Admittedly, I have not listened to this box yet. I opened it and inspected the contents and got back to listening to other things--namely Geese (they rock). You say there are 40 tracks unplayable? What shows? Has anyone else had this issue? It give me PTSD from the HCS box set and waiting for those replacement discs.

Now I have to get to listening except it won't be this weekend...too busy seeing live music!

Dead/WBRhino should adopt a system similar to Pearl Jam, who makes most, if not all, of their shows available. Ordering is easy, you can order as a CD or as FLAC, and the quality is outstanding. I get it is somewhat “apples & oranges” in that Pearl Jam records their shows knowing they will be released, so recording quality is top notch, whereas the Jeffrey Norman team must reconstruct some pretty old tapes for 21st Century listening that were never intended for release.
But the current system of Dave L choosing only 4 shows a year, that never gain full consensus, plus Boxes that often are hit or miss, there must be a better way.
You don’t need an Archivist to tell you what sounds good, anymore than you don’t need a Weatherman to know which way the wind blows.

Oh yeah, my one comment is that the next two picks are "a show," which means that the recently discovered '68 tapes won't make it to a Dave's Pick. Sooo.... how about GD/Rhino do a little special release next year that includes ... 2-3 '68 shows?

I first saw the band live in the early 80s. There was nothing better. Not even close. But that era has not aged well. If you like it, so be it. How many of you still have avocado or mustard colored kitchens? Or still wear bell bottom jeans. They were cool back in their time.

The 80s are rough with those plinky keyboards. They just are. Fun at the time, but unlistenable now. To me at least.

I won’t deny that there were some unbelievable shows. Augusta 84, most of the summer of 85, most of 87. Then not so much.

I’m truly happy for the folks that want the later era shows. It’s just not my thing anymore. This release won’t even get played.

When I first discovered the archive and was able to listen to earlier era shows, I was in disbelief. I couldn’t believe how much better the band was back then. To my ears. That music is timeless. Spinning 5/3/72 now.

Judas Priest. BITD I was into anarcho punk, crust punk, the UK82 bands, but I largely stayed away from metal. One night a friend and I were doing the thing people did back then - trading rounds and taking turns at "you heard this record?" I hit him with the first Discharge LP (talking about life-changing) but then he hit me back with Priest's "Unleashed in the East". I was super intrigued... a metal band covering The Green Manalishi? And covering Joan Baez?!? (Diamonds and Rust) It was one of those brilliant moments where I realized that my preconceived notions were holding me back from enjoying some amazing music. So it's great to hear Halford and Co are still rocking out.

Now then... HF, can you or can someone elaborate about on comment re: "...the recently discovered '68 tapes" ? Is this just a reference to Bear's banana boxes, or is it something else? For in the immortal words of PG Wodehouse, "you interest me strangely".

HF may----emphasis on may---be referring to the June 68 recordings I just supplied him with. June 8 and 9, partials, excellent soundboards, these tasty fragments hit general circulation in 2022. For some reason it doesn't get talked about a lot......

OR he may be referring to the previously never-circulated 1968 Dead recording that OSF referenced a while back. I forget the date but I thought it was May.

OSF also verified that they have the April 1969 Avalon run, although the 6th remains incomplete.

OSF hasn't put out any Dead releases yet but what they have issued is excellent quality and always very interesting. I highly recommned them...........

6-30-86 is soooo under-rated.
Was a HOT show. 13th row center in the pavillion.
I would personally LOVE IT.

I'm just a tad fuzzy this morning, so I won't look up the dates, but yes, Obeah, at least (3) known '68 tapes have not been released. As HendrixFreak, I'm acutely aware of the passage of time and the need for the band's early development to get a full airing. Forensic Doc probably covered an answer to your question.

I find myself falling into Angry Jack Straw's camp. I'm happy that an '83 release floats a lot of boats, but I'm interested in Norman-ized early years, specifically late '67 to '74. We've got most of '74, a ton of '73, leaving fall '72 as rich in unreleased shows that should be a box. Spring '71 still has gold in them thar hills. We know that '70 tapes are rare but whatever's there deserves attention. Then there's the writhing beast of '67-'69.

As for surprises, it's well known that a decade ago Mtn Girl turned over a few GD reels from the early '70s. And recently she went to an archivist in Seattle to digitize several boxes of reels and cassettes from Jer's stash -- mostly JG side trips, is my impression.

So, lots of goodies floating around. I've been a steady customer since 1971, though I stepped off the (GD) bus in '87, burnt to a crisp and tired of "the scene." Now it's down to the tapes. And I find myself focusing on the front end of the band's development. (Though '89 has some monster shows...) Those of us who want what's left of the '68 beast are gettin' old and NOW is probably a good time to get the early stuff out. (And get off my lawn, etc....)

Okay, rambling now. A second cup of Joe should help.

By that time Owsley was out of jail and back recording. We know he recorded at least one of the September Boston Music Hall shows. Hopefully he recorded the Texas shows---which would make a fine box set---and maybe just maybe those are in those banana boxes. The ones that I remain very curious about........

the show that benefitted the most from the "Plangent process" in the Listen to the River box is 10/19/72 - what we had before grated ... now is beautiful. Gracias, PTB.

Saw this release announcement. Subscribed, as I have since the beginning with the last Road Trips year run, and will continue to do so. I love these releases. This year's picks have been solid for me. The 1978 box is cool. I listened through every show once so far and there is some great playing, even with a lot of repetition in song choices for that tour.

Recently listened to the "In and Out of the Garden" MSG 83 shows from that fall tour and they are quite remarkable. The Hartford Dicks Picks 83 show second set pre-drumz segment has Jerry playing incredibly inspired. Brent was always awesome.

I'll never understand the resentment towards any era of the Dead. It's all good. Sure, 94-95 saw Jerry gradually dying from his health issues at a much too young age. I'm now several years older than he was when he died, but he was an old soul even back at the beginning of their career together as a band. I feel fortunate to have seen them about 50 times from 84-95. Almost every show I attended were great, well performed shows, up until the very last two where Jerry looked defeated from life, touring, addictions and the stress from fans that lost touch of the scene which led to incidents like Deer Creek 95.

More recently, caught the Phish shows with Billy Strings sitting in and they are playing fabulously these days. I hadn't seen them for quite a while (a few shows between 94-96 and a show in 2017). I feel I've been missing out and hope they keep that going.

Also seeing Stevie Wonder for the 1st time (fan for almost 50 years), and catching the King Crimson "Beat" line-up in a few weeks. Also caught Marcus King for the first time (great show highly recommended) as well as Warren Haynes on his symphony tour, Greensky (with Billy Strings yet again. Only recently picking up on his thing and that kid can play). Also caught a solo Trey TAB show, which was excellent, plus The Four Tops and Temptations on their current lineups (wish I could've seen them back in the day. Still quite entertaining, plus a couple of songs performed that Jerry covered!).

All in all this has been a fun year musically. If a certain villian gets enough votes to repeat and escalate his dismantling of our country, the fin stuff will evaporate and we'll probably all lose our jobs, pensions, retirements and God knows what else. All I can say is please vote and keep that ruthless crooked bastard out.

Thanks Doc and HF for filling me in on those '68 developments. I know there are some vectors like Dead Legs and Dead Air that seem to regularly surface new stuff - or new sources for existing stuff. Not sure who all is part of GEMS but they seem to do heroic work, too. But I tend to run behind the curve, so I appreciate this intel.

@HF I do share your wish the PTB would be a bit more... sensitive? attuned?... to the passage of time. As you said the '70 selections in the vault are pretty sparse. But all the more reason to work on what is there and get it released. If I could rub the lamp and get the genie to grant me influence with the archivist, I'd push for a 'sea change' in the way Lemieux et al approach the box set for the 60th anniversary year. Viz. I'd like to see them curate the entire vault contents for 1970 (or perhaps 1967 and/or 1968 - I pass over 1969 just because I feel it's well-represented already and the need is less pressing) and if a given date doesn't meet the necessary benchmarks to allow it to emerge as a traditional Dave's release (for ex. Vols 19 and 30), then Mockingbird Master what's there, and release it piecemeal. In this way one could build up a historic box... and the sparse nature of the vault's inventory for '70 should make this doable... if they could do 80 CDs for 30 Trips, there's no reason they couldn't do that again for this project.

This would be one of the most important and foundational archival releases that could ever happen, and it seems only right for it to get out while the remaining participants from that era are still on this side of the ground.

More realistically: it would not surprise me at all to see Fall '72 get amalgamated into a box.

The Diamonds and Rust connection with Judas Priest was quite deliberate... I think their producer suggested it to them as a way for them to get radio play in the United States. Somewhere there's an interview with Halford that goes into more detail. I think it says a lot about the band that they didn't dismiss it out of hand and instead really went for it. The whole thing is fascinating on many levels, not least because their cover of the song is quite good. And that's not just my opinion; Baez herself has praised it effusively.

In regard to 1970...................

Beginning in the Summer and continuing through the Fall and into early Winter, big chunks of 1970 are "missing", probably because they were never originally recorded. There are a few exceptions, most of which are worthy of release some day......

One of the more significant missing pieces is the September Fillmore East run, which was recorded clandestinely by the FE crew. It appears that a lot of those reels went MIA over the years..........

The FW runs of February and April are missing some important parts, maybe they'll be returned some day. Almost the complete June run is there, but I would not recommend those for a box set----portions are kind of rough, although what is there is generally very good............

Many early 1970 shows were recorded and are worth releasing eventually. I would really like to see Corvallis released some day-----really good show.

There are a lot of missing shows from the early years, 1966-1968, which were probably just not recorded or broadcast live on the radio. It appears that they started recording more consistantly in 1969, although frankly, some of those haven't held up too well.........

There are some "missing gaps" from later years, January 1979 comes to mind, as well as some individual "missing shows"----Detroit 10/30/72, with the mind boggle Truckin' comes to mind................

For those of you waiting for some good scans of the FOTDs box, I am sorry I am taking so long. . . Got back from Europe this past Monday only to have to drive a day later 8 hours each way to a funeral. Got back yesterday, and have out-of-town company coming Monday. Whew. One of these days. . .

In the meantime I'll check with our ace-up-the-sleeve, Coperdomebodhi to see if he has anything to share. Onward.

PS: Haven't had time to reflect, but I'm pretty sure we had an amazing time in Athens and Rome, even if we missed David Gilmore by a week. . .

The impression I get is that the shows from the first half of the year were much hotter than the ones that followed. Understandably, so - they were perfecting a well worn repertoire and approach in the first 6 months. After that they introduced more country based songs, and to my ears, it took a while to do this successfully. The jams seemed a little less impressive too, as the year progressed. I have never been that keen on 11/8/69, Dicks 16, for example - even though it's often hailed as a classic. I'm sure there are great shows across the year - but less so, perhaps, as it progressed.
Pity that all the Daves Picks from 1969 have been from the end of the year. It would be great if something from Jan -May could be released.

4/5 & 6/69 Avalon Ballroom, 6/27 & 28/69. Santa Rosa, 10/31/69 San Jose State. All these shows would make for fantastic releases.

The two Santa Rosa shows are definitely in the vault. The kind folks at the GEMS network put very nice remasters into circulation in December 2023. Very interesting shows. Oddball tuneage meets big jams. If rock and roll has to be weird, lord let it be like this........

OSF has the Avalon run, with a slightly more lengthy version of 4/6, I think by 2 or 3 songs. Apparently there are no surviving complete copies. This is a pretty remarkable three show run, with lots of big jams. Would make a nice mini-box, or maybe could be combined with the Ark shows, for a box set that would sell out in about five seconds..........

Not so familair with the Halloween show, although it sounds like we need an upgrade.

Desperately need an upgrade of Crockett as well. Probably wouldn't sell well as an official release, who really wants a 43 minuite Lovelight? Well maybe me, HF, and three others lol...........

46 years ago ( where does the time go) I was up at Winter land for a knockout of a show with the Good old Grateful Dead. Killer version of Black Peter. This would make a great release. Fun times.

OH YEAH!!!! In fact that whole run of the From Egypt With Love (10/17-10/22) shows needs to be Normanized, 10/21 is my all time favorite show from the entire year.

Regardless of what Dave decides to release it’s still gonna be bought but if it were me and I don’t wish that either I would’ve done the 82 Santa Fe October 17…why because I have the Silberman Sony PCM F1 Sennheiser 441s FOB of both the 10th & 11th and they are Crush i mean they are A++ Killer Sound and the sbd master analogs as well but I prefer this Silbermans Recording over the Analog Cassette Master Soundboards of this particular show including both days the 10th or the 11th and that’s relatively early for Any Digital Audience recordings to surface from…1983…Really!?! Very very few other tapers using the F1 Sony Betamax in the field !! The Sony D5 and the Sony D6 were reining Supreme at Dead shows along with the Marantz recorder! Oh schucks that’s my 2cents hats off and many thanks to the recently departed Mr Silberman he has given a lot to the Dead community Sonically and Spiritually! Thanks to Jerry his band mates and again to Dan Healy Betty Cantor Jackson Owlsley who Dialed up that Fn’ Clean Ass sound we bopped Chased and hung onto to through all these years God Bless you All and if not Oh Well !!

I don't think they announce the following year's first two Dave's picks by specific shows until December, if I remember right.
The early bird special is the main November announcements, then as a push for subscriptions they'll tell us the first 2 shows in December with bonus disc as incentive. With the January news email comes the #53 in depth analysis, I can't wait!

But 6/30/86 really caught my eye as you don't hear much about that under rated beauty! One of those had to be there that the tapes just don't quite capture.
One of the few shows we got good inside seats! We were such pigs on that tour it's a miracle we didn't just turn into a mushroom; )
