John Batdorf ~ Batdorf & Rodney, Silver~ in a rare acoustic show
Hi All,I just found out that John Batdorf, long an associate of Brent Mydland, is playing a show in the Los Angeles area. This from his website: ~~ ~~ ~~ Sunday, December 15th, 2013 4:00 PM John Batdorf Red Rocks Concert Present Sunday at The Book Store- Crown Books Store 6100 Topanga Canyon Blvd. # 1340 Woodland Hills, Ca. 91367 Price: $15.00 Donation I am thrilled to be opening a new series in the valley. This show kicks off the new series produced by Ron Sarfaty. Please come out and support Ron and myself so this can become a regular event! ~~ ~~ ~~ It's my local mall, and the space is a big, former Barnes and Noble store that they want to do some funky things in. I was just there, and I'm sure this is gonna have a Living Room Concert kind of vibe to it. If you're around the San Fernando Valley that night, I'll see you there!

Attention all you Dead Head Blues fans. There is a GREAT lineup of blues guitarists playing in Ventura California at Mission Park on Sunday 22 September as part of the BBQ and Blues Day of the California Beer Festival. My old next door neighbor from Ojai Mr. Robben Ford and two awesome ladies: From Texas it's Carolyn Wonderland and from Belgrade it's Amsterdam resident Ana Popovic. Many of you may have already seen Robben Ford with his own band or backing up John Mayall on tour or playing with Phil Lesh & Friends some years ago. But if you have not seen Carolyn Wonderland or Ana Popovic yet, well, you are in for a real treat! These two ladies are guaranteed to knock your blues socks off! So if you're a resident of the Los Angeles-Ventura-Santa Barbara-San Luis Obispo counties, and you're a fan of top-notch live blues guitar, you can't go wrong with this coming Sunday afternoon show in Downtown Ventura California. I will see you there! http://www.californiabeerfestival.com/ventura.php

These guys opened strong for a really good show by Steve Winwood last year at the Fillmore. Winwood's voice is still one of the great ones, up there with Jerry, Bob, Greg Allman, Muddy, Toots, Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Lennon, Jagger and Ronnie Van Zant. And the guy is just so musical, long guitar solos that never ran out of ideas and of course his keyboard playing has always been among the best. "Can't Find My Way Home" was fucking amazing. But I was writing on new bands so...The Wood Brothers opened and played original tunes with a strong American roots feeling. I would definitely see them again. http://www.thewoodbros.com

A lot of the better-known other bands have topics of their own. If you don't see your particular favorite with its own topic, feel free to talk about it here. And hey, if it takes on a life of its own we'll give it a topic!

Thanks for the tip. In case you missed it, there's a short documentary out on Vimeo where Stephen talks to GD historian Blair Jackson while recording for the slack project out in CA: https://vimeo.com/223074777

It's really cool seeing two GD nerds discuss the project's background. David Gans also makes an appearance.

They are obviously solid, very tight musicians. However, I found their recorded music to be almost muzac for Deadheads...excellent background music played by exceptional musicians. Luckily, I had opportunity to catch a live show, and for $20, I gave it a shot. All I can say is "Wow"...extreme energy live...very tight, almost disciplined live, but also highly creative and improvisational. They played about 2 1/2 hours non-stop with VERY impressive jams. I highly recommend their live shows.

Dave McMurray, saxophonist late of Was Not Was, has a new album of Dead covers, Grateful Deadication, which sorta came into being when he saw Weir do Days Between at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass a few years back. It's very good.

I may be spoiled, but Indianapolis has an amazing band called Starcat that performs music by the Jerry Garcia Band with a lineup that resembles Jerry's classic 90's outfit.

Wanted to share this up-and-coming tribute band, Shakedown Citi, that I just saw live. The group formed last year in the Citi Fields parking lot and really have something special going on. They play a ton of show in/around NYC --- I'm especially excited for their show at Hill Country Live on Tues. Sept. 3. You should be able to find them with a quick google search-- they got active website, socials, and a link tree for upcoming gigs.
