Since we're all going to have a fair amount of spare time on our hands for the foreseeable future, what about starting another thread where we all listen to the same show/release on a given day and then share impressions afterward? Folks can submit suggestions and one person (not me) picks what we'll all listen to - call it Deadnet Picks or something. Anyway, if this idea is deemed to have merit, I'd suggest one of the loyal regular posters take the lead and do the picking - y'all can decide who. Might be fun. If it does go forward, I nominate Dick's Picks 18 for the first listen. Been talked about here lately, and, had it been a single show rather than a compilation, we'd probably be talking about it in the same conversation as Cornell, Veneta, etc. Or perhaps even Gainesville?? Stay safe and healthy, friends - this planet needs as many Deadheads as possible.

    Buying it again

I had Animals on CD, then bought it on vinyl.
I recently bought the 2022 issue of the 2018 remix on Blu-ray audio. The 2018 remix sounds great. Of the 6 different audio versions on the Blu-ray I like the uncompressed 24/196 stereo 2018 remix the best.

More vinyl - but no more music

Although there has been more shows released on vinyl in the last 12 months or so, the downside is that they have all already been released on cd several years earlier. Some of them in limited edition formats, granted. It can be seen in two ways - great for vinyl lovers, but on the other hand, also an exercise in getting people to buy the same music twice.
Mind you, that happens with new digitally remastered cds all the time too. And with all bands, too, not just The Dead. If you are over a certain age, and like one band a lot, the chances are that you will have bought their signature albums many times over.

While I am on here, maybe I should say that my POTD has been Dave's 14 - 3/26/72 at The Academy Of Music N.Y. And great stuff it is too - a new band really coming into focus with lineup, songs, equipment, sound and style all fresh as a spring day.

    Nice work OB!

I will check out 3/31/73 on Thursday.

Listened to the upgraded second half of 3/30/73. Above average sound quality.
These China Riders always deliver. I can't remember too many Truckin into Eyes, both good versions here. Eyes is still in progress. NFA, GDTRFB and close it out with OMSN. Enjoyable, thanks!

Interesting they are churning out more vinyl. Great for the vinyl buyers out there. I am not one of them. How about some more shows released on CD?

3/31/73: boo yah, this bad boy perhaps hangs with tour tops.
Dick talks about this one in his 73 notes…basically “the jams” and he ain’t wrong!
    Proper!
2/23/70: lol think I might of done this one but not marked that I had, though I marked it as a Doc POTD.
Anywho, great part of losing your mind: you can enjoy things again like it’s the first time ; )

9/18/83: I went with a great sounding aud, recorded by Jim Vita, delivered be Monsignor Miller on 2/24/23.
I’m going to have to keep an eye out for Mr Vita…
Not top shelf show, but another solid, enjoyable outing by the boys that provided a nice energy change up to complete the DHB!

    Hmmm, thought I did 2/23/70?
Well, I’m onto 3/31/73 at the moment, so I’ll have to check the above out later…

3/30/73 was a mixed bag. 1st set pretty 73 status quo, but unfortunately the recording wasn’t very good.
Second set (Eaton/Miller) sounded much better, and like the spring shows we’ve checked out the second set brings the goods! Besides the awesome Truckin jams, Eyes etc, these GSET have been smoking on this tour.
Not a bad show, but perhaps not top shelf.
EDIT: day late and a dollar short…looks like upgraded version mislabeled as 9/30/73.

This 3/31 sounds better and exhibiting nice energy from the start! (So far).

3/27/93: enjoyed. Not a bad show. Long/short I had sorta wrote 93 off, but I’ve heard about a half dozen now that have all been good, if not top shelf, which is fine. Hey, they all can’t be “the best”!
I got the Boxilla music only addition in 2018 in the midst of a shit storm I’ll never forget. I did manage to get it all ripped, but still haven’t heard them all, most, but not all. This show was one of them, so it was nice to finally check it out. Nice Bucket Bertha open, but Same Thing kinda brings it down for me. Never really liked this song no matter who did it, I guess I like the Bands version off of Jericho, and I guess it was a needed change from some of the blues tunes Bob beat to death! Really fast PEGGY O. Ons that plod too much aren’t great, but too fast doesn’t seem to work for this song? Good Jane, like Broken Arrow, but Phil’s trying to hard: I’ve heard better for sure. Fun Lucy, but as someone posted recently elsewhere, it’s like a different song. I don’t mind, and it’s a good version. Decent Cassidy followed by the last Casey Jones, which reminds me, what happened to Casey Janes? Love the tie dye bra, thanks again!
CJ not a burner, but fun surprise none the less.
Second set highlights include an Eyes opener, nice Days Between, OMSN closer, IFTL, which i used to think was a tad short and cheesy for a “real” encore, but years later it’s kinda fun. Jer sounds like he’s having a good show and the pinnacle has to be the Sweet Comes A Time which shows he could still bring it on occasion!
Don’t know the year well or well enough to really compare but would say I liked this one but perhaps not as much as the excellent show from 3/17/93, or 3/24/93 which was a nice VGUY POTD, but better than 9/13/93, which of course is on Dave’s list lol. Buckeye and Boo fah fa low are decent, and I remember thinking the RT from Cal X was a nice surprise. So like most years, there’s always something, just gotta poke around!

Another acoustic set jewel from early '70. very very sweet. that Me and My Uncle reminds me of Other Ones 8/29/2000 Fiddlers Green when Bobby brought out the acoustic for MAMU (> Ripple) and I really really dug it and thought wow that's the energy and sound forMAMU that was missing all those years. LIttle Sadie, Black Peter, Seasons of the Heart, Uncle Johns. Love it.

First of all, it’s very “incomplete”, with extensive audience patches, including almost half of the first set. Second, the soundboard portion sounds like, well, like it’s been stomped on.

And speaking of “incomplete”, the second set seems incredibly short, although it does have some cool jamming in the Good Lovin’. Is there a reel missing?

With so many good 1972 recordings, what happened with this one? Perhaps it shall be a “returned reels” release one day…………

Not sure if there is a better year, so many great shows and yes, sound quality on releases have varied over the years. Would be interesting to hear 10/19 with Plagent.
I think the HCS Box sounds better than the PNW box.

Which reminds me, I should listen the Des Moines show tomorrow.

Would love to send some rain your way Jim. We have had more rain here in the last three months than we had in the previous three years.

July should bring us the 2024 Box reveal and for sure Dave's Picks #51. What will it be?

I saw that video hanging around there.. like an hour and a half. I've been crazy busy doing useless crap for other people lately.. so I only got about a third of the way through it last night. It must have been uploaded recently.

Needing a pick me up, how about 5/7/89, something someone we all know and love mentioned on the Dave's 50 thread. I don't think I have listened to it.

Sorry about your rain DVikes. If you pee in the river I live on it would probably double the flow. (not that I am recommending peeing in rivers, power to the fishies)

If they made 10/19/73 sound better, I'd buy two just to thank them for their trouble.

This is some of the most-heady, well played Grateful Dead i've ever had the pleasure to hear!!

Sweet, fun (partial) listen yesterday - Cold Rain and Snow through Samson. Phil way dialed up in the mix - that Let it Grow opening - whew. The Samson entrance may be the most laid back, in that '76 way, that I've ever heard. May rewind and def will finish that show. 9/27/76 you say?! Onward back in time to the show that was the day before!!

Excellent show, for sure

Thunder is good, thunder is impressive; but it is lightning that does the work......

On September 27, 1976, the Dead brought the thunder AND the lightning. I should know, I was there. It's a long story, but here's the Reader's Digest version:

It's a long way from Amherst, Massachusetts to Rochester, New York. We completely missed out on the June Music Hall shows, were disappointed by Colt Park, and were hot to see the Dead. Why Rochester? I'm afraid that reasoning is lost to the ravages of time and memory, but off we went. We took our excellent doses too early, and by the time we hit town we were on one of the outer rings of Saturn.

Even though Providence 74 was still somewhat fresh in our faulty memories, Rochester impressed us, especially the very big, bobbing & weaving, waves crashing second set.

How we made it there and back in one piece, only our guradian angel can tell...........

The man who has perceived God looks upon all types of men as dream motion-picture images, made of the relativities of the light of cosmic consciousness and the shadows of delusion......

Rock on,

Doc
Long before the awakening of thought on earth, manifestations of cosmic energy must have been produced which have no parallel today......

Pretty sweet Doc, I would have loved to see them in 76.

How about a pick?

7/31/82, Manor Downs from the 30 Trips Box. I am channeling an 82 show for #51.

Thanks for the visuals.

It happens to best of us.. you try to time everything perfectly and it kicks in way before your ready to follow the yellow brick road in the land of Oz. That cracked me up resulting in a waste of some perfectly good coffee.

As for 51, there are some good sounding boards from 82 and Jerry's voice is mostly in fine shape compared to what was to become. I get the feeling one of these days we are going to get a Bruce show too. With all the back and forth on the Dave's 50 page Halloween 91? Hopefully we will get a good one. I'd really like to see a banana box or something very, ,very old and very very primal. It's been a long time since we got anything earlier than 69. If we get anything discussed, I'd be happy. Gotta admit, when the 77 came I was simply not in the mood for another 77. Still, it's an interesting release and I am sure I will warm up to it once I am fully in the mood. I hope they dial back on repetitive offerings a bit though and reach just beyond their comfort zone. At this point, to me, that's the sweet spot.

I would really like to know exactly what is in the vault and the quality of the tapes. Just a peeksie. After this heat wave we are going to step up efforts on that tunnel under the vault.

I'm going to play something with a Cold Rain and Snow. Replacing an exterior window in this heat has turned me into a giant, surly raison.

A Plangentized/Normanized Box of summer ‘85 next year for 2025 would be grate.
There’s enough material for 2 Boxes if it can all be cleaned up. Some shows have that buzzing or distortion that I had previously read somewhere was caused by a loose cable or something in Phil’s system.

They played the PITB from this one on Satellite radio about a week ago and I wondered why I have not hit it since the initial listen.

I'm waiting for Dave's 51 to get my religion also. No offense meant doc but I do find myself reveling in that first Full Norman listen.

Saw TTB last year with Los Lobos, this year with Little Feat. Both shows were outstanding. Derek Trucks is a savant. Susan certainly no slouch, either. Worth $150 per ticket? Depends on one's financial situation.

Wife and I had a great time at a Bruce Hornsby show last week. He's still so good, his band always tight and having fun. Earlier saw Gov't Mule, Bonnie Raitt, plus Dead & Co. at the Sphere a couple weeks ago.

I love how well-behaved deadheads can take over a large city like Las Vegas for a few days. Looking at the gawkers who don't "get" the deadheads reminds me of those 1967 bus tours in the Haight pointing out all the filthy, miserable hippies to startled vacationers. Pretty hilarious!

I had a blast in LV. The visuals in the Sphere were mind-blowing, seats vibrating and bouncing during Rhythm Devils, just a great show all around.

Staying at the hotel attached to the Sphere, every time the elevator door opened, I said, "Oh, no. Deadheads!" I waited for the expected frowns before admitting my shared allegiance, eliciting hugs and high-fives. What a privilege to be part of such a kind community!

So grateful to be seeing live shows again after the musical desert during the Covid lockdowns. As Joni said, "Don't it always seem to go, you dont know what you got 'til it's gone."

Ice rider, and good ole DV, oh, and Bolo too, and, and, “all my friends, come around….”
It’s like old home daze lol
All that’s missing is Jimmy.
Glad yer back on water, but easy on that busted wing Hoss ; )

I have not “done the tour” YET, DV, but I’ve heard all the included shows except the third one?
Back when, 78 was another “fly over” because I didn’t put the work in, and relied too much on written nonsense. I started out getting weened on lots of 78 boots at the then current time, so that and negative comments had me uninterested, “until…until, until I say, that fateful day”, no not SF in ruins, but until DaP 37!
I’m sure I’ve pontificated enough on glorious DaP 37 (along with 43 and 49), my favs from last few years,(thanks so much D & C= Dave and company lol) but 37 really shown me the light and got me down the spring 78 rabbit hole! And of course being a audio idiot, this tours Betty’s are Magnifico! So, yeah, I’m psyched fo sho!

New blood, awesome!
Better late than never icerider!
Don’t be a feared, we don’t bite..usually lol
Only rule perhaps, don’t be a dick!
Best advice. Don’t read too much on the internet lol
Make up your own damn mind, there is no such thing as right or wrong. Just many flavors as Doc would say. Learn what you like by listening, not reading what others like. Comments make good starting points, the rest is up to you…
I like to read about shows after I’ve checked em out to get my own opinion.
If you get confused, just listen to the music play!

Jump on in, the waters fine!

Edit: DV, I’ve only streamed TTB recently, from the Greek.
Totally enjoyed it. Not going to get weird and go on tour, but I bet they’d be awesome to see live at least once! In fact, I bet their even better live.
WTH, it’s only money, and hey, you get to have a nice night with your Other One!
