Europe '72: The Complete Recordings - All The Music Edition

    Europe '72:
    The Complete Recordings -
    All The Music Edition

Our Europe '72 boxed set is now officially sold out, with all 7,200 boxes now gone! We can't thank you enough for your support, for having faith in the project and taking the plunge to purchase this unprecedented release. Despite the fact that it's going to be a bit of a wait before it arrives on your door step, we are sure you'll be blown away with the results.

We are now offering the All-The-Music edition of Europe '72, which includes all of the music recorded on the tour, with each show in its own individual package, complete with its own liner notes by Dead scholars such as David Gans, Blair Jackson, Steve Silberman, Gary Lambert and others, as well as by attendees of some of the shows. You'll get 73 CDs and over 70 hours of prime Grateful Dead.

    IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC...

Because you dared dream this might happen one day… Because you went down to the Gypsy Woman and offered up your first-born to try to make it happen… Because there are enough passionate Dead Heads at Rhino/GD who thought it might be cool for this to happen… It’s happening! Coming in September is a gargantuan EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping and clearly cosmic 73 DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this enormous box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

    Dylan
Dylan doesn't "upgrade" any of his stuff. He releases new "Bootleg Series" recordings, but that's about it. There was one exception with a very overpriced limited edition of one of the Bootleg Series releases, which came with an additional CD. My one regret is that he doesn't release many live recordings, but his catalog is pretty stable. (I have all his recordings, bought from iTunes in the "Complete Dylan" set, then all subsequent releases.)

RE: The availability of addional boxes,
I know I had placed my order for the All Music Edition within a few days after the boxes were sold out, so the proximity does seem reasonable in my case. Also, I've seen a few postings on other forums by people who were being shipped more box sets than they intended to order (remember the confusion over the validity of some of the early orders). There's a hilarious thread on archive.org about the Europe '72 Distribution Center, for example! Hopefully this kind of thing accounts for most of the extra sets available, and everything is Kosher. Of course I haven't actually received it yet, so...

I talked to Dead.Net customer service this morning regarding order number DN795XXXX. They indicated an separate e-mail will be forthcoming regarding these orders but did not say when it would arrive. Additional e-mail messages will also give us the opportunity to confirm and/or change the personalized notation on the box. Hope they can merge the two systems without any issues. Best Wishes-Jimmy

This is so weird. Per "Dam's" message > I tried to confirm my credit card info by calling customer service and they told me that they did not have access to that data so could not confirm my credit card data. I just wanted to determine which card they have on record for the purchase and whether it is one that is still viable. (My memory is shaky since the order was placed so long ago :-) Anyone else experience difficulty with confirming credit card data? Any help here on the process for confirming credit card data?

Called this morning. Told customer service this was about updating cc info. for E72. He asked for my order # which I gave. We then updated because the expire date had changed. I asked if we could review billing and shipping info - no problem. Then I told him I had a second E72 order that I had not received an email on and asked if we could update on it also - no problem. davwal, maybe when you call, instead of trying to find out what card you gave them, give your order# and at the update point give the credit card info you want the purchase charged to. The good gentleman said end of August a hold would be run on my card, if there were any issues I would be notified, I wouldn't just lose my order. First week of Sept. my card would be charged. Shipping is supposed follow close on top of that :-) :-) :-)

All legitimate e-commerce sites are not allowed to keep your credit card information by law. If you are really freaked about the credit card you used, one idea is to call customer service and replace your credit card # info with one you know will work.

My conversations with Customer Service regarding order number sequence DN795XXXX have all been the same. They can't access those orders. I will continue to stay in touch them in the hopes someone will be able to confirm my credit card information. Even though I have a order confirmation e-mail dated January 21, 2001 for the order DN795XXXX, customer service has not been able access a record of this order. Hopefully things can get worked out in the next week or so. Best Wishes-Jimmy

I have just been speaking to cusomer service. The agent explained that because the DN order numbers were made using a different system, the cusomer service agents do not have access to any of the information about DN numbered orders! This is a little worrying. All they can do is write down what you want and then pass on that information to what was termed by the agent I spoke with as a 'higher authority'. Information and confirmation of any changes made would then be passed back from the 'higher authority' to the agent ,who then said he would email it to me. ' I tried to change a card number and correct a missing line in my shipping address. I hope it works. Phhewww

Yes - I had the exact same issue as JBH69Flyer with customer service not being able to view or update my order - I posted that complication here on July 19 but did not clarify that I had a DN order no. - I just wanted to confirm my credit card info but customer service told me that the DN numbers were in the first 300 orders (and apparently, based on another post here, that system crashed almost immediately.) I DID get a confirm email from customer service on July 15 which said ----------- Re-authorization of Payment Method Before shipping and charging you for your order, we will re-authorize your bank card. This re-authorization will put a temporary hold on funds in your account that is equal to the amount of your purchase. We will ship the order within a week of placing the hold, at which point your card will be charged for the order. If you need to make changes to you credit card information, please call our customer service department ..... ---------------------------- But when I called customer service they were not able to help out here. The July 15 email from customer service also noted that I could change shipping address changes online - which I did as the data they listed for me did not include my city (but everything else was fine). So...anyone else with a DN number have success in verifying-changing credit card info?

Our pc crashed sometime ago. And everything that wasn't lost was purged. Unfortunately this includes my confirmation email regarding my purchase of a personalized box. Infact I'm pretty sure the email addy that I used doesn't exist anymore. So I don't have any proof that I ordered one of these. Except that I obviously gave my cc #. Now my question is should I be worried about this? I know that my cc doesn't expire till next year. Thanks

Compare this (73 CDs + extras in a replica steamer trunk) for $450 to the upcoming Miles Davis box "The genius of Miles Davis" (43 CDs + extras in a replica trumpet case) for $749. As you can see the format is fairly similar, so the comparison is valid. The big difference is that the majority of the music on "Europe '72" is previously unreleased whereas the Miles box compiles 8 previously released box sets into one mega box. I hope this finally brings home to the moaners that Rhino are not big rip-off artists and have produced a product of exceptional value. Stick that in you trumpet and smoke it!

Get notification emails in which our town/city was missing? Seems as if this has cropped up in a few messages. I went in and added (re-added?) my town with the online system, but was wondering the entire time if this was screwing up something...or if it was even necessary at all.

I did that fill in missing town info prior to calling to update my credit card. At that time I confirmed my mailing address. They had all the info on record. I have gotten order confirmations for other things I have bought here with some item lines blank. When I called customer service they had all the correct info. On the other hand when I try to send a PM now I get a blank page. Don't know for sure if the message is going out or not. Point? Don't assume anything.

I guess in celebration of Grateful Dead Night at AT&T Park last night, ESPN.com is celebrating with five streams from Rhino's "Europe" package. Apparently Greatest Story Ever Told” (Paris) and “Playing In The Band” (London) are previously unreleased. More residual wierdness I guess. Some topics have 'em, others do not. I also got the blank screen one time when I logged in, but that now seems to work just fine. Also the font for the left hand menu seems to vary from page to page. On the plus side, it does mean that this site is never boring and predictable.

"As a follow-up to the San Francisco Giants celebrating music legends the Grateful Dead on Tuesday night at AT&T Park, ESPN Music is offering an exclusive free stream of five performances from the band until Aug. 17. The five tracks below are part of Rhino Records' "Europe '72" All-The-Music, 72-disc edition that won't be available until September. The Grateful Dead's 1972 European tour was the band's first outside of North America and they took a 16-track recorder on the trip. Aug. 9 was also the 16th anniversary of Jerry Garcia's death, and San Franciscans have been remembering the Grateful Dead co-founder with numerous events, such as Jerry Day on Sunday at McLaren Park. The Giants used Tuesday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates to honor the band on Grateful Dead Night. Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Phil Lesh sang the national anthem along with Giants third base coach Tim Flannery. And during the seventh-inning stretch, NBA legend and noted Dead Head Bill Walton sang "Take Me Out To The Ball Game" with Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead.
