    September 24 - September 30, 2007
This is another busy week in the Grateful Dead’s performing history, with music spanning another relatively short span, but containing some exceptional jams.

From the second Waterbury, CT show, on 9/24/72, we have the heart of the second set, which features Dark Star>China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider. Unfortunately, the Rider gets chopped at the very end due to a cut in the master reel. But fortunately, the Dark Star contains just about everything you want from a 1972 Dark Star: introspection, deep space, melodic turns and chaos.

Four years later, on their second big tour after the hiatus, in September-October, 1976, we have a great second set sequence from 9/24/76 at William and Mary College, featuring Drums>Slipknot!>Franklin’s Tower>The Music Never Stopped>Stella Blue>Around and Around, U.S. Blues. There’s a tape reel cut in Stella Blue, but to balance that flaw out is this absolutely incredible double speed Slipknot! that leaves the listener breathless.

In 1981, the band did a short three night tour before embarking on the fall tour of Europe. We have a little taste of each of these three American shows, with a couple of tracks from the first show on 9/25/81 at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA: from the first set, a rocking Passenger, and the second set opening combination of Might As Well>Samson and Delilah. From the next night, on 9/26/81, at The Aud in Buffalo (or, more properly, the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium, if you’re not into the whole brevity thing), we are pleased to play the post-Drums sequence of Jam>Not Fade Away>Morning Dew>Playing In The Band>One More Saturday Night. And finally, from the third show on the mini-tour, on 9/27/81 at the Capital Center in Landover, MD, we have the show opening trio of Jack Straw, Alabama Getaway>Promised Land.

That’s about it for this week, but check back next week when we’ll venture into October with more great music. Feel free to write with questions, comments or requests. Your input is always appreciated.

Yet another chop of good music I'll probably never hear thanks to corporate. I don't have time to rip streams. For those with nothing better to do, the technology is easy and good on jah

    Nice Concept, Wrong Name
Why is this called the "Taper's Section" when one cannot "Tape" anything from it? Are the selections submitted by "Tapers"? Why not call it the "Streamer's Section"? This rings more true.

There are some great, lengthy Music Never Stoppeds out there. Try Dick's Picks 32 I think it is....also known as 8-7-82...nice Music-Sugaree-Music I believe....I have had that tape for many years.....also check out Boston Music Hall June 9,10,11, 22, 1976.....they played some interesting variations of Music Never Stopped all four nights in a row. There is also a great Music from Hershey Park I used to listen to....I will try to find the date. Also, the Music from Pembroke Pines, FL 1977 rips!

Thank you for putting this music up to listen to for free. I'm a long time dead head (almost 40 years), and I am so sick of the complaining dirtbags who want everything for free, A lot of work and artistry was put into making this incredible music available. I for one have been happy to trade in my old crappy tapes for the DP and vault releases. You can still get the penultimate show Cornell 77 for free if you have any sense at all. Unfortunately, most of the newer Dead fans have no sense. The broke, lazy bastards can all get lost.

Methinks you have have limited scope, or vision. A great show to be sure but I can think of a dozen or more that stack up very nicely against it. Just my 2 cents. Peace, Richard

I managed to d/l and burn a few things from the Taper's Section b4 they changed formats. I have 2 discs that I would be happy to burn for anyone who promises to stop trashing Dave and the work he does here. The discs I have are as follows;Disc 1: 1. From 2/24/73, Jam>Bass Solo>Jam>Sugar Magnolia - 17:32 2. From 2/23/74, He's Gone>Truckin'>The Other One>Eyes Of The World - 60:46(!!) Disc 2: 1. From 2/21/73, Mississippi Half-Step 8:22 2. From 6/10/73, Eyes>Stella Blue 30:07 3. From 12/01/73, Playin'>Uncle John's>Playin' 30:25 4. From 7/19/74, Scarlet Begonias 8:55 I didn't record the venue info on these bits, but it is not hard to find. The negativity from some here really blows. If live stuff is what you crave, there are MANY places to obtain it for little or no cost. To bitch about it solves nothing. PM me if interested, maybe I'll figure out how to answer a PM. You'll just have to send 2 blank CD-Rs and $$ to cover return postage. L8R

I'd have thought that the complaints would have subsided by now. Hey, the tapers section is probably scheduled to end by early November, so if you were downloading all along, you'd have most of it anyway. If you were not downloading it, then you can only blame yourselves. David Lemieux is a very nice guy, and should not be on the receiving end of the assaults. He, like any one of us who works for a large corporation, is limited by the powers to be as to what can be said. I think if it was up to him, he'd probably release for download (continue the download series) every full length, or near full length, show one year at a time until the whole vault was fully available, but of course he can't Greg SC

In izzie's view as moderator here, a personal attack is one that directly associates someone by name with some flung poo simply to be mean and hateful. That hasn't happened here, that I've seen, since a few folks were kindly shown the door a couples weeks ago. Having said that, it's always super when folks call other folks out on stuff and say, from the community, when something is not acceptable. When that task becomes too burdonsome on the few folks who've been doing that, then your moderators step in. It would be nice for the complaints to stop. I understand the need to vent and voice one's disappointment and all that, but I also think there comes a time...

tj crowley izzie some people just need to find something to target,,,it justifies the anger within (for whatever reason it's there)..too often 'we' tend not to accept responsibility for things that happen in our lives and need(?) to rationalize/justify why it's there and target someone/thing for it's presense..the old proverb..'when pointing a finger at soemone/thing..acknowledge also the three pointing back to self'.....good speakers can rally people around the flag of anger..

I thought we got rid of TJ Crowley a couple weeks ago when he said he was not coming on here anymore.....also, your point above eludes me.

What Izzie is saying is that if you direct a comment at her or the other moderators, they will censor you and kick you out. Everyone else seems to be fair game. They threw a guy out a few weeks ago for comments made about Izzie and others, even though some of the stuff he said was valid. Other people then called him some derogatory names and those comments were allowed to stand. Go back two weeks and check for yourself. Politricks...the goose and gander rule does not apply in Rhinoland.

As we've said on more than one occasion, this board's TOS make it quite clear that we can and will remove responses for any reason. That said, we err on the side of not removing them, to the occasional detriment of the local quality of life. Said TOS also require treating other members with respect, and we will boot those who do not do so. If there is a visible attack on an individual person not in this board's employ that you think should be removed, please call it to my attention in a PM and we will take it under advisement. Ranting about people who do X when they should do Y does not qualify as a personal attack, however tired we may be of hearing this or that variation on the theme.

Re:FlashbackOn September 17th, 2007 Oroboros said: The sentiment of this current flap reminds me of some of the rancor that various (and specific) persons subjected all of us to, on the 'old site'. Anger, testosterone, name-calling, and even threats, first veiled and then specific, were hurled about as if that might make some real difference when there are true differences of opinion. You will never be able to convince someone by use of an aggressive tirade. They MAY listen to you, IF you make your point in an articulate and respectful manner. And then they still could disagree and/or state that things are just the way they are. There can be more than one 'truth" on such issues. People can honestly hold opposite opinions, and genuinely see things very differently. Once upon a time persons out of control (by choice) decided to topple a fence and invade a Dead concert. The band didn't take that incident lightly, and indicated to all of us that they expected people to treat each other better, or they could take the show off the road. (See their letter published in GD Almanac Summer issue 1995.) Nobody is making you visit this site, if it incites you so. (Did that rhyme, or did I just sound like Dr. Seuss. Shit, my parenthood is showing). There are people that participated in that 'old site' that decided to not visit or contribute here. They did not and do not like the changes with this site. So they decided to go elsewhere. Fair enough. It just comes down to your truth. Are you convinced by someone holding another opinion that rails and spews venom at you? I bet not. For a while, back in the day, the Grateful Dead were touring often. Back in my day, they would even play 3 sets. Years later some changes were made. Not playing shows as often, and not playing as long a show, as I was used to. I could have decided to not go see them anymore because they weren't giving me all I wanted. I could have went to the show and complained long and loud to anyone and everyone that would then have to hear me (instead of the MUSIC). But I didn't, and I continued to see them for what they would and could share. And I continue to gratefully drink from that cup. There is a West African proverb "You see the Hut, yet you continue to ask 'Where shall I go for shelter?'" Take care.

is it true that the taper's section will end in november? If so that is sad news :( Anyhoo....its been a pleasure to have had the service available. I've learned a lot since i've been here! Hey ENJOYINGTHERIDE!!! tomorrows the day! you ready? Psyched? Play them as LOUD as possible when you get them! Anyone out there in deadland know of any morning (AM) dead shows besides the US festival in jamaica that took place in the early 80's? Saw a pic of micky hart barefoot in a stream playing a hand drum and surrounded by a huge drum circle...the quote said something like "pre-show warm up before a early morning show"......any clue which show this was?? TigerLilly....stay beautiful darling! :)

Let's see, Rhino released Cow Palace Dec/Jan 07, then 3 From the Vault in June 07, is it possible that they are on a 6 month schedule for releasing shows? Hey, could be? If the first two releases are any indication, watch this Dec for another release. Greg SC
