    September 24 - September 30, 2007
This is another busy week in the Grateful Dead’s performing history, with music spanning another relatively short span, but containing some exceptional jams.

From the second Waterbury, CT show, on 9/24/72, we have the heart of the second set, which features Dark Star>China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider. Unfortunately, the Rider gets chopped at the very end due to a cut in the master reel. But fortunately, the Dark Star contains just about everything you want from a 1972 Dark Star: introspection, deep space, melodic turns and chaos.

Four years later, on their second big tour after the hiatus, in September-October, 1976, we have a great second set sequence from 9/24/76 at William and Mary College, featuring Drums>Slipknot!>Franklin’s Tower>The Music Never Stopped>Stella Blue>Around and Around, U.S. Blues. There’s a tape reel cut in Stella Blue, but to balance that flaw out is this absolutely incredible double speed Slipknot! that leaves the listener breathless.

In 1981, the band did a short three night tour before embarking on the fall tour of Europe. We have a little taste of each of these three American shows, with a couple of tracks from the first show on 9/25/81 at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA: from the first set, a rocking Passenger, and the second set opening combination of Might As Well>Samson and Delilah. From the next night, on 9/26/81, at The Aud in Buffalo (or, more properly, the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium, if you’re not into the whole brevity thing), we are pleased to play the post-Drums sequence of Jam>Not Fade Away>Morning Dew>Playing In The Band>One More Saturday Night. And finally, from the third show on the mini-tour, on 9/27/81 at the Capital Center in Landover, MD, we have the show opening trio of Jack Straw, Alabama Getaway>Promised Land.

That’s about it for this week, but check back next week when we’ll venture into October with more great music. Feel free to write with questions, comments or requests. Your input is always appreciated.

It's nice to see that 12 years after the end of the "Grateful Dead" there are still a bunch of whining, self-centered wimps still alive that we all love to hate. Posting messages bashing David Lemieux -- you're a self-centered piece of selfish crap. If you don't like it, why are you here? Screw. . Oh, ...let me guess -- you got into the band after 1986, didn't you? Don't answer -- you self-centered wimps know nothing about giving without asking for anything in return. David -- keep doin' what you're doin' Those who understand gratitude are deeply grateful for these gems placed upon our heads each week.

On a positive note, I really like that David's put up longer song sequences this week (something that I believe people encouraged last week). It's nice to be able to click on a sequence and enjoy 20-30 minutes of music, instead of having isolated songs and keep coming back to listen to the next one. Thanks, David! an asshole cause I got into the dead in 1987 thereby missing the deadline. Screw you---your generation gave us GW...thanks alot. Yes I was one of the a-holes that screwed up the scene by living in my car, vending and showing up without tickets, also known as the faithful. Im over folks complaining about how hard the music is to get now and and how Rhino sucks. My only complaint to Rhino now is that someone should MODERATE this thread so we can get back to business. U have the whiners...and the guys like the Pilgrim that has to talk about how much better things were in the "old " days. Cant we just discuss the music on this thread? Thanks for the 81 stuff. Got into the Dead in 87/88, so guess am an asshole too. Late Grateful Dead fans assholes unite! Due to a fluke of fate, our somewhat later birth,or later discovery of the band for whatever reason; we are not worthy, or what?? Though haven't been whining (in THIS thread anyhow) so am perhaps only half an asshole??? Am also guilty of talking about whatever else pops up in this thread, so...(oops sorry N.B. actually, i didn't become a serious deadhead, or perhaps dead music collector, until after jerry's death. the concert scene really turned me off - the kids who were more into drugs than the music, especially. i'll never forget 2 teens in front of me worrying about their pot while i was trying to enjoy a most beautiful version of 'knocking on heaven's door' in '91. my true appreciation came quite late. so don't smack us down. i would imagine that most of the folks who found the dead post jerry's coma were going through a phase, moved on, and only the (strange) deadicated remain. i would also imagine that it is mainly the younger fans who are continuing to support the band by coming to this website, trying to enjoy the music (without unnecessary insult,) and buying product. and from what i see, any posts attacking lemieux are few and far between. and if the poster of the previous post slagging dead latecomers is representative of an earlier generation (and I don't think he is), i wouldn't want to associate with them. i don't need the criticism, negativity, or all-around poopiness they emit. btw, 'stella' is great. but do we need 'playing in the band' for the millionth time? i don't mind the song, but it seems that there must be a ton of other tunes to choose from. and, for the third time, what's with the strange gap at the beginning of 'dark star'?

We all have one thing in common. We all love the music of the Dead. It dosn't matter if you discovered them in 1970 (as I did) or in 2007. Their music is something special, as are most of their fans. Just try to enjoy what we have here, because it too is very special. It is also free. To me the Dead have always represented freedom, and the love of your fellow man. Let's just keep the spirit of the Grateful Dead alive, and eliminate the negative vibes. Dave, keep up the great work!! It is appreciated by the majority. Peace :)

One of my all time favs along with Stella Blue of course. In 81, at the ripe old age of 17, I was seeing them as often as possible. It doesn't matter to me what year you got into the Dead, cause if your still diggin them now you must have got it. I recall an older post where someone refered to the mid-80's newbies as "Touch Heads". That was pretty funny but I can't see putting anyone down because they came aboard later than others. In the famous words of Rodney King, "can't we all just get along" (at least I think those were his words??!!, duh) Yeah, streaming is still a pain in the ass and limits your listening environment, but i'm still diggin what I can get for now.

The Dark Stars do not get better than this one. Maybe as good- not better though IMO. BTW the WWII documentary currently airing on PBS focuses on four cities in the US during that time. Waterbury is one of them and great shots of the outside of the Palace Theatre from that era have been featured. It was the main movie house and is where townspeople gathered to see newsreels of what was going on overseas, etc. Boy if those walls could talk.

What a chump! "there are still a bunch of whining, self-centered wimps still alive that we all love to hate" Who is "we" Pilgrim Shadow?? Is it all of the lucky people born early enough to get into the Dead before 1986? How many of you are there?...do you have a club of Deadheads hating other Deadheads? How many shows do you have to have seen, prior to '86 of course, to be in your little club of properly qualified Snobheads? And who else do you love to hate? You may have been at the station on time, but you missed the bus Pilgrim. ~The Doctor

My first show was 12/31/80, which is just about the midpoint. And believe me, even then there were people with a superior attitude for having gotten on the bus earlier. Not to mention untold hordes who had gotten OFF the bus already. There were also lots of kind souls ready to welcome newbies. Saw some of 'em at Phil the other day. It's always seemed to me, having gotten the whammy during Ripple at the end of the acoustic set (not that I knew what the song was called, but the last line seared its way into my DNA), that if you're a Deadhead, you know it from the core of your being and you sure don't need the validation of somebody with too much attitude. If you think you are, you are.

OK, I screwed-up.. BIG TIME. Not the first time; definitely won't be the last time. Just a lot of left-over animosity from seeing so much, in my eyes, "ungratitude." I could be right and I may be wrong; I don't know. The post-'86 reference was a result of the a bunch of trouble that I saw go down first-hand ...stuff I never would have believed (i.e., counterfeit tickets being produced by those who you would least expect, the disrespect towards the norms of society --- prompting Hunter to write a 'Letter to Deadheads" in 1988(?) asking people to please respect each city and to not show up without a ticket in hand.) I had no intention of upsetting so many people. Really. Whatever crumbs fall from the table are enough for me --- in whatever format and regardless of whether I can download them or not. One way or another, the music still fills the air. I sincerely apologize to anyone I offended. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me, however I understand human condition sometimes needs time for such a request to be fulfilled. ThePilgrimShadow

I recall getting on the bus in '74 and having some people telling me I missed the whole trip because I never saw Pig. Well, I definitely missed Pig Pen creating that tornado and the Dead amping us up into the eye of that spectacle! BUT luckily I ran into tapes and even DVD's to help get me there. That summer I did get to catch the "wall of sound' and my first scarlet and china>rider and much else that I am thankful for during the next 21 years. My touring dropped off in the mid '80's when a lot of you got on and I was grateful that people were going to shows to keep the trip alive. I'd make a show that was geographically close, but with kids and $uch, I didn't get to travel much, until the boys got older. I got confused (justlistentothemusicplay) when there were conflicts/comparisons/competitions about the 'stratification' of deadheads. I didn't pay too much attention to what people said when they get into pontificating. What I do know is: when it is me shooting my mouth off, about something or other, a friend usually points it out to me. And then I realize that, when I get on my soapbox-on my high horse, I usually fall off. Welcome to the club, brother. Grouch Marx said "I'd never want to join a club who would have a person like me as a member". Mark Twain (or as Tigerlily notes Samuel Clemmons) said "It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble, it's what you know for sure, that ain't so." Lesson learned. Now if I could just remember that! Shit, I have to learn it again. again. again. again Take care.

all is forgiven. we all jam our feet in our mouths at some point. i know i have. it's a great learning experience that i've learned over and over and over and over and over and over and ... as for keith losing inspiration, i've never noticed that, but perhaps it had to do w/ his marital struggles at that time. donna has stated that they left the band in order to save their marriage. maybe his heart wasn't in it so much. or maybe it was drugs. i've never known a musician to perform well on any substance whatsoever. take the beatles: for all of their drug experimentation, ringo has said that if they ever went into the studio high on anything, when they listened to it after coming down, it was just "shit." just speculating, of course. monday is just 3 days away! i can't believe that i actually look forward to mondays now. thanks, lemieux, you've made that least favorite day into a most anticipated day.

I started dead tour in 89 when I was 17 and stayed on till the end in 95. I never asked antone for anything and always worked. Sometimes I was foolish about what I did and sometimes I just sold sandwiches or sodas. Either way I survived without being a freeloader and never once crashed a gate to get in. I lived out of my backpack for the first two years, and then managed to get a truck, which was my home. I take offense at being called a freeloader when what I learned from older deadheads at that point in my life was that to be strong was to be self sufficent. Thanks for the apology Pilgrim.

I've been reading posts with flagging interest over the last bunch of weeks. At times i get encouraged when I see us talking about the music again. As the more active posters here seem to have far more knowledge then I, perhaps you could offer an opinion. I started going to shows in 1973 and saw my last Jerry show at the last Mardi Gras show in Oakland. I have continued to go to "The Other Ones" and "The Dead". Why does the post Jerry music not even warrent a mention with this group of people? If you have seen them, you know that on any given night they beat any other live band on the road. Being at a good live show beats a great tape any day. I still smile and dance when I go to shows and look forward to new tour announcements.

interesting point. i don't know if there is a forum for post-Jerry dead, but, speaking strictly for myself, it isn't the Grateful Dead without jerry. know what i mean? however, perhaps suggesting a new forum topic to mayre or izzie is in order, unless that already exists. if you are speaking about why the post-jerry music isn't a part of the taper's section, it probably all has to do with licensing issues. and, actually, it might be kind of cool to include that music here. honestly, i haven't heard the "dead" nor "the other ones" because i was ambivalent about hearing the music without jerry's voice or guitar. a little exposure could ease my fears.

There are topics in this forum on all the members and there has been discussion in those areas. Bob has a web site with much discussion; too huge for me to get a grip on so I don't check in very much. Mickey and Phil also have Web sites. enjoying the ride - very sorry you have missed out on all the great music of the past 12 years. It may not be the Grateful Dead, but it as close as we can get. And IMHO - Ratdog, Phil and Friends, the Dead, the Other Ones have all been tighter than most of the post Brent stuff of the Grateful Dead and much of the 80's. Jerry had health problems and was an addict and the band was not inspired at times and not happy at times. Most of these post -Jerry bands have more joy in their spirit than the last days of the Dead. I love Jerry and the sound of his guitar and songs but you can not fly high when you are bogged down by narcotics and just feeling sick and dying. With all this said, there was nothing like a Grateful Dead concert; even though the post Jerry shows are lots of fun and smooth sailing, it isn't the same MAGIC and excitement as the Grateful Dead when they were on. The audience for me have also been more pleasant at the post Grateful Dead shows than in the later years. They are there because they love the music, not to make a scene. Let the discussion begin. . Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.) Walt Whitman-Song of Myself

Marye, No new topic needed. I'm not much of a poster and would hate to see this split made the official one on this site. Anyone who ignores post Jerry is missing good stuff. I used to just come here to listen to music and read the posts. David used to respond to my emails. I guess my point was that we stopped talking about the music and that is kinda sad. Have a great weekend, (Jorma playing in Phoenix at a little blues bar on Sunday.) "There are 2 kinds of people in the world. Those whose lives have a soundtrack and those lives do not.
