Days Of Dead

Dark Star
Hint:
Few songs embody the spirit of improvisation and musical adeventure like this one
day04_EKaGeZlKMnKxDzy_dark_star.mp3
Atlanta, GA, Piedmont Park
Recorded just a few months after the Live/Dead recordings, this terrific Dark Star shows the further evolution of the song after the Fillmore West gigs as the Dead transitioned into the Workingman's Dead/American Beauty era, while still easily playing primal music

    Fun Search

I was able to narrow it down to a few fairly quickly, but it was harder than I thought it would be after that. It sure was fun listening though.

just wow.

it's been a while since i've listened to this era.
i've been following along with Jesse Jarnow's 50 Years Ago Today, so been in 1974 mostly this past year.

this Dark Star is a breath of fresh air for me. though i can guess the time & place, this time i may not even be playing. just gonna put this on repeat for the next couple of few days.

i'm very happy to be back with you all this year !

I have a rough idea of the year but that’s all. Just grooving to this. What a fabulous version.

This DS blew my mind quite early in the day (along with the others I heard during the search). Whew! Pretty sure I hadn't heard this before. Tracked it down within an hour. Definitely not a repeat!

I can't remember the year, maybe 2011?, when they used to do a small daily prize and a large weekly prize. I won the Warner Bros. Studio Albums Five LP Box Set. Took a couple back and forth e-mails to get it shipped.

this is just the most wonderful song, thanks again dead.net for this November treat every year, very much appreciated. I always end up buying lots more GD stuff in November lol

This is a special show for a friend of mine as he was born on this day. Another big crushing set and possibly underrated. My friend and I both play along with thousands of DEADHEADS each day. When each day comes to a close, we talk and compare our search history. Another reason why THE GRATEFUL DEAD is a must listen, the whole community from top brass to the youngest fan can put a smile on anyone's face. This is our way of staying in touch with each other. The birthday thing between us, as times GD played on our BD's just 4 on mine and 7 on his. I can't wait for his call tonight.
PEACE & LOVE

Is anyone getting this on Day 4 for Dark Star? Day 1 was changed from MP3 to WAV, but Day 2 & 3 are still MP3. I wish you'd stay with one format - the quality control this year is awful.

Not being able to edit the metadata for the .wav file probably comes down to what program you are using for music playback. iTunes used to not be able to edit .wav metadata, but I believe they have changed that. Are you using Windows Media Player? I would suggest trying a different program. MediaMonkey is by far my favorite choice, since it handles basically every file format and allows full customization.

Some claim that Dark Star is actually going on all the time, and the band simply steps in and out of it…
I have always loved this quote/idea if for no other reason than music itself is bigger than man made concepts, at least to me.
This is a deep cut fer sure, begin at the beginning and have fun.

So I am getting WAV lossless files now for 2,3,4. Hope day 1 upgrades to WAV soon. That would be fantastic! You will be able to change/edit all data to clean it up, but if you are using iTunes to do it, you will not be able to add the artwork. iTunes doesn't really like WAV files. But use something like JRiver which is fantastic, and you will be able to edit everything. Or even convert the files then to FLAC, ALAC, MP3 whatever you need for your use.

Thank you for listening to the format comments. VLC will easily convert .wav to .mp3.

The year in question was evident right at the go. Look for BIG PHIL THUNDER in the first minute was my guiding sound. Wow they take this for a ride. Found another Dark Star that I remember loving on the ol cassettes from a show that occurred a little while before this one. Enjoy!
p.s. MP3 Tag is a good program for changing metadata. And dbPoweramp is a pretty good one for converting audio codec file types.

now I found the entry calendar, only to realize you gotta scroll backwards for 10 minutes to enter a simple date. Something else..... oh look. prove you're STILL not a robot.

I recall some years ago many tunes were easiest pinned down by the feedback, felt like I was hearing this one again. In any case, that helped me pin it down and now I'm on to the show. Then a day full of Dark Stars since those are my favorite,

My guess for todays dark star is

Filmore west, SF, CA
3-1-69

That electric piano sound makes me think late 60’s and that almost “thunder stick” maraca sound and the feedback is really unique. Hoping I got close :)

Sounds like a great title for a book. It also describes accurately my activities this fine morning. But ears and brain don't always play well together. Brain and ears agreed on the year of this performance, not so much on the venue. But after knocking my noisy brain off it's lofty perch, a few clicks here and a few clicks there, there she was. What an adeventure! It's audioade for my soul and I'm taking a big swig. I propose a toast to all the deadicated tapers who make these sonic adventures possible.

What a grate way to start the day with such a monster Dark Star. Yesterday was a deep rabbit hole, but I finally nailed it in the evening after listening to just about all of the dead air after all the BTWs, and remembering Dave's propensity to repeat occasionally. Greetings to all my fellow travelers. Always great to hang with all of you for a few weeks and listen to the music play!

With 285 Dark Stars listed on JerryBase I wondered if I would be there all day. I had an idea of the era. But the time of the track helped a lot.

Shall we go listen to a few versions of Dark Star, you and I while we can?
I think I finally got this one. Not an entirely easy hunt.
Good luck all.

For all the familiars (cause it's been a year and we forget:) and the newbies, just a reminder that I maintain a Google Sheets tracker for the last 15 years of 30Days. It's another good tool to help narrow the searches (sometimes) and let's one organize the history by song, year in 30days, and date performed. Just send me a message and I'll pass along the link.

I don't know which is better, sychronizing perfectly the archive show with the 30 days show, or having them be a split second off. For Dark Star, it almost doesn't make a difference!

I often notice that when I rip some music to Apple Music in the iMac hard drive, and then, when finished, add a jpg. ("add artwork"), the volume suddenly drops. Is that because I've just made a greater demand on the computer to extract info from those files? It doesn't seem to diminish the audio quality but I do have to turn it up a few notches to get back to that pre-jpg volume. Any clues? Peace!

Digging for this one lead to some really fun shows and getting side tracked listening to Bobby's Slewfoot renditions! Wish they kept it in the repertoire. November Rocks.

What a lovely present to wake up to this morning. I may have been in the ball park, but I got lost in left field, picking dandelions, until I recalled a story about this show, and then I went crossed-eyed and struck gold. Lucky like a blind squirrel some days.
