wonder there is so much invective floating about, and I see that PatRhino is looking in, but instead of offering a corporate response to the pay-for inquiry, the response is to shut off people or are, rightfully or not, PO'ed It is logical to assume from the title of this site that these were available to the public, and that many took advantage to do so without thinking that that was wrong, tape trading is a time-honored tradition in the GD community without a pay-for caveat, to suggest otherwise is simple nonsense (to put it politely) I have sure spent a fair amount of coin on GD recordings, and will probably do so in the future as well, but for the powers to be not to see this s'storm coming is remarkable in its lack of foresight, and to not provide a reasonable explanation (if for no other reason but to put minds at ease and not come off as some kind of corporate shakedown) just puts fuel on the fire.... At any rate, I heard a version of "Hot To Handle" on youtube, performed at the hollywood palladium, guessing a '69 or '70 performance, really hot! Can anyone tell me what the date of that performance is, and is it available, best one I have heard with Pig...please feel free to email me that info, thanks! Here comes my own little personal attack ... curious to see if it gets taken down ... Re-reading this whole thread gives me the powerful suspicion that red8sox and ShipoFools are one and the same person ... check out their posts. They are both "pathetically sad," among other stylistic similarities. I'll also publicly call out red8sox as a poser. He posted here last week about how the situation here had forced him to connect with people to find other sources for music (I'm paraphrasing), but I guess he's been too busy since then thinking up dumb insults to answer a brother's private message asking him to pass this info along. Don't bogart that url, my friend! (Actually it was fun and ridiculously easy to find those places on my own, but it was annoying to be ignored, and I'm always up for outing a hypocrite ... ) (To anyone who is where I was last week, just go google the words "bit torrent." You'll see.) Also love the two guys (one of whom is ShipoFools; both of whom may be red8sox) who were full of "legal advice" to red8sox about "slander" but clearly had no problem with the homophobic underpinnings of butterbean's post. (Sorry, old bean, I'm sure you're a wonderful human bean and wouldn't have posted that if you'd stopped to think about it, but the fact remains you sent it out there in all its unthinking ugliness.) I have two pieces of advice for you: don't take any legal advice from anyone who doesn't know the difference between libel and slander, or from anyone who tries to convince there's a big payday in having your online hatred censored ... Finally, as many have said, izzie has been doing an amazing job for the last month here in the monkey house, and at this point has very little poo on her: I do think it's up to all of us to see that she stays that way. Peace.

Is This Off-Topic? 9/17/1982, Cumberland County Civic Center - Twenty-five years ago today was one of the musical highlights of my life: first ever Throwing Stones, the brand new Touch of Grey, the incredible closing run of Spanish Jam>The Other One>Goin' Down The Road>Morning Dew>Sugar Magnolia. It's a shame we couldn't have heard some of that today, but maybe it's being saved for a release (I always hope about my favorite shows ...) izzie, do you ever sleep?

You'll need to register for most of them, and may have to try a few times. Using these sites, and former delights like gdlive.com and tol, I have over 800 shows on my HD, and much of what David has posted here I have already. Get in there. http://bt.etree.org/ http://jeromesplace.net/ http://shnflac.net (problems at the mo, up and down like a tart's knickers) http://www.cotapers.org/ stuff here on and off as well http://www.thetradersden.org http://www.dimeadozen.org/ European deadheads - you can subscribe to Sirius on the internet, if that suits. Me, I'll stick to http://www.gdradio.net/ http://www.sugarmegs.org/ http://nugs.net/ Pisser about the downloads, sure, but with a little application, large amounts of what David has posted is out there roaming the internet - am constantly surprised at the number of deadheads who are not aware of this. And then - there's always TRADING! HTH JP, the Limey Bastard who loves the Dead with all his heart.

An hour or so after I last posted here we had a huge electrical storm, flash, bang, crash, power out, leaking roof everything. Fifteen hours later the storm is still blowing. Now I know what happens to those who whine! Black helicopters with a curious one-horned logo seeding the clouds with electricity and biblical deluges. Sorry I won’t do it again. So I went back to TS to see how things are there and was immensely cheered up to see you have had your own e-storm. DeadHeads kickin’ and a gougin’ in the mud and blood and the beer. Yeeeeehah. And with so many mails out of order or deleted the whole thing becomes a piece of live Dadaist performance art. So now everyone’s standing around, panting hard, adrenaline easing up a bit, staring forlornly at their ripped up tie dies. Cut to the same scene but viewed from above, pulling back higher and higher as the image from the shiny satellite with the curious one horned logo is transmitted to a giant screen in the corporate HQ of RICHER DONORS Inc. Half a dozen smart-dressed people are sat around a huge onyx table watching the screen….(in the corner of the room PatRhino is sitting at the Dead.net console a single tear rolling down his cheek) . From the head of the table a sinister voice breaks the silence ‘Excellent, everything just as we planned….Phase 1 has been successfully completed’

I absolutely love the weekly selection of music from Taper Section...it had become a Monday morning tradition before work to download some key tunes and hit the road. The fact that it was free of course made it especially kind. I suppose I too would agree to pay an annual subscription to continue to download the Taper Section, if that's what needed to happen. Any chance of this?

you wrote: "I am sorry that you think the Grateful Dead suck....you obviously have very little taste in music, but if you feel that way, you should be able to post that sentiment or any other feelings you have. That is the point. The Dead blew me away over 100 times in live shows all over this country and others, and nothing I have posted has ever said anything negative about the Dead. They probably have very little to do with this site or the "heads" running it. Censoring ideas and opinions is wrong. Also, to call this the "taper's section" is close to being offensive. I again will share with anyone and everyone the hundreds and hundreds of hours of soundboard that I have. This section has very little to do with the actual spirit that once existed amongst tapers and heads in general." if i really thought the gd sucked, why on earth would i be at this website? and to state that i have very little taste in music is an unnecessary insult. my post was meant to be very much ironic, especially since i requested more music and complimented david l after my 'suck' comment. does anybody here remember laughter? i'm not sure that this is the area for any negativity. the downloads are gone. the streaming works just fine. there are even ways to record the streaming. it isn't a great situation, but it is better than NOTHING, which is what i fear we will have soon. get over it. move on. find a friend who can help you with the streaming if you are having difficulties. find a place with a wifi connection and have a cup of coffee as you listen. relax! but shouldn't we simply be discussing the music offered here instead of harping on every other subject under the sun? let's get back to some simplicity. and some reality.

enjoying the ride! Plenty of us do. Look at cosmicbadger's posts in this thread, for example. Or Sunshine Daydream talking about repeating himself. Are people valiantly trying to get comments back on track and within reason. I think you are 900% correct with this statement "but shouldn't we simply discussing the music offered here instead of harping on every other subject under the sun" Applause! Harping can be done in other threads, so long as we are not insulting anybody directly. And THAT was meant to be a joke, just so nobody is confused.

The Tapers Section has been a great source for "new" GD music for almost a year. I really appreciate the hard and thoughful work that goes into this endeavor each week. But I wanted to add voice to those asking for a way to d'load these tracks again. Since this site went to streaming, I have not been able to listen to them (my work computer doesn't have Quicktime, and my home computer is too slow). David, is there any chance that Rhino will allow folks to subscribe to the Tapers Section for a nominal fee each week/month? Is there any chance that you can post this stuff on iTunes as either a Podcast or downloadable tracks? And where is the announcement the "very cool releases and programs"? Patiently yours...

Both here and on the GD Hour pages. Really like the added details myself, creating a new listening experience, that is best enjoyed online, so I can read back as I listen to the selection. Nice for a novice trying to train a set of ears. And I still have to explore all the links, I am sure they enhance the whole journey as well. So in more words than really necessary: I enjoy your work, please keep it coming, and exploring new audio frontiers, well I guess I am gonna have to give in sooner or later... yep, I went and captured real audio when I could have found some samples, but hey, I know which one I deemed more of an adventure. Now to learn to get the captured sound onto the laptop, so I can tweak it with tools, all fer kicks and slaps! (And hopefully keep me outta trouble, lol.) I am so glad that there is a duality of band released and audience recordings, kinda really creates a huge amount of material (I imagine.) Nice to get highlights and a bit of a guided tour.
