8 years in and the Grateful Dead are a little bit of everything to everyone. They are putting up textures and tones of rock, of jazz, of country, with set-morphing vibes and long stretches of improvisations that are completely keyed into the sum of their parts. Keith Godchaux is here with his cascading notes. Donna Jean too. Both finding their footing and keeping things steady in the wake of Pigpen's unfillable gap. The spring of 1973 feels transformative for the Dead - no more so than the May and early June shows, complementary yet remarkably different, soon-to-be cornerstones of everyone's tape collections, and now, 50 years later, set to be part of the band's official canon.

HERE COMES SUNSHINE 1973 is a limited-edition, 17CD boxed set with five previously unreleased, highly sought-after Dead shows, including: Iowa State Fairgrounds, Des Moines, IA (5/13/73), Campus Stadium, UCSB, Santa Barbara, CA (5/20/73), Kezar Stadium, San Francisco, CA (5/26/73), and Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium, Washington, D.C. (6/9/73) and (6/10/73).

During the spring, the band road-tested most of the songs they would record that summer for WAKE OF THE FLOOD – their first studio album in three years – including early live versions of “Mississippi Half-Step Toodeloo,” “Row Jimmy,” “Stella Blue,” “Eyes Of The World,” and, the set’s namesake, “Here Comes Sunshine.” Also tucked into the collection are songs destined for the Dead’s 1974 studio album, FROM THE MARS HOTEL – “China Doll,” “Loose Lucy,” and “Wave That Flag,” a precursor to “U.S. Blues.”

The new repertoire slipped neatly into the fluid setlists alongside songs honed on the 1972 European tour (“Jack Straw,” “Tennessee Jed,” “Brown-Eyed Women”), Chuck Berry perennials (“Promised Land,” “Around And Around”), classic country (“Big River,” “The Race Is On”), and incredible jam sequences: “He’s Gone”> “Truckin’”> “The Other One”> “Eyes Of The World.”

Due June 30th, the individually-numbered, limited-edition 17CD set features vibrant graphics and custom-designed folios by GRAMMY® Award-winning Art Director Masaki Koike, a custom-dyed Tenugui and an exclusive poster featuring an illustration by Mary Ann Mayer, and liner notes by Canadian author Ray Robertson, The Owsley Stanley Foundation, and David Lemieux. Good CD sleeve

Thoroughly enjoying this 73 box set. Two of my friends were at the Santa Barbara show, so that was my first listen.
I had one glue spot otherwise they all were good.

I’ll pass on a tip I got from these boards, a good CD sleeve called CD round bottom sleeve can be gotten at SoundSource. I’ve used these on all CDs with cardboard slip cases, Road trips etc.

Return to earth?

No need to - I have also moved on to 6/22/73 from the PNW box. And the high standard continues - great China/Rider and HCS of course. 3rd cd featuring the He's Gone-Truckin'-Other One-Wharf Rat jam tomorrow.
One curiosity - Jerry's guitar comes out of my right speaker, as I look at them, during the 73 box, and out of my left speaker during 6/22.

HC SUNSHINE

All my discs good so far.....small amount of glue on D3 of Kezar but no playback issues........working my way through chronologically.......06/09 is throwing me for a loop.......I LOVE IT !!!!!!.......especially the Loose Lucy......my all time fav........if 06/10 is better, I may not be able to return to Earth.

Another 6/10 listen...

...Except for the third set yesterday. My patience had waned by that point again. So, I went right to the next show on the USB drive: 6/22/73. Hearing those Bird Songs pretty much back to back (what's a couple hours?), and woah, Nellie, 6/22 is still top dog. By a long shot. Didn't get to HCS, yet, but I recall that as being one of the best versions as well. And that's another 3 setter, but one without a Dark Star or Other One, but just keeps going, and my attention has never flagged for that one. Not sure what's bugging me about 6/10. I love it right up through Dark Star, and the Stella is not great, but even the sweet He's Gone> Wharf Rat doesn't particularly enthrall me.

Completely stupid and irrational ranking of HCS shows:
5/13 the Des Moines dark horse show wins again as 7/1/78 won the July '78 Box for me and many; the HCS and Playing are 40 of the best minutes of the box (mistakes and all)

5/26 Kezar is a long time favorite, it sounds much better than it ever did, and that was an FM SBD

6/9 my only wish was they had played HCS at this as teased in Truckin of all places; oh, and LOOSE LUCY, great googily moogily; sidenote: loving They Love Each Other in this box, the more rollicking arrangement

6/10 a wonderful show, fantastic Dark Star, Playing, Bird Song, HCS is very good, an unusual He's Gone> Wharf Rat> Truckin sequence

5/20 the lengths they went to to get Jerry medical cocaine for a gargle to be able to sing that day is insane (check out the Good Ol Grateful Podcast on that), and that he sang for a 3 set show is nuts, but I didn't find this one to be incredible, just a good, solid '73 show, kinda like 5/5/77 in GStL, might as well include it

Cleaned all the CD’s again last night

Now have them stored in CD sleeves, never to be stored in those crappy cardboard glue dispensers again.
Now let’s see if they all play without error.
Going in show order.

One of the cardboard holders is actually coming apart because they apparently didn’t put the glue at the edges. I opened the holder and CD1 came partly out the edge. I think that it would have come out completely if it weren’t for the glue holding it between 2 sheets of cardboard.

Whew! Got 'em ripped!

Ripped the CDs and just finished a first listen with no runs, drips or errors. WOW! Holy shitoly! This box is a treasure from my ’72>hiatus sweet-spot (or is it ‘69>?). From a face-melting start in Iowa, the shows crescendo through RFK – hard to beat the energy, focus and recording of 6/10. I’ll leave more insightful musical commentary to the seasoned heads and accomplished players around here. (Deadshow: I didn’t hear any buzzing during Santa Barbara.)

Isopropyl alcohol did the trick for me (IMO micro-scratches are just about inevitable with this packaging). Not sure I’d throw Masaki Koike under the bus – he designed a cool box that was poorly executed. What we're getting seems like more of a pre-production prototype. By simply adding a third/middle layer of card-stock, die-cut to create a pocket for each CD, the first jolt to the box during shipping wouldn't drive the CDs between the two layers and into some kind of glue that still has not fully set. I’ll keep my CDs in separate sleeves. Later I’ll use a sacrificial CD to test whether the glue’s still tacky.

One Man Gathers What Another Man…

Thrills?? I know we all have an opinion, and it’s kinda fun sharing them so, 1st set Kezar:
Tennessee Jed-definitely in my top 3
Row Jimmy-could be my favorite all-time
Looks Like Rain-definitely Top 5
They Love Each Other-Top 2, maybe 1

Listening to this first set really made me stop everything and just LUSTEN. 2nd set:
Possibly my favorite HCS
Box Of Rain-let’s just say top 6
China/Rider-OMG, the jam in the middle is absolute beautiful mayhem!!
And even though it’s 3rd set, it’s on disc 2, a song I’ve just heard too many times, Me And My Uncle-I cannot think of one I like better.
3rd set:C’mon man, don’t even get me started.

I wondered if they weren't going to do RFK for the 50th, given how Dave alluded to the shows a few years back in a, "Yeah, we DO need to get those out, don't we . . . " kind of manner. Got the coffee mug, too, since I never have had a GD coffee mug.

Information on the digital files

So there is absolutely no information on the digital files beyond offereings in FLAC and ALAC. I assume that one or both are 24 bit, but would love some further information before deciding whether to buy them or the discs. HELP!

That the fourth disc for 10 June 73 with Dicky and Butch bodes well for ... something! A bunch of people had to agree on that, including lawyers, no doubt, so that it's happening I take as a good sign.

OMG!!! I think I just died…

OMG!!! I think I just died and went to Heaven. It's been a shitty year and a half for me. I've been to the hospital twice and was recently diagnosed with B-Cell Lymphoma. I have been through chemo and a Bone Marrow transplant and still receiving therapy and treatments but getting better each day at home. Listening to the Grateful Dead helped me through the trying times. I know I was a dollar short and a day late to miss the 6/10/1973 show but I did attend and enjoyed my "very first show" 6/9/1973 at RFK. I have been on the bus ever since. I would like to thank the Grateful Dead and the crew at GD Merchandise and especially for David L for finally putting these shows out. You have made my day!!

Beyond stoked by this announcement. 1973 just might be my favorite year in all of Deadom, so 17 discs from that period--including the legendary RFK shows, finally--almost sounds too good to be true. Somebody pinch me!

Agree with previous comments about the Allmans: there are a number of recordings out there in which GOGD/ABB members share the stage, but few if any have seen official release, presumably due to legal complications. If the lawyers got together and figured things out well enough to get the Dickey/Butch/GD set released, maybe there's more to come? A guy can dream.

Wow sitting at my desk and then…

I got a YouTube notification for Ramble On Rose and saw it was from 6/10/73…I was like huh? Stopped me in my thoughts, is this foreshadowing? It sounds great! Then another alert right after that for the Dave’s couch side chat about the box set! Started listening to Dave and stopped. Went and ordered it and the vinyl without thinking. And now thinking what a nice week it’s been. Great news for a Tuesday! Finished couch side chat and waiting for No. 46, with something beautiful on the horizon!

Can’t Order

I’ve tried two cards and PayPal and am being rejected every time. I have been texted by the banks and have confirmed that I made the attempted order but the cards are still rejected. PayPal just says there’s a problem and won’t open. I can’t talk directly to my bank customer service dept because it’s 20:17 here and the line doesn’t open for another 12 hours. This may wellbe the first cd boxset that I can’t get.

Edit. I moaned too soon! After several attempts I finally got PayPal to work so my order is in. Why is it so difficult to get these systems to be fool proof?

Trouble Ordering

I am having trouble ordering DP 46 and pre-ordering Here Comes Sunshine on the online store. Have tried multiple different devices and have had three different relatives/friends try unsuccessfully as well. Can anyone please help? Folks I'm honestly on the fence about this box set, not bc I have any doubts about the music (I practically wore out my Maxell XLIIs of Kezar back in the day) but I already have about 30 shows in my collection from '73. So it's good seeing the enthusiasm here, and tbf the only show besides 5/26 that I've heard from this bunch is 6/10. I look forward to hearing more, esp about Santa Barbara if anyone was there!

I don't know if anyone from dead.net reads these but this website will not let me order the new boxset. I have tried as a guest and it doesn't take my order. I have tried using safari, chrome, and edge on a pc, MacBook, and iPhone with no luck. I have also used 3 different credit cards and PayPal and dead.net still will not take my order.
