    ...this show was off the hook from the very get go. The Casey Jones is the best I've heard... beginning a jam that goes through each member going off on an instrumental solo. Back-to-back complete previously unreleased shows on 4CDs? You betcha! Why? Because we couldn't pick one over the other of these two nights that have been described as "fire," "mind-frying," and "crispy" (bit of a theme here) too many times to count.     Being old school, I find having it in front of me helps to both explore new territory and to document where we’ve been etc. For me, that’s Deadbase 10. I have 50, but I only use that to correct or fill in gaps.
    I write In 10 to highlight and document shows: at, released, and listened to, and it’s easy to check out set lists etc, which I find interesting and helpful. From there you can check out possible ideas, then use comments on archive etc, and that sometimes will give the the hell yeah vibe your looking for! Of course Like anything on the internet involving opinions, use caution, but sometimes you’ll find a show with a lot of reviews, and all highly favorable. Not a guarantee that you’ll like it, but a good way to start.
    Sometimes you can find gold by picking unreleased shows from an overall hot tour, or if several hot shows from a run or two have been released, then sometimes the one they didn’t go with is good too. I.e., 3/30/88 that we did on POTDWD. Nice show perhaps overlooked by it’s released neighbors. Or 71 Caps…or…
    This is why some of us like POTDWD as we try to find good shows that we haven’t heard before, which kinda sounds to me like what your looking for?
    Really, it just comes down to putting in the work and actually listening to shows, especially ones not on the radar, and learning what you like.

    As far as voting. Nice idea but I think there’d be potential for huge sample bias. No offense to anyone, but I think the active demographic here on dnet is pretty biased in what they like comparatively, which is fine.
    Perhaps the lurkers prefer a more comprehensive view, but being lurkers, we don’t know lol.

    Perhaps they could do a survey using subscribers since we’re probably the ones most invested in all this. You might suffer sample bias via subscribers who only purchase to resell, but, they are subscribers, and you wouldn’t think they’d encompass a high percentage of the sample, but who knows? I often wonder how many subs are resellers?

    Anyhoo, just ment to say I find documentation to be key, good luck!

    That would be cool to vote on one!
    It would create a lot of interest even if your choice wasn't picked.
    I'm guessing Dave L. does most of the work but has influencers.
    Committee sounds a bit formal for this bunch.
    I need a 8-30,31-1978 Red Rocks four disc release if I'm going to vote.

    Really hot shows

    Hey Icecrmcnkd I get what you're saying. I think my biggest problem is that I have so many shows I don't know what to pick anymore and can't always remember the hot shows( it sucks getting old!) and use the new releases to whet my appetite. The other problem is I don't know what I want, I was never a tape trader and most of what I listen to are releases or bootlegs so I'm not sure of what's out there. There is also an app called Attics that has I believe almost every show and multiple versions like Archive. I should really start digging into that. I think it still would be pretty cool to do at least one voted on DP though.

    Really hot shows

    DaP 42 +bonus and DaP 43 seemed pretty hot to me.
    I think that DaP 46 +bonus might be pretty good too.

    That’s within about a 12-month span.
    Seems that the committee has been delivering good pre-hiatus shows on a fairly regular basis, while also delivering post-hiatus shows which many people also want.

    If Dave isn’t releasing what you want when you want it, stream it from the archive or get it from the torrents. If it’s not available by those methods then you’ll just have to wait for Dave to release it. It’s not even that hard, Doc often offers up shows, you just have to PM him and ask.

    Yesterday I listened to
    GD 1971-12-15 149966.sbd.mr.miller (recorded by Ramrod).
    That was pretty good, especially the Dark Star. Listened to the Dark Star twice in fact.
    I think that when 12-14-71 was released some people complained that Dave didn’t choose 12-15 instead. If/when Dave releases 12-15-71 I can imagine that someone will complain about back-to-back shows with Run Rudolph Run having been released.

    The Let It Grows from 7-13 and 7-18 were interesting, seemed different than the ones from June 76 although I haven't done a comparison.

    I’ll throw out shows to vote on, 12-18-73 paired with a new issue of 12-19-73, both Plangentized/Normanized.
    Could even put them in a 1973 50th anniversary Box containing shows from Nov/Dec since the 73 shows with ABB will have to come out in a separate ABB-approved Box.

    Peteh - that's a good idea about having a vote on what would make good further releases. Makes more sense than having a few people guess what the punters want on the basis of past sales or whatever. I'm definitely in favour of obscure great shows rather than well known average ones, too.
    I have always assumed that there is a committee that picks the Dave's releases, and that he is the spokesman for this committee.

    Just a thought on releases

    I rarely post but do read posts, mostly the DP45 posts, and there are quite a few posts on what would be a preferable release, whether it be the box set, DPs, or special editions like the 50th stuff. What got me thinking is I just got, believe it or not, the the 3-10-81 show from In And Out Of The Garden. I had gotten two 3-9-81 shows in the box I got for Christmas from my wife and just got the replacement a couple of days ago. It took awhile but I got it so no worries there. I loaded it on my phone and listened to it. Not a bad show, not a great show and listening to it without the excitement or adrenaline rush I get whenever I get a new release, it was enjoyable but not really memorable or one I would listen to again soon, as were all the other shows in this box, and one of my judging criteria of the shows is if I want to listen again right away or very soon thereafter, that's a really good show to me. I know there are many factors that go into a release and sales are the bottom line obviously but maybe a simplified thought process is what's needed. A great/very good show or run of shows period. No special frills or big boxes. I have every box set released including Fillmore 69 and who has room for any more box sets. Maybe a return to the simpler boxes like The Fillmore or even another download series. Even the DP releases. I don't know if Dave is the one and only person who decides on what's released or if there is some kind of committee and I know that everyone tastes/likes are different but for the most part I think most Deadheads can agree on what is a really hot show. Not one that has a good story behind it or that is more marketable than others but just a really good show. Maybe even some kind of voting that can be done on dead.net from a list of releasable shows from the vault. The move definitely is going to vinyl. I don't do vinyl and do most of my listening either in my truck or on headphones working around the house or in the yard so it just doesn't work for me. I just have an insatiable appetite for really good shows and personally haven't heard a new one for awhile. Maybe that's why the releases are not selling as well lately. Who knows. I'll keep buying whatever is released but I/ we're due for a plain old hot show release.

Chill with lambasting the sound quality of Dave's 45. If you only listen to the first two tracks (Promised Land & They Love Each Other), as Dave himself explains on the Seaside Chat, you're listening to Bob Menke's audience recording. There's no soundboard of those two tracks and Bob kindly provided his tape. Some have said that the Smith/Miller/Clugston aud (140589) on the Archive is a little better than the Menke. In any case, once you get past those two, you're hearing "recently" recovered Betty Boards from the stash of soundboards returned by ABCD Enterprises. The changeover to soundboard actually happens before the end of They Love Each Other. Check out Dave's Seaside Chat for more.

The two shows on Dave's 45's 4 CDs are great sounding once they reach cruising altitude.

I get where you're coming from. My main complaint on sound on many DiPs and DaPs is the drums are too loud. I used to blame Mickey for being involved in the remastering, lol. But to have two shows for the price of one totally outweighs the defects, and frankly that's what the tone controls are for on our stereos. And I also applaud Dave for being brave enough to get us the two shows with an aud. patch at the beginning. Patches are something they don't do very often and only when it's worth it. Especially, these two shows are so worth it. Don't give up on it.

I remember getting this on cassette in the late 80s and loved both shows even if there was "some" missing. I have listened to this release several times and I love it. My question is: how is this still available? I've noticed the last few Dave's releases have been selling at a slower pace than just a few years ago. Just wondering, maybe the uptick to 25,000 units was a bit much? Anyway, have a safe happy holiday.
