China Cat Sunflower and I Know You Rider were joined together in September 1969, and from their first time together it sounded like a natural fit. As the years went on, the Dead developed an intricate, composed jam to join the two, as heard here

    the first 20 seconds

I listen to the whole cut once or twice to zero in on the year, but it's the details in the first 20 seconds that I use to compare the archive versions to the 30days version. this one I kept stumbling into commercial releases, so I had to glance at my shelf to make sure I wasn't wasting time listening to a for-sure no go. I keep my cds in chronological order, so the dicks and daves and road trips and other archival releases are all comingled. It looks sloppy, but I like the chronological order. How do y'all store yours?

    Storing

I ran out of space it is embarassing how much i have. Dicks Picks in order of release on shelf. 73 Box nearby. Couple of favorites also handy from Daves Picks. Nothing really in chronological order other than 30 trips and Road Trips. Warlocks woodbox also handy. Then tons of Jerry Garcia band also always at hand. Other stuff in crates I rotate every few years. Need to stop buying more eventually. Have lots of unopened Dave Picks especially. Will finally get to Beacon Box Set on Thamksgiving. Stopped ripping stuff long ago.

    Almost missed it

The tonality was so different on the source on Archives I passed it by the first time but circled back around and made it through the piano part and I went, ding.

For those of us who like to burn mp3's to CD's to play in the car, it's becoming abundantly clear that this year's collection isn't going to fit on two CD's, no matter how you slice and dice (not complainin' just sayin').

Great tip pholkiephred, thanks!! And actually, that's exactly what I've been doing each year (and then I make it into a little easy Christmas gift for the missus, who has been on the bus longer than me). At the rate we're going this year though, 30 days will total ~1422 MB total. And the tracks usually get longer toward the end, not shorter. Again, this is a happy problem! Hmm, I have a few "extra capacity" CD-R's lying around somewhere, that can store 800 MB, I think. Might work, but not sure they'd play on all CD players (or any at all).

Dave tossed it at us today.... We've been waiting for this for some time, I like the long search though, I freakin' nailed it quickly Thinking I would need a headlight on that north bound train..... Not today. This time period had some very intriguing setlist.

my dear Mom loves to tell the story of when she saw the Beatles as a teenager at this venue with 30,000 other crazy kids. Everyone here has probably passed it as you crisscrossed America on tours over the years.

not a repeat as far as I can tell

Some of you may remember Jonathan Wind Dancer from Early Dead Shows/Tour?He is not with us anymore, but it is his Birthday today, and there are NO coincidence that "China Cat" was one of the songs today,as it was his favorite song! When I lay in bed this morning,I said to myself,"What song will they play for Wind Dancer today"?And THIS?.....Thank You Spirits/Dave/Grateful Dead.for saving my brother, after he got back from Vietnam, and had No Family! You saved him.....
He was the quintessential Homeless Dead Head, who would,on an instant.up and go hitchhike to ANY show in the US...and make it there by show time!!!Thank You for your Life Wind Dancer! We LOVE you!!!We Miss You!!!!

wow
just a few to look thru

for 47 years, 18 touring, this has always been my most favorite of all.
i could and probably will listen to them all day.
one of the comments and the easy time period helped a lot….got it down to a list of manageable proportions.
i usually never find these, but today i am determined to succeed.
good luck to all.

At over 500 shows with a China Rider, even with era clues limiting the stack you should scour, I have too much to do today. Good luck to all - and whomever of you fine people successfully find the show, you have my lifetime of respect.

Winner here should be receiving the box set in my opinion....

So many versions to sift through. Have it narrowed down to 2 years but so many versions (minus 1 distinct version) it could be. No vocal flubs as clues either.

What a grate way to start the day. All those years of research and timings led me straight to this magnificent show. Going to sit back and listen to the whole thang! Thanks, Dave!

Found it. Didn't take *that* long, lol. I am quite intrigued by those two or three versions that I listened to this morning that feel like they are being played on warp speed. They don't seem to coincide with any particular runs -- just pop up randomly. But man, they are flying through these songs. Enhancement? ;)

I was fairly proud when I walked into this jingle.
Took me quite a bit of searching and listening, but I could not take my rest until I nailed it.
Now I get to ring that silent bell having finally found it.
Guessing many may bow out on this test.
David goes from putting the ball on a tee for us, to throwing a curve ball that goes in all sorts of directions.
I'm going to miss these 30 Days when they're gone.

The sound from this particular tour is unmistakable IMO. These are by far my favorite shows to listen to. There's about a 3-4 month stretch where I feel like there wasn't a single clunker! Just magic from start to finish, with unreal second set jam suites.

This is a perfect example of why I love this year so much. Fairly quick search - setlist is standard for the era, but another great show.

Right there with you Mudlovebuddy!

got timing, speed, musicians
but no sync yet
looking for billy’s snare at china intro and of course dynamic keys for jerry’s train, hope that doesn’t give too much away, it’s not helping me yet.

Phil Bombs and Beautiful Harmonies on Rider. This one took me a bit, even though I knew the specific era. Found some gems along the way, that's fer sure. Be Well Ya'll

I so didn’t want to give up- felt that after a couple of softballs I would buckle down and get ‘er done…

Finally got it- had the right era but there are a lot of CHINA/RIDER’s to get through in an any chosen time frame. A hint dropped earlier was correct, but really didn’t make the search any easier- if you chose that path it would have involved a completely different search, anyway.

Amazing that the outro to every RIDER is so different from every other- at least in this era…

Knew I had it within about a year from sound. Went around randomly, took a break, came back and started going one by one though a year and got there. Very first notes of the song by Keith helped. Even got it to synch. I'm guessing I tried at least 20-30. Sweet!
Cheers

I started at one year then thought hmmm close but it's all about that 1st guitar solo after the 1st verse. The approach... so I went with another year and found it after a few choices. Love that swingin' Billy K! And it's always great to hear something with twin lead guitars trading off and harmonizing. That one guy can really play some lead guitar when he puts his mind to is.

I think this is the hardest one of the year so far.

Probably took a few hours total as I've been searching off-and-on all day.

Hope it's not giving too much away to reveal that my approach was basically to listen to Bill at the beginning. Fun journey though, great era for sure!

As there's obviously a whole lot of China/Riders out there. Awareness of time signatures will also help. These two well played standards make me very much appreciate the remastering/cleanup efforts of the behind the scenes wizards who offer it up to us. Well done and BIG THANKS!

Fun fact regarding yesterday's show from 8/13/87: It was the first and only time ever of a Big Boss Man show opener for the Grateful Dead(the word according to Deadbase 50 that is).

Deadbase may be wrong on that only time BBM opener. My search shows that they opened 5 times with BBM ;
1966-07-17 [Sun], 1987-08-13 [Thu] , 1987-08-20 [Thu], 1987-11-06 [Fri] , 1988-04-09.
Today's China -Rider comes from my favorite era for those songs, great search, beautiful jam.

I was going to not even hunt (overwhelmed), but knew the era and got lost noodling around. And there it was. An enjoyable ride listening to a lot of my faves. Song lengths and era were the key, and intro helps!

Who is singing, who isn't, how does JG voice sound, how tight is the fingering, gives you a year range, but then it's grunt work. Amazing how the lead-ins change in 3 months. In the end the first 20 seconds is all you need....

It's cool how several of us are focusing in on different parts of the song, but because each band member varied they're playing every night, no single part of the song ever really repeats itself as you go through different versions. At the same time, there were certain licks in the part I was listening to that were very similar across the era. Truly amazing how they could mix it up like that show to show! Good to have a tough one every once in a while...thanks for the challenge DL!

It took me 22 versions to find the answer. If this is work, I've never worked a day in my life. Play Dead, indeed.
