    Europe '72:
    The Complete Recordings -
    All The Music Edition

Our Europe '72 boxed set is now officially sold out, with all 7,200 boxes now gone! We can't thank you enough for your support, for having faith in the project and taking the plunge to purchase this unprecedented release. Despite the fact that it's going to be a bit of a wait before it arrives on your door step, we are sure you'll be blown away with the results.

We are now offering the All-The-Music edition of Europe '72, which includes all of the music recorded on the tour, with each show in its own individual package, complete with its own liner notes by Dead scholars such as David Gans, Blair Jackson, Steve Silberman, Gary Lambert and others, as well as by attendees of some of the shows. You'll get 73 CDs and over 70 hours of prime Grateful Dead.

    IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC...

Because you dared dream this might happen one day… Because you went down to the Gypsy Woman and offered up your first-born to try to make it happen… Because there are enough passionate Dead Heads at Rhino/GD who thought it might be cool for this to happen… It’s happening! Coming in September is a gargantuan EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping and clearly cosmic 73 DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this enormous box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

    Suing Vendors
If I was Rhino, I would be pressuring vendors involved (sleeve makers, pressing plants) to refund money or replace defective product. I wouldn't waste any time going forward with litigation if they dragged their feet, either. But in the meantime, I would apologize and do what I could to make things right. I wouldn't worry about money lost, I would worry about customers lost. Far more important. Sadly, the shoddy customer disservice at Rhino is, in some ways, worse than the problems involved. They clearly are only about money. When a forum moderator has to intercede so a guy can get one replacement disc, then 'Houston, we have a problem.' She's gonna be running around like a headless chicken for the next ten years if that's how things are gonna work. It's surreal. And then you have Blair Jackson milling around asking people what their favorite Dead cover tunes are. "Hey--did you know it was twenty years ago that Bill Graham died?" Gee, Blair--we were thinking about more important things. We had to pay for our sets. We got scammed--that's why we're banging on Dr. Rhino's door--get lost. "Oh, ok--did I tell you that there's a new 1976 Road Trips?" KOO-KOO! KOO-KOO! KOO-KOO!

    The thing that is interesting
The thing that is interesting to me is that in the Real World, there are few people who would plunk down $450 for 73 GD discs of night after night of a tour. The ones responding here are among the very few who would. Happily. And out of those comparatively very few hard core fans with both the interest and the money to buy this set, there are a good number, like myself, who have been so alienated by Rhino and their crappy customer service and laughable number of mistakes that we will likely never give Rhino any more money. If the GD members knew, and really cared about selling these ultra expensive boxes in the future, they would be livid.

    Wow
You know it is bad when someone says, "I only have ten defective discs." Unkle Sam just said the same things I've been saying, and it didn't sound like he was some sort of an agitator "stirring things up." He's just yet another guy who got scammed. Yet another guy who realizes that E72 problems should have been resolved before Dave's Faves got started. Ten discs???? 48 discs? Who needs to "stir things up" in this Rhino-created shitstorm? Please. Dr. Rhino should be indicted for grievous malpractice.

I was browsing through some of my old emails regarding the box set in anticipation for its delivery and I noticed on one of the emails, sent July 15, that on my shipping address for the box set my city was missing. All the other info was there (name, street, state, zip) and I seriously doubt I forgot to leave my hometown off when I ordered. I clicked on the link in the email to change shipping address and I added my city to it. What I am wondering is should I expect a confirmation email or how do I find out that they now have everything correct? I had to enter my order number to do this by the way. Just want to make sure everything is perfect so I don't have any problems once the ship date arrives. Thanks.

just to say that on the phone yesterday customer service very helpfully sorted out my problem of having two order numbers for one order and seemed generally more confident in sorting out problems with the DN*** order numbers.

Same experience, no town listed on the address in the confirming email, I also went into the system and added it. Mostly, leaving nothing to chance -- my zip code was there, which along with my street address should be enough to get a package to me...but who knows? The conspiracy theory part of my brain imagines all of these large and small snafus as ploys to keep us all paranoid and frenzied. The cynical part of my brain just blames it on poor execution of fulfillment part of the project. And remembers that the term "snafu" is an acronym that begins with the words "situation normal." Just waiting on the big truck to pull up to the house and a couple of guys hauling the big ole box through my front door!

there is probably no cause for alarm, but rather than be in a state of anxiety, call Customer Service and talk to an actual human. This seems to be resulting in the best experience all around. Should this fail, PM me.

Hi - all I posted a comment a few weeks back about not being able to have my order reviewed because I had a "DN" order number, specifically I wanted to review which credit card was listed under the order. That is *still* the case that they are not able to review DN orders, *but* I was able to give the customer service rep (very helpful) the credit card I wanted to use and he was able to record that, so that seemed to work. It seems that the "DN" orders are on a separate system not accessible to customer service reps. Regarding missing city's in the address for your order - I was told that since they have the zip, it is not necessary to have the city. So - onwards and upwards.....

I'm sure that there was some debate a few weeks ago on these pages about postage to locations outside the US. Like all non-US customers I guess, I just paid the standard $85 for USPS Priority International Shipping, knowing that I would probably, in addition, have to pay Import Tax at this end. But did I understand from these pages that I might get reemed for another charge from a specific US courier for delivery to the UK, which I would have to pay on delivery?? If so, is there any advice anyone could offer as to what to so for the best? I've got no problem with the $85 or likely Import Tax, but don't want to be paying a seperate, second lot of effectively postage costs. Cheers

USPS will not charge you extra, and if you get lucky (really lucky bearing in mind the size and cost of the box) you may not have to pay customs. On the other hand, UPS will present the package to customs and will ask for an extra charge (upon delivery) for giving the package to customs, who will levy import duty on it, and getting it back from customs. I always use USPS to keep costs to a minimum. I have never had a problem with USPS. You say you opted for USPS so you shouldn't get any charges other than the $85 shipping and the import duty. I hope this clarifies matters.

I just saw that my card was charged yesterday, 8/19 for THE BOX. My birthday is tomorrow, 8/21. Best present I could imagine, short of actually having the parcel handed to me today. And, yeah, I can't imagine any way to listen to it other than in the exact order of the shows (if for no other reason, at least to make sure I don't skip over one or another of the shows or discs). One thing, though--with that many discs to play, Rhino and dead.net need to be VERY liberal about time frames for reporting/replacing defective discs (and there are bound to be some of those out there, somewhere...). I'd suggest 60 days as a good timeline for warranty replacements of CDs.

Hello there. I was wondering if the e-mail notifying the recipient of their card being re-authorised, which some people have obviously received in the last two or three days has been received by everyone who ordered the Europe '72 box back in the Spring, or are they just notifying one batch of people, getting through their orders, then moving onto the next lot. As you may have guessed I have not had that message and therefore was unprepared for the action on my card! (i.e. I had the money salted away elsewhere. It's in the right place now, so unless my order was dealt with on the first day I should be alright). Being in Britain it's less straightforward to 'phone so hopefully I just haven't got up to the top of the list yet. But if everyone else had received a message except me I might start to worry a little. Please reassure me if you can. Thanks very much. (By the way, I'm not sure that sixty days is long enough to listen to everything in order to ensure that there are no faulty discs!)

My card's not been charged yet, nor have I received the message some have gotten saying it would be. However, I did call Customer Service a few weeks ago to update my credit card info, and they were able to find my order and make the change quickly and easily so I'm thinking everything is copacetic. My guess is that it will take a while to authorize all these cards. They supposedly began on Friday the 19th and since they probably didn't do anything over the weekend, I'm not surprised that there are still many of us who have not yet had their cards charged.

Good, guys! Give us box-sets of COMPLETE shows evn if it means reissue of previously released material. Why not one of the Filmore East 1971 shows? Put them all together, chronologically and show-wise? Another of ALL acoustic sets? From whenever wherever! But release omly ONE moster-box-set a year, the exchequer cannot handle larger traffic. As the people from California are the only people mentioning being lucky enough to pay SALES TAX on their BOX SETs ($450.00 + 42.76 Tax = $492.76 in my case/city), that must mean they are being shipped from California, greatly reducing our delivery time from the week to 10 days mentioned. There has to be some reward for the extra $42.76!

At first I looked at charges this period and only the usual suspects were there so I waas bummed, but if you click the pending charges, you will see the $450... Will let you know when I get the goods :-) iGrateful

Tomcruz Just because they are charging people in Ca. tax doesn't mean it is being mailed from here. The tax applies to business with a presence in the state mailing to an address in state which of course Rhino does have. It could be made and shipped from anywhere

Just picked up on the latest comments on possible custom charges etc. for non US orders. This is the state of play in the UK. Stuff from the US tends not to attract any charges so long as they are fairly small packets - a couple of CDs or DVDs say. There is an official value limit below which they are not meant to worry but in practice it is down to the size. The reason is simple - if they held all the thousands of packets which arrives each day thanks to internet shopping in sorting offices waiting for poor sods to turn up and pay the charges there would be chaos with long lines of people trying to get their goods. Equally they don't bother to get the postie to collect the charges anymore because a) no-one is ever in and b) this slows up delivery times. So far, so good... the problem is going to be that these boxes will be rather large and may be picked up for charging anyway. Even so, some may slip thru the net. In the past some of the dead.net stuff used to arrive via a central European distribution point in which case custom charges may not get levied.

But is "charge pending." For folks who don't see a charge yet, it's probably tucked away in the "charge pending" hold category...just to make sure that you can pay. The "real" charge will happen when the package is shipped. And what happened to the postings on some of these topics? Randomly rearranged by some gremlins or drunken flying monkeys?

Anybody know if Dead.net is charging sales taxes on non-Califirnia residents? Although I haven't been charged yet, the pre-authorization amount on my credit card shows $485. In other words, $450 plus an extra $35 for either sales taxes or shipping. It shouldn't be shipping so it must be sales taxes! If Dead.net is charging sales taxes to non-California residents, they are begging for a sales tax audit from numerous states. Best Wishes-Jimmy

This is easily the most agonizing purchase I have EVER made. Hell I could go out and buy a car or a house with less friggin drama than this... "I won't take your life won't even take a limb just unload my shotgun and take a little skin"

Here's what I found about shipping on the box "$450 including domestic shipping" which is still up on the site here. On the wall of the garden a legend did say: "No one may come here since no one may stay."

That does sound a little alarming. I can say that I've had one or two Dead.net purchases show up at my door before the cc charge showed against my account. Not usually, though, and not this time.

But I could imagine this could take awhile to get through 7200 plus CC accounts. Most likely this is a manual process. This could be why only a handful of people have posted on this forum of their credit card getting pending charges. I just hope these arrive before labor day here in the states.
