Europe '72: The Complete Recordings - All The Music Edition

    Europe '72:
    The Complete Recordings -
    All The Music Edition

Our Europe '72 boxed set is now officially sold out, with all 7,200 boxes now gone! We can't thank you enough for your support, for having faith in the project and taking the plunge to purchase this unprecedented release. Despite the fact that it's going to be a bit of a wait before it arrives on your door step, we are sure you'll be blown away with the results.

We are now offering the All-The-Music edition of Europe '72, which includes all of the music recorded on the tour, with each show in its own individual package, complete with its own liner notes by Dead scholars such as David Gans, Blair Jackson, Steve Silberman, Gary Lambert and others, as well as by attendees of some of the shows. You'll get 73 CDs and over 70 hours of prime Grateful Dead.

    IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC...

Because you dared dream this might happen one day… Because you went down to the Gypsy Woman and offered up your first-born to try to make it happen… Because there are enough passionate Dead Heads at Rhino/GD who thought it might be cool for this to happen… It’s happening! Coming in September is a gargantuan EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping and clearly cosmic 73 DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this enormous box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

Europe '72 - great release, great music, some sloppy work
I really enjoy the box set and glad to have it. A couple of things, I was sent an email about some sort of limited edition certificate in September, which never arrived. That's ok though, I ordered the set for the music, not the certificate. If there was meant to be a certificate, maybe it will arrive. I run my music now on an Ipod and I am amazed at how poorly the digital labeling is on the discs, misspelled song names, four different album names for one show, some say Europe '72, some don't, some say Grateful Dead, some say GD, some have the date in one place, others in another. I ended up erasing all of them from my ipod and then re-added them to my Ipod one at a time, reviewing and editing the digital labels so the Ipod t link the various discs for each show together. Also, it would be nice if they had digital images of the different sleeves available on line, luckily a scanner works wonders. Finally, there are some glitches on some of the discs. With 73 discs or however many there are, I'm not sure I will find them all. The first show from Wemblay was defective as it had noticeable glitches or skips in the music. That said, I already live with an Ipod that skips sometimes, whether from me printing something while downloading which may cause a digital hiccup, or maybe the harddrive on my Ipod has bad sectors. Will I ask for replacement discs? Maybe if I get the time to listen to each disc all the way through, which I probably won't anytime soone. All in all a great effort but perhaps the digital editors should put the hashish away when adding digital labels in the future.

    Music GREAT, Packaging Sea Wrap
I ordered the All Music editon in October and it arrived this past Friday, December 2nd. I finally got a chance to listen to the first show today on my commute back and forth to work. I tried carefully to remove the first disc from the CD sleeve and it was imposible to do so without tearing the sleeve. I was mighty angry and didn't really start to enjoy the music until Big Boss Man. The second disc was a bit easier to remove, but still a struggle. The third disc came out easy. When I got home I tried to eject the third disc from the player but it wouldn't come out. After five minutes the disc came out. I looked at the music side of the disc and saw what appears to be what could best be desceibed as water stains on the outter edge. I checked the first 2 discs, first one still a pain to get out without causing furthur damage. The first 2 discs did not exhibit the "defect" of the third. I'm afraid to go through the whole collection to inspect the rest of the discs for damages for fear of having all the sleeves with rips in them before I'm ready to listen to them. When I got home the wife wanted me to go into town to pick up some items for her so I figured I'd get an early start listening to the second show. Well, I couldn't help but tear the sleeve for this show trying to get the first disc out. I guess all the sleeves in my collection are going to get ripped just trying to do the basic function of listening to all of the music. What a shame, great tour, great remix/rematering, great music and crappy packaging:>( I'm highly disappointed. But I did get all the music, I think. Time will tell...

    Replacement discs...
So, I have PM's Mary E, emailed Dr. Rhino, and called customer service. customer service told me I would receive replacements shortly about 3 months ago. Mary E kindly forwarded my troubles to Dr. Rhino. Dr. Rhino evidently doesn't respond to emails. This leaves me sitting here with my trigger finger on the cancel button for the Dave's Picks subscription I hesitantly ordered. My question to y'all is, has anyone heard anything more about replacement discs for the defects?

Mine arrived today. Dead.net CS emailed me the tracking # after I asked for it, but the box had already arrived here in Davenport, IA. I used a lens with a thin focal plane which accounts for some of the blurriness on these. linky I think the shipping box will make a good storage box for this since I don't have a real good place to keep it (and to keep it away from the drunken midgets). Also, I agree that the lid could have used some support, but with those books it wouldn't matter much. For storage I'm keeping the cardboard insert in place.

I'll never purchase another thing from dead.net after this nightmare. I was one of the first 20 to order a box set and have heard nothing. I called cal dead numerous times to update and check on my order, and they assured me everything was ok. It seems no attempt was made to charge my card even though I have an order number "on another system" They assure me that I will someday get this box set, but I think I will keep my 500 dollars and download it for free.

For those asking. The number is on the sticker located on the front, beside the latch. At least that's the number I'm looking at on mine. On the bottom left corner of the "Inspected Baggage" sticker it says 0912/7200.

Thanks clmartin. I don't have that sticker on mine. I was thinking that maybe only the first 2000 were numbered but after re-reading a description of the set I saw that all all sets were to be numbered. A few of my stickers were already coming off so maybe it fell off during packing as it was not in the plastic wrap either. Small potaoes. The set is beautiful and the first night sounds great! Cheers to everyone involved, you did a bang-up job! I'll get the numbering straightened out in a few days when things settle down! Thanks again for all your work guys! Gary

It was on my doorstep today, Aug 30, in Colorado. I just paced around it for a half hour. # 0786/7200 What a trip! I don't know where to start. If anybody need me, I'll be in the basement with my HDCD player for the next month.

My set arrived just about 90 minutes ago!! The packaging is all very beautifully done! I do not have a sticker on mine indicating which number mine is, however. I'd like to know but otherwise I think it's a wonderful set and I cannot wait to get into the music...

For the Canuck DeadHeads - Just to let you know that a hold was placed on my card - It came out to $538.42 CDN - i know this for confirmation, because it is the only charge on my card. I was one of the first 3000 to get a personalized edition - so it seems that they did not mail these in number order. I wonder where these are shipping from and by what means - hopefully not UPS! Wonder what the import/duty charges might be!! Glad everybody is starting to get these in the USA - seems like they might be starting the International orders - I still can't figure out why Canada is under International, instead of North America and International?? Enjoy reading the US order feedbacks, can't wait for mine to arrive in Ontario, Canada thanks

your box # is printed on the same label as the personalization... a label that is applied to the trunk before shipping it to you (my guess) shipping is going to take several days in some cases obviously not all 7200 are even out the door it seems that only the personalized cases are #'d

Ok hot shot, so you've got $1200 to blow on some ultra fetishized Dead that many will have for free, and listening to it on better nearfield monitors than your crappy Bose floorstanders. Ask yourself this: WHAT are you gonna do with a set that was personalized for Fugging Dooshbag? What are you gonna tell your kids? They know all the Dooshbags -- see 'em everyday, all over town! And now they will be out spending your cake. What a nightmare! You just had to have that set and they can't go see Raffi and they have to go to public nursery school? Bad karma ahead.

So, I want to upload the entire boxset to an ipod. I bought a new Ipod just for the boxset only. When I go to import the cd into itunes, there are no track names. It says it can't find the cd in the database? Am I doing something wrong? Do I have to type in all of the songs on every CD? Is there a work around for this problem? Any help is much appreciated. My set came yesterday but I didn't know it until today... what a nice surprise. So far I am thrilled by the set... great packaging... great materials... that new book is sweet... I'll be listening to all of it starting tomorrow and I expect to be as happily satisfied as I am by the packaging and all the other recent HDCD releases I have from the Dead. Is it worth the money? Who cares?!

I got no inspected by sticker with any number on mine. Makes me think that they produced a lot more than the 7200 they said. No way to prove it now. No one seems to be able to give me a credible answer as to why my "Limited Edition" has no documentation to prove it. Not that I am not thrilled with what I received but I certainly feel a little cheated.

Why! Why! Why! Why after all the time and expense spent on this and you had to give us the same crappy cd sleeves the cd's are hard to get out of the sleeves so once there out I'll have to put them in plastic cases. Trying to get cd's out of the sleeves... It's like I am dying of thirst and I can't unscrew my can-tine

You are not doing anything wrong- thee are new release CDs and the only way they get into the database is if someone puts them there. So yesterday I wZ ripping 4/7 into iTunes and I filled in the artist, titledthe albu 1972/04/07 - wembley empire pool, London, England. Under grouPing I put Europe 72 a the complete recordings and since I omly had time to rip discs 2 amd 3 I numbered them 2 and 3 of 72. After that I went. To advanced on the menu and clicked submit cd track names. So now discs 2 and 3 should actually be found. I also had to enter al the track names.

These are popping up like crazy on ebay. Even being sold as individual shows. What is wrong with people? They will ruin someone's legitimate chance at one of these just to fill their pockets. I say ship these people off to Iraq.

i was one of the last ones in, i didnt order during the initial flurry, i didnt even order immediately after the offering of the music-only set, i eventually caved and ordered the music-only version days later then i got the email saying they had extra boxes (due to spousal interference) and so i jumped on that, so i must be like at least #7000 or so, because of this and the box #'s being posted here barely scratching 2000 i thought mine wouldnt come until deep into september, but last night the doorbell rang while i was watching the news with my wife, i was a bit annoyed someone would "pop in" while i was chillin on a work night, i peered through the blinds and saw the brown truck speeding off... i got through the rest of the news while inspecting the new set visually and leafing through the books (thats a lot of pics), i didnt hear any of the news, at the conclusion of the news-hour my wife turned off the TV and dutifully went into the other room knowing i had held off as long as humanly possible, she did later shout "that sounds good" once from the other room no shipping notification, obviously no tracking number and no cc charge yet... i aint complainin, gonna be hard to get anything done for a while

This is going to occupy a lot of my spare time. The sound quality of what I have heard is amazing. I don't know the state of the source material so I don't know what fully had to be done to make this so dynamic and vibrant but I am impressed. Ditto, the essay by Blair Jackson and the overall vision of the package. This project is absolutely excellent. I wonder what could be next? How can you meet or top this? Ah, well, I'm sure we all have our own opinions on that. Now lets go run and see

Amazing. There must be about a dozen of these on Flea Bay by now. One enterprising entrepreneur is even breaking the set apart and selling them off as individual shows. One box is selling for $450 -- less than original cost. I hope that with Rhino meeting demand with the music-only version that these leaches wind up losing money. I'll sell mine for $7,200. Any bidders?

Just noticed that one of the guys who posts regularly on the Eurotraders Group site has just received his box set....looks like all of us nervous EuroDeadHead's are soon to be treated !. What's most bizarre about the whole thing is the number of people who have received their goods without their accounts/cards having been debited by GDM/Rhino...very worrying from their business perspective. Anyway, i've just allocated a special spot in my soundroom for the beast and have one of my creative music players readied for loading with the first 32GB of shows. Looks like it's going to be a wonderful autumn/winter here in New Brighton. Later, Ian.

After slight paranoia and annoyance that people were already selling copies on the web at a fat profit (actual photos of the trunk while I had heard nothing!), I phoned Rhino and (after ignoring the dumb "macho" message many times) was informed delivery was imminent! It was and now it is in my grubby paws ready for many late night listening sessions. THANKS!

I received my boxset yesterday and it is quite unique. UPS shipping was quick. I did get an email about a month ago from Dead.Net for any address changes which I did fill out seeing I had moved. Unfortunately it went to the old address which is nearby. No really big deal. The books look good and he music of course will be great. However when I tried to remove the first disc from CD1 the sleeve ripped. Rhino and Dead.Net have got to improve the packaging. For a big investment like this, those covers to the CD's are going to be in bad shape after a few plays. I am thinking of making duplicates of all 73.

until about Christmas to get through all of these. I am finding that I can't just listen to a show and move to the next one - I've only heard a few these before in their entirety and so I've already listened to 4/7/72 2-3 times and am still going back to certain spots, segues, etc. Just brilliant playing. A peak of the band if not THE peak, for sure. So overjoyed to have this and great job to all who worked on it.

My box set was waiting for me when I got home from work last night. Unfortunately, I had previous plans and wasn't able to give the set the attention it deserved. That will change tonight. I did notice that my box is not numbered. I reserve in time for the personalized version. The trunk is much bigger than I anticipted and the shelf space I had previous cleared for it was not big enough. I will probably also make copies of all 73 discs in order to save them from the multiple in and out of the digi-pac's. I do the same think with my road trip sets except I use the old fatty quad cd cases. They would take up too much space for this set so I will use univenture sleeves and scan the front and back of the covers for artwork. It will definately take time but in the long run it will be well worth it.

My wife just called me at work to let me know that UPS just delivered my boxset! It is going to be real hard to concentrate at work this afternoon. FYI, I haven't see any charges on my credit card, nor did I receive a shipping confirmation via email. I had called the Dead Support two days ago and they were able to provide a tracking number, so that was the first clue I even had that it was shipped. Thanks to everyone involved with this release! P.S. This is my Birthday, Anniversary and Christmas present all rolled into one! :-)

I have never once complained about anything on these boards. I have defended Rhino and this whole process since it started in January. Yet, here I am today, with no box set, and yet, still no good answers from customer support. I called in again today for the 5th time, and was told yet again, that my original card did not work. No s**t shirlock, that card is no longer active, hence, why I have called in the 4 other times and gave a new cc number. All they can say is, well the system hasn't updated yet and your box hasn't shipped, and we don't know when it will. This is absolute crap of the highest magnitude. Since I have actually tried to defend these idiots and have gotten nothing, I am switching tactics and will now complain vociferously. Maybe it will change my luck. I guess this is what I get for buying every release they have ever put out, and spent tons of money on other merch. Thank you Rhino for crapping on a good customer, and turning me into a whining skeptic like so many others here.

Wharfrat1 - Same here. I gave them the new CC info thrice and I am getting reassurance from them, but no specifics about when I might expect the box to ship. One guy said "it takes 48 hours" to enter new credit card info. A woman said "7 days, it will ship 7 days after the new card is entered". Argh. I just hope it comes some day.

Alright, I'm not really the type to huff and puff... But this I've got to post, if only for the "entertainment value." Like most of us I ordered way back when and when I did, I gave a Stateside delivery address. Things changed a bit for me, however, and I phoned Customer Service to give a new delivery address, this one in Europe. The information was duly noted by the friendly representative. To make sure everything was in order, I called about a week after the first call to confirm, just to be on the safe side. And indeed the service representative had the new delivery address on hand. Well, as lots of Heads have been getting their boxes, and since I'm in Europe, I thought that I would give Customer Service a jingle to check up on the status, out of curiosity. The representative told me that the box was on its way to Europe, and he gave me a (UPS) tracking number just in case I wanted to check the status myself. Which I did. And what did I find? Well, that the box had been delivered yesterday. To the WRONG address. That is, the one back in the States. Naturally I wrote a note to the help desk when I found that out. And so at present I'm just listening to a bunch of shows from 1973, trying not to huff and puff....

being in the wholesale shipping business all I can say is that "exceptions suck" So if your CC was rejected or changed or your shipping address changed, all that stuff slows down the progress. Be chill & things will get straightened out. After all, its been 39 years, whats an extra week or so?

When I opened my boxed set, I had no Serial Number (which probably means that I wasnt in the top 2000 to order...not a concern). However, when I began to look at all the discs and the amenities and am concerned that I might have not received everything. There is a cloth pouch that had a hard covered book, a large black pamphlet titled "The Book of the Dead" that had a history of the Dead and the band members, plus a Europe 72 sticker. That was it. On the original picture back in March, it appeared like there was a map of Eurupe, possibly a replica ticket and other novelties that I didnt get in my boxed set. I did not get a packing slip and I havent seen online anywhere anything that states what should be included in the Box Set. Can anyone with a serialized set chime in here? PS: I love the designs on each CD set, each one is unique to that venue: I'm sure that someone (liquid blue, Dharma Rose, etc) will pick up on themerchandising opportunity and we will see T-s with those designs Michael E Phillips

I have no problem with the fact that changing the cc could have created a stir. With that said, having to call back, give them the new number 4 different times, and than to still be told that the number they have is invalid is beyond stupid. Heck, after I gave it to them the 2nd time, i called in to check to make sure it was still good, and the rep actually read the card number and expiration date back to me. So I actually thought they did have it, but now, I've had to call and give it to them 2 more times. Really, it's not even the fact that I've had to that, it's that no one can give me one shred of a reason about why this has been so screwed up. Really, if someone could give me an explanation, and I'm sorry this happened, and this is how the situation will be fixed, I'd be 100% OK. Right now, it's not about waiting another week to get this, it's about getting it fixed and being told why it will REALLY be done correctly this time. I don't think this is asking too much, but than again, maybe with who we are dealing with, being treated like a good customer is too much to ask.

I received the exact same items in my serial #d set (#1793/7200) - 2 books, 1 sticker and 22 shows. I too was expecting more swag.

I have been advised that the personalized sets, i.e. the first 3000, are numbered. The others are not.

i received my box set. Where do I find the number ______out of 7200? I admit I was expecting way more in the box too. Basically I found two books. The box itself is cool. There is a sticker on the outside of it. It is nice and organized when you open it up. I dont have time to play with it right now, but thought I would be seeing some more memorobilia in the box itself. I did not know what to expect, but I was expecting more little things. Someone mentioned a map, a ticket stub. Stuff like that would have been great. A guitar pick would have been super cool.

I am very pleased with everything except the CD sleeves. I have ripped every one so far. Usually disc 1 sleeve. Any ideas how to extract these without eventually destroying all the sleeves?

Just got mine as well - beautiful trunk for sure, but I too was expecting more in the way of swag. Got the 2 books, no sticker (as was previously mentioned by some), and the 22 shows. Also, the paper sleeve ripped down the seam getting the first disc out and I was specifically being careful (these are going to have to last - this trunk is inheritance material!). A little tape and I'm good, but still, I recommend being VERY careful. Anyway, most of the way through the first set and the mastering seems solid, though I'm going to dedicate some serious critical listening time tonight and many days to come :).

allman, you just beat me to it! Every one so far, huh? Looks like I'll be keeping the kids away from the sleeves (and just about everyone else as well).
