    What Fun!

Seeing how a new song develops. I don't usually go deep dive by listening to versions of a song one after another.
1st time played - 10-19-71 Sings "arm" instead of hand, does falsetto on "empty cup" which he also does a few more times including one in EU72 IIRC.
2nd - 10-21-71 Now says "hand" in 1st verse, then "arm" in 2nd and back to "hand" in 3rd, "cause such pain" instead of "cause so much pain" which takes over by the 10-27-71 show.
And a very minor thing like a the in "between the dark and (the) light". Not sure when the verse in question was dropped for good.
Couldn't find the 10-26-71 show in the archive but I assume it follows the trend. Placement of the verses and the solo change around too. And what searing solos those will become. Love this song!

That is some serious Fall '72 goodness from 10/24.

Love the early Comes A Time with the "lost" verse on the Fall '71 tour.

Week of February 19-25, 2024

Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we have Grateful Dead music from 1971, 1972, and 1973, three fine years in Dead history.

Our first stop this week is at Keith’s fourth show, on 10/23/71 in Detroit, where we have Casey Jones ; Me And My Uncle ; Tennessee Jed ; Sugar Magnolia ; Comes A Time.

Next is the big second set jam from 10/24/72 in Milwaukee, with a great sequence of Truckin'> Drums > The Other One > He's Gone> The Other One.

Lastly this week is the unique sequence of Morning Dew>Playing In The Band>Uncle John's Band>Playing In The Band from 11/1/73 in Evanston, IL, a bit of a precursor to the sequence the Dead would perfect on 11/10/73, 11/17/73, and 3/23/74.

Be sure to join us here next week for more music from the vault.

There's a verse in this one I don't know if I've ever heard. Need to check the studio version.

Here's the verse you are referring to. It's not even in the Annotated Lyrics book.
"The words come out like an angry stream
You hear yourself say things
You could never mean
When you cool down you find your mind
You got a lot of words
You've got to stand behind"
Peace

Thanks for transcribing that. Appears that this was only the 3rd time played and the song was new just 4 days earlier. I may have to check those 1st two to see if they have it too.

For deep diving that. I discovered that extra verse a couple of years ago, but never checked into it further.
I love that song too!
