Dave's Picks Vol. 52: The Downs at Santa Fe, Santa Fe, NM (9/11/83)
I remember the venue almost like and old fort with roses everywhere. We came to the site and Wavy Gravy showed us where to camp. Ken Kesey was here as well as a couple other big figures of the counterculture. I think because of Mickey's 40th. During drums a double rainbow appeared. Every time it looked like rain the band would stop and then come back even stronger from their breaks. I saw more outdoor shows in 83 than all the years combined. I have goose bumps even typing this from the memories. - xxuncle johnxx, Dead.net
One of the best memories I have were these 2 shows. During the break there was a lightning storm behind the stage, followed by a rainbow and then an awesome 2nd set. Morning Dew with a Cold Rain, Phil singing encore. Most of my tour buddies went home after Red Rocks and I tortured them with the Santa Fe tapes. Nothing beats the magic of a great GD outdoor show. "It all bleeds into one." - grateful hawaiian, Dead.net
In between sets, I remember it rained... and early on in the second set, there was an amazing rainbow directly over the stage behind the band. I don't believe they saw it, but I'm sure they heard about it. "Let It Grow" was awesome! - Johnny_A, Dead.net
The pot at the end of this rainbow is mighty fine, indeed. Our final Dave's Picks release for 2024 features the complete unreleased show from The Downs at Santa Fe, Sante Fe, NM, 9/11/83 (fun fact, it was Mickey's 40th birthday) with just a squidge of 9/10/83 to round things out. A true trader's treat, this one is solid all around from the lively first set featuring soon-to-be minted 80s classics like "Hell In A Bucket" and "West L.A. Fadeaway" to the return of "Help>Slip>Franklin's," the incredible 2nd set surprise of "Let It Grow," and adventurous takes on "He's Gone,""Wang Dang Doodle," and "Morning Dew." It's all well played, my friend, well played.
Limited to 25,000 numbered copies, DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 52: SANTA FE, NM 9/11/83 was recorded by Dan Healy and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering.
Lincoln said it best....
...."Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt."
Smart dude that Abraham.
A Veterans Day thank you
To all those men and women braver than me
A special salute to those who died or got wrecked in WWII fighting fascism
I for one certainly haven't forgotten you
It's right here....
....don't lose focus.
Some may try.
Like Obi-Wan said, we have the higher ground.
Tis but a ripple in still waters.
Fear not Ron dont call me Bob Marley1
Daves 52 will get my full attention after Boris
52 Still on Deck
I actually haven’t even listened to Santa Fe yet. Still making my way through the Devils box set.
Marley!!....
....throw 9.11 in between the 78's.
Mix em up.
The juxtaposition is worth it.
You really should....
....throw that bad boy in.
Vegas is....interesting. And always changing.
Dipping into Not For Kids Only.
When First Upon This Country ftw.
Yup.
P.S.
Speaking of Abraham...
Anybody here seen my old friend Bobby?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
I thought I saw him walkin' up over the hill
With Abraham, Martin, and his brother John. 🎶
What's Bobby's son up to these days? 🤔
With a legacy of fighting for freedom like that, you might want to get on board.
Thanks Daverock!
Our political leanings might be different, but we do share a love of music.
Since you (or someone) asked if I had anything to say about the music, I still like the HCS from DP1 probably the best, though the one from DaP5 is a close second, sometimes first depending on mood.
Cheers.
Thanks Charlie!
You're absolutely right about the way people can be put off by the political echo chamber here. It turned me off many years ago. Out of curiosity I came back to see what was going on with the releases and that was the first thing I saw. I should have known since it was so close after the elections. No worries though, I'll be gone again soon enough.
6/10/73
I was ecstatic when I saw this legendary show was finally released. One of my favorite Eyes, a very Allman Brothers jam in the Not Fade Away, and everything else in between.
What was the forum for this show again? Oh, that's right. RFK stadium. I wonder what RFK's son is up to these days.
Whatever it is, with a legacy like that you can be sure he just wants to help the people be free.
My nephew's wife just gave birth
A very welcome and timely event
Yes indeed
Though I suppose passing a kidney stone can be almost as painful. But much less rewarding or life affirming.
Speaking of HCS
Such a grate tune. I always thought it a tragedy that they dropped it from the repertoire after '74.
Personally, I blame Spacebrother for this.
Just kidding, Spacebro!
Facts and Lies
There have been lots of lies pushed by both sides over the years, and lots of assertions accepted as fact that turned out to be wrong. The idea that once you declare something to be a fact or not is the end of the story is a faulty assumption. If you want to convince someone that their position is wrong, the way to do that is through persuasive communication, not shutting down the communication and declaring the person a modern-day heretic and refusing to allow them to make their argument. Ironically, it is the much-referenced fascism that is characterized by the suppression of the opposition and their arguments.
As soon as I saw Here Comes Sunshine's posts and the start date for the profile, I suspected it was more likely to be a former poster or long-term lurker that decided to post, as I'm not really sure how widespread knowledge of this site actually is outside of deadheads. It looks like at least one of Here Comes Sunshine's posts to be confirmation of that assumption based on the poster's description that he or she used to post here.
ItsBurnsy, glad to hear you are the tolerant sort, but that has not been universal on this site.
I take no offense from those with differing views as my views don't fit neatly into a box, so I am equally likely to irritate those on the right on some issues and those on the left on others. I can confidently say that have yet to find the person with whom I agree on everything. And that's ok. I generally try to treat everyone that I encounter with kindness and respect, until that person demonstrates that my kindness is misplaced. I can't help but give money to the beggars I see from time to time (there but for the grace of god go I and all that). If I see someone in need, I generally stop and help. But I cannot abide being told how to think or what arguments I am allowed to make, or that I owe something to someone that I don't even know because of events that occurred before I was even born. I have no problem with someone who argues a contrary point, just a problem with being told to shut up by folks who have already made their argument. So as far as the "are you kind" issue, I have found that political affiliation is a poor predictor of such things.
Last Few
Khruangbin - Con Todo El Mundo
STRFKR - Parallel Realms
Gary Numan - The Pleasure Principle (Here in my car, I feel safest of all, I can lock all my doors ...)
Sturgill Simpson as Johnny Blue Skies - Passage du Desire
Ghost Funk Orchestra - An Ode To Escapism
The Alan Parsons Project - The Turn of a Friendly Card
Heartless Bastards - Arrow (Only For You alone is worth the price of the album)
As far as DaP52, this is currently my favorite 1980's release to date, for now anyway.
Legacies....
....whomp, whomp.
Being a Kennedy does not make one worthy. Unless it's in name only.
Cool I guess.
I'm guessing being a Trump will eventually have the same accolades to some. For all the wrong reasons.
Cool I guess.
My parents raised me to turn the other cheek when it comes to people like our future president when it comes to life in general.
And I guess I'm going to have to turn it yet again.
Not a good person. No redeeming qualities when you break it down to the basics.
However, it seems even the basics are lost.
Example A joined yesterday.
And is wasting time here.
Hilarious.
Very True, Charlie3
Censorship is the name of the game in these times, and it's especially effective when it is done clandestinely. Such as what happened to all the doctors who questioned the mainstream covid narrative on Twitter and Facebook.
They were silenced, their posts and accounts removed, and your average SM user was none the wiser it was even happening. One such doctor/scientist was a former VP from Pfizer. He was banned from Twitter. He was just one of many.
So when I see someone here complaining about how Elon Musk's X platform is a vehicle for "fascism" because he allows freedom of speech on his platform, I have to laugh. But it also makes me sad that people are so brainwashed that they now think freedom of speech is a bad thing.
I come from a Liberal family. Capital 'L.' Freedom of speech was a Liberal virtue when I was growing up, along with freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, etc. Now the so-called "liberals" want any speech they disagree with shut down.
They are not liberals any longer, they are Communists, and they have sent their Red Guards into the streets to silence any opposing views through any means necessary, including violence. That's what Antifa and BLM are all about. And the media, the colleges, and the entertainment industry are all on board with it.
But the everyday people see it and have had enough, and have voted accordingly. And here we are...
Here Comes Sunshine
Didn't they bring that one back in the 1990's? Well, I know they did - I've got an ancient bootleg here from 8/21/93, where they open the show with it. Or at least this cd. Maybe better forgotten at that. Great in 1973 though.
Yes, The Trump Name
Will hold the same reverance someday, Vguy. You just can't see it yet. Because you can only believe your TV and the talking heads. It's a very sophisticated psychological operation built upon many years of programming. You might be able to escape it if you turned your TV off. But it's a drug, and you're deep in addiction.
Someday you will hang your head in shame for the media lies you believed and defended.
Mark my words.
They indeed brought HCS back....
....i was going to say the same.
Fact Checking shit.
I seriously doubt it....
....I'll leave the worshipping to others. There appears to be surplus.
That being said, thank you for reinforcing what I already knew.
But Vguy
When that day comes, don't beat yourself up too bad. You are certainly not alone in your delusions. It's a very powerful propaganda network that has you programmed. If you turn your TV off you could get ahead of it. Most people can't do that though. It's like a drug.
The clouds of delusion
Very thick
No sunshine coming through
Lemmy said it best:
"No sun
Just clouds and poison rain"
I am very familiar with people like this....
....and attempting to move my needle peddling falsehoods will always end up being a waste of one's time.
I find it hilarious.
Can't wait for the next "gotcha".
Don't believe me, Vguy?
Then try turning your TV off for one week. I bet you can't do it.
You might be able to get through the day tomorrow, but I bet by the evening you'll turn it on.
And even if you do get through the night, the very next day you'll be like, "See, I got through the night without it, so tonight I get to watch it again!"
It's like a drug, Vguy. You can't live without it. And it tells you how to think, how to feel, and what to beieve. It IS your reality. Simple as that. It controls you.
Prove me wrong and turn it off for a week. Listen to music instead. Go for walks. Ride a bike. Read a book. But don't turn the TV on for a full week.
But when you can't, remember what I said. And when you inevitably turn it back on, notice how it is shaping your opinions.
Hi Bluecrow!
I'm guessing you're a big TV watcher and the mere thought of going a week without it is what set you off, lol.
This is good stuff....
....random slams from the top rope.
Do it again.
55th anniversary....
....of Sesame Street.
Stupid TV.
BTW. A screen is still a TV, but more channels genius.
You are looking at a screen, correct?
Really Vguy?
So I'm watching TV here on this DaV52 thread?
Dude, you are rely grasping at straws now, lol.
Are you going to do the no TV challenge or not? Commit, one way or the other so we know.
Can you do it, Vguy?
When it all comes down to it....
....calling everyone here liars takes pretty small balls. No matter how you interpret it.
Marye. It might be time to flip a switch.
There is nothing I need to prove to anyone. Especially this troll.
Called it the second I saw it.
"taps head"
