It has been awhile.
First show seemed more ragged than I remember, but the Hey Jude didn’t seem as bad as I remember?
Memory…lol
Always dig a Cryptical, and haven’t heard a Doin that Rag in fo ever.
Made me remember Phil shows and how he broke out so much of that awesome old school material many of us craved, yet never got to see the Dead do. Thanks Phil!
Second show seemed tighter to me, I guess they usually do.
Really dug the Duprees and Mountain’s. I wanna know how JG switches from acoustic to electric in under 60 seconds, those guys couldn’t do anything fast back then lol. But sweet transition anyway from Mnts, to DS!
And a 69 suite..nuff said!

Era comparatively, I’d call these decent. Pretty crazy to compare to just a few weeks later, but like Doc said, perhaps the whole Bill G short/multiple show BS?

This got me so primaled up, I hit 2/14/68, a recent acquisition (FINALLY!) thanks to the Real Gone folks!
As great as this show is, it’s interesting to compare to the 69 stuff only a year later.
So the Spanish jam put me in mind of 6/22/83, a personal 83 fav! (the show that is) So hit the great second set. “Maybe ya want a radioactive volcano in yer back yard” into the version of Bucket that made us familiar with that one. We were calling it a Elegant Pride as we didn’t know better!
The 6/22 Spanish Jam version starts a little hazy but builds to some nice spacey/special parts, but the catalyst for my memory thereof is that it was the first one that made me “know” it. Meaning, I probably had heard on some old tapes, but didn’t know what it was until hearing it enough to go, hmmm, what is that, it sounds familiar. Yet another of the cool things that Dead music brings, enlightenment. How many paths to how many other things, people, places, music etc have you been turned on to via the Dead? Moma, moma, many worlds I’ve come…

Anyways, enjoyed the pick, and dipping into a different era. Still kinda burnt I guess, but can’t stick in one era too much currently. Doesn’t matter which era, just need to keep jumping around or else I end up not listening to dead? Weird?
Guess that’s the great part of having thirty years to choose from, there’s always something to dig, cause hey, sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes yer just nuts! ; )

Edit: They played a good bit of this on Today in GD History. I will be honest; this was always an odd ball release for me. I guess doc is right, they were the warmup band and didn't have complete freedom to set the adventure that awaits the sometimes tripping but always experienced audience. Just a couple sentences that clarifies my show funk on this, and now it makes perfect sense. All is good with the world. (well, almost.. )

Made a copy of my friend’s CD’s in the late 90’s, then bought my own copy in the early 2000’s.
I’ll give it a play tonight.

Ordered a ‘new’ vinyl version a few years ago on Amazon. When it showed up it wasn’t factory sealed and had a bunch of scratches. I promptly returned it.

Really good recording. Fun first set with good variety and a deep elem blues.
The China Rider to open the second set is outstanding! I won't rank it, but it moves me. Nice Playing and later we get a solid Black Peter. Give this one a whirl.

82 has a lot of offer.

Okay, on to 2/11/69 from the good doctor

Easy to forget that one-but a joy nonetheless. Because they were the nominal support group on this date , they were playing with time constraints, which gives the sets a slightly different context. Whatever- both cds are superb.

Curious that some archival releases are now older than the shows were, when those shows were originally released on cd. It's not quite the case with this one - but One From The Vaults, from 1975, for example, was first released about 30 years ago - when the actual show was only about 18 years old. I guess as time passes people will become more nostalgic about the release of recordings than they do about the actual shows. A bit like how I feel about records that were released, and which I bought, in the 1970s. Eeee, I remember the time...

Pick of the day: Fillmore East 2/11/69

Masquerading as “the warm-up band”, the Dead played two short, sharp shots of psychedelia opening for Janis Joplin. Condensed big jams, greasy Pigpen, Mountains Of The Moon (love that song!), Caution. Need I say more? Oh yes, Hey Jude, does that call for an LOL???

However you slice it, a very interesting look at the band just prior to the classic Fillmore West Live/Dead shows of February/March 1969.

Hard to believe it’s been over 24 years since its official release in October 1997. Has it been sitting on your shelf all this time? Fellow rockers, dust it off, cue it up and enjoy!!!

Decent show, went with the only SB, but think I might of liked an aud better as the occasional less than perfect moments are accentuated by the formatt. Or maybe just more aware of such after the 77 perfection lol.
Perhaps JGs vocals are a tad out front? Crazy how well you can hear Bobs guitar.

Moments felt somewhat like an 83, not full on rail riding, but a tad more manic than I’m used to from 82. But that’s why we need to go deeper in 82! Still relatively uncharted for this ole dog. Really dug the jammy/spacey PITB parts. Remember the one we saw on 4/8 was pretty sweet. And hey, no Cumberland but it does have a rare electric Deep Elem!

Not exactly sure why I didn’t go? Milton Wilkelberry Steamer the 3rd was going so I had a ride, and I probably could of scraped out the cash for a ticket, which back then in these types of places you could usually score fairly easy, hell, be surprised if it sold out? But we had been planning on the 8 and 9, and in those days I was still pretty young and not loose enough yet to just go for it. I’m guessing the main reason was work. I was a roadie and probably had a hard time getting the Friday for the Crotchfester on the 9th? Not sure, looking back now of course it’s easy to second guess. If I had the John Deere…

Fingers firmly crossed for you. Similar thing happened to me last year and an honest individual returned it to me. Left it on top of the car after paying park admission, forgot I did so and drove off. No, I wasn't at Bong. It was Rocky Arbor in the Dells. Positive vibes flowing your way.
