    Jerry Garcia: 80 For 80

    Jerry 80

“Each situation is different and my approach to it is to try and have as many kinds of music available to us as musicians...to be able to play the right thing in any given situation.”

We've got just the right 80 minutes of primo Jerry to celebrate what would have been his 80th circle around the sun.

I was at the Hampton Beach Casino BAllroom for Ratdog and Bob Weir said, "Jerry would want us to play." It was a phenomenal show and the encore was 'Knocking on Heaven's Door' which lasted a long time and faded into the parking lot where many, many deadheads gathered to pay respect and be together.

We saw Jerry perform with the Jerry Garcia Band at the Ventura Fairgrounds on his birthday either 2 or 3 days before he died. I remember reading 2 days later in the morning paper that he has checked into a rehab the day before, but I no longer remember how long he survived there. The Dead were banned from the fairgrounds because of the antics of the Deadheads and so the Jerry Garcia Band traditionally played that venue on Jerry’s birthday.

Yes one year earlier
I was annouced drug free in a in patient facility
Of which i was a resident for 27 months
On August 9,1995 my sister called me with the news that Jerry passed .
I must admit at that time
It had no real meaning
At that time I had more things going on to get my own life together
28 years later I’m still clean and sober
As far as Jerry …….well some of us get it and others just…….shall we say just don’t.
A shame…..thats the way it is .
Through the years I’ve seen various offshoots of the Grateful Dead
One wonders what would have happened if ????
Or how many more piano players would have they gone through ( just a joke)
Anyway in the scheme of things August 9,1994 was and still is one of the more important days if my existence
August 9,1995 was just another day

There's a reason that the vast majority of photographs of Garcia, who would have turned 80 on Aug. 1, depict him with his hands on a guitar: Playing music was his life.

I just ran across this at RR Auction May 21,2023. They have a signed letter from Jerry Garcia dating back to 1982 to a model Jerry was looking to date. It includes a hand drawn picture of the Greek Theater in Berkeley. It's pretty rare to see something like this up for auction.

If you could hug Anyone ... dead or alive ... Who would it be?
Now, Look at this picture of Jerry for a few seconds, and then answer again.
Does your answer change?

Mine did not. The answer was Jerry both times.

P.S. Not sure who took the picture, but Thank You!
