Brent's keys !
as i said about yesterday's quiz. ^
to maybe start a topic of conversation, does anybody else experience the music as texture ?
or any other synesthia ?
along with many other factors influencing how i hear the Dead especially, like seeing colors etc, is seeing Jer's guitar like a rose vining up a trellis of Bobby's chords, or Brent's B3 (and sometimes his voice) feels furry.
in some way, this helps me narrow down the different eras of the Dead's music for this game, because of the texture.
all the ways to *hear* the music !
Greetings from the UK
Been in from the start - a wonderful annual treat. Many thanks
(Appropriate today - we have snow here in North Wales for the first time this winter)
cutting out
playing cold rain keeps cutting out and back
is anyone else sharing this awful dilemma
Cold Rain & Dropouts
Yes, my Cold Rain also has a few dropouts....and getting worse as the song goes on
Phil's playing clued me in to the era immediately...
...before I ran my song lists checks with my sources. I can't say more without giving away too much info, but suffice to say that I was at this show, and so many around this time, that I recall dreaming I was at shows in my sleep. Drop outs are unfortunate, maybe they can be fixed, but even if they can't, there are other good sources out there. We were taping off our masters every morning after the shows, comparing different mic set-ups, getting all techno-geeky in the aural landscape.
Texture! … and Sportatorium Set 1
Today’s CR&S is so THICK with those chugging notes and chords laid down by Phil- you can feel his bass. Truly the only hint needed- if you listened to every version of that song you could pick today’s right out…
ON THE ROAD AGAIN and THE RACE IS ON were played in the same show (and set) 11 times- ten of these were acoustic sets. The 11/26/80 show was the only time both were played in an all-electric show. What a treat for those Floridians who didn’t get to a show opening with an acoustic set! Forty-four years after the fact and I still regret not getting to Radio City for one of those shows…
Easy again... good bass & keys today
Another easy one today. Like the sound of Phil up front at the beginning of Cold Rain... Started out with same cut as on the source I found for today.
I thought yesterday was easy. Even the "hint" which I usually ignore did give the first year to try right away. I thought I would 'zero in' rather than take that so called hint as a call to search a full 15 year span. As soon as I heard the guitar, lead vocals and keyboard sound/tones I thought, Hmmm that sounds an awful lot like the 1980-81 sound and it does state "second half of career etc". I will just try looking at 1980 first. Sometimes simplifying helps. Bingo, answer popped up right away.
Still stunned
Can't believe I missed yesterday's while I was in the right year. I guess too many distractions at home but I did get back on track today. I would have caught this entire run in a venue I just love!
re: Cut outs
When you find the SBD for this show on the Internet Archive, it does not have the cutouts.
She been trouble all my life...
I hear that Jer.
Interesting open to Esau.
This entire show is well above ave, to my ears.
Be Well You All
I'm going where those chilly winds don't blow…
David has been serving these trios on a platter for us.
Shouldn’t have to spend much time wandering the land looking for this grouping.
This space is getting hot with all these multiple offerings.
I’m just fine if we continue to be treated this old way for the next 11 Days…
Too much cold rain and snow.......
or maybe it was those chilly winds that fouled up this first track download. Well played nonetheless. Esau is one of my favorite Bobby tunes. Althea is perfect. Phil's bass is extra strong and audible at this show.
Fun fact: There's something special in Grateful Dead concert history beginning the day before this show was recorded. However, I won't go into that now as I don't want to be a guess spoiler.
Edit: The jamming pre-drums is definitely worth a listen(I hope that's not too revealing for those still searching).
Grateful Dead concert history
I never knew about that tidbit in GD history that started the day before today's show. I guess I always assumed that had been a thing for several years prior. Big props to all the folks that paved the way for that to happen!
Go to Nassau
I have kind of a random question somewhat related to yesterday’s selection. One of my first exposures to the Dead was the Go to Nassau live album from May 15/16, 1980. To me it sounds just exactly perfect. So I’ve always loved the 1980 sound. Does anyone know if it was heavily overdubbed in the studio? Or were the boys just that on those nights??
No overdubs
I'm going with no on the overdub. I remember hearing tracks from the Nassau shows on the King Biscuit Flour Hour that didn't make the CD.
No overdubs
That’s what I suspected but never known for sure…thanks ladnarc
Go to Nassau
Released in 2002. No overdubs. And no overdubs in any of their archival releases.
Why do they insist on calling it a hint?
It's a description not a hint
A hint would be east coast venue or late 70s
Hint my chilly asp

The Hunt is always fun but the real payout is to get a much higher quality listen once your find the show in question.
