    Anchor Steam and Sam Cutler.. man. at 5:20, beer o'clock.. I will be sure to pour my first two sips to the curb. Like others, Anchor Steam was one of my favorites also. Thick and chewy satisfaction, especially around the holidays. As for Sam Cutler, a classic character and a rock and roll icon.

    I googled and it looks like Fritz Maytag is still alive at 85, which coincidentally is the year I am seeing a lot of love for further down in the thread. I can't believe it's gone and I have to believe someone will revive Anchor Steam.

    My JimInMD account doesn't seem to be logging in correctly so I had to resurrect MDJim. It's still me, I have no idea why it's flaking out on me.

    Weird.. but as they say, when the going gets weird... the walls spiral and melt away and you find yourself once again without clothes and purched on top of the telephone pole in the town park with a nasty case of sunburn.

    I really like 1985, warts and all and also caught one of these rare and elusive She Belongs to Me. A highlight for sure.

    Growing up on the East coast as a beer loving teen in the Seventies, beers like Anchor Steam, Olympia, and Coors (must be kept refrigerated) gained mythical status. Just not available. Had my first Anchor Steam in SF with my old man in 1976 down at the wharf, some crab legs, chowder, you know the drill. Those were the days.
    Saw only one show in '85: Manor Downs 8/31. It doesn't get much love on these threads, but boy I'll tell you, as a Texan, it was a gol dern good ol' time. I still remember Jerry's guitar sounding crystal clear like his rig had been super upgraded. Let it Grow, Terrapin, Estimated and ...She Belongs to Me!!!, were the highlights as we kicked up the dust like a bunch of stampeding cattle during that 100 degree late afternoon.

    Nice post on Anchor Crow. I misspoke, about first “craft beer”, ment modern area, of course there were hundreds of small local breweries BITD, same in Bu faf. I was referring to modern era, and yeah, back east Sierra Nevada Pale Ales were our go to “micro brew” before that really caught on back there. Hell St Pauli, Beck, and Heineken were exotic back then! Remember, a lot of things that are current in Cali sometimes take years to cross America lol.

    Anchor's Away?

    That really is some sad news. Anchor's Liberty Ale was always a favorite, as was their porter. They weren't technically the first craft beer company: they were actually the last surviving local brewery. Once upon a time there were hundreds of local companies, often providing a specifically local style preferred by local drinkers. But after WWII, the brewing industry consolidated in a massive way, so much so that at one point (the mid-70s, I think) there were less than a hundred brewing companies in the whole fucking country. (There's now something like 10,000.)

    Anchor somehow survived that era, partly because it was owned by a guy named Fritz Maytag, whose family made a fortune selling appliances, so he could keep the brewery going just because he liked the beer. Their signature product was Anchor Steam, and they were the only ones making "steam beer", a style specific to the Bay Area and which evidently had a loyal following. Steam beer was so named because brewers in the Bay Area would cool the hot wort in long shallow trays that produced lots of steam in cool bay air. This was cheaper than using various refrigeration methods used elsewhere, but it also took longer and exposed the raw beer to lots of microbes that contributed a distinctive funk to the flavor. As is often true of many things--music included--that small imperfection actually made it more perfect.

    So Anchor did not start the craft brewing movement, but Fritz Maytag was a mentor to Ken Grossman, who started Sierra Nevada, the company that arguably started it all. He gave him access to equipment and ingredients that he otherwise couldn't have gotten. At that time, brewing was so centralized/industrialized, that it was impossible to buy malt in a quantity small enough to make, say, 100 barrels of beer. You had to buy enough to make thousands of barrels, which Ken could never have done at that time. There's a hilarious story about how Ken once bought a pick up truck bed-sized load of malt from Fritz, not realizing it would be way too heavy for his suspension, and yet somehow manage to coax the pickup all the way back up to Chico via the back roads.

    Anyway ... I'll raise a glass to Fritz and to Anchor when happy hour comes today. And would you look at that? It's Beer O'clock already.

    I was as surprised as you all there was no announcement about 47. I'm thinking it almost has to be an '80s show, given that we've just had a couple '70s, a couple '90s, and gotten our '60s fix recently. Maybe they'll finally release one of the Berkeley Greeks we've been begging for? A guy can dream.

Tracking tells me that #46 has been delivered to my house. Unfortunately, I’m 200 miles away in Scotland having seen a Stejneger’s Scoter. We should get home tomorrow so I look forward to confirming the delivery. It is very unusual that delivery via Royal Mail is ever shown on the UPS tracker.

....my mom is still 83 years young. Mind sharp. Body not so much. Lost my dad in 2009. Two years into his retirement. Alzheimers. Gone within 18 months after being diagnosed. He did everything right. Never smoked. Never did drugs. Rarely drank, and if he did it was wine. Exercised all the time. Horrible, devastating disease.

Two high priced goalies fizzle out - a kid from Missouri comes in for his first playoff start, and rocks it! I kept telling my buddy this kid is the real deal.

I've been in an MRI tube before. Wasn't a big deal, but I could see how it would be if someone suffers from claustrophobia.
I have three phobias. Snakes. Spiders. And heights. Yet I want to skydive. Go figure. It's on my bucket list.

I’ve had probably 25 MRIs, and it’s like getting fitted for a coffin, a very LOUD coffin! Freaks some people out.

54 years (boy that sounds silly) ago I was at the Rose Palace in Pasadena to see Grateful Dead, Kaleidoscope (The late great David Lindley's band) & Southwind...the "headliner" was "The Farewell Cream Tour" film from the Royal Albert Hall...Kaeidoscope was a helluva band

DP46 has arrived in Scotland via Royal Mail and with no custom charges. Bonus CD playing as I type. Will save the main course for tomorrow. Spoiled for choice now as I'm still enjoying my RSD vinyl despite having the CD. Roll on the box set arriving early July.

Well, took a multi-day road trip to the backcountry of NE Utah/NW Colo and had a little time at the wheel. Plugged in DP 46, with bonus disc, which includes 5 tracks from my first show (9-19-72) and I'm just here to say I dug it big time. One exquisite PitB on the main show and smokin' bonus. Very happy.

Got back and see that MUatM will feature a Soldier Field show I attended in '91. I think I had the very last seat at the back of the 'house' that night and while the music was good, the players were the proverbial ants in the distance, so this little nugget should pay off handsomely.

Then in less than two months, the '73 box with the 6-9-73 show I attended. So, hitting many touch points this spring.

I'm happy with the GD archival output, though it probably only matters to me.

Interesting liner notes with Dave mentioning Pigpen and his performance on 8/6/71. This was also featured on the bonus disc from RT1.3. I know what I will be listening to next.

YOUR BORTH CORRECT: the vocals are definitely stereo, but hard pained left…
If you get close to the speaker that appears vocaless, you’ll hear them, though definitely diminished comparatively.
This is intentional by the recording artist. You can find more about these techniques and much more in the Bears own words, down the rabbit hole…(and only Bear can really explain his methodology properly).
Besides the vocal sound field, which I did find a bit left centric (but don’t think I would of considered it much if not mentioned before?) Otherwise, the sound and restoration are wonderful as per usual.

Every time the wife and I check out a new restaurant, if they have it on the menu, we order it. We judge them on it.
When we were dating back in 1997, she had never tried it. I convinced her to give them a shot.

I remember her eyes lighting up after the first bite.
The breading is key my friends.
She enjoys the rings. I prefer the tentacles. So it's a win/win.
Later on, she tried to turn me onto liver and onions. "Eww, no".

Sidebar - Of all shows mentioned and sports talked about, I'll throw this out.

Anyone else watch Full Custom Garage with Ian Roussel? This man is incredible to watch. Imagine watching Leonardo painting the Mono Lisa. Gets all done and decides the smile ain't right, so he just paints over it. Ian does this with metal. With almost no tools and not a lot of measuring, he'll just draw a line with a sharpie and start cutting.
An artist to his core. If you like car stuff, check him out.

Just saw the one where he makes a "Galloping Goose" train track riding truck out of junk from the railroad bone yard. Lots of great fabricators out there but Ian has style and imagination. I like what he has done with concept cars too. Now he doesn't want to restore cars anymore, he wants to make art that rolls. Genius stuff.

Bacon: haven’t had red meat since 1984, but I do like me some Morningstar fake bacon!

APPS: always dug a good hearty healthy crusty Bread, or especially beer bread with spinach and artichoke dip.
The Oasis in Boulder had a fav BITD, great pale ale too, but that place is long gone.
Glenwood Brewpub used to have a delicious cheddar cheese beer soup that came in an artisan bread bowl that was a fav. ISTSHOW, ever been, 15-20 years ago used to be a decent restaurant with great beer, but like most, got worse with new ownership. Usual mo: portions get smaller, favorite recipes either go away, or get wrecked, prices go up…progress…whatever….nothing last as the pranksters say!

46: playing the hell outta it ala the bad old daze when we didn’t have so much to choose from so would play whatever was new to death lol. Still haven’t made it to bonus…all good things, in….

Just a thought and certainly no offense to Vince or any other supporters of the following teams, but theoretically we’re looking at conference finals made up of not only no teams from Canadaland, but no teams from north of the mason dixion line? Florida, Carolina, Dallas, with Vegas being the northern most location….doesn’t seem right in some way???
Again, no offense ment, just seems weird having all teams from the more tropical regions lol.

seems like its taking a while for everyone to get their 46, listened through just once, about to get down with round two this weekend. Now, for apps and horseradish, though I do not have them often, a little bit of horseradish in your bloody mary mix is a nice way to spike it. Raifort sauce is a classic for horseradish, whether the base be bechamel, mayo or just fold it into whipped cream as topping for roast beast. Simple apps like caprese, (fresh mozz with cherry tomatoes and basil leaf), smoked salmon with chive cream cheese, smoked trout or mussels, honeydew melon wrapped with prosciutto. Little pastries like samoosas, empanaditas, stuffed filo pillows, or fritters like pakora, why not mini crab cakes, tapenade, clams casino. Then stuff like oysters on the half shell, escargot in garlic butter, charcuterie, not for everybody.

In honor of Canadaland's second consecutive night of sweeps later today, I will nominate Duck Confit Poutine. You can only take about two bites before your arteries seize up, but it's worth it.

South of the border has to be chicken wings. Hot and extra crispy. Although some will argue that it could be considered a main course if supplemented by enough beer.

My personal favorite, simply because it is shared with a group, is a charcuterie board. Love the combination of figs and a good blue cheese as well as some kornishons to balance out a nice slice of prosciutto. You can all stop laughing now.

Pretty sure I was there once, but was already wasted upon arrival and no hungry memories. We too like the Morningstar bacon. The only brand to nail it. Just had BLTs with it two nights ago. Of all the attempts at vegan meats that bacon is the closest to the real carne flavor. Nobody seems to have mastered vegan chicken yet. Beyond Meat burgers are the second best attempt and are great on the barbie, as are their brats. Dang, I'm getting hungry!

Finally got to the third disc of DaP 46 last night. Had a long drive, got myself into the appropriate mind set, and hit play, and that 35 minute TTO definitely hit the spot. Amazing to me, given how many versions I've listened to, that I'm still hearing new things in this jam. This one definitely goes to some interesting places. Kind of weird that the disc ends with El Paso, when the show actually ends with Casey Jones and Saturday, which of course are on disc 2 here. But if that's what it took to get this show onto three discs, I'm not going to complain.

Audio is excellent. Vocals do sound a little raw at times, as if the guys felt like they needed to shout to be heard in the monitors maybe, but the fi is indeed hi overall.

Dave's on a roll. Very stoked about everything since 39 and can't wait for the '73 box.

Mono Lisa? That'd be a good band name. Especially if you're kind of garage punk, with a female singer.

If you haven't heard of The Sphere yet, I suggest you check it out. I, for one, am very excited and curious.
U2 already scheduled to play a 25 date residency there.
Cost 2.3 billion to build. Yikes! Went wayyyy over budget but it sure looks cool and the immersive tech stats are very impressive.
With F1 coming here in November and the Super Bowl next year, Vegas is making plays Boi!

Geez Dennis, I’ve got Nat King Cole’s “Mona Lisa” roiling around my head! My father loved NKC, and actually bought a 5 record box set of his music circa late 60s (?), that he wore the grooves down on. Probably the only box set he ever owned!

VGuy - I’m really enjoying (Name Redacted), and just got a really clean copy of Hampton Comes Alive for a great price, so that’s bound to get some play this weekend. Great music. Good luck against the Oilers dynamic duo tonight. My PVR is set to tape my Leafs, and I’ll avoid the radio driving home, watch it all in the wee hours when I get back.

Water Cooler Fact - Some scholars believe Mona Lisa may have been, in fact, modelled on Leo Da V himself. Not sure if Leo liked to step out as a “lady”, or if he just felt he made a good model for the painting.

Jack/Oro/Mr Ones - The rides far from over boys. Hang tight!

I’ve played #46 once today, checking the discs are OK. Sounds good but I’ll give it a proper listen when I’m less tired. Just think we might never have had the 35 min TOO if only the band had listened to the man writing the second review on the cd and stuck to boogieing :))

I had smoked oysters at a small little restaurant in Monterey. Unbelievably good. I’ve never seen them on a menu anywhere else. So yeah, those are up there.

I realize this may sound odd, but the Mona Lisa is one of the most amazing and overrated pieces of art I’ve ever seen.

49 years ago today I was at the first wall of sound concert outside the bay area, at the University of Reno. Extremely windy day. The band had a hard time getting going, felt to me partially because the crowd was unresponsive. The band was probably worried about a speaker falling on them too. Truckin>Nobody's Fault>TOO was good, though.

There was a really good film of that name made about...30 years ago, I think. Starred Bob Hoskyns and Cathy Tyson.

I've never had an oyster. Didn't people used to joke about them being aphrodisiacs?
My brother had a prawn once and ended up in hospital.

Spectacular at good sushi restaurants.
I wouldn’t eat raw scallops from the grocery store.

Love sushi, generally don’t eat raw oysters.
Except one time I was in New Orleans in February and, according to the workers at Bourbon House (on Bourbon St a block or two from Canal), local oysters are best in February because of the cold water flowing out of the Mississippi River. Those oysters were really good. That place also has awesome crab cake. No breading, just lumps of crab pressed into a circular shape.

For bacon fans, if you haven’t had this before, wrap a water chestnut with a strip of bacon, push a tooth pick through it to hold it, and bake them in the oven. Consult the internets for full details.

Hola Oro, thanks, yes survived winter, it was mild until March, then we got slammed with lots of snow for a month. They are still skiing up at Killington, it was 80 degrees up there today, shorts and tshirts. Meanwhile, down here in the valley, the ticks are wicked bad because of the mild winter temps. Cold water oysters, yee hah, love em. We get a great selection at a local co-op mostly from Maine and Mass. A Nepalese restaurant not far away in Hanover, the momos are great there. Foodie, in another lifetime... chef, did the tour de France back in the early 80s. Spent a week in a class learning how to do whole pig, snout to tail, everything possible edible. We asked the teaching chef, what makes French cuisine taste so good, they said: la nourriture, literally what the food we eat ate. Michael Pollan wrote on this, PolyFace Farm, before How to Change Your Mind. Just discovering the first defective CD ever from dead.net, disc one of Dave's 46 skips on the second song, Sugaree. No visible flaws, have sent a note to Marye, not sure how this gets handled.
