We can't help it, really - for we, like you, are Grateful Dead fans above all else. Just like you, we've spent countless hours debating the merits of show over show, year over year. Jerry bled music....

....so I think, if still alive, he would still be playing. With the Dead? Hmmmm. Maybe small, spotty tours, kinda like what Phish is doing now. After Trey's heroin binge, they did it smart. Although I would tend to believe it would be more JGB type shows. Jerry & Friends. I also believe, a lot of his attention would also be into artwork. He was pretty good at that too....

I think the 95 tour would have been the last, at least for quite awhile. The faux-hippie entitlement crowd that wasn't there for the music (or even the concert unless they were "miracled") had grown so large and unruly that 95 seemed a tipping point. I think Jerry would have gone to Marin, painted, designed neckties, and become famous for unannounced guest appearances at various Bay area clubs. And perhaps write his autobiography. The point is I don't see how the Dead could have continued being a major touring rock band after 95. Something had to give. Unfortunately it did, in the worst way.

Yes indeed, Crimson is a stellar jam band in their own right, they've gone through changes in personnel similar to the Dead, from Greg Lake to Wetton to Belew to the double trio and now with Jako....each chapter different but it makes an interesting read, aka listen. I was privileged to see the Discipline era band live as well as the double trio.....fascinating shows, love how Fripp sat on a stool stage right, off stage....did not like the limelight but certainly could shred, it's funny because if my memory serves, when Gabriel did his first solo tour, Mr. Fripp was his guitarist and when I saw that performance, Fripp was also off stage on a stool. I am looking forward to their North American tour this summer, they have a date at the Rochester Jazz Festival....can't wait to see them recreate the magic.

I agree on Fripp & the model in which he releases all those wonderful KC offerings. I have never downloaded but have picked up many of the 1971-1974 individual shows & a few of the boxed sets. Just like the GD they play each song a different way every time. Loads of fierce improvisation. The Starless box set is my second favorite box set after E72. You can go back to those releases over and over again.

Interesting that this subject came up. I bought the Download Series from dead.net in 2008, all FLAC except Volume 8 which I bought both FLAC & mp3. At that time the back inlay card with track listing was not being offered anymore, just the front cover artwork for jewel cases, and I created my own back covers. The front cover art work wasn't all that great, as in a more refined image - it was too pixelated for my tastes, so I didn't grab those front covers. Later on, the iTunes store began to offer the Download Series but with somewhat different covers and I didn't go for that.I going to put this series in jewel cases. Jump to 2017 and I found Album Art Exchange, a neat site that offers a whole lot of album covers from many different artists, Grateful Dead included. On their site they only offer the original artwork for Download Series Volumes 1 thru 5, nothing beyond that, yet. www.albumartexchange.com/covers?q=grateful+Dead+Download+Series&fltr=AL… Anyways, I'm looking for high quality original artwork for the Download Series Volumes 6 thru 12, plus that Family Dog show that was issued during the original offering period. I know that Volumes 11 & 12 covers are different than Volumes 1 thru 10. Can somebody point me in the right direction?

Thanks for that tip KG - a GD TV show?!? Seriously. What has our world come to??? This day and age is ripe with offerings. Haven't read the book, but I'll take your word for it that there will be entertaining lizards perhaps. Sixtus P.S. 4/14/72 KeithFan, you've hit the nail on the head squarely. This is probably my fav DS from the tour. I should re-issue my E'72 Dark Star write-ups soon....it was one of the first things I ever put up here. Happy to share if any are interested.

Holy Tivoli Batman, that's a Grate Dark Star!

Morning Rockers! It's a dose of Dark Star for my breakfast. Apply liberally. I have forgotten how awesome 4/14/72 is. I may like this DS more than 4/8. I've been taking a different approach to Europe '72 this Spring; instead of listening to each show in order on its anniversary date, I'm listening to eacheck show 3-4 times before moving on to the next. What a way to fly.... One more month. I'm really stoked about DaP 22.

credit where credit is due...

the thing that impresses me most, it the sound quality of the shows are rated fairly accurately, so you know what you are getting. Re. Zappa, the zappateers website has a whole lot of Frank...keeps me busy for sure.

i've seen two of your posts in one weekcomplaining about someone's negative comments-guess what, when someone has an opinion that is not aligned with your thoughts,even if it's about someone setting a price for something they selling or the band is slop before pigpen.its gonna be negative.it's their prerogative to say it's not worth it or no thanks.i think it's your emotional immaturity to anything negative or something you don't agree with.you could have left it to-"that's your opinion and i don't agree."instead you feel it's necessary to put someone down.earth without rain is a desert.

Pauses between tracks?

Hi all, A technical issue I'm hoping to resolve: Recently ordered this set, promptly downloaded the CDs to my iTunes collection. Getting 1-2 second pauses between most of the tracks which disturbs the flow of the music. Does anyone know what might be causing this, and how to fix it? Gareth

It’s most likely caused by a setting in iTunes. Go into the iTunes preferences and see what is listed for import settings, as well as for playback settings.If you still can’t fix it then google it, there should be instructions somewhere.

Newly Grateful Recommendations

You know, Gareth, it really comes down to what you like about the Dead... When I put in the Dead, I rarely want to listen to songs, so to speak. I tend to go for the long, inspired jams. For this, I would suggest the Winterland 1973 boxed set as No. 1, so far... though in general, shows from the 1973-1974 will be your best bet for this... That said, there are gems of shows throughout the years, though I've never personally been impressed by anything later than 1977. May 1977: Get Shown the Light (All Music Edition) is a great collection from this year. I also really love One from the Vault, Sunshine Daydream, & Dick's Picks, Vol. 14... The Grateful Dead Movie Soundtrack is an all-too-looked-over gem, too. Finally, if you can afford it, I'd recommend getting a copy of the Pacific NW '73-'74 boxed set while it's still available on this site. When these sell out on dead.net, they price-inflate like crazy to 2x their original cost or more.

Get Shown the Light, the box with the book, was limited to 15,000 copies, I read somewhere.But I can’t find anything on the All Music Edition that’s still available. Can somebody tell me how many of those were printed?

Best digital format?

So, I'm totally showing my newbie-ness, but when the formats are digital, which is the best to download? I'm thinking about uploading to iphone for maximum bluetoothing. Also, is the first selection a CD collection of the four shows? I didn't see it listed behind the All Music Edition, so I figured it must be sold out.

16/44.1 is CD format, so you could convert to WAV or AIFF on a computer and burn CDs if you wanted to, as well as have the digital file on a music player.

The higher resolution files are for a computer or music player. If you wanted to burn CDs from those files you would lose the higher resolution that you paid more for.

I downloaded the ALAC of this digital download but when I import into iTunes it is not recognizing the artist or songs and not creating an album. For the same ALAC download for Pacific Northwest ’73-’74: The Complete Recordings Boxed Set it worked perfectly in iTunes. Why does this download now import correctly? Thanks if anyone knows or can help.

May 1977: Get Shown The Light (All Music Edition)

Since they sold out of the regular box set with all the bells and whistles, and had a huge demand, Dead.Net is selling an All Music Edition that "...only includes the 11 CDs in four folios and a booklet of liners, housed in a simple slipcase."

So, still the four shows, just without the special packaging and the unpublished book. This time, the order went through. Nothing on the website about this also being a limited release -- it's not numbered, but they don't specify if it's another set amount.

Excellent news ! I wonder if they will re-release other box sets in this format that originally sold out. Fillmore West 1969 is the one I sadly missed out on and would shell out for in a heartbeat.

Does somebody have problems with tracking number?

I've purchased the fantastic Lyceum LPs more than a month ago and still nothing arrived.
I've searched for the tracking number done by the GD store on the DHL site but nothing appears.
I've yet written to the customer helpdesk, but I'm curious if somebody encountered my same problem.

Just to state the obvious, they are indeed fantastic records. I am half way through 5/25/72 at the moment - one that no-one really mentions. Probably because of the night after, which is a shame as it's a great show in it's own right. Curious "Good Lovin" - 14min 53 seconds, and no Pigpen rap - he just sings the opening the verses and the closing ones some 12 minutes later. In between we have spot on r'n'b jamming like no-one else.
