Europe '72: The Complete Recordings - All The Music Edition

    Europe '72:
    The Complete Recordings -
    All The Music Edition

Our Europe '72 boxed set is now officially sold out, with all 7,200 boxes now gone! We can't thank you enough for your support, for having faith in the project and taking the plunge to purchase this unprecedented release. Despite the fact that it's going to be a bit of a wait before it arrives on your door step, we are sure you'll be blown away with the results.

We are now offering the All-The-Music edition of Europe '72, which includes all of the music recorded on the tour, with each show in its own individual package, complete with its own liner notes by Dead scholars such as David Gans, Blair Jackson, Steve Silberman, Gary Lambert and others, as well as by attendees of some of the shows. You'll get 73 CDs and over 70 hours of prime Grateful Dead.

    IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC...

Because you dared dream this might happen one day… Because you went down to the Gypsy Woman and offered up your first-born to try to make it happen… Because there are enough passionate Dead Heads at Rhino/GD who thought it might be cool for this to happen… It’s happening! Coming in September is a gargantuan EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping and clearly cosmic 73 DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this enormous box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

    Blame the Dead part 2
What I'm saying is when Jerry was alive the band took a more active role on what was marketed on their behalf. The book and magazine enclosed are high quality. If the other stuff that was supposed to be enclosed was actually there it would have made the box set a true classic. The Europe 72 map that was in the pre-production picture would have been really nice to have.

Jackstraw by saying that Jerry wouldn't have allowed this to happen you're implying that the remainder couldn't care less ! DEAD.NET is a business and it's doubtful that the Band would have been for closely involved in anything outside the music, if that. As for pre-order stuff. I ordered the same way as the Filmore set - whats on the discs. I had no real idea of what was going to be delivered as long as the concerts were there. And they are

with a thud and a pounding on the door at 7:03. Chubby little sweet thing. I yelled, "thank you, thank you!". She/he was gone. Whether or not they heard me I know not. Whether or not they had any idea of what they were delivering this day I know not. I wish whoever it was that they did have some knowledge of what they were a part of.

...is how easy and natural the transition was from collecting shows to collecting tours. Just got #393/7200 and am blissed...this could get expensive... But once again I'm left with: God bless the Grateful Dead!

Show 1, disc 1 ~ my car soundtrack ~ is so spirited. And already several of those wonderful "little" moments David L talks about in his essay. The last flourishes of Keith's "Chinatown Shuffle" solo, for one......Phil's descending bass about halfway through Jerry's "Loser" solo (where "on the inside strait" would be sung)...and his mid-range harmony on the "last fair deal" chorus that immediately follows.....the three-round guitar solo in "Beat It On Down the Line" (where Pigpen's audible organ also hearkens back to the early versions)....and Billy's drums throughout. Wonderful ChinaCat->Rider. Hello, London! Hello, Europe! Hello Europe '72 box set! This sounds GREAT in the car, by the way.

into Not Fade Away is something every fan of the Dead should experience. The last show alone is worth the $450 price of admission alone. Then as great Dead does it grows....if this continues as I work backwards thru the tour, on the backs of those who have produced this incredible work I might be able to forgive the Dick Head who who decided 4200 limited edtion boxes would not be numbered. He will never have the balls to say, "It was my decision for this reason."

The Lyceum souvenir booklet may only be one surprise, but what a super one, and a genuine artifact (wonder how many of these existed till this reprint?). Not as cutely tactile, perhaps, as a button or ticket replica, but a higher caliber of "extra" compared to anything else that's come in the boxes I've purchased. Have disc 1 in my computer ~ hearing it again! ~ as I type this, and Jerry's finale sizzle out of "left his dead ass there by the side of the road" on Me and My Uncle goes off the tracks but ends in a smug place (like a catcher mischievously lifting a gutter pitch into the strike zone in an attempt to fool the umpire ; ) Or, perhaps, like the murdering nephew is making a loud, sloppy getaway from the scene of his crime....! A Tivoli bonus DVD was always wishful thinking, and they're to be had without too much trouble anyway. If a head just happened to have one ; ) it could be easily tucked into the box with the book & booklet. Blair (or someone's essay) notes that, sadly, there isn't any more visual footage than what already circulates.....no lost film of Caution : ( Really liking the "key" page at the end of the big book that lists all the shows, all the songs, then which shows they were played at. You can see at a glance what was really rare, or what was unique to earlier or later in the tour. Thanks to whoever that was above for the tip on propping the trunk lid for longer longevity. (Of course, I let mine hit the ground with a thud when I first opened it!)

cbs73: Cool! thnx for link. That looks VERY cool; I'm jealous. (Yes, it's music that matters, but still) So does yours say "There is nothing like a GD concert" because that's what you said you wanted? Really wish I could've gotten one of those numbered labels, with or without the personalization.... The weird thing is, if there are only 7200, wouldn't the remaining 4200 kinda HAVE to be numbered somewhere, either in the book, or on the box, just for manufacturing purposes? Maybe that question makes no sense...just thought that was always the case with anything made in a limited run,-each unit was always numbered. Can't complain though, because I only got one after emailing and being told there had been cancellations. I was all set to have to settle for music only, and it was same price.

There is a difference between pointing out legitimate expectations and complaining. I'm on disc 3 of the last show. It "sounds" incredible!!!! I am totally loving it!!! The info is now Track 01 and the time !!!!! Think about it I really do not know a whole lot about this tech shit, what I see is hours of getting things straightened so I can create play lists. Being able to get it on my ipod in a organized fashion, to be able to create CD's to play in my vehicle while I drive.....am I missing something?

Costumer Service doesn`t even answer my mails, they give me no bleeding information at all, I`m getting a little bit pissed. I`m sure it`s not that hard to sent an e-mail providing information. I´m only asking for the damned tracking number, for God´s sake! Or at least, a mail saying: sorry, kid, your set was not dispatched yet. And, by the way, I'm one of the "lucky ones" that managed to buy one of the first 3200 boxes. Furthermore, many assholes that only bought it for reselling it throught Ebay had their boxes delivered, as far as I can see. I'm usually satisfied with the service here, but this time, as FZ would sing on "Freak Out!": "I'M NOT SATISFIED".

Just finished listening through Wembley (4/7), and love what I hear! Since this release is a “Limited Edition”, I was also expecting that each box set would have been individually numbered, just as it was done with the Fillmore West '69 set. Some of my fun was taken away; I was counting on receiving 7200 of 7200. Possibly Dead.net and Rhino could still make good on this by just issuing the labels after the fact. Print the labels for sets #3001-#7200, and mail them to the appropriate purchasers in the order that the box sets were purchased. Just a thought.

S.O.O.S-I think that's an excellent idea, and it would sincerely make a difference to me. Like I said earlier, it's the anal retentive deadhead in me; I simply gots to know my number! It would be pretty easy for them to do....The whole thing for me is, do THEY even know whose was whose for the 4200 of #3001-#7200? Cause if they do, I WANNA KNOW! Information, #1! Another thing I think they should have done was limit one per customer, so they wouldn't end up on ebay. (or if not one, certainly no more than three per household/mailing address). As much as I love the Dead, I wouldn't pay $1,000 or more for this, just on principle alone. I never sold a ticket to heads for more than face value and I wouldn't pay double or triple or more for a box set. If I could've personalized mine I would've chosen the classic "Who are the GD and why do they keep following me?" Its always said it all for me ;)

Now that my trunk has arrived and I have gotten to form my own opinion on the whole matter, I feel my teacher's salary well spent!! The trunk is awesome. My wife and kids were very surprised about the effort they put into the trunk layout and design!! The intricate map design on the inside is very nice. If I could say one thing about the whole matter is do not make any more limited edition shows limited. I think everyone should be able to enjoy the books-which are worthy of a coffee table-and the trunk to house the cds. I think everyone involved in this project should be very proud of the product they have produced!! I want to personally thank Mary for helping me out when all the hoolpa was going on and no codes were coming through!! By they way, your photos look awesome. I bet you have some stories of your own to tell about the E72 tour!! Here is to many hours of happy listening-CHEERS

Want a treat? Try show #7 first, the single disc. Nice Bobby intro to the whole package. Lots of antics, false starts, etc. 2x Playing's unless I was asleep or something. Kick-ash Other One. To open the box, set it on the table with the handle grip up and open like a book. The short side holds the books and has a cardboard spacer to keep them in. Good tips about gently squeezing the middle of the sleeves to get the discs to drop out. The discs themselves should have been numbered consecutively down the left side, then down the right. Because the disc spines were printed to form a rainbow, top to bottom, its not an option to rearrange the discs in the 1-11 left 12-22 right format, unless you like quadrant rainbows. Would have been a good idea to choose songs or lyrics from songs that were played on this tour for customization; some nice band members and other E72 customizations out there. Agree, send us all certs for the non-customized ones, even if they are just blank customized labels (some of the first 3k sets have blank customized labels!) When thinking about these sets on eBay I try to expand from just how a double-the-price purchase affects me or my wallet - you might owe someone a favor from another life, and be paying it off, or just really helping someone out who needs it at this moment. I try to find a way to see that its all good and its easy to find that way! Also, you can usually tell the vendors from the fans if you look at them right. This is way more fun than getting everything on one 64GB microSD chip, though that might be the .wav of the future! Hey drmlabs - resize your (cool but large) AVITAR! Cheers, laser

oh my - it's just too cool for words - the sound is just fantastic - this is truly the band at its peak. and on a related note, in these days of mp3 files as a way of "having" music, it feels great to own this box as a physical artifact. it was put together with great love - that's clear with every detail. now if I could only just vanish into a cave with great speakers for the next month...

My audio advisors don't recommend going the DVD route. I found the last 7 or 8 MusicHall cd35.2 players in the country via email blasts to all the listed dealers (no HDCD indicator on the display, but has the circuit and is under $800 with scientific transport, mixed reviews). These same audio advisors recommend a separate transport (example below, $1k) played through a Berkeley Audio Alpha DAC (moderate in the very expensive range - $5k) or one of the other DACs ($3k - $10k) w/separate transport. The Berkeley Alpha has an HDCD indicator light. Cables are extra and need to be selected with as much care as the unit, at this level. http://www.gcaudio.com/cgi-bin/store/showProduct.cgi?id=650 http://www.gcaudio.com/cgi-bin/store/showProduct.cgi?id=718 The NAD M5 has an HDCD indicator, is an integrated CD player, and is in the $1300 to $1800 range, new, depending on the individual dealer. http://nadelectronics.com/products/cd-players/M5-CD-SACD-Player Also, see my previous post about Windows Media Player. You have to adjust some settings to turn on the HDCD parser, btw. Cheers, laser

I've been patiently waiting for my personalized set. I did update my address a month ago, but credit card is unchanged and pre-authorization went thru quite a while ago. I started calling this week when sets were showing up around the country and I hadn't gotten anything. Each (smug) customer service person I spoke to said that if there was a problem, I would have received an email, if it had been mailed I would have received an email, blah blah blah. I explained that virtually *everyone* who posted on dead.net did not have an experience that mirrored what they were saying would happen. I finally called up yesterday, got a little huffy with the customer service rep, explained that I would get a different answer every time I called (true) and that none of the answers were consistent with info read here. I was about to bother Mary E, but figured I'd make a stink on the phone and wait to be connected to someone who actually knew what was going on. This person said she would check "up the line" and try to get me an answer later that day about why a previous CS rep had said my account was flagged for some credit card issue. She actually *did* call back, and said that the address change had slowed the process because they had already printed mailing labels before they sent the email about confirming credit card and address info. I now have the slightly warm feeling that my set will actually be sent to my correct address, and may actually be sent in relatively short order. My point: either get Mary E involved or go up the chain if when you call the CS person just says "wait for emails." When you have $450 invested in this for 6-8 months and they have had as many problems as they have had, you deserve coherent answers. It truly is hard to believe for a sale of 7,200 units that they could bungle this in so many ways.

I received my set promptly but with no sticker (therefore no indication of which number). The music, the sound and the packaging are beautiful! However, having seen scans of numbered boxes, I think it's pretty lame to number sets 0001/7200 through 3000/7200 or wherever they stopped numbering. It clearly implies there's a 4217/7200, to pick a random number for instance and so on... It would be nice to know which one I have but alas, the music is what truly matters...

Got home from work today and saw mine setting on the front door... with a big 'ol hole in the shipping box. Reading through the previous posts I thought for sure it would be damaged, it wasn't. Listing to the first cd now. Why is Big Boss Man not complete?? It fades out at 4:38 WTF??? Did I miss something here??? Is this not the complete recording? Trippin a bit on this. The quality of the recordings is A+++ Truly amazing but why is some songs (i am only on disc one) cut? I'm gonna get me a boss man, one gonna treat me right, I work hard in the daytime, sure get drunk at night

I just had a brainstorm: I'm gonna invent some special padded tweezers to get the discs out of the sleeves safely and easily. I'll make a fortune!

Yes, the complete recordings, not the complete concerts. Not everything got recorded, unfortunately. Without looking I don't know if they could have filled in the gaps from AUDs or other sources. Presumably they would have tried like they did in patching the other complete recording boxes (a patch on 3/2/69 in the last disc sticks in my mind).

My set arrived Monday, 8/29 (2398/7200). Here's the history... Ordered in January... (lucky to be an early, personalized order). In July, I called and changed the cc info as the card had expired and wanted the charge to go through on a separate account where I had the $450 set aside. They took the new info. August 19, a $450 hold hits the old, expired card. Sits in pending until 8/29, then wipes out to $0.00. The card I wanted to use is never hit, and still at $0.00. Boxed set arrives 8/29 in the evening after a neighbor delivers it. UPS delivers to the wrong address. I'm now holding $900 aside since I don't know which card is eventually going to be hit. 4.7.72 sounds incredible. Eating noodles until Rhino charges me. Worth it. scarletbgonias

In the liner notes of "Steppin Out" it says Band introduction by Sam Cutler. And in the Box Set liner notes to 4/8/72, contains the quote which begins 4/7, credited to Sam Cutler. Not very thorough on my part to miss this (twice). It's the greatest release ever!!!- I certainly got that right

Love reading the posts regarding this set, sounds amazing. I had a personalized code, after I realized that I could never fully appreciate the magnitude of this set. I have too much to listen too already. I am thoroughly enjoying September 72 right now, and am looking forward to jamming out on the MSG 90 stuff. I also finished up 9/3/77 today. Too many good shows from too many good eras to get bogged down in this set. I will order the new 2-disc release, and I feel like I will have a very nice selection of the Europe 72 stuff (13 discs or so of material). Anyway, keep up the fun postings! Just remember, Rhino and GDM, not all of us are capable of purchasing something like this, so keep putting out quality shows for us serfs.

can they send out numbered stckers to attach to the box for those that missed out on the first 3000? Wouldn't cost too much relative to how much they've taklen for these boxes.

I just want to say thanks to the person who scanned the artwork and put it on the Picasa site. I don't have my box yet - I'm in France, and I think it'l going to take a while - but this is going to save a lot of time when I get the discs and rip them.

First of all THANKS to GDP/Rhino for a wonderful set, I am very happy with what I got and hope you do more of these extended run sets, i'm thinking spring 1990 from the multitracks or Boston 1991 from the DSBDs. If you do, here's some hints on how to do better it next time. Don't offer it for presale before you know exactly whats going to be in the box. Most of the disappointment I have heard isn't for what's in the box, its what people speculated on for 8 months based on the info last january. The fact it turned into 73 CDs instead of the original 60 cut into your margin, which you will obviously recoup with the music only versions for the same price. The 8 months of hype aboout the mystery goodies and tour ephemera, the misleading photo of ephemera and the sketch of a box that barely resembles what came in the mail is a huge problem, because you made us think that was going to be in the box. If you had just had a photo of the outside of the box and then put in the beautiful hard cover book, UK program replica and the sticker most people would have been more than happy at what they got. In the end the personalization was pretty lame, and you should have just stuck the individually numbered "inspected by" sticker in all 7200 of the boxes and let the person that got the box write in their own name. When you promise a numbered box, you should deliver one, if not, that is false advertising. Seeing how only the 1st 3000 got numbered I suggest we start a database of the rest of the boxes. I have already used my sharpy to number the GD sticker that covers split and claim 3001 of 7200. Just as a minor note, this is not the best box set ever, I would have to give that to the ABB Instant Live 2004 tour box that had every show of the summer tour along with a couple real unused tickets and backstage passes... in a numbered mini replica of the Fillmore East equipment cases and that was $700. So in the end the Europe 72 Complete box is fantastic and has some great bonus stuff compared to the Music only version. I'm very happy with what I got, but it is not what I thought i was preordering for 8 months ago.

Actually, they could send out numbered stickers very easily to all of us. They could email each of a a .pdf using our original order numbers as guidelines and we could always print the stickers ourselves. Staples or any office supply store sells adhesive printer paper that the .pdf could be printed onto from our home printers. It may not be the best way but it's a possible option.

I understand the disappointment in not getting a numbered box or other items. Things are not as they were advertised in the beginning. But I bought this for the music and it sounds great to my ears. I can't listen to a numbered sticker or a road map of Europe. Consider yourself lucky that you have the means to purchase this set. Many people would love to be in your shoes. It Is What It Is - Zen.

you would wait days and weeks for the 3 or 4th generation tapes of shows to arrive at your home through the mail (that usually did not sound THAT good). Everyone that has received this box (myself included)...stop and take a second and think...YOU HAVE THE ENTIRE EUROPE 72 TOUR in pristine sound in at your fingertips. Think back twenty years and then remember what you now have in your hands. The pictures in January may have been misleading regarding whats included and your box may not be personalized but it really is about the music. Not a rant, just an observation after reading 20 or 30 pages of people upset about not having a signed box!

The only CD player I currently have is in my car. The 72 box CD's sound fine in my car (09 Escape with Premium sound system) although with all this talk about HDCD players could it sound even better?! Not up to date on CD players. Any suggestions on HDCD player or are most new ones capable?
