Golden era Grateful Dead in the most golden city in the Golden State? Yes, DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 46 features the complete unreleased show from the Hollywood Palladium, Los Angeles, 9/9/72. Loosen that tie, this ain't a red carpet rodeo - it's the after party that legends are made of. Consistently excellent from start to finish, this West Coast groove showcases tracks that would soon debut on EUROPE '72, solo material from both Jerry and Bob, a riveting iteration of "China>Rider," a couple of Chuck Berry doozies, a bonkers 35-plus "Other One" that hits all the psychedelic highs, and wraps up with a "Casey Jones"/"Sugar Magnolia"/"One More Saturday Night" finale that'll have you wondering why you wore a tie in the first place. Hooray for Hollywood, indeed.
Limited to 25,000 numbered copies, this release was recorded by Owsley Stanley and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. Oh, and it ships next week so you'll wanna grab a copy while you can.

on the fly
that was a killer Ace served up by Mr. Block, one inch either way and it misses. Perfect
I missed an anniversary but 46 years ago I saw the Grateful Dead in concert at the Lakeland Civic Center. Released as part of Dick's 29, I don't really remember but sure sounds good today.
Gong, just the name sounds trippy. Tryin to type with a rather large bandage on my index finger. fun
Up and Down at 18
Almost as good as that ace, when Block got up and down from wicked steep and deep rough on the last hole, he guaranteed himself a spot in next years PGA Championship. Though there was no luxury car for making that ace, if he had parred instead, he would have finished two shots lower and in less money, that ace was worth about 200K just by itself. Eerie that Hovland made the same exact mistake as Conners on 16, one day later with the same result, elimination.
Mr Ones’ Purple Haze
Apparently. “Purple” was released only in Japan, so it’s great you have a copy. Weather Report was a very special band, really brought fusion up a notch and more accessible for casual jazz fans, and the alumni from WR is always worth checking out.
I agree on the “Last 5”, I always find it interesting to see what folks in the community are listening to. These are some Serious music fans here, with a wide range of taste, and you are right, the recommendations are incredible.

Anniversary show 5/22/82. Greek Theatre
41 years ago today I was up at the Greek Theatre for another fun day with the Grateful Dead. Fun show, its got a Cumberland Blues and a good one, I've never heard a bad one. Hopefully, we will get a Greek Box set one day. Damn fun times they were!
The great Greek mystery
Why no releases?
Either they arent in the vault, are unusable, or are being kept for a box. Ooor, maybe the PTB just like to see us squirm.
"Watch you squirm"
- Plasmatics
I picked the Hurricanes to win in 7....
....and that is why I don't bet anymore.
There is this restaurant a few miles away called the Great Greek.
Top notch gyros. Extra tzatziki please and thank you.
Mas Miroslav...
An album by Miroslav that's great is "Infinite Search" recorded in 1970...it was later re-released on Atlantic under the name "Mountain In The Clouds"...simply amazing... Joe Henderson, Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin, Jack DeJonette & Joe Chambers...whew...This was a year before Weather report's first LP...
I don't know what Benn was thinking....
....but I ain't complaining.
Dallas losing composure in a must win game....
....suck it assholes.
Didn't even play the last 20 seconds of the period, for fear of bullshit.
Dallas Stars fans . . .
. . . are like summer vacation.
No class.
Your boy Benn
is the one who crosschecked a defenseless player in the face less than two minutes into the game and got ejected. Then that clown Domi, whose father was one of the dirtiest players of all time, pulls a similar stunt in the second period.
So let’s throw garbage on the ice and leave.
Nice.
Greek Mystery Solved...

Anniversary show 5/23/82 Greek Theatre
41 years ago it was Sunday at the Greek with the Good old Grateful Dead. Great show, Shakedown, Stella Blue, Casey Jones, Broke down Palace. I'm sure allot of other people who post here were also there.
a short take
Not to piss off any non hockey person or people who say this is for talking about the dead.
But,,,, I looked up cross checking (no idea what it was,,,,, not a hockey person).
I watched the video online. This didn't seem that bad. I thought that would be considered normal hockey.
True?
One more point - I always hope texas teams will lose because this state is so full of itself. A legend in their own mind. Or as they like to say,,,, greatest nation in the union. So yeah, lose.
Ah, get born, keep warm
Happy birthday #82 Bob Dylan.
Look out, kid, they keep it all hid
Better jump down a manhole, light yourself a candle
PS - Dennis: The crosscheck was vicious, something they are trying to remove from the game. No need for that stuff.
Goon City
That CC was lame. It might not look so bad from behind angle, but from front you can see he keeps the pressure on and almost bounces…he could of crushed the windpipe or neck, phuching goon!
The announcers were like “well depending on if he ment it, or if he intended to hit on the shoulders…”
BS, that goon was going for throat! I think the refs got this one right with the time fitting the crime, though some got six months, some got one solid, but me and my buddy, got life time yeah…
Funny, relatively new Dave’s and besides us rule breaking nuts crickets…?
crickets rescue unit
I would happily talk more about DaP46 to help dispel the crickets. Except... I still don't have my copy yet, as it was lost during shipping. Six days ago I did finally get through to someone at Warner who said a replacement was "being processed" but since then I've only had my own private chorus of crickets. I hope it's quietly on its way to me at last.
Ah well, I listened yesterday to 5/23/92, since I was there that night. And during Women are Smarter, I could hear Weir testing his mic setup (happens a couple of times, at one point he says "testing") and this reminded me of what Phil wrote in his book about how Dan Healy was eventually let go for messing with Bob's levels. I wonder if this was evidence of that.
crickets rescue unit
Obeah would it be possible to tell me how you contacted Warner?
I too have yet to receive DP46. My countless messages to dead.net have gone unanswered.
Thanks for any help!
Jim
Lack of Dave's 46 input....
....I listened to the bonus disc again last night during the 3rd period.
Yup. It's still good.
Contacting warner
Hey Jimrell sorry to hear you're also having issues. So after waiting patiently for two weeks, I drove down to the post office, where a clerk checked the tracking info and told me that my package was still with UPS. Later that afternoon, after dealing with the unhelpful UPS chat bot, I finally reached a live person, who told me that my package had been lost, but that because of the terms of service I couldn't open a case with UPS; I had to reach out to the shipper.
At that point I opened a ticket with dead.net, and then I also reached out to Marye here on the forums (because I saw so many people saying "DM Marye, she can help"). Mary was super kind, and I really don't know what she may have done behind the scenes. I waited another week. During that time I got an automated reply to my ticket, but nothing else happened. On the 18th I tried again (by replying to the ticket email, and being polite but expressing disappointment) and then to my surprise just a few minutes later I received a response from someone named "Sherry" at Warner. Sherry apologized for the hassle and told me a replacement shipment "was being processed."
The email also read, "You will receive a confirmation email when your replacement order ships. You have not been charged for this shipment." But that was six days ago, and I still don't have a confirmation email, so who knows at this point. Good luck! I hope things work out for the both of us!
Slow Progress
Finally got the second half of the bonus disc done yesterday.
If I had to guess based only on these few songs I would say Denver was the better show but of course taken out of the whole show context it is a guess. Thursday I should get the first listen to Hollywood. Been waiting for an empty house so I can crank it up as it should be heard. I'm trying not to piecemeal the first listen this time to get a better feel for it. It's just not the same.
Cheers

DaP 46 is wherever
For me, every delivery from Warners/Rhino/Dead takes longer than before, and because I’m in Canada, delivery charges have gone up enormously to $16 per item, yet items are still shipped the cheapest/slowest way possible. I really dickered on buying this DaP 46, given all the previous delivery issues, but given I still don’t have it, I’m absolutely certain it is the last thing I’m buying off this site. I can say with a clear conscience it is particular to this site, too, because I order world wide, never even close to as slow as this site. If you charge fucking $16 shipping, at least use it for shipping. I have deadnet shipping fatigue.
R.I.P. Tina Turner
God that was a shock, reading that. Such a great performer and so many amazing records. I still enjoy watching videos of her from the 60's and 70's on youtube.
Dave's 46 is one of the best Picks, to my ears. I enjoyed all of it, but the third cd is obviously where it all kicks off. I've enjoyed Truckin-The Other One's from 1972 more than any other Dead music this year, I would say. And as I have just started on the Lyceum shows from May, I am heading towards what may be the ultimate version on 26th.
Last 5
Box Set cd1 - 1966 recordings - Buffalo Springfield
Pushin' Too Hard - The Seeds
L - Steve Hillage
Rubbles Volume 14 - The Magic Rocking Horse - Various
Revolver - this new 2022 stereo mix - The Beatles
Special mention also for the 1928 blues recordings by Ramblin' Thomas "Hard Dallas." In the sleeve notes, it states -
"He presents himself as a lazy, unreliable, drunken backbiter always on the lookout for a meal ticket woman." Quite impressive, really.
Gonna miss the Panthers sweeping the Canes....
....got a date with a Mr. Billy Strings.
Dave's Picks Fun Fact
There have been 4 1972 shows released in the Dave's Picks series thus far: 11 11/17/72, 14 3/26/72, 24 8/25/72, and now 46 9/19/72. For each of them, the major jam is a massive Other One, with 14's Bonus Disc including another Other One. And, how have there only been 4 1972 Picks?!?
Re: That Mike
I hear you man.. and that goes to our good friends across the pond and elsewhere around the globe. I have to wonder if some of the struggles with international postage and fees has a tiny bit to do with the tariff wars, increase in nationalism, and general pissing contests between nations that were staged a few years back (and still continue). Not pointing fingers but my heart sank when all this occurred, it troubles me.
If it ain't broke don't fix it.
John Nash (beautiful mind movie) was awarded the nobel prize in 1994 for his work in Game Theory in part by modeling (I think proving) how these tariffs and taxes between economic competitors hurt everyone and help no one, but it seems no one listens and everybody loses. I realize we started this.. so blame us I guess. A self inflicted wound and plain stupid. Everyone loses.
That's all I have.. Still haven't listened to 46 yet.. working on it. As you were.
Grumpy ol' Phuq sez...
Hockey would be more fun to watch IF THERE WERE MORE SCORING!!!
As soon as I grouched that the Canes tied the game
I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Shipping Blues Again Mama!
Jim - I don’t believe it is tariff issues, mainly because our countries maintain NAFTA 2, and other items arrive from the US and Europe in reasonable time, but thank you for the support. I wouldn’t even mention it, but some others had mentioned they hadn’t received theirs, either, and the futility of trying to reach customer service here is legendary. The shipping fee on the box sets is now $70, high for sure, but if it meant delivery in even a week, great. But judging from previous ones I’ve ordered, it’s 5-6 weeks+, with no tracking, and you paid your money months earlier, and good luck to you. No thanks. Like I said, Dead shipping fatigue.
It is what it is.
Many thanks for your reply…
Many thanks for your reply Obeah, hopefully DP46 will show up in our mailboxes soon!
Jim
1972 Picks, 46 fixes
Alvarhanso: would guess the quick easy answer why would be the Europe 72 tour with the Academy of Music run up. That massive amount, along with a few Dicks Picks (4?), Sunshine Daydream, Hofheinz, River box and download, there's a bunch more 1972 shows released. However can only agree, there's more good stuff from fall 72 to come. Meanwhile, empathetic with those still waiting on their 46, did get mine early May but did not play through soon enough to discover disc one was defective and skips. Notified, now have been waiting a couple weeks, it does seem to take WMG quite a while, but eventually all should be made whole.
Billy Strings just plain shreds....
....yesterday was Bob Dylan's 82nd birthday, so of course Billy had to acknowledge it. Played Don't Think Twice It's Alright, Drifter's Escape and debuted Motorpsycho Nitemare.
Wow, wow, wow.....wow.
Finally, 1st Listen
Wow! The sound is absolutely stupendous. Bear was a genius.
Only through disc one but the setlist flows beautifully.
Vocals are where they should be. No idea what that post was about.
There is real screamer in the audience, lol.
Will report back later with disc 2, 3 reviews.
Cheers all
Cool 1st set closers, Playin' at the perfect length to catch all the good stuff, Loser, J. Be Goode.
2nd set played in corrected order. Too bad it didn't fit to break it in Drums. What a tasty, rowdy, Truckin' > Drums > T.O.O. It's got it all. Jazzy, mind reading, and goes everywhere and back with room for some feedback space that isn't even annoying, lol. Keith laying down sweet riffs, this jam is so good it should have a name. The whole show has a great building pace. I like everything about this show, and I don't often say that. But I'm learning to do that more. Cheers
strange...
..that all 4 Daves from 1972 have featured The Other One as it's major jam, rather than Dark Star. All the more reason to dig out Dicks Picks 11 - 9/27/72, and 36 - 9/21/72 to play alongside them to give a fuller picture. That last one also features bonus tracks from 9/3/72 - He's Gone-The Other One-Wharf Rat. That's what you call value for money.
The Hansen Brothers Live...
I caught a bit of of Slap Shot last night...Kills me every time...
May 25, 1974
I was at the UC Santa Barbara Campus Stadium for a Wall Of Sound Show...Maria Muldaur was the opener...it also served as a bachelor party for my buddy John....Next week he and the Mrs will celebrate their 49th Anniversary...yeow...here's the thing though...as we were in line to get in we found a vendor of the most delicious windowpane...he pulled out a small tin of child size band aids...he tore off four band aids from the strip and we opened them and a hit was stuck between the pull off paper and the sticky end of the ban aid...WTF!!!...greatest packaging job I've ever seen...we took our hits and I put my band aid on my hat as did two other of my friends BUT...John put his on his forehead....after a day of frolicking in the sun I looked at John and he was sunburnt to a tee and he still had the band aid on...I reached over and pulled it off and it looked like a light of beam shooting out of his forehead, by the wedding the following week he looked like a partially peeled tomato with a white slot on his forehead, La Señora was not amused....some fun...sadly though as time marches on we lost our two buds that went with us, Dogweed Al and Mousey...another thing about this show was that I took a folding beach chair with me and I used it to lay back and have the music just wash over me...fast forward to the '82 Greek shows Billy was talking about...at the Friday night show I was one of the first in and grabbed the place I wanted...first row off the floor dead center...as people were filing in I saw this one guy looking at me...he walked over and asked me "Were you at UCSB in '74?" I did a double take and started laffing and said yes I was...he told me he saw me laid back on that beach lounger and thought "Man...he looks comfortable!!!" He shook my hand and walked off...ya never know, ya know?
Good Ole Nappy…
Always has the best tales!
Keep ‘em coming Bra.
Kights that say neet didn’t have their neet working last night.
Seemed a little flat, or was it Dallas was sporting the scared corned animal fighting for their life routine?
Prolly both, hopefully the Kiniggits finish em off at home for da fans mañana…
Damn FLA is looking tough, if it’s them and Vegas it should be an awesome series!
Ok, hup hup down to the mine, quicker it opens, sooner it closes. Sooner we get there, the sooner we get out and drink cold frosty beverages, listen to Dead, and open the patio for the season, woo hoo (think we might be done with snow this year?)🤞 oh, those woo woo woo woo birds are starting to show up. Maybe this year we’re gonna id em ; )
Happy fry yea all!
Oro
Try googling Mourning Dove for that 4 woo call.
Sad (hence mourning) 4 woo call with the first one going up, then down. And a slight pause between woo 2 and 3. Very common but I would have to check some lists on ebird to see if they are common in the Eagle valley. That ebird site is run by Cornell labs if we need a Dead connection to this post, lol.
Cheers
Cornell, for the birds
Couldn't resist chirping in. Cornell has a free app for bird ID, called Merlin. It's excellent. One of the great features is Sound ID, simple, great concept. Install the free app on your phone, get close to the bird sound, press record. You will see a rolling audio graph and birds will be identified by their sounds. It can pick out birds from hundreds of yards away, individuals, multiple bird songs. ID tag appears with tiny photos, which lights up repeatedly every time it detects that bird. When you stop recording, you have a record, time and place stamped, which birds were recorded. Especially good for birds which are reclusive, ovenbirds, etc. Also to ID birds which can sound and look alike, such as the warblers. There are full screen photos available for straight visual ID as well. And yep, that sure sounds like Mourning Doves.
A pun walks into a room and kills 10 people....
