Scarlet>Truckin' I thought. Maybe somebody beat me to that correction but I'm just scanning the posts and saw Jim's analysis. I'll check out Crisler and 10/20 Scar>fire because I want to hear it. :-) Have a Grateful Day all! Thanks essential workers...Today's Thursday which means tomorrow is Friday by the way... :-)

Yasss, finally inchin my way through this groovy 73 horn tour. Can’t believe I’ve never gone there, especially since fall/winter 73 has always been one of my top tours. Really dig those last ten of the year with just the true five piece.
Speaking of, I believe proudfoot was just waving the 12/18/73 banner on the other board. Can’t wait till we get that one!

So did 9/15/73 yesterday and it definitely seemed better than the previous show. Perhaps a bit more upbeat from the get go. Aud of the first set not great, but by the historical standards not bad, listenable. Second set SB much better. Not being a taper though I don’t have a good reference point. In fact back in the day 73, hell pretty much any pre hiatus tapes were hard for us to come by, at least good sounding ones...were so spoiled now my reference point has been skewed big time, which is nice!
Been listening at work so not ideal conditions as far as sound and concentration but in some ways that’s better. Much is subliminal in the background but often when something stands out I’ll really start to notice. Tennessee and Playing did so in the first. Believe I thought the Bird Song was mediocre? Second set was great. The progression with the horns is interesting as it seems both the band and the horns get a little bit tighter every show. You can definitely tell what they were more familiar with i.e., WRS/LIG and what they seem to be winging it on i.e., Truckin’, Mags etc..
I like the horns, though due to the idiosyncrasies of SBs they’re perhaps too up in the mix which would make sense...
I also assume that in typical GD fashion they probably didn’t have a ton of rehearsal? Perhaps one of you in the know intrepid travelers is familiar with some history on this? Would love to learn more about this unique tour.

Would you want to have the horns all the time? Probably not, though if they had a side player who’d work for rate yet still have the chops, it might have been interesting to have someone more often to play specific parts with charts etc, but that’s not very GD lol. Like if they had parts all worked out like in the studio for Estimated etc it might be cool.
To me this was the same problem with Clarence or Bradford. It sometimes seemed like everyone was just blowing or noodling at the same time and not always hitting the group improve X factor?
Hell, imho that sometimes happened with Bruce and Vince in the mix too. I’ve always felt like the Dead could get too bogged down with too many voices. One reason I love the 71-74 five piece so much; all that space in the mix...

Ok, enough ramblin, on to the Cuse! Must of been awesome to see/hear that pre 74 like wall set up in that building.
Saw them there a couple times before they switched to that horrible dome, and though it did have a bit of a sonic signature like many of those old “war memorials”, I dug the place. Saw a great JGB show there in 93 I believe?

Alright, I am in on 4/5/89.

Okay GOGD, well that is great news if most of the reels are in the Vault for the Warfield/Radio City 1980. Let's get those puppies out!

And let's find out who erased some of the tapes.

You all covered a lot of ground yesterday. Nice work!

Bob T how’s Tour? One more show to go.
Can’t wait to hear all the tour stories.
I listened to tapes of the Stanley Theatre shows, they are sick!
Especially dig the Dark Star > Cumberland, Attics, Promised, UJB I heard yesterday from 9/27.
Wonderful wonderful stuff. 24 minutes into the furthest reaches of Dark Star the band pulls back the curtain and unloads the first and only verse. Too much!
    Really enjoyed that.
Still working through 9/26 just finished a real nice PITB at start of Set 2, and liking the looks of this set list, Stand Up, Sit Down, Stand Up, Turn Around, Stand On Your Heads, Woo Hoo. Dig it.

Marmaduke sure does seem like a kind hearted sole, I like the scene in Last Days of Fillmore where he gets the balloon for the little kid. Great stories Gollum & BTK!

Have you all heard “In The Morning” outtake from Surrealistic Pillow with Jerry G? Killer ’66 Jerry jams on that one, stumbled across it the other day. Well worth seeking out. It’s on YouTube.

DeadVikes with those 1980 Warfield / Radio City shows, I think most of it still exists in the vault. What DL was saying was “Unfortunately a lot of that was erased.” So I think it’s a scenario where you don’t have a couple of reels for a few shows, seems like all the acoustic stuff was saved. I think the SBDs that circulate pretty much reflect what’s in the vault. But, goes to show you don’t ever know.

I see OB went out on Sept ’73 horns tour.. WAAAAApppRR, SQUEAK, RARRRRP ;)

There’s some skeevy tapes, cringey stuff, but some gems as well, looking forward to the road reports.

Alright, keep up the good work you all.
I think I should be done with this ’72 jones after this 9/26 show raps up.

What’s that you say VGuy? 4/5/89

Hopefully we can make American Beauty - The Angel’s Share Outtakes a POD.

Some of this second set thunder was replaced by Dark Star, Death Don't, Attics, etc. Funny, I was just thinking about S>F in response to some 80's posts made on the Dave's Picks 35 thread.. that one of the big pulls for me in the 80's is Scarlet>Fire. Scarlet Begonias has that infectious, funky groove that just pulls me in. I can't imagine passing over these years altogether. Those opening two chords.. it sets the direction for the rest of the show.

89 Scarlet > Fires, 12 times played of 73 shows or once every six shows that year.

"Old man get some solders, keep them close at hand, the seeds that were sown yesterday now flower in the land, guard yourselves most carefully military might, plants that can not bloom by day must flower in the night" seems to fit right in to today. Concerning ‘DeadVkings’, how about The “Primo” ‘Warfield’ - RSD Release was sourced from The original recordings done by Betty and it’s important to know these tapes were never officially released or used on any past release official or not from the Warfield! Two solid LPs of “acoustic” Grateful Dead with Pristine & clean recordings, mastering & mix! An excellent snap shot of the dead doing their best playing & paying tribute to the Americana music style at the time in history.
Concerning ‘New riders of the purple Sage‘, my cousin is the Bass Player so the new riders are apart of my extended family for over 40 years now! What a long strange trip it’s been!
Take care everyone, be safe be kind & rock On!

Yo BC!

Just getting into 2/89 DV. Solid, enjoyable, maybe not RJ though..

Early 79 highlights:
All pretty good, unfortunately many Auds only, but some of those were perhaps better than an SB, and some of the SBs aren’t so hot..
Started out on fire but you can hear slight cracks entering the vibe by the end of some of these shows. Burnout and tension perhaps?
Really liked the MSG shows especially the eighth. Of course the 10th.
I can see why Dave Likes the 15, but not sure I found it best of tour.
But man that sequence from playing onward, phew, hell the whole second is great! Next 2 almost as good, then of course the unusual 20, and 21.
A brief speed bump perhaps but they solider on nicely.
By 2/3 their nicely back in step and Dane, still think if there’s tapes it would fit nicely with the rest of the Danes: Great Dane Box! Sorta status quo for the next few, nice Kansas shows, then a good, but not RJ big finale n the 17.
Good show, but enough moments of mishap that I felt it wasn’t RJ.
Too bad there’s no tapes as I could see a few releases here.
Something from MSG, the 10 with DS filler from the 20th, the 15 off of Dave’s list, Dane, somewhere, and BTK 2/17 - 422 idea!

Ok, I’ll get 2 more 89 this week, unless I get 49…

The understatement of the year.

I think much of the late generation shows suffer in comparison to the shows that were properly recorded. True, vocals and harmonies has declined but the band played on.

They are playing 7 7 78 today on Sirius XM as I write this. Boy that Peggy-O was something. What a great run to see as your first show(s)

I let a tiny fart out in the Dave's Picks 49 thread. Music posts don't seem to go through but the test one I made later did. Unfortunately I used up all my patience trying to get the good one through.

one of my first boots was the superb front of board Wagner audience for that first Red Rocks show Set I and Set II through Scarlet transition. pretty much every song in that first set along with that Cold Rain BIODTL and Scarlet is a favorite version. burned in my brain. its all exactly perfect.

so Deadvikes I just pulled out my copy of 6/23/74 at your suggestion. I have criminally underplayed this one. edit: I know this has surely been discussed already. I seem to have poor luck using the search function on this site, but let me see if I can find old posts, i don't mean to hijack this thread. I just felt a strong need to say "wait a minute!"

Holy shit Bob t! Good to hear from you. It has been a long time. Hope all is well.

Obeah, yes, the Doc was involved with getting Dave the photos, I will let him give you the story. I have no idea how to search comments on this site either. I listened to this a lot when it first came out but haven't listened to it in a while.

I was able to get a full uninterrupted listen in today. My god, so good. One of those shows, where nothing is rushed. Sound quality might be the best 74 material I have heard with the exception of the Grateful Dead MST.
One of my favorite versions of To Lay Me Down. Jerry's guitar work is so moving. Great WRS. Love the Jam out of Seastones and then you get the rest of the second set! What is not to like. That Dark Star Jam, Spanish Jam into a phenomenal US Blues, that takes it's time. UJB, OMSN, Casey Jones to close it out. What a great show!

Dig those PNE shows Daverock and the February shows OB.
Would love some more.

Only made it through the bonus disc as I had anticipated. Life got in the way yesterday. The Playin' went some interesting places I didn't expect. Seems the TOOs and Playin' were the interchangeable space jams in the middle from 72-74. Superb smooth China > Rider. Is there a less than great 1974 show?

IIRC Doc had issues getting his photos back. A trouper to give that gift to us all. Thanks Doc!

Been in the hospital for a week with pneumonia, wife with metastatic cancer, life, it seems, has dealt us a harsh hand...............

In regard to Miami. Yes, I supplied the photos, the story is from the deep Dead past, now merely a footnote on a footnote and not so important. I had a chance to make a very minor contribution to the community, so I took it and dealt with the fallout. Bad feelings yes, long since discharged, let's focus on the music.........

It was, after all, the kind of magic that only the Dead could conjure. Very fine and very interersting, consumate quirky gooey good old Grateful Dead. Apart from Providence (my second show), my favorite 1974 outing...........

Rock on,

I have to hit those 76 shows again.

Funny.. those post haitus releases shook me out of my 68 through 74 comfort zone, there was a period when I just couldn't get enough 80's (and 90's, toss in some 79 for good measure). High octane GD. I hit the Giants box pretty hard but spent some time in 85 (of course), Spring 90 and several shows in 89. I just couldn't get enough.

But hitting Dave's 49 through several listens was a nice aperitif and More 74 broke the spell. They played the WRS>Row Jimmy from DaP 13 on my drive home last night. Icing on the cake.

Grateful Dead, good for what ails (ales) you.

Thanks so much for keeping the spirit going. I'm mostly keeping up.

What a pleasant surprise! Lively show with a killer start, great set list, and in an unusual order. Was Jerry in one of his "clean" phases? Can't get more authentic on the Iko-Iko than with the Nevilles! And the drums segments (plural) were a treat. It's clear the band was having a great time. What a difference that can make.

But that show MUST be released!
Finished hitting all of 73 last year and I think the first six shows of the year would make a killer box, better than HCS!
Or,
A Great Dane Box, all the remaining Dane shows including the 2 73 reels…
Enjoy, that is a awesome show, RJ for sure!

EDIT: it’s on Dave’s list too, so…
