    Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this enormous box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

    This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

    Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

    Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

    So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

    More Sound Comparisons
    Currently working my way through ripping to iTunes in Apple lossless, and currently listening to Dark Star, from 2nd night at Wembley 4/8/72. Had to compare it to the version on 'Steppin' Out', and there are noticeable differences. Firstly, as somebody previously stated, Phil's Bass appeared to be more prominent in the mix, but this may be due to the extra clarity with the E72 version, and the further I got into the track the more natural it sounded. Another example is Cumberland Blues, from the same show. When I compare it to the 'Golden Road/Europe'72' version, there's a big difference in the vocal mix. Donna's voice is much more prominent in the earlier version. Again, the E72 version sounds more natural and has that extra clarity. Once they're all ripped, I going to try to listen to them in order ...... we'' see how long that last's, as I'm dying to hear the Lyceum shows again !

    Well, what can I say? My first language is Swedish, so obviously I don't know all the correct English words. There were TWO English words for the Swedish "pincett" and I thought nipper sounded just about exactly right, to nip a record out of it's sleeve! ^_ ^ Well, I turned to my old dictionary and it said 'tweezer' as the more accurate translation, so I guess you take a tweezer and twine (another new word to me) the squeezing end with plaster (I'm using textile plaster). wharfrat1: Well, you must be old fashioned and so am I ... :-D Micke

    Finally Finished
    I finally finished copying all of the CD's, scanning the covers, and ripping the discs into Itunes. I ripped them using the apple lossless codec all totaled the entire set came to a little over 24 gig's. I put all of the originals back in the steamer trunk, put the plastic bag on the trunk and placed it on my shelf where it will sit protected. The music is awesome.

I was working in my office on my day off an a little work project when the knock on the door came. I knew immediately what it was and the project was put on hold. I love the way it is boxed. Just absolutely beautiful to say the least. I have no complaints about it whatsoever. I am just about finished with the first show and I cannot wait to hear the rest of them. I want to thank the powers that made this happen. I am on board for the next release for certain. Give us some time though. Gonna take awhile to digest this one. Anyone on the fence for the All Music Edition should pull the trigger. The Music sounds AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey folks, I've found the best way to handle the cardboard sleeves is to: 1. Turn the CD case on its side so that the part where the CD's are stored is facing towards the ground. 2.Use your thumb and fingers to grip the sides, and give it a slight squeeze. 3. The CD pops right into your hand. I hope that makes sense...I know how to do it, but I'm doing a weak job of explaining it :) Also give it a squeeze when putting the disc back into place. Ok, I've got music to listen to :)

Chris_D, that was my exact approach and how I've handled paper sleeves in the past. When I did that with the first disc though, applying light pressure, the seam basically burst at the top with a 1" tear. Maybe I gripped too close to the opening (I was about a 1/4 of the way back from the opening). Either way, definitely fragile.

My experience is similar to Chris's. They are designed to be tilted as though they will roll out and then you grasp it. Not designed to reach into with your fingers and grasp. A great design,both ecologically and economically.

I just received my box today. Complete surprise. Like so many, had no idea it was shipped as there had been no CC charge yet. I know there are lots of complaints out there (always are), but I'm listening to disc 1 right now and the meat of what I purchased is there in all its high quality. Sure, I expected some more stuff to be in the box, but I don't personally need buttons and ticket stubs and the like. The books are great, the box itself is stellar, and the music is remarkable. I'm not a big fan of the cardboard sleeves used these days, but once you know how to "open" them (gently squeeze the sides), they work just fine and are made of recycled paper and better for the environment than jewel boxes (and, yes I know, cheaper to make). The only thing I would have liked to have seen included here is a DVD/Blu-ray of the Denmark show which we know is out there in unofficial circulation. I can't imagine that no one at Dead.net thought of this (since I and several others suggested it more than once in posts here :), but I will assume there are still some rights issues to be worked out on that one. Because there would certainly be no better time for that official release than in this box set. That would have made it comprehensive. But hopefully we'll see that show soon enough in its highest quality. And I'll be happy to buy that, too. For the time being, I have a gorgeous case, a couple of fun books, and 73 discs of extraordinary music engineered to perfection. To all responsible, thank you. And for those experiencing CC problems, communication problems, etc., I'm certain the folks at Dead.net and Rhino are overwhelmed. Like us, they too have lessons to learn. Sometimes the hard way. I know it's easy for me to say cause I have my box right here, but bear with them and I bet most of you will find your problems solved and a box in your home shortly. All of us are only human. Many (if not all) of the folks at Rhino are probably doing the absolute best they can under the circumstances. This was a big thing they created here. Far bigger than they anticipated and, obviously, prepared for. But what they got right they REALLY got right. Hopefully next time goes a bit smoother on both ends. Try, if possible, to work together on this. Even if you're feeling ignored or mistreated. At the end of the day, everyone's excited about this and wants it to bring joy, in whatever form that takes (music or money). Peace.

Box arrived today. The ladies I work with are now throughly convinced I need mental help. "You don't have enough Grateful Dead music already? You needed 73 more CDs ?" My reply was short and to the point..."Too much of everything is just enough!" Thank you to everyone involved in the production of this massive set. I will spend many years enjoying the music.

Like so many others, I was surprised to find this amazing package on my door this evening. No CC charges, e-mails or credit holds. Unfortunately, I won't be able to listen to this for awhile, as I trashed my beautiful Dahlquist speakers last weekend (by over-cranking the spectacular version of "Iko" on the bonus Reckoning CD #8 from the Beyond Description box set -- alcohol WAS a factor ;-), so it'll be a couple of weeks before my speakers get out of the audio hospital. Note to self...take better care of 21-year-old speakers! Nonetheless, I'm grateful to have this remarkable gift. My current thinking is to take a week off in September with the express intention of plowing through the entire 73-disc set in sequential order. 'Twould be almost like I was on tour with the boys 39 years ago... I've had a lot of problems getting Road Trips discs out of the cardboard packages, but for the few E'72 discs I've randomly extracted so far, they've all popped out gracefully, so hopefully that won't be an issue as reported by some others. To all who are still waiting for this amazing collection of music show up at their door, fret not...all good things in all good time, eh? Enjoy...

Am I the only one who hears (relatively) crappy sound quality on the first show? I'm no expert (although I have recorded audio for many years as a hobby) but the 4/7/72 discs are much more raw than I expected. At first, I attributed this to the need for some dialing-in of levels or whatever, but then I compared the Truckin' through Wharf Rat sequence with the same on Steppin' Out and I was really disappointed that these new mixes are far inferior. Does this problem continue through the entire box? I hope not! What is going on?? I emailed Lemieux but I expect no response since I am not being universally positive in my assessment. Let me say that the performances are off the charts -- completely amazing in every way.

Thanks for the suggestions on how to handle the ultra delicate CD covers. I was able to extract the CD's out of the next two CD's with no damage. However my first one is ripped. Hopefully my family and friends will know how flimsy they are and use TLC when handling them. I am all for environmentally friendly packaging but for $450 and the massive amount of cardboard the box was sent in that was not environmentally firiendly I think the CD covers can be better quality than this. What does everyone else think?

Unreal! I can't believe the box showed up today. I almost wet myself upon opening it up. Went randomly to the 100 Year Hall show, and checked out the Loser. So good. After sampling a few more tracks, I'm so glad I got in on this. Great sound, but still that Euro 72 sound if that makes any sense. I did think the box itself would be of better quality, but it's a small quibble, the presentation itself is quite nice. The hardcover book is very well done, I think. I can't believe I now have every note of every show from Europe '72. Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible. I can hardly wait to settle in and really begin to savor the complete shows. What I'm hearing right now is awesome! (the 100 Year Hall show compares favorably sound-wise with the 1995 release, btw. Next I'm anxious to compare the Rheinhalle show to the Rhino 2004 release)

I wish a could write a positive message but, thats sadly not the case. how could the other "4200" get burned with no limited edition numbering. that makes me sick of course it is all about the music but not numbering all 7200 is bullshit. thats a Dead no pun intended give away that more than 7200 were produced. rhino doesnt give a fuck about deadheads. rhino straight up sucks balls. there was a reason why the dead got away from warner bros. their shady theives. believe me I have alot more shadyiness I can go on about. eat shit warner bros. I to am doing to the jumping through hoops shit like many other of my fellow heads. I never get on here to complain but there are alot of peeps here getting the bend over jobs here. the delivery confirmination is more extremely important to some than others I know many fellow heads know what i am saying Its obvious that nothing is changing with poor customer service through rhinos dirty hands 9 months to plan logistics and it gets totally fucked up truely sad. Im done venting for now. that being said thanks to all the people who have had theirs hearts in the right place it really is appreciated, thanks dave glasser, and jeff norman for all your hard work on this project on all their past and future projects as well,I look forward to one day finally reaping the benefits of your hard work. After this Dead.net/ rhino very well may be losing yet another loyal customer not that they give two shits. this is in no way directed to the people who work very hard to straighten out cluster fucks such as this giant. nothing left to do but cry cry cry : ( long gone are the days of old.

Dude That is a pretty harsh rant over not getting a numbered box. Filled with profane comments that no one wants to read. Get a grip. At least you credited some of those that worked hard but if not for Rhino, this release would have never happened. They took the chance that we would want it and they were right. I think you should rethink your position because you are way out of line. I dont believe they sold more than 7200 and if they did, who cares? Obviously some do but unless you were planning on profiting, be happy that you got this amazing piece of history. Numbered or not, it is still awesome

...they DID number all 7200. Mine says "0155 out of 7200." Not 3000. The first 3000 got personalized ~ the name of their choice printed on the baggage inspection tag sticker. And it was advertised that way from the beginning. If you're going to criticize something, especially that harshly, please do your research and know what you're criticizing. Looks like my earlier exuberant "Omigosh....it's here!!!!" message never posted. Oh, well ~ I'm still exuberant. This is incredible, and I haven't even heard a note of it yet. As for the swag complaints....really??? That Lyceum booklet ain't good enough for ya (how many of us ever knew THAT existed)? Interview w/ Pigpen mid-tour, are you kidding? And geez, there's a world map on the inside of the trunk ~ does anyone really need a foldout Europe map? The photo book is so beautiful ~ all the pictures you've always loved and so many more you've never seen! Thanks so much. Really feeling the love gaping through this package. And like others, was completely blind-sided to find this at the back door when I came home tonight!

...re-reading Marye's message. But, again, my sticker sure makes it appear that 7200 were numbered. But gr8tefulfan, I'd defy you to look at this box and tell me Rhino doesn't care about their fans. This is the best box set ever.

Unneccessary rants aside, mine is the full box, not just the music, and it's NOT numbered anywhere noticeable or special. Unless....On the back of each show, at the bottom, in the first line of credits (second line on each show says 2011 GD productions, all rights reserved, etc), MINE says GRA2-6023. Does this mean mine is #6023 of 7200? Can someone else check theirs, and say whether or not yours also says 6023, in which case I'm wrong, OR does the number that's there after GRA2- correspond to what your limited edition number is? Dying to know this. It seems only the first 3000 are explicitly numbered from what everyone's been saying; the remaining 4200 aren't, and, no, that makes no sense, but what would the Dead be without a little inexplicable nonsense? Still seems like only 7200 of the full box were made. Can't wait to listen to the Bremen tv show disc, as that looks awesome. This whole things ROCKS, aside from the mysterious numbering of the sets, i think packaging is great. YES, you have to be careful squeezing the discs out so ya don't rip the sleeves...

Naw, RS, I've got the same number GRA2-6023 on the back of mine, too.(?) I'm gradually learning the technique to fish out the discs from the sleeves, it just takes practice, disc one always seems the hardest. Maybe over the years, with heavy use, the sleeves will soften up. I've listened to most of 4/7 and the dark stars 4/14 and 4/24. They all sound beautiful to me, maybe even a more "natural" sound than earlier Rhino releases, but I am far from an audiophile... Congratulations and thank to all involved with this!

Thanks, russellvarga. Well, that's weird. If they decided to make only 7200 boxes, with all the trimmings, you'd think they would have numbered ALL 7200 of them, and not just the first 3000 that could be personalized. I don't believe there is any "scam" involved here, and they really made more than 7200; it's just...how is the customer supposed to know that? They all should have been numbered! (As, so far as I know, all the Fillmore west '69 sets were numbered, mine was 0677 of 10,000) Kind of a stupid mistake to make, especially on a $450 box. Aside from that, though, I'm stoked. Kinda want to spread the listening of this out, so that 20 years from now I'll have heard it all. Know I won't last that long though...

One more question: The only "receipt" that came with mine was this sticker that's got my name, address, and an Order# on it, saying 1 of 1 units, and a thank you for ordering message, etc. My order number is eighteen characters, starting with N and ending in 2. Question: Can someone out there who has a limited edition number confirm if they got one of these stickers, AND tell me if their limited edition number is embedded in this long-ass 18 character Order #? It's a long shot, but if it is, then say so, as that must be what your number is. This is annoying me now; wanna know what my number is!!!

The sticker reciept that I recieved doesn't have my box number on it, which is 1253/7200. Not even in the order#. It does have my personalization printed acrossed the top which reads "Property of ****my name****".

SBrother-Really annoying since i'm sure they only made 7200 complete boxes, but for some reason only numbered the first 3000. (Probably because, when ya think about it, they had said they were only going to go ahead with the whole project if they got 3000 committed orders at $450 a pop, remember that? So, they had prob. already told the printer/art producers/whoever the 3000 number, hence, when they sold out the 7200 orders in 3-5 days, 3000 was the number those guys had. Hence, 7200 boxes made, but only the first 3000 actually numbered. That's my guess, anyway). It's just annoying, cause I'd like to know what number mine was. If Blair Jackson or any of other "celebrity" heads are readin' this and could clear it up, please do so.... That said, can't believe how tasty this is! I even had the whole O1>El Paso>O1 jam from the first night on tour from the Steppin out album, and I don't know, forgot how awesome it is.....

I wrote earlier asking where to find my serial number only to find out the first 3000 only have them. If that's the case I will be getting my money back. There is no way I'm spending all that money to have something many other people have. You're right it is about the music but I thought I would be buying something not a lot of other people would have thus making it unique. This set was also described and advertised as such and if that is not the case money should be returned. How can you tell me I have a limited edition set when you can't give me any actual proof that I indeed do. Filmore sets seemed to be able to all have limited edition numbers so why not these. I hope it's not for the reason I think, because it is in actuality limited to anyone willing to pony up $ 450.

Oh boy. Some of us around the world are still patiently waiting for our boxes to arrive you know and we have to read this stuff about wanting something noone else has. Well I don't have it yet..does that make you feel better? Why not quit worrying and just listen to the damn thing (Did someone not once say 'If you get confused listen to the music play???). Or sell it on ebay for a juicy profit if its not exclusive enough. Sure the numbering thing appears to be (yet another) screw up, but if all you want is a number then I hereby award you number 7200..a damn cool number I would say. Feeling better?

Getting your money back because there is no serial number, REALLY? By all means send it back. This way some deserving fan can get this set. And not enough "swag", REALLY? I honestly do not need newspaper clippings or ticket stubs. Having a box to keep this massive set in is enough for me. This set comes out to less than 6 dollars a CD when the box, books, shipping box, and shipping are factored in. Listen to the music and be happy that this is available. The music industry could only be pumping out Rap Crap. Keep this up and they just might.

That's not the point, cosmicbadger, as should be pretty obvious. (And if you ordered one, congrats, relax, it'll come). The point is (or should be) truth in advertising. chkj11-if you really want a refund, you'll probably be able to get one. They'd easily resell it. I think that's a little drastic. For the record, I don't think there's any crazy "conspiracy", especially since people here on this board who got one from the first 3000 have said specifically that they have #'s that say, for ex., 54 of 7200, or 101 of 7200, etc., and not just 55 with no number of the whole run. That tells me clearly only 7200 complete boxes were made, (the rest will be just the CDs with the sleeves), but for whatever stupid f***in' reason, they only numbered the first 3000. (Otherwise, they're completely lying, and that's very against my history of relations with GDP. YMMV) Bottom line for me is, I'm stoked I got the complete box, and not just the music, but for $450 they should have gotten the bloody numbers right, and just for anal retentive deadhead reasons, I really, Really, REALLY wanna know what number mine is. All that said, guess I'm gonna have to quit work fer day, as I've been up all night listening!!! (Thankfully my job is mellow and this is easy-:)) The Bremen German TV show rips! Can't believe they were that good with no audience (or virtually no audience) as Blair Jackson says..... God, I love the GD....

.....personalized big beautiful box. Managed to clear the decks and listened to all of 4/7. Good God is the playing good! It's going to take a while to get through this - do I move on to the next show, or go back and listen to the hot show I just heard? What a tough choice to have....NOT. I love the artwork for each individual show. Great job to all involved - the sound quality is off the charts. I'll resurface again in about 3 months. See ya!

Got my numbered box earlier in the week. A few comments: 1. After tearing the first two cases, I've now mastered the "pinch" technique -- thanks for the advice on that! 2. I was also surprised, and a little disappointed, that there wasn't more stuff in the box. No, I don't really "need" a ticket stub, backstage pass, button, or guitar pick, but I've always liked it when those things have been included in past releases. Beyond that, I believe the original announcement about this set promised "tour ephemera" would be included, and I'm not sure a single sticker really qualifies. 3. The box itself looks really nice, but it's definitely a "handle with care" item that appears to be made out of cardboard. I'd be surprised if the hinges stay intact after a few years. 4. Most importantly, the sound of the first 3 shows I've listened to is stunning. To have the complete tour in this quality is well worth the price of admission. 5. What I like most about this release so far is it makes a great case for complete releases. Obviously, there are some GD shows that are flawless from start to finish, but most are not, including many exceptional performances. The cut and paste releases like HYH, Steppin' Out, E72, etc. contain only flawless performances. I get the reason behind that. However, I think it's nice to have a realistic reference point -- the band often stumbled, and far from detracting from the music or their ability, I think the occasional struggles serve only to highlight just how magnificent the band could play at times. There is nothing like seeing a mediocre musician perform to make you appreciate a real master who seems to do everything flawlessly and effortlessly. Sorta the same thing with the Dead. Despite the initial rave reviews, none of the first three shows on this tour are flawless. There are many miscues, people falling into the wrong key, extended "solos" that really are just Jerry or Bob trying to tune their guitar (and having a tough time of it), etc. Each of those shows also is great. Bottom line: I like a more realistic representation of the Band's music -- warts and all! Like pretty much everything, some things could have been done different with this, but in general I'm quite pleased -- THANKS to all involved! PS -- this will take a while to digest: please hold off on releasing the Wall Of Sound boxed set for awhile.... : )

Really?! Hell, I supposedly have a personalized, numbered version coming. That's if the 4 times I had to give a new cc# actually take. I wouldn't know if it did, because customer service has never called or emailed me like they said they would. When I do call, all I get, is we have to send this up the chain, and I can't tell you any more than that. So, I come on here and see people whining about numbers. Just be happy you have the damn box in your hands. I know, maybe I wait an extra week, maybe two, but you know damn well, if one of you with the box were in the shoes of some of us who can't even get a simple explanation about what is going on from customer service, you'd be pretty pissed. So as my old friend Steve Kimock would say, STFU, and listen to the music. Really, that's all I'd like to be doing right now.

Hey noy, My Boxed Set arrived at my door yesterday, much to my surprise, I was expecting another week or two. Happy listening to all, I'm excited!! Wouldn't it be cool if the next boxed set was East Coast Spring Tour '77 - some already released, as in the Euro 72 tour, but what a box from Philly to Hartford up down and around... The faster we go the rounder we get!!

i have no special knowledge of these matters but i would think they'd have to make a few extra sets to make up for those that do get lost or damaged in shipping etc. with that in mind numbering all of them would be problematic, i was slightly interested to see how close i was to #7200 (and i know im close) but i can let that go however it is true that the fillmore w. 69 set was numbered all the way (mine is over 9900) so that is not consistent with my theory

Agree Billj79, but I would bet against it. I emailed DL about looking at possible runs for future box sets a few years ago, and he said that for the bigger releases, they really only want to focus on shows that were multitracked. Now I know that Winterland '73 and '77 were not, but obviously Warlocks and this one are. My guess is we'll probably get something from '89 or '90. I guess we can always hold out hope. I've got 90% of the shows from Spring '77, but I would love to have them in Norman and Glasserized versions.
