    September 17 - September 23, 2007
We’ve got some outstanding music for you this week, covering a rather limited span in the Grateful Dead’s performing history, but it’s a span that includes some of the best years.

First up in our mid-September journey is Paris in 1974, where the Grateful Dead closed out their short tour of the continent. From 9/20/74, we have this very good Weather Report Suite>Stella Blue, and from the next night, 9/21/74, we have the second set jam featuring Seastones>Playing In The Band. It was rather rare for the band to join Phil and Ned during Seastones, but this jam works very well, and hits some remarkably deep spaces. One quick digression: while going through the Grateful Dead Movie’s outtakes in preparation for the DVD production, we came across some footage of the band getting together in a dressing room before the show on 10/16/74, the first night at Winterland. Evidently, they hadn’t seen each other since the end of the Europe tour, and while talking about the excellent music on that tour, Billy begins raving about the high quality of the recordings from the Europe tour, to which the rest of the band responds that they found the recordings equally impressive. Certainly some of Kidd’s best 2-track work.

Going back a few years, we are pleased to play a couple of jams from 9/21/68. This material is drawn from a very interesting tape, in that it features Phil, Jerry and Mickey, plus a couple of guest musicians, in a studio jam right in the midst of the period in which the Mickey and the Hartbeats shows were being performed without Bobby and Pigpen. From this studio session, we have a nice Clementine Jam and another very interesting Jam.

We’re going to take a detour away from our featured week and head off to May, 1973, specifically 5/13/73 in Des Moines, Iowa. From that excellent, long show (the first of three consecutive long shows in May, with 5/20 in Santa Barbara and 5/26 in San Francisco being the others), we have Here Comes Sunshine and a nice, long and spacey Playing In The Band from the second set, and from the first set we have the rocking combination of Don’t Ease Me In>Around and Around.

Finally this week, and in memory of Corinne Crawford from Berkeley and Vermont, is the mournful Death Don’t Have No Mercy from 2/28/69.

As always, we welcome your comments and questions. Feel free to write about anything. And be sure to check back in next week when we’ll have some stellar music from 1972, 1976 and 1981.

    Peoples, peoples...
I will slap the first & last man to insult Izzie. She will forever be held high, in higher standing than the water that flows beneath our toes, as we walk out of the departed Seas. But, what REALLY disturbs me, is the inexplicable, unpleasant fact that something may be seriously wrong with The Badger! I mean, is our cosmic guiding light actually succumbing to the gravitational pull of corporate hedgehogs-dom? PLEASE, say it aint so... Hang in there, folks. Better times are behind us, see?

Charlie never was the same again (and neither was the old man). The police broke up the school riot and despite Bob’s protests the battered Deadheads were allowed to go free (the Head teacher rescued the super-rare tape and still trades it to this day). The Deadheads refused to press charges so Bob was given a stern warning by the police and Charlie was banned by the school board for insulting his peers. In an attempt to drive the devil out of his son, his old man threw Charlie into the inspection pit at the garage for a week, from pelting him with rocks time to time. In the months that followed Charlie became scary, wild and uncontrollable, nurturing a twisted hatred that even shocked his father. Each night he patrolled the city in a rusty truck looking for Deadheads to taunt and terrify. Finally he was jailed for attacking a homesick head called Jed, punching him in the eye and kicking his faithful hound. The next summer Cindy and Charlene finally managed to slip away and join the Deadhead throng, happy to be free at last. Maybe you met them somewhere, braiding hair and painting faces (I think they changed their names), but Bob Ford never bothered to look for them. A year later he too was jailed for cutting the brake pipes of VWs and Nissans in the Stadium parking lot.

When he was released from jail the only choice for Charlie Ford was the army. There, they taught him some discipline. He learned to read and write and qualified as an electronics specialist, with a real gift for computers. Things went well until, in Iraq, his Lieutenant slipped Dicks Picks 1 into the CD player of their Humvee and the first sweet notes of ‘Here Comes Sunshine’ drifted into the back…. What happened next was later covered up as a ‘friendly fire incident’, and Charlie was quietly discharged. He was immediately recruited by a security consultancy belonging to charismatic business leader Harry Burton. Soon Charlie was earning the big bucks, supplementing his more-than-generous pay packet with on-line scams and with the proceeds of charging the army $10,000 per roll of toilet paper. He returned to the US exceedingly rich, but still deeply damaged.

Over the years in jail and the army and the months of drunken leisure as a security consultant, Charlie Ford fantasised his own special warped dream of vengeance for his humiliation in the school gym, hoping but never really believing it would come true. Charlie’s dream went something like this: - Gain control of all Grateful Dead Music - Create a website to attract the Dead Heads, drive them crazy and laugh as they fight eachother and -beg to hand over their money. - Get them hooked on MP3s. Then switch to streams infected with a virus that seeks out and destroys all Grateful Dead Music on their computers. - Sow the website with Cookies and Trojans in order to get to know who they all are and where they all live. - Equip a fleet of shiny black helicopters with giant electro magnets to fly over their houses and wipe all their tapes and hard discs. - Infect Sirius radio broadcasts with subliminal messages, brainwashing listeners into burning their vinyl and CD collections when a special version of ‘Here Comes Sunshine’ is played. - And finally! Broadcast live on TV the destruction of the vault and all it contains. Sometimes too, Charlie dreamt guiltily of that kind, warm, friendly group hug back at the school gym, but when he woke from such dreams, he purged them by whipping himself savagely with barbed wire. When he returned to the US Charlie Ford finally saw the chance to turn his unlikely dream into reality. Some time in 2006 he walked into the lobby of Richer Donors Inc with $100m in cash and a business proposition. The rest you know! * With thanks and apologies to Frank Zappa, Tom Sharpe, Roald Dahl, Bill Bryson and, of course, the Good Old Grateful Dead.

‘Here Comes Sunshine’ appeared on the old Taper’s Section as an MP3 for three dates: 3/26/73; 5/26/73; 6/26/73 (mysterious eh?). As a stream it has just appeared for 5/13/73, breaking the pattern in a way that is surely significant! Also, Tennessee Jed has never appeared on Taper’s Section. Figure it out. Maybe someone in there is trying to warn us. Vive la Resistance!

I hesitate to say you missed your true calling. But still. Brilliant. True story: my sister was once prevailed on to take a couple of my nephews to a Dead show in Ventura. Having been to Ventura the previous year and found it a lovely scene, I thought this was okay. Well, my sister's a bit straitlaced and was somewhat put off by the scene to begin with (I wasn't there, but based on her description I think she had bad luck in who she crossed paths with rather than the overall scene being nastier than usual), but things attained meltdown status pretty quickly. Seems a friend of my nephews had come along (these kids were like middle-schoolers at the time). Seems that, unbeknownst to my sister, this kid was the child of bitterly divorced parents. HIs mom was cool with him going to the show. His dad, of a more fundamentalist persuasion, forbade him to go and said that if he did go the devil would get him. So, confronted with hairy unwashed raving lunatics, which was itself quite outside his normal experience, the poor kid found this scenario all too plausible and flipped out.

I doubt that Rhino is run by a bunch of idiots, they have had too much success and obviously know pretty much how to run an operation that takes A LOT of old recordings, package them for sale to enthusiasts of those particular artists. Looking through my wife's and mine collection, lotta Rhino in there. So to say otherwise would not own up to the facts of their success and that they have, indeed, made available material that most of the majors simply will not deal with. My Doors Perception box set is really well done, kudos there. However, it would seem that in this matter, they are dropping the ball for some unknown reason, but, truth be told, we are probably a small part of their business. The bottom line is, if you really want the material, and this site is too much of a hassle, learn the torrent, you can get anything you want there. If the majors want to screw you, you can screw them back with torrent, just educate yourself... "If God had wanted me otherwise, He would have created me otherwise." - --Johann von Goethe--

Dave does a great job here, we should thank him. He also does a great job on Sirius with the 'This Day in GD History', or whatever the 'official' name of it is. He basically narrates some info about the clip that is about to play, and lets it rip. I heard a great PITB today from 9/21/72, 35 yrs ago, from The Spectrum in Philly - and was blown away. You can really hear the passion Dave has for these shows, and for the work he does. And besides, I get a kick out of his Canadian accent!

Don't do it, man. It will be alright, believe me. I've been married to an Irish woman for 25 years so, you know, arguing can become an art form, of sorts (even if it's the same argument for 25 years!). Don't leave man. Besides, I don't think you're allowed to leave. Being here is like the MAFIA, you're a member for life. Blackwater has all your info. and the tin foil hats are useless against them. We don't know all the characters in this drama and probably never will. Remember that being "correct or righteous" doesn't always equate with happiness. I opt for happiness and try to remember that the band allowed us to tape and trade (they even have a vine here on this web site) all we wanted. For anyone to expect to come here, to the band's site, and have downloads for free is a bit much, imo, although I can see the marketing sense as well, if done correctly. But why keep focused on that bit of negativity and dismiss the good? I don't agree with everything folks say but I've made a "friend" or two. Not bad, in this day and age, and for free. Like I said, if you leave tjc, I understand and I wish you all the best. Viva la Resistance!

"However, it would seem that in this matter, they are dropping the ball for some unknown reason, but, truth be told, we are probably a small part of their business." Of course we are. They don't release anything. They just rely on selling swag and reissued studio albums. Fucking pathetic. "The bottom line is, if you really want the material, and this site is too much of a hassle, learn the torrent," I've been torrenting for years and have literally thousands of discs and hundreds upon hundreds of shows - so many I could never listen to them all. But that doesn't mean there aren't sources in the vault I would live to hear and probably never will. FWIW, I should add that I have no interest in listening to satellite radio, either. The sound quality is absolutely horrendous - like low bitrate mp3s. Worthless technology for listening to music, IMO.

csmiller,Sad as it is, our generation is dropping like flies on a late autumn afternoon, in the Lilly fields. The demographics show there won't be enough of "our" money left to fill the tank of a modest sized yacht, in a few years, after taxes of course. Etheogens will get these kids a life sentence, one that won't do them any good anyway, or send 'em straight to Hell (well that's what they're being told in "church" and "school" anyway). Lawyers, Guns and Money rule the groove today so what else could "they" do? In 20 years the Grateful Dead will probably be all the craze in Japan and Asian Rim countries, not to mention China, where such ideas and business practices such as turning the world's art treasures into video games are as common as dollar bills. Where capitalism crushes all other creativity and free will, they'll be even bigger in the Karaoke bars, perhaps with the help of such innovation and definately (alcohol) intoxication. I don't know, maybe it won't be all bad just different, like death. "All energy flows according to the whims of the Great Magnet. What a fool I was to defy him."

Mark Karan ..... and they did goin' down the road and it was smokin', he's been in his treatment and has no hair but he looks good, well, and tonight i guess he was feeling good and he rocked the house, trading solos with Larry Campbell, ........ "don't wanna be treated this-a-waaay .... " i borrowed this from Mark Karan's site, i hope they or this site don't mind: "We are overwhelmed by the love, support, and prayers that have come from around the world. Please keep him in your thoughts for the journey ahead." -MK family shout out to Mark, and Phil, and peace out everybody the abundance mentality says 'there is enough grateful dead' and doesn't make one want to cry about the mp3s, if you really want taper's section songs you can have them ... make like Marl made tonight and rock your world with what you have ..... dt in berk
