    Europe '72:
    The Complete Recordings -
    All The Music Edition

Our Europe '72 boxed set is now officially sold out, with all 7,200 boxes now gone! We can't thank you enough for your support, for having faith in the project and taking the plunge to purchase this unprecedented release. Despite the fact that it's going to be a bit of a wait before it arrives on your door step, we are sure you'll be blown away with the results.

We are now offering the All-The-Music edition of Europe '72, which includes all of the music recorded on the tour, with each show in its own individual package, complete with its own liner notes by Dead scholars such as David Gans, Blair Jackson, Steve Silberman, Gary Lambert and others, as well as by attendees of some of the shows. You'll get 73 CDs and over 70 hours of prime Grateful Dead.

    IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC...

Because you dared dream this might happen one day… Because you went down to the Gypsy Woman and offered up your first-born to try to make it happen… Because there are enough passionate Dead Heads at Rhino/GD who thought it might be cool for this to happen… It’s happening! Coming in September is a gargantuan EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping and clearly cosmic 73 DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this enormous box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

    Absolute Disparagement
I have read many stories, both pleasant and grim, about experiences with the handling of this set, and I have finally decided to share mine. I ordered my "All the Music Edition" late this summer and was greatly anticipating its arrival. Around October 3rd, I decided to call customer service and ask why I hadn't received it. I was told by customer service that they "weren't sure when it would be shipped to me, but hopefully it would be within the next week." I asked how I would be compensated for the item not being delivered in September "as advertised." Customer service told me to email DrRhino in order to find out more information. I POLITELY emailed Dr.Rhino to ask when my item would arrive and to ask what was being done for those of us whose item was not shipped as advertised. The next day DrRhino dismissively responded that I would be emailed "when my item was sent out." I again emailed DrRhino explaining that I own a business and understand that sometimes things do not go as planned. When this happens, I always make some gesture to help maintain the satisfaction of my loyal customers. I asked again, "How will WE be compensated for this item not being delivered as advertised?"....... No Answer for two weeks, period. About October 17th, I cancelled my order and grabbed a digital copy from a friend's discs...absolutely free and just as enjoyable to listen to. After years of buying every release I could afford, I SADLY refuse to do ANY business with these people ever again. I tried to support the band, I always have; however, this treatment is so far from what the band would do, or ever has done, to me.

Reaction of Europe 72 Complete Recordings from work associate
This is a true story which I would like to share about a friend at work that is a casual GD music fan with maybe 9 or 10 GD CD's in his collection of over 1000 CD's.He asked me politely if he can borrow one of the discs to determine if he buy Europe 72 II or some the individual releases. So I let him try out number 22 which had a good selection on it's 4 CD's. As I handed it to him I showed him how one has to be extremely careful like a lab technician with the cover due to it's fragile construction. I proceeded to inform him how I already had ripped 2 of the others by accident. He assured me he would be careful and at the end of the day he came back with his his head hanging low and apologies that he tore one of the corners even after careful handling. But despite this he informed me that besides the covers being the cheapest pieces of garbage he has ever seen, the artwork and liner notes were fantastic and the mix was probably the best quality Dead he has heard. He couldn't believe they would ever put such flimsy covers on such an expensive CD boxset. Enough said.

    Poor Experience
Frampton- I pre ordered and was never told that a PO Box was not an option and later heard that they delivered other orders to PO Boxes. My order was lost and not shipped unitl I called them to see what was up. I finally received my order without a personalization sticker or numbered box. I am on show 7 and so far no skips, but there are some marks on discs from what looks like cardboard dust. Some ripped sleeves that are not created equal and there was really no chance not ripping them. What really stinks is that I am having a hard time really enjoying some awesome music- 1. because I am paranoid of finding skips and I am listening not just for pleasure but to see if I have one. 2. Still no personalization- some say this is minor, but it means a lot to me. We all put much emotion into these things because the music means so much and of course because they promised it. 3. It was misleading the way they proposed the extras- I had dreams of a t shirt, dvd, or heck pins like the ones in the '73 box, but we received two books that are nice but its nothing unique like this box should have been (c'mon its the '72 Europe Tour!). Anyway, said it before but I'll say it again- not even one official apology from anyone. I will continue to buy the music, but I do not feel grateful and that just plain sucks....

My CC company, Wells Fargo Visa, gave a call about a possible fraud alert related to the charge this morning. Dead.net Store for $450. One thing I have noticed on my WF account is that debit card charges will show up almost immediately (or as pending), while credit card charges often don't show up until the close of business or the next day and are never "pending." I suppose that initial swipe is the pre-auth, and then the charge doesn't occur until it is actually "presented" by the merchant (this is my understanding based on what the CSR told me).

Still waiting and I can't bare the anticipation, I just want to process to go through easy like the wind. Then to know I will receive this box is truly like no other thing I've ever looked forward to....ahhh i could go on and on. I love the Grateful Dead through and through simply I don't know what the world would be like without out, and I miss the old it a hell of a lot! Thank you and thank you again, so many roads!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the info. I too have a WF Visa. I wouldn't even be worried but you come on here and read the posts and it sends ya into a panic. The dead.net folks probably sit back and read these posts with a chuckle - it's their entertainment watching the hippies scrambling around over a pile of CDs. Sorry but this is the most ridiculous buying experience of all time, which doesn't bode well for me making any further purchases from here... Last Friday, 8/19, I had the $450 pending charge put on my debit card. I checked my account today to see if the transaction had gone through and it was nowhere to be seen. Not in completed or pending transactions. Was that just to verify once again I had the proper amount of funds in my account before shipping the box set and actually being charged?

I'm turning into a nervous wreck. Never had so much trouble giving money for a purchase. Thank You Rhino/GDM...

Over here in the U.K., and as yet, no pre authorisation on my current account. I'll re-check on lunch today. Just wondering if the powers that be are concentrating on Stateside purchasers initially and then onto Europe and beyond. One thing is for certain, i just cannot wait for the goods to arrive. Got a couple of holidays coming up and it'd be great to have the Europe '72 shows loaded onto the Creative for the trips. Having said that, i'm hardly bereft of any music to listen to, but that's not the point, now is it kids ?. Soon, soon, soon !. Later, Ian.

My pre-authorization amount is still $450. I noticed that Amazon and many other sites use the pre-authorzation feature also. I had an older Amazon pre-order item come through recently which gave me the impression that Dead.net was going to charge me $450 plus an additional $35. I thought they were going to charge sales tax on the order but I was mistaken. Now that the Amazon order has shipped, my pre-authorization amount is back to $450. Good idea to call Dead.Net now if you have any questions. 1-800-225-3323.

Long Dead: unless you live in California, the total coast should be $450. Look back at your original email when you ordered. I just did. Mine said $450 total. Of course, I live in Texas. But they can't send you a receipt for one amount, then change it after authorization. That's akin to fraud and I don't think GDM is that kind of business. Having said that, if they've reconsidered and decided to charge for shipping (just not sales tax) then they owe it to their customers to inform them of that change. Again, I don't think that's the case.

They have no way of checking to see if your card was pre-authorized. I'm hoping my card was pre-authorized and then the charge went away before I saw it. Sometimes I think this whole she-bang is just not worth it.

Got the e-mail over a week ago informing that my account would be charged for pre-auth and would get a follow-up e-mail in about a week noting that box had shipped and my account would be charged - also the subsequent e-mail would have tracking info. My account indeed was charged as "Pending" and the amount of $450 was subtracted from my balance. Checked account this morning and the amount of $450 was added back into my account balance, with no charges in either "Pending" or "Past Transactions". First went to the website to check my status, which said I had no outstanding orders! Called Customer Service and had them check my status and was told it looked fine and I should be billed when the box ships. He said there had been a lot of confusion regarding the billing of the box. This has been quite the ordering experience, but I'm confident the music will more that make up for this cluster#%&!.

The Order Status only applies to orders places within the past 45 days. If you ordered the box, you likely placed your order in Jan/Feb (whenever it was announced) so it wouldn't pop up there. If you received an email with an Order Number, you're ok, so you can relax.

My credit card number changed between January, when I did the initial order, and now - I called Dead.Net today and gave them the new number but have not gotten a pre auth charge yet. The guy said no boxes were going out until Sept 15th, so I am puzzled to see people here saying "it will ship next week".. In any case, I am sure I am not the only person whose credit card info changed between January and now - perhaps someone could check on this issue???

Hopefully yours is an isolated incident. With 3000 personalized sets and the remaining 4200 sets, if people are getting more than they ordered this doesn't bode well for the people who are waiting. Obviously they've made more than the 7200 sets, but this could impact customers who are waiting on a personalized set.

In the grand tradition of a Grateful Dead show, it must be remembered that you always came away with much more than with which you came, It is THE moral of the story. UPDATE - I rec'd a response from Dead.net who acknowledged the email error, they advised that only one set was sent but two tracking numbers were provided in error. One tracking number is inactive, which appears to bear this out. Also rec'd second shipping confirmation today for 8/31, consistent with the first (although both tracking numbers are still shown; one good, one inactive). Invoice amount of $489.38 including CA sales tax. Credit card has still NOT been charged. Called Dead.net. no charge to my CC, just the hold, no email notification. Was told by them it was shipped Friday and should get here by next Friday. Plugged the tracking number in and it should get here today!!! Have been waiting for this for 9 months. Cannot wait to dig in. Will report back with details. Mine was a personalized box so one of the first 3000. What's it like gratefuldaddy?

Very nice box, like a old time steamer trunk. Haven't had a chance to dig through the stuff yet (at work). I was completely surprised when it showed up, I had not received any email notifications since after I did the original pre-order.
