Golden era Grateful Dead in the most golden city in the Golden State? Yes, DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 46 features the complete unreleased show from the Hollywood Palladium, Los Angeles, 9/9/72. Loosen that tie, this ain't a red carpet rodeo - it's the after party that legends are made of. Consistently excellent from start to finish, this West Coast groove showcases tracks that would soon debut on EUROPE '72, solo material from both Jerry and Bob, a riveting iteration of "China>Rider," a couple of Chuck Berry doozies, a bonkers 35-plus "Other One" that hits all the psychedelic highs, and wraps up with a "Casey Jones"/"Sugar Magnolia"/"One More Saturday Night" finale that'll have you wondering why you wore a tie in the first place. Hooray for Hollywood, indeed.

Limited to 25,000 numbered copies, this release was recorded by Owsley Stanley and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. Oh, and it ships next week so you'll wanna grab a copy while you can.

    oysters etc, defective disc one

Hola Oro, thanks, yes survived winter, it was mild until March, then we got slammed with lots of snow for a month. They are still skiing up at Killington, it was 80 degrees up there today, shorts and tshirts. Meanwhile, down here in the valley, the ticks are wicked bad because of the mild winter temps. Cold water oysters, yee hah, love em. We get a great selection at a local co-op mostly from Maine and Mass. A Nepalese restaurant not far away in Hanover, the momos are great there. Foodie, in another lifetime... chef, did the tour de France back in the early 80s. Spent a week in a class learning how to do whole pig, snout to tail, everything possible edible. We asked the teaching chef, what makes French cuisine taste so good, they said: la nourriture, literally what the food we eat ate. Michael Pollan wrote on this, PolyFace Farm, before How to Change Your Mind. Just discovering the first defective CD ever from dead.net, disc one of Dave's 46 skips on the second song, Sugaree. No visible flaws, have sent a note to Marye, not sure how this gets handled.

Speaking of, hola DMCVT, nice to see you survive another NE winter!
Samosas, loved em at this Indian place we had back home BITD. Of course didn’t last too long in our boring white mono cultural suburban wasteland!

WINGS, not just for breakfast anymore. Mammosers, BEST EVER, ANYWHERE, ANY PLACE!!! I’ll bet ya!
Anchor bar, meh, come in a lake of grease, real wings shouldn’t be greasy! Duffs, ok, but too greasy, Mammy’s is da shit!
Used to do deep fried shrooms and dip em in there chicken wing sauce, ffs I’m salivating like the neighbors dog! Woof!
We get the sauce shipped out since I went to school and partied in HS with the owner.

ISTSHOW, Boca Burgers are great, the all American flame grilled! Of course shitty market is going to discontinue : (
Yer right about fake chicken. Luckily still do dirty bird, only meat we do. Would/should do fish, but for whatever reason, don’t like stuff outta the water? I know, weirdos…
New summer fav: chicken breast on the grill with Mammy’s sauce, lettuce and blue cheese on a proper roll…with ice cold brew of course! Man you guys are making me hungry lol.

Yeah Crow that TOO is kinda different, definetly will need more “proper” research.

SPHERE: yeah check that beast out! I checked out some of the tech specs last year…SICK!

Hey Mikey! Good luck tonight, and I mean you, not the name we shall not mention so as not to induce any weird juju or jinxes, shhhhhhhhhhhh🤫

Colin, thanks for reminding about the review. Yeah too funny. A little yin yang lol

NITECAT: sweet, look forward to some summer binging! Thanks Bra!

CONEKID: heeeeyyyy, isn’t that Garcias Water chestnut app recipe? (see NYE 87 video at intermission, hilarious)

Okey dokey sports fans, it’s fri yea!
Be good and have a great WE!

    Spectacular at good sushi restaurants.
I wouldn’t eat raw scallops from the grocery store.

Love sushi, generally don’t eat raw oysters.
Except one time I was in New Orleans in February and, according to the workers at Bourbon House (on Bourbon St a block or two from Canal), local oysters are best in February because of the cold water flowing out of the Mississippi River. Those oysters were really good. That place also has awesome crab cake. No breading, just lumps of crab pressed into a circular shape.

For bacon fans, if you haven’t had this before, wrap a water chestnut with a strip of bacon, push a tooth pick through it to hold it, and bake them in the oven. Consult the internets for full details.

    DeadVikes,
I was in a beer store today and they had 19.2 oz single cans of Oberon. Never seen those before.

There was a really good film of that name made about...30 years ago, I think. Starred Bob Hoskyns and Cathy Tyson.

I've never had an oyster. Didn't people used to joke about them being aphrodisiacs?

49 years ago today I was at the first wall of sound concert outside the bay area, at the University of Reno. Extremely windy day. The band had a hard time getting going, felt to me partially because the crowd was unresponsive. The band was probably worried about a speaker falling on them too. Truckin>Nobody's Fault>TOO was good, though.

I had smoked oysters at a small little restaurant in Monterey. Unbelievably good. I’ve never seen them on a menu anywhere else. So yeah, those are up there.

I realize this may sound odd, but the Mona Lisa is one of the most amazing and overrated pieces of art I’ve ever seen.

Last Five material.

Vguy -You dreamed it - no '73 SLC Dark Star. And, if its the Dark Star on DiP28 you're thinking of, that is from Lincoln, NE. Like Drpryan said, the Dark Star - the full show - from 4/12/69 at the Student Union Ballroom, U of U is a real good un.

Dead performed the song Salt Lake City once, 2/21/95. Strider was there. Show released in the 30 Trips box. Beautiful Foolish Heart and first Visions of Johanna since the pair in '86.

Check it out. Great show.

Synchronicity:

"The Race Is On" played while I crawled through traffic in Portland OR. The thing is, I was right by Portland Meadows, a horse racing track.

That was cool.

Anything between 1994 and 1999 gets my blood pumping.
If you want a good laugh, watch Phish shreds IT on you toob.

You mentioned a couple of weeks back that you had watched Phish's Live in Brooklyn DVD. Wanted to post that is a huge part of my yearly rotation. Listen to it 2-3/year. Just an awesome performance, just one of many I had a chance to see but was too busy at work to go. The last time I was in the Hampton Coliseum was for the recording of Hampton Comes Alive. Think, from memory, it was Cincy, Murfreesboro, and Hampton. A fun little jaunt. All three were wild. Saw Phish first time in November of 1995. A Live One also a great recording. Hard to believe but 2023 marks their 40th anniversary as a band. Happy anniversary Phish!!! Love you guys, get a couple of shows in next few weeks, and then maybe Nashville. Fall dates announced.

Dead Head Profiles

I've been enjoying these, Scott. Thanks so much for going through the trouble to clean these up and get them out there.

Evokes some great memories.. in the days before internet (at least as we know it now), social media and cell phones.. when Duprees Diamond News was how a lot of us figured out what was going on during the shows we could not attend, this looks like it was put together about this time. I have never seen any of it before.

Thanks again.

Glad to hear you are enjoying it. When I was producing and directing the show, I tried to make a show I would like to watch, an intelligent comment on the scene, show highlights, tour highlights, what a venue that I could not attend was like. I'd be interested in interviews with people involved in the Dead sphere, and with deadheads themselves, because they seemed to be interesting people. That's why we did "Deadhead Profiles". I felt like the straight media at the time was missing how cool the scene and the deadheads were, and as a professional journalist I could tell the story better, at least from a informed deadhead's perspective. What was amazing is it took off like a rocket, and we soon had all sorts of deadhead friends contributing to the show.
