Days Of Dead

Iko Iko>The Other One>Black Peter
Hint:
An unusual trio of songs, as were so many of the Dead's live performance sequences

Iko Iko had debuted in May 1977, and appeared occasionally after that. This placement coming out of a brief Space segues into a long Other One before falling into a powerful Black Peter

    Yet another...

Got some errands to run, but took a quick listen to some other tracks from this show. This is another one that I'll revisit.

    Hey Now

David is serving up the trios to make our listening last longer and our searches take less time.
The bus came by and I got on back in 1984.
Been so grateful for this band ever since.
Will be interesting to see here how everything will lead up to the next 13 Days.

    Another Gem

Think we cracked this one, first thing this morning. And have then had a very relaxed time listening to the whole concert.

This is about the time I got on The Bus. I remember doing concrete work and this hippie looking heavyset guy working with us. Every day he had his Sony Walkman on playing something, no-one knew who though? Till one day he lent me a listen. The jam was awesome and the first time I heard The Other One. At the end of the day, he walked up to me and asked if I knew who the band was (answering no) he told me The Grateful Dead. Then he asked if I had a tape deck, my response who doesn't so what's he do? Opens up the Walkman and hands me that tape, give it a full listen he says. A rewind to the beginning and The Race Is On, a song my parents listened to every weekend (country style). I knew every lyric and soon was convinced The Grateful Dead had become my new favorite band. The next day handing it back to him he asked what do you think? I remember saying they are so good I hope you don't mind that I recorded a copy for myself. (No clue here) That show was from 05-01-1970 Alfred State College, just south of my town. Then the following day he pulls into work with a dozen different complete shows, walks up to me and says have fun! I know He's Gone now, and God Rest His Soul because I know The Grateful Dead did.
R.I.P. my great friend Steve

thanks for sharing! you're the first person I've heard say they connected with The Race Is On as the song which sold them on the Dead :^))

This was a fun cassette tape back in the day. Overshadowed a bit by other tapes we listened to... but a good example of what they were doing right about then. I too went over and listened to most of the entire show after listening and solving today's three-fer. There is a nice matrix out there.

I got a late start this year, missing the first several days. Hats off to Dave and crew for picking some great selections this year. As others have mentioned, the three song arrangement has really cut down on my search time. I haven't even pulled out DeadBase yet! But the best part about the trio set up is that we are getting so much more music! This is awesome!

"Seems like I've been here before,
Fuzzy then and still so obscure, good-bye, good-bye, good-bye, good-bye.
And I don't want to see anybody cry,
Meet me some mornin' in the sweet by and by, by and by, by and by."-Born Crossed-Eyed
30 DoD released songs from today's show, as well as the day before, in past editions. Reminds me of my favorite clue in the comments ever, "Asian Girl Band", though don't remember who wrote it.

Didn’t need it today, but I’m having trouble with RELISTEN again! I checked with a buddy in Florida and one in Philadelphia and it’s not working for them either. Deleted the app on my phone and tried to re-install but that didn’t work. Couldn’t just be me and my buddy in Florida and another friend in Philly…

17 days in and Dave has almost hit 6 hours of free live Dead. Thank you Dave, Rhino and the Band for such generosity. The jams are long and beautiful this year. All eras being represented. Most of us have plenty pig and various covers in our library so I am always stoked for what they can give us for free. Damn how good is That 8/30 /69 St. Stephen>The Eleven>Drums>High time that marked my 12th Birthday! Always loved those Great Highway Shows!

it's crazy how every year he breaks the previous year's record of total running time. David is the nicest most generous guy out there. Probably the Canadian in him but no matter, he's great. However, I will say this: these multiple song offerings are a whole lot easier to find than single song offerings.

and a rocking Black Peter! That intense Jerry jamming at the end is enough to raise poor Peter up from his death bed and dance a jig right out the front door.

On a different topic, all the archive versions of Black Peter I listened to from this show have some serious sound degradation about 40 sec from the end. But the version David has offered us here today is as clean as the cleanest soundboard recording. Thanks!

And finally, just for fun, if you're into Dr. John, check out a May 1981 broadcast of the SCTV comedy show where he performs a pretty cool solo version of Iko Iko.

Loved the sound of yesterday's show with little twists in the sound that I don't recall hearing anywhere else. I was lucky today, relisten doesn't work for me. Is anyone else have that problem? It creates a whole different kind of hunt.

So happy for the calendar!! keeps me grinnin' from ear to ear. Mid-western Night Owl here: I usually search at the end of the night, so when 3 a.m. rolls around i look at the answer/winner before sleep and yesterday, twas I ! HOOT Hoot! Using my trusty Re-listen, (Deadbase is back on the western edge of the u.s.) i refuse to look at the comments till after i submit my answer. Too much, TMI there, especially this year. Today, i also experienced Re-listen as off-kilter, that's where ETREE came in for the rescue for Iko/OO/BP. That is one Revved up Iko! Thanks & Peace to Dave & Krewe! Always a Hoot!

1. Iko was only played from 77 on
2. Donna on backup vocals so you know it’s 77-early 79
3. Only 2 instances of this exact combo in said time period.
4. This is a SBD recording. Other only has AUD’s

Side note: The encore for this show was appropriate given the date.

Was at the show -- during Iko Iko Bobby, Jerry, and Donna did the hula. (No; really).

Equipment truck outside with a giant Allman Brothers mushroom scrawled out in the dust.

More than 100 degrees inside. GA show.

Sink ripped out of the wall in the bathroom. (More likely stupid fun rather than vandalism).

Hells Angels in force. No trouble, although after the show we were all stuck in traffic and they came through at high speed.

Look for the Scarlet/Fire from this show -- a gem..
