Yep, using the server to listen is mucho convenient, but it’s nice to have the original stuff, not only just in case, but it’s fun to look at and hold and read etc.!

If/when I get time, I can probably help you with some of those missing items you’ve mentioned…

yeah Oro -a lot of fine music there. I never took part in those Shakedown Streams. my mistake.

one of the reasons i compulsively don't get rid of stuff, say the music at hand, is that I'm a firm believer in coming back years later and "seeing" it anew. and that's the case here.

my specific case in point - a n-th generation board of Rotterdam 5/11/72 Dark Star through Trucking. Huge level issues, one side pegged out and the other non-existent. yet somehow balanced but way way way hissy. got it in '82. other tapes in that trade were way better to me (and they were really really good too). one fine summer mid--summer day '87, after midnight one or so, I pulled the Rotterdam tape out of its forgotten drawer purgatory and spun it in the dark listening with the crappy headphones I had in those days . and it blew my mind. a complete and earth shaking revelation about the Europe Tour.

will admit that the compulsive behavior behind that may-need-to-revisit makes for a cluttered house.

3/30/90: don’t think I’ve heard this one so much, why that is I don’t know because wowsa what a show!
I listened to most of 3/29 after and I think the 30 is an overall better show! Sure the 29 has the sexy set list and BM etc, but from start to finish the 30th is tight! And a triple shot of Jer bear, fo-git-a-bout-it.
Now Need to check out the 28th soon also? The Healy Miller sounded fabulous too, even on mediocre equipment, great show, great pick!

2/22/74: (bonus disc) starts out a little ruff, but by Loose Lucy things have entrained and the sound is dialed in.
Not sure I’ve ever heard a bouncy Roses. Ruff but fun! Playin is what you’d expect, beauty eh! Has a nice short but clear and concise Slipknot reference too! Can’t recall the Ship off hand (alcohol and listening at night sometimes will do that) but I’m sure it was fine like the rest of it. I’m not familiar with the show, but wonder why he didn’t use some of the more extended stuff? Probably not enough time using using those “first” versions etc.
Certainly great music but will have to listen more, not sure it stands with some of the previous Bonus discs which can sometimes be as good or better than the release itself. But that’s just being more a critic than a fan, and the fan is glad to have it and will enjoy it for hopefully a long time. I do distinctly remember wanting to keep going and get into 2/23, but I know how much I prefer to do virgin listen in the morning, when I’m somewhat fresh, with coffee and a nice light morning buzz, but before the weed takes over the conversation. So that’s what’s happening next, woohoo!

5/6/70: what a surprise! Hit this last thing last night and man what a good show. Sound was a huge surprise (went with the Bill Koucky) SB. I had a tape of this, so i must of liked it, but don’t recall it, so came in thinking it was going to just be another ok show with less than stellar sound, no sir! This was one of the best unreleased 70 shows I’ve heard , so far, since I’ve not heard as much as other years…

Believe this show is historic too. Wasn’t this the one where campus was shut down so they came in a bread truck and/or laundry baskets or some such stealth mode? Sorry too lazy to look up, but I’m pretty sure this is the show, which of course was part of a nation wide campus strike 2 days after the disgusting massacre at Kent state. Michener’s book on it is a really interesting must read for anyone curious about that unfortunate day in American history.
What’s really impressive is how well they played in spite of how cold it was. I’ve read about that, and Phil makes several comments during the show about it. So for a stealth, unplanned (meaning suboptimal logistics) outside gig with less than stellar conditions, it makes it that much more impressive how good this show is!

Wow, what a couple of days of dead. And hopefully we’re gonna take you higher with 42!
Only wish DV hadn’t pissed off Rhino so he had his too ; ) teasing of course!

Oooppss, forgot to mention Egypt BC. Not sure why they slag this so much? Sure it’s not the overall tightest, but I seem to recall Jer ripping at times? Haven’t heard it since the Shakedown Stream (man those were fun and much needed, even the other half was participating and she’s not even a head!).
But I recall thinking this isn’t so bad at all, lots quite good actually. And talk about historic, yeah DV I’ve read a fair amount about the whole endeavor, and it’s quite the GD madness some how they pull it off trip once again, misfit power! I believe Keasey has some interesting stuff on doing recon etc in ? Spit In The Ocean? Somewhere? there’s some good sheet to be had!
    Ok,it’s go time buttercup!

PS, happy happy joy joy to Mr Bill

so slowly dawned on me that there was a DVD also with that very rare animal of live concert video footage. cut right to chase and started in on pure Egypt 78 which is Ollin Arageed. So very cool. Worth the price of admission right there. and then into Fire. Jerry's got a wall to wall grin and Phil is that animated Phil we all know and love. Cameras are a way bit bouncy at times but still pure gold. Got to ask though - did they have to cut out the tail end of Fire? Very much muy ouch. And they did it again on All Over Now. stop that! Phil is singing on Trucking! And new found appreciation for the jam out of Trucking. Really really fine.

50 years ago SimonRob was at Bickershaw in the cold rain and mud. Maybe we should revisit that epic show on its anniversary?

Agree with you wholeheartedly on 3/30/90.

I will take the Egypt release with me in the car today. Such a fascinating trip, the whole process, how it came about, financing the trip, borrowing the Who's sound system from London. And there is a lot of good music there. My memory is the bonus disc wasn't that great, but I will have to check it out again and confirm.
Enjoy your #42, mine is now scheduled for next Wednesday. So at some point I will join you all..
And I hope we don't have to wait until July/August until we find out about this year's box.

what a kick ass show. every freaking second. started yesterday afternoon and finished this morning. Great late era Help > Slip > Frank opener. Excellent Standing on the Moon, such a beautiful song. Attics?- OMFG. what a mind blowing encore. riding the same big wave of the previous night. Listened to the Miller cause I don't have either box - what was I thinking back then?!

I mentioned the Egypt release a few days ago though not specifically as a POTD. It was something of a disappointment back then. I guess they chose it because it was a multitrack and an epic adventure. Been years since I listened to it. so far given Disc 2 and the bonus several spins. its got its moments. the Shakedown is very cool to me. I got to thinking that it had to be only the second or third time they played it and sure enough it was second time.

4/17/69. thanks Doc! ran through this one several times. more classic '69 goodness. is that Bobby playing slide on that early Hard to Handle? seems a tad rough. the It's a Sin segue in St. Stephen is energetically jarring, interesting but not really feeling it (will have to "relisten" again.) Really painful to have Caution cut off like that. Damn.

Have a good safe and fun weekend everyone. Started in on DaP 42 and boy does it sound sweet. So that's where you'll find me later today.

Man, they played some goods shows at Nassau Coliseum and this one to my ears is one of the better ones. I haven't listened to the full show in years. Of course you start with a Help Slip Franklins and end with an Attics of My Life. And all kinds of greatness in between.

Hope you were able to enjoy it OB. Jim, you are still behind.

It is finally warm here in MN. Enjoy the weekend all.

I'm in for 5/6. It's been ages since I listened to it. A neat little show with some history I believe..

Up early on my second cup of strong, dark roasted Kenya Nyeri Chinga. Yummi Double Dose.

I like almost all the spring 1970 stuff that was fortunately recorded. Some of these are sleeper, under the radar shows or as Doc says - well worth a listen. I like Alfred a lot for some reason too. Bottled history that seems to improve with age. When you take these shows in context that have something to say. I think this one might have been the first time they played since the Kent State Massacre, if not the first very soon after.

Anyway enough caffeinated blabbering, I'm in.

Not sure if there is a better year, so many great shows and yes, sound quality on releases have varied over the years. Would be interesting to hear 10/19 with Plagent.
I think the HCS Box sounds better than the PNW box.

Which reminds me, I should listen the Des Moines show tomorrow.

Would love to send some rain your way Jim. We have had more rain here in the last three months than we had in the previous three years.

July should bring us the 2024 Box reveal and for sure Dave's Picks #51. What will it be?

85, 77 and 69? 91?

I saw that video hanging around there.. like an hour and a half. I've been crazy busy doing useless crap for other people lately.. so I only got about a third of the way through it last night. It must have been uploaded recently.

Needing a pick me up, how about 5/7/89, something someone we all know and love mentioned on the Dave's 50 thread. I don't think I have listened to it.

Sorry about your rain DVikes. If you pee in the river I live on it would probably double the flow. (not that I am recommending peeing in rivers, power to the fishies)

Sweet, fun (partial) listen yesterday - Cold Rain and Snow through Samson. Phil way dialed up in the mix - that Let it Grow opening - whew. The Samson entrance may be the most laid back, in that '76 way, that I've ever heard. May rewind and def will finish that show. 9/27/76 you say?! Onward back in time to the show that was the day before!!

Excellent show, for sure

Currently I am on disc 3 of JGB at Kean College

I also have JGB 8 29 87 in the "eventually" cue

Thunder is good, thunder is impressive; but it is lightning that does the work......

On September 27, 1976, the Dead brought the thunder AND the lightning. I should know, I was there. It's a long story, but here's the Reader's Digest version:

It's a long way from Amherst, Massachusetts to Rochester, New York. We completely missed out on the June Music Hall shows, were disappointed by Colt Park, and were hot to see the Dead. Why Rochester? I'm afraid that reasoning is lost to the ravages of time and memory, but off we went. We took our excellent doses too early, and by the time we hit town we were on one of the outer rings of Saturn.

Even though Providence 74 was still somewhat fresh in our faulty memories, Rochester impressed us, especially the very big, bobbing & weaving, waves crashing second set.

How we made it there and back in one piece, only our guradian angel can tell...........

The man who has perceived God looks upon all types of men as dream motion-picture images, made of the relativities of the light of cosmic consciousness and the shadows of delusion......

Rock on,

Doc
Long before the awakening of thought on earth, manifestations of cosmic energy must have been produced which have no parallel today......

Pretty sweet Doc, I would have loved to see them in 76.

How about a pick?

7/31/82, Manor Downs from the 30 Trips Box. I am channeling an 82 show for #51.

Thanks for the visuals.

It happens to best of us.. you try to time everything perfectly and it kicks in way before your ready to follow the yellow brick road in the land of Oz. That cracked me up resulting in a waste of some perfectly good coffee.

As for 51, there are some good sounding boards from 82 and Jerry's voice is mostly in fine shape compared to what was to become. I get the feeling one of these days we are going to get a Bruce show too. With all the back and forth on the Dave's 50 page Halloween 91? Hopefully we will get a good one. I'd really like to see a banana box or something very, ,very old and very very primal. It's been a long time since we got anything earlier than 69. If we get anything discussed, I'd be happy. Gotta admit, when the 77 came I was simply not in the mood for another 77. Still, it's an interesting release and I am sure I will warm up to it once I am fully in the mood. I hope they dial back on repetitive offerings a bit though and reach just beyond their comfort zone. At this point, to me, that's the sweet spot.

I would really like to know exactly what is in the vault and the quality of the tapes. Just a peeksie. After this heat wave we are going to step up efforts on that tunnel under the vault.

I'm going to play something with a Cold Rain and Snow. Replacing an exterior window in this heat has turned me into a giant, surly raison.

A Plangentized/Normanized Box of summer ‘85 next year for 2025 would be grate.
There’s enough material for 2 Boxes if it can all be cleaned up. Some shows have that buzzing or distortion that I had previously read somewhere was caused by a loose cable or something in Phil’s system.

I'm waiting for Dave's 51 to get my religion also. No offense meant doc but I do find myself reveling in that first Full Norman listen.

Saw TTB last year with Los Lobos, this year with Little Feat. Both shows were outstanding. Derek Trucks is a savant. Susan certainly no slouch, either. Worth $150 per ticket? Depends on one's financial situation.

Wife and I had a great time at a Bruce Hornsby show last week. He's still so good, his band always tight and having fun. Earlier saw Gov't Mule, Bonnie Raitt, plus Dead & Co. at the Sphere a couple weeks ago.

I love how well-behaved deadheads can take over a large city like Las Vegas for a few days. Looking at the gawkers who don't "get" the deadheads reminds me of those 1967 bus tours in the Haight pointing out all the filthy, miserable hippies to startled vacationers. Pretty hilarious!

I had a blast in LV. The visuals in the Sphere were mind-blowing, seats vibrating and bouncing during Rhythm Devils, just a great show all around.

Staying at the hotel attached to the Sphere, every time the elevator door opened, I said, "Oh, no. Deadheads!" I waited for the expected frowns before admitting my shared allegiance, eliciting hugs and high-fives. What a privilege to be part of such a kind community!

So grateful to be seeing live shows again after the musical desert during the Covid lockdowns. As Joni said, "Don't it always seem to go, you dont know what you got 'til it's gone."

Ice rider, and good ole DV, oh, and Bolo too, and, and, “all my friends, come around….”
It’s like old home daze lol
All that’s missing is Jimmy.
Glad yer back on water, but easy on that busted wing Hoss ; )

I have not “done the tour” YET, DV, but I’ve heard all the included shows except the third one?
Back when, 78 was another “fly over” because I didn’t put the work in, and relied too much on written nonsense. I started out getting weened on lots of 78 boots at the then current time, so that and negative comments had me uninterested, “until…until, until I say, that fateful day”, no not SF in ruins, but until DaP 37!
I’m sure I’ve pontificated enough on glorious DaP 37 (along with 43 and 49), my favs from last few years,(thanks so much D & C= Dave and company lol) but 37 really shown me the light and got me down the spring 78 rabbit hole! And of course being a audio idiot, this tours Betty’s are Magnifico! So, yeah, I’m psyched fo sho!

New blood, awesome!
Better late than never icerider!
Don’t be a feared, we don’t bite..usually lol
Only rule perhaps, don’t be a dick!
Best advice. Don’t read too much on the internet lol
Make up your own damn mind, there is no such thing as right or wrong. Just many flavors as Doc would say. Learn what you like by listening, not reading what others like. Comments make good starting points, the rest is up to you…
I like to read about shows after I’ve checked em out to get my own opinion.
If you get confused, just listen to the music play!

Jump on in, the waters fine!

Edit: DV, I’ve only streamed TTB recently, from the Greek.
Totally enjoyed it. Not going to get weird and go on tour, but I bet they’d be awesome to see live at least once! In fact, I bet their even better live.
WTH, it’s only money, and hey, you get to have a nice night with your Other One!
