We know where you've been and we're taking you back with the twice as nice DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 45: PARAMOUNT THEATRE, PORTLAND, OR - 10/1/77 & 10/2/77. Back-to-back complete previously unreleased shows on 4CDs? You betcha! Why? Because we couldn't pick one over the other of these two nights that have been described as "fire," "mind-frying," and "crispy" (bit of a theme here) too many times to count. Witness it for yourself when you dig into the inventive medleys and pristine sound, not to mention the first "Dupree's Diamond Blues" since '69 and the first live "Casey Jones" since '74.

Limited to 25,000 numbered copies, this release was recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson (with a boost from Bob Menke, more about that in David's video) and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. Grab a copy while you can.

I remember getting this on cassette in the late 80s and loved both shows even if there was "some" missing. I have listened to this release several times and I love it. My question is: how is this still available? I've noticed the last few Dave's releases have been selling at a slower pace than just a few years ago. Just wondering, maybe the uptick to 25,000 units was a bit much? Anyway, have a safe happy holiday.

I get where you're coming from. My main complaint on sound on many DiPs and DaPs is the drums are too loud. I used to blame Mickey for being involved in the remastering, lol. But to have two shows for the price of one totally outweighs the defects, and frankly that's what the tone controls are for on our stereos. And I also applaud Dave for being brave enough to get us the two shows with an aud. patch at the beginning. Patches are something they don't do very often and only when it's worth it. Especially, these two shows are so worth it. Don't give up on it.
    Cheers

Both Dave's 45 shows are Betty Boards except. . .

Chill with lambasting the sound quality of Dave's 45. If you only listen to the first two tracks (Promised Land & They Love Each Other), as Dave himself explains on the Seaside Chat, you're listening to Bob Menke's audience recording. There's no soundboard of those two tracks and Bob kindly provided his tape. Some have said that the Smith/Miller/Clugston aud (140589) on the Archive is a little better than the Menke. In any case, once you get past those two, you're hearing "recently" recovered Betty Boards from the stash of soundboards returned by ABCD Enterprises. The changeover to soundboard actually happens before the end of They Love Each Other. Check out Dave's Seaside Chat for more.

The two shows on Dave's 45's 4 CDs are great sounding once they reach cruising altitude.

These have been around for a while. (2008 or earlier?)
The stupidest thing is you wear them over your ears.
Why would you tuck your ears under?
Pretty sure even a few pro golfers wear them.
And of course one must leave on the holographic sticker to show it is genuine.
Look! I'm stupid enough to pay extra for the "official" hat.
I've got like 30 ball caps and I doubt if I paid for more than a couple.
Well OK, I bought the "stealie" GD truckers (mesh vented) hat. Rant over.

Might As Well get one of those plaid hunting caps with fur lining.

Except instead of plaid it will be tie dye, and instead of fur it will be organic cotton, and instead of a hunting cap it will be called a cosmic mushroom foraging hat that your wear while whacking mushrooms with the cosmic axe.

How bout the Fire on the Mountain flame throwing fire starter, a nice Pig Pen wife beater shirt (his face on front), Ground Score water resistant satchel (for upon scoring that 8 ball of blow you found on the floor on your way out the GA show, you now have a safe place to stash it), Wall of Sound headphones: they make whatever crappy gear your using sound like the wall, using special state of the art technology utilizing your head cavity via AI tech that accurately replicates the sound and sensation of a JBL 15” speaker resonating in your scull, and hey…”it’s not a purse, it’s a satchel”

They must be simply farming out the product.
They could choose to have better vendors if they wanted to.
Likely why everything costs so much. Double mark-ups.
The vendor doubles his cost, then the "store" doubles that.
More typical for fashion or jewelry at retail.
But whoever is choosing what selection is offered is at fault in the end.
Back to regularly scheduled programming.

Re 1st shows comment. If so, then whatever company they are farming out to is trash. That camping poster is embarrassing to even look at, let alone own. $75? GTFO of here. Farm it out to Liquid Blue! Or one of several dye people on Instagram or Etsy that create incredible products.
Or take notes from Phish's dry goods.
Regardless, cut the damn cord already.

...today was...Have family from LA visiting....we left early this morning for Page AZ and I put my family on a smooth water raft trip from the Glen Canyon Dam to Lee's Ferry...stone cold city people and they had a blast....we drove down and picked them up at Lee's Ferry...it was great sitting and listening to the Colorado River sing sweet songs to rock our soul as the Mrs and I waited for the rafts...when the rafts came in we grabbed our guests and drove along the Vermillion Cliffs for a bit taking touristy pictures...we drove back to Navajo Bridge that crosses over the Colorado...we walked over the pedestrian bridge and my niece looked up and said "Those birds are big!" Of course they were Condors and everyone on the bridge looked up and started snapping shots...suddenly one of them did a big swoop and dive...I thought the Condor was diving under the bridge (700 ft above the river) but at the last second did a helluva move and ended up sitting on the hand rail of the bridge....it was about 30 ft from us and sat there for quite awhile... we all took a bunch of pictures and all the folk there were very polite and stayed a safe distance from the animal and also were pretty quiet...after a bit the Condor spun and dropped off of the railing and swooped back to the south and spun and turned for the bottom of the vehicle bridge next to us...the Condor pulled up to a large ledge underneath the bridge and had a sit...that's when Robyn noticed two small hatchlings sitting there looking around....Mom sat about twenty feet from them...amazing...the weather was perfect, about 65 degrees or so, sunny and no wind...good to get out and about after our snowy winter here...

Funny that this release still hasn't sold out. This is the fist Dave's to not sell out quickly in my memory. Correct?
I've bought less music this year as so many other things have gone up in price. I have to believe that's a factor.

I've enjoyed this release. The sound is unique to my ears. There's still some of the more mellow side of 77 from the spring and less high octane like the November shows. I like it a lot. Those late fall 77 shows have never completely grabbed me. Jerry is on fire throughout this.

I've been listening a lot to the second disc. That second set is great. I like the Dancing that forms from the transition to drums.

Take care all. Turn it up!

....where does the time go.
Plowed through half of Fahrenheit 451 in one sitting. Been awhile since I could say that regarding a book. Gains traction fast. My ADD sometimes makes it hard to focus on constant paragraphs, if that makes sense. Mind tends to wander. But this, this broke that trend.
No. This was not required reading at my high school. Better late than never though!
Seems like Bradbury kinda predicted the future unfortunately so far.
No spoilers please.
VGK at 101 pts.

Great surf band, Messer Chups, discovered on youtube yesterday. Their albums seem to cost a fortune, but there seems to be a ton of video clips here.
Also saw a cool clip from a programme called "Wednesday" of young people dancing to The Cramps "Goo Goo Muck". All is not lost.

Yes Oro, 6-9-91 Buckeye Lake was number two in a fan list I saw.
3-17-91 Cap. Center Landover MD beat it out. I'll check those out.
But the list is weird as someone picked Englishtown '77 and I don't see that on the setlist. Maybe a sound check? It would have been an early one as the album hadn't even been released yet. Is 6-9-91 a Bruce show? I could see him doing some accordion on that song. I'll look for other JGB versions too. 11-23-77 Palace Theater Waterbury CT was mentioned.

Got my "copy" today, opened box it was sealed in and it was the wrong album! It was Garcia's Reflections.

Anyone else get this album and had the wrong lp in box?

Working with Amazon as I type. We'll see how this goes :-)

I'm willing to keep the Reflections lp, just don't want to pay same price as GarciaLive 14 AND I still want GarciaLive.

Took a little effort with the language barrier. But if I understand right they are sending me a replacement vol 14 and have told me to keep the reflections,,,,, I think,,,, if I understood Travis right. Travis is a common name in India, right? :-)

The guy originally wanted me to mail back reflections. I'm like, wait I want reflections, generate a sale for it and replace garcialive. Around this mulberry bush a load of times, finally "a supervisor", said to just keep it. Well see.

I still have to wonder if warner/rhino packaged a shit load of garcialive wrong?

I'll let you know what happens.

According to DB there were only 4 Dead versions:
3/17/91
3/27/91: no Bruce
4/7/91
6/9/91: there’s video of this one on the GD uussstube channel, not sure about the rest?

I’m sure I saw JGB do it on occasion.

Correctamundio VGuy - The Day of the Dead is a terrific box set, and a real mix of talent - some bigger names (The National, Wilco, Lucinda Williams), among a batch of up and comers. Nice to see this Grateful Dead Songbook pass on to the next generation.
The Gold Standard for me is still Deadicated, the wonderful tribute album from the early 90s. A great lineup, including Bruce, Elvis, and Perry Farrell, and late greats like Zevon & Lindley! Best of all - The Harshed Mellows!
If anyone should be rigged out in this Cosmic Camping gear (and getting their asses kicked by all the other campers in the area for doing so) it should be The Harshed Mellows.

Love the Day of the Dead box, every disc is great. Was recently thinking about the box and Bonnie "Prince" Billy because along with Reuben and Cherise, BPB covers If I Had The World To Give, which was at the heart of 11/20/78, a Pick of the Day a couple of weeks ago. He also sang it live in the studio of the CBS Morning Show, the video is easily found, and it is absolutely and completely beautiful. And yesterday evening, before VGuy posted, I had sought out another Bonnie "Prince" Billy video - No Time to Cry - which is from the vinyl of Best Troubador (a Merle Haggard tribute album I think.) Learned that No Time to Cry was written by Iris Demint. Another truly beautiful song. Saw Jerry and John Kahn play Reuben and Cherise at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago July 1982. Here's to a good week ahead.

Just watched this video from the Giants Box last night-wow really enjoyable. The encouraging looks Jerry gives Bruce are priceless. And the sound...awesome! I think the later shows were 24 track, yes?
Sure sounds like it. I think I will have to revisit this box after I finish the Garden box and Dave's 45. How lucky are we dead fans? Such a bounty of audio wealth.

Hey NC!
I just watched this last WE, and yeah, forgot how much I liked it.
The audio alone is worth the price of admission!
Extra fun in Auro 3D immersive!
I believe they had something like 48, 64, or 96 channels or some crazy number since it was produced with I believe ABC for some late night In Concert show or something? So typical GD got the network to pull, all the stops lol.

EDIT: I’m referencing the 91 shows, or at least the Blu-ray, the 89 shows are multitrack 24? as all shows from summer 89 through spring 90 I believe we’re recorded multitrack for the live album that became With Out A Net.
Still boggles my mind they haven’t released more of them! Hashtag RELEASE THE MULTIs lol

Well the replacement copy of GL14 came last night.

Failed.

As I worried, it was another Reflections album wrapped in a GarciaLive cardboard shipping sleeve!

I gonna try for another replacement,,,, maybe. Might just send back and order one from garcia com (and hope it's the right one). I think warner/rhino has labeled the wrong album,,, might get the same results from jerry's site.

Anyone else buy this?

UPDATE - I guess amazon is out of stock OR they've pulled copies because I'm not the only one to complain,,, but I could only return this second copy. I've ordered a copy from the garcia site. Cost a few bucks more than amazon, but I did get a free copy of Reflections! So at this point a few bucks up I guess,,,,,, as long as the copy from jerry is the right album!

Now we just wait :-)

Companies can make shipping errors - that is expected. I worked for a major vehicle manufacturer in my career, and the wisdom was that customers should know problems may happen - a car has 10,000 individual parts, so if .5% of them malfunction, that is 50 parts - usually it is one part, well within an acceptable margin of error. So if a company makes good on their shipping error, costs absorbed, and apologies all round, it should be good. But to do it twice, after carefully explaining to them what the problem was in the first place - that’s on them, wholly. Not someone you want to do business with. Warning Will Robinson!

Speaking of vehicles, we just purchased a new one. Instead of the salesperson running through features of the brakes or the steering etc, it’s all about the computer screen vehicles have now. I thought I was getting a Google lesson. You are buying a laptop with wheels now. Didn’t even cover the sound system, such as it is. The last car we bought for the wife about 4 years ago, I must have been thinking out loud and said “Oh! No CD player”. The salesman gives me this look like I was a Luddite, and I swear I was going to smack him if he said “Ok Boomer”, but he just mumbled about the “new technology”.

Hey Nitecat and OB,

The 91 shows were actually 48 track recordings. I remember Dave talked about this when the box was released. And yes, the 89 shows were 24. 87 was definitely not a multi track.

Hey aren't we supposed to get a new Dave's Picks this month?

Just heard from Rhino, #45 actually sold out in January, they just forgot to update the site.

My last in person car purchase - I brought a copy of 5/26/72 on CD. The salesman shows me car. I open and close the door. Sounds solid enough.

Let’s hear the sound system. I put in a CD and listen for a minute or so. I get back out.

Ready for a test drive?

Nope. I’ll take it.

The Sabres are running out of time. Too little, too late.

Beware of the Oilers and Avs. Both are hot right now.

Had to purchase a car unexpectedly last year.
Not fun. Supply and demand bs being exploited by the man: no haggling, give us a down payment sight unseen and no test drive. I ask the guy “ what if we give you this big, nonrefundable deposit, wait a month for delivery, then test drive it and think it’s not right”? But I digress. So, since you either had to wait forever, or just take what little was available, we went with one that had more upgrades then we would have normally paid for, but it did have an upgraded JBL system, which is nice, but not sure it’s worth what it cost…ce la vie.
But yeah Mike, it was all about the phuching screen and more crap to break that you don’t need.
But hey, I don’t get to drive it, I just paid for it lol. The other one does love now having serious XM, though she’s become addicted to yacht rock lol. I really like the jazz station, and on the rare occasion I do get to drive it, it’s nice to have the GD channel!

Jack - That’s hilarious! One can never go wrong with a little Europe ‘72 coming from the speakers!
Agree on the Sabres - their goaltending was their Achilles Heel in the end. If they tighten up their defence in the off season, they are a definite team going places.

Oro - My best friend growing up became a heavy duty mechanic, and he always believed in the KISS rule on vehicles - When it comes to accessories and thingamabobs, Keep It Simple Stupid, and party every night!!

Go Leafs Go! My youngest told me today he tried to get playoff tickets, he said the resale on resale made Taylor Swift’s nightmare with TicketBastard look like child’s play. Ticket sellers are organized crime, IMHO. All of us grew up with $6, $10, $12 concert tickets, and now, all this!!!

I was able to start the checkout process on 2 copies. It rejected anything over 2. It also, strangely enough discounted the shipping to free. It seems to me they really haven't sold out. If it was a 1968 show with a 45 minute Alligator, I think it would have sold out in minutes. Wonder if such a thing exists anywhere...

Hey Nitecat, yes, both 91 shows were recorded in 48 track. I was wrong about the 87 show as that one was also recorded in multi track. I need to go back and listen to that show again as my memory is it didn't sound as good as the other four in the box.

Anyway, this was the last Multi Track box. We are due for another one. Hopefully this year.

Probably common knowledge, but according to Mickey Hart, the first time he played with the Dead, on 9/29/67, they played an Alligator-Caution that was about 2 hours long. I don't know if it's available anywhere, though. And just because it's true doesn't mean it actually happened.

Hit or miss on the Dead clothing merchandise. My Egypt shirt is in excellent shape from early 2000s, still my favourite. My Dave’s Picks waffle shirt, no problem. Other Dead shirts good. Garcia merchandise T-shirts all bright and fit great.
However, my Workingman’s shirt sizing was bizarre, I must have got Lou Ferrigno’s shirt in error, and the detailing was so faded when I got it, it’s like the Shroud of Turin was washed and left to dry in the bright Sun for weeks. The upside is that it will be an exceptional car buffer.

Okay, maybe you need some skill,,,, but you could sew them into a quilt.

Tattered quilt on the goose down bed
"Every stitch tells a story", my Grandma said
Her mama's nightgown, her Grandpa's pants
And the dress she wore to her high school dance
Now wrapped at night in those patchwork scenes
I waltz with Grandma in my dreams
My arms, my heart, my life entwined
With water from another time
