30 trips around the sun USB question
I have a Major important question about the USB Besides the fact that the USB is the same price as the box set, the fact we don't get the book is an issue, but I know you won't be doing anything about that.... which honestly kinda sucks Given the cost to produce the USB package vs the cd package (but still charging the same don't seem right, if your being honest with yourself....you should agree) Most importantly..... Will the 2nd sets of these shows run uninterrupted ? CDs fade out at end of disk two Fading back into disk three..... l hate that, can't sit back and chill to a second set that way! The reason I bought the USB is so there would be no breaks in the middle of the sets like the CDs will obviously be. This is probably a major issue for all people buying the USB (Even though there is only 1,000 of us) We don't get the booklet or the fancy box But that's not a problem, if they run uninterrupted I did not want the CDs for that reason (and storage too) as well as wanting 24/96 resolution (sweet) Has this question been brought up by anyone?and I hope you guys were smart enough to master the USB as uninterrupted shows, unlike the CDs (more work for you guys but you are charging enough for this package now dubbed "BOXILLA") I truly will be disappointed if there is breaks in the middle of a set This issue will be a major problem I'll want my money back if they are these interruptions, so....... Look forward to a response Thomas A. Violagis Jr.

Well, the estimable Monsieur Lemieux says it best himself, elsewhere on dead.net: "6/10/73 at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC, where the Dead played two shows with the Allman Brothers Band and Wet Willy. These shows have long been considered for release, and it's only a matter of time before we see them mastered properly and released. They're really exceptional." So let's just get this show out there already--- PLEASE !

I know there's got to be plenty of footage of stage shows, T.V. appearances and whatnot that aren't available to purchase on video. For example, the recent Bob Weir doc (The Other One) showed a clip of them playing Shakedown Street on some show (I think), probably around '78 or so, and it was a great performance. When considering introducing a friend to the Grateful Dead via live performance on video, I don't feel I have a lot to work with. Performances showcased on the Woodstock dvds, Festival Express, etc have very limited material. I've got the Grateful Dead Movie, Closing of Winterland, Trucking' Up To Buffalo, Dead Ahead and a few of the View from the Vault installments, but I know there must be a ton more from the '70s that haven't been officially released. If there aren't a lot of whole shows to put out, even a career spanning compilation of live performances would be nice. Just please don't make it a 20 disc/$400.00 set. Thanks for your consideration!

First, I'll second the recent Wall of Sound shows box set request as a good choice- absolutely love '74- including a full 6/18/74 and 6/23/74 in a box set, for example. Or perhaps a good '71 box. Even more so, though, I'd like to see releases from the first half of the 80s, which have been so neglected in the Dead discography- some greats include 8/28/81, 4/19/82, 9/21/82, 4/16 and 4/17/83, and 7/22/84. Plus of course a bunch of '85 shows. And speaking of '85- Spring and Summer of '85 had so many great shows- the band was crisp and energetic- 3/25, the Nassau shows, 3/31, Meriwether- 6/30/85! Great shows from later in the summer and early fall, too. And while I do love '68-'74 most of all, and '77 quite a lot, obviously the early 80s have been so underrepresented (and are my favorite Dead era after those above)- not sure if it's simply the quality of the master tapes or what. There's enough strong and unique playing from that era to merit these kinds of releases. Still, a re-release in some form of the Fillmore West 1969 Complete Recordings box set would be EXTREMELY APPRECIATED by many people here who missed getting it during the extremely brief period before it sold out- and from what I recall, it was fairly affordable by Dead box set standards. Finally, on that note- please no more $200+ box sets, unless like Europe '72 the shows can be ordered individually!!

A couple days ago on Sirius TIGDH David Lemieux played some tunes from the 7-1-1973 Universal Amphitheater show. I was fortunate to see 2 of 3 of this 3-night run 6-29, 6-30, 7-1-1973 and was wondering if it could possibly be considered for a future small box release. The venue was brand new and still a virgin open-air outdoor amphitheater was since converted to an indoor venue. The GD was THE very first act to play there that weekend and covered a lot of the newer & as-yet unreleased material. Frank Sinatra was the "Official" first artist doing a week of shows a few days later but the Dead had already christened it in a spectacular way.
This was a short notice ticket sale event that as I recall was only listed locally 2 or 3 weeks before. I went to the box office on day of Saturday show and scored 2 front row seats on piano side of the stage with a great view of Garcia & Weir and some great interplay.
Should definitely be given a listen.

End 2023 with Watkins Glen release.

2024 box set: 1974

2025 box set: MASSIVE 1985, and give us working class folk enough notice to pull the money together for it, thanks in advance.

As always a crispy Summer 82' box set someday.

The end of the Summer Tour in '91 was hot, hot, hot! So how about a box with the DVD/Blu-Ray of the 6/22/91 Chicago show, boxed up with the following three shows--6/24 & 6/25/91 (Sandstone--both shows have been played on SiriusXM) and 6/28/91 (Mile High--which was on a GD Hour)?

The three shows at the Richfield Coliseum (9/4-6/91) to kick off the Fall Tour were pretty dang hot as well . . .

Thanks for your consideration!

it seems to work for the CDs why not try it with vinyl? The pressing plants backlog has gotten way better why not offer 4 box sets a year (just an idea could be more/less) This would be way cooler than just something else for Record store day. Made to order type deal...this way the fans get what we want and no worries about investing in 10000 box sets that may not sell out. Id be all about it...anyone else?

With next year being the 50th anniversary of 1974 why not release the 2005 Grateful Dead Movie 5 cd Soundtrack as a vinyl box set? I’d also love to see the Ladies and Gentleman the Grateful Dead 4 cd box set come out on vinyl. Both would be big vinyl box sets but I’d dish out the cash for it. Both come from 16 track recordings and would sound excellent on vinyl and look great next to my other GD box sets

June/July 1985.

Dave was quite enthusiastic about summer 85 in his office chat, yet picked Frost for DaP49.
So hopefully he’s saving the summer shows for a Box.
6-27,28,30
7-1,2,13,14
Maybe a few more since some of them will fit on 2 CD’s.

Hey rockers!!!!

Next box? Early 1969. From the OSF reels. Will include Vegas from March and the Avalon run from early April. Unless they want to hold Vegas for single release and include the Ark shows instead. Or maybe the February Philly shows? Heck, make it a mega mega box!!!!!

I have no definite talent or trade, and how I stay alive is largely a matter of magic......

Doc
You must learn to be still in the midst of activity and to be vibrantly alive in repose......

That's it exactly Doc. Just whats needed for a 69 box, after the FW supernova, shows you note, Avalon, Ark, et al first half of the year represent the mature, fully flowered primal phase. Fortunate to have some as downloads, audio issues would resolve with a most welcome update by Norman and crew. Time to revisit FW early June series, been a while.

For anyone who has the HCS box set, take a look at the "Producer's Note" section of the booklet. I found some of this worth a reread as we await this year's box:

"Every one of the boxed sets is a thrilling, 18-plus-month process... the ultimate goal is for Deadheads to acquire a beautifully packaged, sonically spectacular piece of the Dead's aural history..."

"...as I write this, in February 2023, I'm already deep into work on the concept and the music that will become the 2024 boxed set."

So there's not much else there to hang your hat on as far as what will be released this year, but it's still a pretty good window into how things work. One more tidbit for now:

"And a little-known fact: a few years ago, when we released the Pacific Northwest box set, we very nearly released these five shows [HCS box] instead. It came down to the wire."

Box set recap by year

HCS (2023) - '73
Garden (2022) - '81 '82 '83
River (2021) - '71 '72 '73
June '76 (2020) - '76
Giants (2019) - '87 '89 '91
PacNW (2018) - '73 '74
GStL (2017) - '77
July '78 (2016) - '78
30 Trips (2015) - all
Spring 1990 TOO (2014) - '90
May 1977 (2013) - '77
Spring 1990 (2012) - '90
Europe (2011) - '72
Winterland (2009) - '77
Winterland (2008) - '73
Fillmore West (2005) - '69

I've left out all the single-show releases and even the two-show mini boxes like Warlocks (2010), RFK Stadium (2017), etc. This was just meant to capture years represented by each of the annual big-budget box set releases. I also left off Grateful Dead Movie Soundtrack because it's so piecemeal; it feels more like a massive Road Trips-style box. But YMMV. Hopefully I didn't miss anything.

One thing to note: this still-hypothetical AK/HI box would fill in two gaps ('70 and '80). I'd also note there's been nothing from '69 released in nearly two years (since Dave's Vol 43) and given that the year 1969 now lies 55 years in the past, perhaps 1969 is (over)due for some love here in 2024...

Many of the road trip series releases, especially earlier on, were partial compilations. How about a series of boxes remastered with plangent called the complete road trips or similar. Would contain the complete shows from anything included in a compilation disc. So for example, the very first road trips, fall 1979, would yield : 10/25; 10/31; 11/6; 11/8; 11//9; 11/10. Could do one a year.

It seems that Southern California has gotten the short shrift. Yes, they released 2 UCLA shows and one Santa Barbara show, but the Dead played Hollywood Palladium and Hollywood Bowl, 13 times at The Shrine, 12 times at Long Beach Arena, 11 times at Ventura County Fairgrounds, 15 times at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheater, 3 times at the Universal Amphitheater, 7 times at the Forum in Los Angeles, Carson, and many others, not to mention 18 times in San Diego. How about a Southern California box set or two?
