DaP 6 - Disc 1- This was one of those early returned reels miracles. That Dark Star was a favorite long before DaP series was a twinkle in Dave's eye. Blew me away when they announced this one. And as an added bonus this release has yet another Dark Star (DS > Stephen > Eleven) 12/20/69 Fillmore Auditorium, San Fran. Oh and it's got 2 Mason's Children. And wait there was even more for subscribers - a bonus disc featuring a big chunk of 12/21/69 Fillmore Auditorium (if you're keeping score that makes 3 Mason's Children. And 2 New Speedways. A couple of Cumberlands. And an Other One. Lots o' Pig.

Getting ready for a long drive to the snowy north to spend Christmas with some of the family. Might even get in a ski run or three. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

1st set goodness with a sweet To Lay Me Down and that whacky-doodle '74 style Playing - which I SWEAR has the genesis of Shakedown Street in the middle when Jerry gins up that funky groove/phrase and they all play with it for a bit ... Some technical issues skew the start to the 2nd set (moisture everywhere, Phil says) but I think Seastones 'unbalanced' the speaker/sound setup
Once they get it figured out though, the Eyes is d*mn strong - and the China Doll that follows is as delicate/pretty as it gets (outside of a missed vocal note or three). All that, and there's still the big Jam with Caution! to go ...
    Have a good afternoon everyone!

A freak after my own heart! I only have a mere bakers dozen to finish off my quota: The seven final 79s, the last 3 84s, and first three 85s.
Then maybe a little free range freakin, perhaps start poking around 1970,
But…then onto all/most of 85, few remaining summer 90, dip my toe into 95, perhaps a pinch of Fall 80, with more 1970 sprinkled about?
But first things first, nice Dancin happening here/now on 12/10.

DaP 1: just got a copy thanks to one of our favorite folks here ; ) and so have only heard it once, but it did get my attention lol

2/17/73…first 5 or 6 shows of 73 = best 73 box eevveerr, and depending which way your pleasure tends one might argue GOAT? Ok, maybe that’s pushing it but ! Good Sheet Mon

10/24/71 is mos def a rrrripper!

And “if you get confused, just listen to the music play” 12/10/79 woo who!

Listening again this morning and I'm suddenly thinking about the St. Stephen encore (having a "??" moment) and sure enough, this is the first of only 2 times they played it with Keith pre-hiatus, which also means (for those of you playing along at home) it is the penultimate performance pre-hiatus. The second and last time was 10/31/71 in Columbus (DiP2). Curious how it dropped out of the rotation right at the beginning of Keith's tenure and only making it's way back in June '76.

now the Penultimate Edit - oh drat, my old deadbase let me down (as in my research wasn't thorough enough.) DB IX was lacking the set list for 10/24/71 Detroit and turns out they played it at that show, again as an encore into JBG. So 10/24 is the actual penultimate pre-hiatus performance. Oh and its got a big ole Dark Star also. I'm sure Doc has talked about this one but new to me.

Yet another edit: at ~13'15" of the 10/24 Dark Star Phil begins playing a base line that basically is straight out of opening of Eyes of the World?!

That 2/17/73 HCS > China Cat > Rider is sweet!

Steve Kuhn's 1986 gig at The Village Vanguard, with Ron Carter bass, Al Foster drums, "Life's Magic". Kuhn, now in his mid 80s has recently stopped touring. He's a little under the radar when the big name piano jazz comes up, a fine session here.

Morning rockers!!

Paperwork day, no autopsies, too much coffee.........

Well, not exactly today, but over the weekend listened to the entire Family Dog run of February/March 1970. Fun shows, great stuff!!

Re box set rumors, while digging into the dark dusty corners of my own archive I was reminded that recordings of the June 12 & 13 1970 Hawaii shows are in the vault and are very decent quality...............

I agree that this was a great and most welcome choice throughout 1974. Some great jams were resolved by going into this song - flying from outer space and landing smoothly on Planet E.

Has there ever been a time where they played shows from a soon to be released box set on Sirius/XM prior to the announcement of a box set? Just curious as I don't have Sirius/XM.

Would love to see those 80 Alaska shows come out or other 80 shows.

It's the bane of my life ( slight exaggeration) that Dicks Picks with segments of this and two other 1974 shows. I have never made notes about which song comes from which show, so I always have to get Deadbase down to try and figure it out. Either that or just forget about it and play the cds as they are.

The collector in me wants everything organized by show date.
I even have the Ummagumma live album in its own folder with the date.
I don’t do it to all non-GD bands. A lot of live albums are sourced from an entire tour so I leave them that way.

Love that this an official release. I was there. This was sort of a prelude to me following the GOGD for the next six years or so to the best of my ability. Good folks at local radio station WLIR. I still say the Calderone was a crappy venue, but they had great shows!

A fun, beautiful show on a gorgeous summer Saturday afternoon in the PNW. My youngest brother in town for an extended visit that ran through Eugene and beyond - seeing shows, backpacking the Olympics and Cascades, camping at Tahkenitch. Jerry's first public performance with Lightning Bolt - not that we knew that - all we "knew" was it all sounded fantastic. This show was just exactly perfect and would make a mighty fine official release.

...the Summer theme continues even though I just listened a couple of weeks back, 1991-06-24 SANDSTONE Amphitheatre...are you listening, it's SUMMER 1991! just a couple of days removed from Soldier field (anyone remember inside the stadium on the concourse, there were banners hanging with notable CHI football players, I stop and look up, and no shit it's Charley Trippi (a running back with the early Chicago Cardinals) oh man this is gonna be a fun few days!
We get to Kansas City on the 23rd (cheap flight from O'hare), rent a car, and go to tour this little unknown at the time craft brewery, Boulevard Brewing, and guess who is working the bottling line, yup nametag on his work shirt verifies that it's Trip! I kid you not. About 13-14 years later, I learn from a former manager that Trip was one of the 1st 5 employees @ Boulevard. what's next when we get out to Sandstone...?

Their first show at Red Rocks. And a killer show as we all know. In the July '78 Box (which I have and love). On Archive prefer the OctopusRider matrix (which I'm listening to now). There are killer audience tapes of this show - early on I had one into Fire transition and it became an integral part of my GD being. The first set is nonpareil. The Cold Rain Set II opener is the GOAT.

Hey rockers!!!

Right now I'm listening to the Hollywood Palladium show of September 9, 1972. It's a little outside of my serious comfort zone, but a very fine show and definitely worth a listen.

This was officially released a little over a year ago, and seems to have been quickly forgotten. There's actually quite a few really good later 72 official releases, worthy of relistens every so often...........

I know, you're shocked, Doc raving about post-E72 shows. No I didn't fall down and hit my head. But last night I did fall outta bed while dreaming of a February/April Fillmore West 1970 box set.............

My masters are strange folk with very little care for music in them.....

The Police - February 1979 - today it's known as University of Hertfordshire but back then it was still Hatfield Poly. Great show, there's video as well (believe BBC? Whatever, it's good stuff)
