    Europe '72:
    The Complete Recordings -
    All The Music Edition

Our Europe '72 boxed set is now officially sold out, with all 7,200 boxes now gone! We can't thank you enough for your support, for having faith in the project and taking the plunge to purchase this unprecedented release. Despite the fact that it's going to be a bit of a wait before it arrives on your door step, we are sure you'll be blown away with the results.

We are now offering the All-The-Music edition of Europe '72, which includes all of the music recorded on the tour, with each show in its own individual package, complete with its own liner notes by Dead scholars such as David Gans, Blair Jackson, Steve Silberman, Gary Lambert and others, as well as by attendees of some of the shows. You'll get 73 CDs and over 70 hours of prime Grateful Dead.

    IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC...

Because you dared dream this might happen one day… Because you went down to the Gypsy Woman and offered up your first-born to try to make it happen… Because there are enough passionate Dead Heads at Rhino/GD who thought it might be cool for this to happen… It’s happening! Coming in September is a gargantuan EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping and clearly cosmic 73 DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this enormous box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

    Go Pig!
Yes, Yes, Yes! Pig rocks on these shows. I love his organ! Every time I hear a post Pig other one, I still wait for his little flourishes after Bobby sings "Spanish Lady comes to me...". E72 is unfreakingbelieveable! Wish they would have mixed up the setlists a little more, but you can tell they were going for a strong live album

Thoroughly enjoyed your discourse. May have been a bit too civilized for my personal taste but enjoyable none the less! Really enjoying the music even more now. First time thru was mostly thru earbuds off my laptop of ipod. Without realizing there was this subtle pressure to get on to the next show and hear what it sounded like. Now I'm burning shows, at random, to cd and listening to them on the car stereo as I drive around during the day.I find myself going, "Wow, that was just excellent I got to listen to that again!" And I do. Concertgebouw, Olympia Theater 05-03, Dusseldorf, have had multiple listens over the last two weeks. It's great realizing that Pigpen is in the mix here and there with his flourishes on organ. Listening to Keith coming into his own. I think you can even see why they thought Donna would be a good addition to the mix ;-). So much great music to explore.

I ordered for the music. Didn't care about a map, tickets, poster or whatever else was promised. I also can have a 5 year old print out a map of Europe, replica tickets, or a poster off the internet but I don't really need that stuff. I rarely look at the stuff that came with the Warlocks box (actually only looked at it once). I am just glad to have a box to store this huge collection of music in. Just can't make some people happy. Some personalities always want more, more, and more. Now for the people who have not received theirs yet, that is a different story. We all know things get messed up around here. I think everyone hopes the next big release will run smoother, but it never does.

Lucky you! I called ICA Supermarket to check if they had recieved a such packet but they said they need a certain code. I called dead.net customer service a couple of minutes ago to get a correct parcelnumber. They gave me almost the same number as in the shipping confirmation mail. Almost but three digits longer. I tried to call Schenker now but was five minutes too late. They had already closed for today. At the dead.net Customer Service they knew nothing about a place to pick it up. They said it will be delivered to my door. I hope not, since I live in neighborhood where it will most likely disappear before I get home. But we'll see tomorrow if I'll finally get it ... Micke

I agree that we were somewhat led astray. I had the impression that there would be a bunch of swag in the box, other than the book and booklet. However, I'd have paid for the book if it were sold separately. The trunk itself is nothing special; it's quaint, but it's not essential. If it had been the music and the books, I'd have been happy enough.

You are not alone bro. Here is my daily routine: 1. Wake up 2. Make coffee 3.Get my daughter up and ready for school 4. Call dead.net to fix/update my order/credit card/address 5. Hang up the phone and wonder if these people know what they are doing 6. Bang my head on the wall and wonder how can anyone run a business like this?? 7. Dowse my head in ice water to numb the pain 8. Go to work 9. Prepare for the next day's phone call "I won't take your life won't even take a limb just unload my shotgun and take a little skin"

Wahlgrenwilson ..... well that link did not appear to help at all (although I see it is correct), so I decided to google GLS tracking, and found a real tracking option. So I put in the reference that came with my 'official' shipping notice from Dead.net. No good ! So I went back to the email I received the day before that from customer services, which had a different number, entered that, and presto ... I found my parcel ! So on the 9th it was in the Netherlands, and today, the 13th, it's still in the Netherlands (actually it says 'outbound from GLS location' so that sounds as though it's actually moving), so let's hope gets here pretty quick now.

I changed my c/c expiration date via phone in July or so and I think it took. Got the shipping notice on Sept. 8th that my order had shipped Sept. 1st (to BC interior) and to allow 12 days for delivery. Tracking # indicated it cleared customs on Sept. 6th. Still waiting (which isn't that unusual -- I find their deliveries usually take a few days longer than allowed days for shipping).

I email them back with another address- no confirmation. I email again, nothing. I try to call and am on hold for 40 min, no one answers, no voicemail... Mine arrived safely yesterday. Is it just coincidence that my personalised number incorporates a double-eight? Thank you so much to everyone involved who made this happen. Two days ago I was listening to Chris Jones' audience recording from the 5/24/72 Lyceum concert recorded on his crappy mono Pye cassette recorder - it was dire but it was all we had until now. Having Chris Jones write the liner notes to the newly released version of that show was a nice touch. Now, for my next request: How about the 6-night run at Capitol Theatre, Port Chester NY February 18th thru 24th 1971?

I have loaded the entire collection to my HD and have it all on my 80GB Ipod, been jamming all day. I only have one problem, one skip on one CD. It skipped on "Deal" the first time I played it. Of course I tried to call customer service, man that was a joke. No one picked up, and when I tried to leave a message it terminated the call? I did PM Marye, she is going to handle it for me. I just need the one CD replaced. I have enough to keep my jamming. Sorry to hear that some folks are still waiting, hopefully everyone will have theirs by the weekend. Coconut Phil, living Free.

If you're in Europe, it's easier to call dead.net Customer Service international phone number +1 410.568.3715. Then you have to press 2, while listening to the message, and then they will probably answer more or less right away. You need the correct tracking number. You have the first eleven digits and just need another three and then you'll have the correct number. Then follow the advises in wahlgrenwilsons comment to how I should do to locate my package. Hope that will help! Good luck! Micke

Hi All.. Looking forward to the box set like everybody else. got 2 coming my way, a personalized one for my girlfriend and one for mee...BUT it seems like the vagaries of international priority mail is setting in. My parcels were first trackable on 005 being in NJ..so far so good, then suddenly they popped up at a sort facility in Brazil, and yesterday they were cleared by customs down there. I am just wondering what to do..clearly the parcels are astray as Norway is a part of Scandinavia and NOT in South America. Hve tried to email customer service, but no luck, and it seems that I am in for a loooong wait, and are in danger of receiving no box set at all..That sucks, oh well... Peace And Love Oddleif

The next box set should be from the spring of 1977. And they should make enough so that nobody gets shut out. I got my box set (#2611) more than 2 weeks ago with no notification. No email, no tracking number, no credit card hold, etc. It pains me to read about all of the problems people are having in receiving theirs. Just hold steady folks, they're coming, and they are freakin' fantastic. No complaints here.

To scottruplin and others still waiting (in US) who want to know how long shipping takes: I am in the San Francisco area, got the shipping email on Sept 10, package arrived Sept 13. Notes: It was shipped from Menlo Park, CA. Origin scan was Sept 12 (two days after dead shipping email!). Obviously, I am close to the origin, so Portland, OR might take a bit longer. But then, yours might get shipped sooner after the email than mine did. I

Parcelforce Worldwide put a missed delivery card through my door when I got home from work. My heart stopped a few beats for 'is this it, and where is it?, whew it got dropped of with a neighbour in # 28. Rushed downstairs knocked on the door and as someone opened I saw it on the floor. I was simply relieved that my box arrived safely at last, and was one of the lucky ones where I had no difficulties through out the process. Grateful Dead and Rhino made this happen, so a very big thank you to all envolved. It's an amaizing historical collection to own and to enjoy for years to come. I've been hearing a lot about people not receiving their box number, which I thought was strange and wondered if things are going to get stranger? Then saw a post of another members number on here a little ways back after the 3??? Then my box came with my number 3062/7200, so yes talk about confused. I understand wanting it and hope to those who want it get it. Cookies inside well for most it's the music, not really fussed but would've like the extras as mentioned. I have'nt looked inside the box yet and wonder about the 'secret stash' would'nt that be good but NTAP ~ maybe so :) deadmike, jackstrwfromco and to all fellow heads who are still waiting for their's, I hope your boxes arrive safely and soon. Now for the music......peace :)

The wait is well worth it. I am only into the end of the 5th show but am impressed with all of them so far-yeah I have my favorites, but they all have something worth hearing( I keep going back to the 1st show). I'm listening on vintage tube amplifiers with tube pre-amp on super efficient speakers-very immediate and in your face sound-maybe the best you could expect for the time. Music is super amazing. Jerry is a monster -Phil is huge on the 5th show. Keith, Billy, Bobby all right in there. What an era! Sound is to me way beyond the sound of original Europe 72 mix.Now lets go run and see

Arrived by Parcelforce today. I know others have been disappointed but I think the box is superb. The box itself is well constructed and so far I have had no problems getting the discs out of the slip cases, (not played any yet, starting as soon as I sign off). The books are very well put together and in my opinion if this is what we get instead of maps, pins etc then I am more than happy. Well done to Rhino and the Dead for getting this project completed, I know there were hiccups and a lot of frustration (like how did mine take three days to travel 200 miles), things not making sense like my personalised box being no:3128, but loved the fact that the personalisation label states "United Kingdom Entry Clearance" prior to my stated i.d. I am assuming each countries label outside the US states its own name. All in all so far so good, now to start listening

My box also has a "United Kingdom Entry Clearance" label whilst I live in Holland. I assume they are all the same and it says UK as that is where the band first entered Europe. I started with the Bickershaw Festival show - I couldn't help myself, after all that was my first Dead show. I was astonished by how good it sounded. Being an outdoor show it has a reasonably neutral sound, free from hall acoustics. I haven't made any attempts yet to compare songs from this box to previously released versions so I cannot say if there is any great difference or if one version sounds decidedly better than the other. I doubt that I will bother doing that as this lot sounds just amazing to me. As well as generally sounding great, what I have heard so far also reveals a well-balanced mix where evryone can be heard and nobody dominates. Fred Garvin, don't be afraid to spend your money. I don't expect you will be disappointed. I am more than happy with what I got. OK I didn't get a road map of Europe that I initially expected, but I also initially expected sixty-something CDs and ended up getting 73. What is there to complain about? Well, customer service and/or shipping for some but for the rest I think Rhino have done a fine job at a very reasonable price.

I'm not an audiophile but I can hear differences with different types of systems with most music types. With that being said-these CDs are well done-they are detailed, well-balanced, immediate and not overly compressed to my ears. They are not flat or dull sounding at all. I use tubes, as said before-I listened to show 5 on transister amps however and thought it sounded less involving-Bobby's vocals were distant-back it went on tubes thru HDCD player as well-big difference-now I feel like I'm back in the hall and the sweat is pouring out of the speakers. So, your mileage may vary. Like everything there will be differences based on playback equipment. Luckily these discs are well done so will appreciate them on good systems. Some of the Road Trips, in contrast, sound like ka-ka on any system IMHO.Now lets go run and see

Aah, a fellow tube man! Even though my E'72 set arrived nearly two weeks ago, I haven't heard a note yet as I'm waiting for my speakers to be repaired (promised for Friday), but as of this weekend, they'll be reunited with my Counterpoint tube amps, and I can't wait to hear and feel the warmth that one can only derive from non-digital amplification. Too bad this set wasn't offered on 180g vinyl...I would have picked that over CDs in a heartbeat. BTW, have you tried any of the remastered/reissued vinyl from the dead.net store yet? I have the box set and it's a thing of (american) beauty! I just ordered Shakedown Street and will ultimately buy whatever new vinyl is offered. Viva analog!

Are there others in the U.S. that have heard no word and have not received an email at all on the personalized box sets? My account had a preauthorization for the total amount end of August but no word since and nothing has arrived. I have called, emailed several times to check on status and cannot get anyone to reply to emails, on hold forever and have yet to get through.

Hi Scottruplin, I live about 35 miles west of Portland, OR and received my box on Sept. 2nd. It shipped from Olyphant, PA (Taylor, PA) on Aug, 26th. My order was not one of the personalized packages. Hopefully, you'll receive yours soon and the long-awaited enjoyment can begin. As plenty of others have already stated in this forum, be careful with the CD sleeves. As soon as I opened up my trunk I noticed that at least 2 of my CD sleeves were ripped down the fold creases and I hadn't even pulled them out of their respective slots in the steamer trunk --- they were obviously packed that way at the factory. I was thinking of asking customer service for replacement sleeves, but it's probably not worth it being that they'll most likely just rip again due to the delicate nature of the cardboard. Good luck to you and everyone else around the globe that hasn't received their order yet. I'm thinking good thoughts for you all!!! Peace from Oregon..... Here's my humble two cents worth on how the E72 sounds compared to earlier releases. The Hundred Year Hall CD has almost no depth to the sound stage though all the voices and instruments are present. The Jahrhundert Halle version from the box set has a bit more depth to the sound stage but still nothing to crow about. The new mix is vastly improved in the areas of subtle dynamic changes and the various instruments have a greater sense of space and place about them. I doubt that my copy of Hundred Year Hall will get much play except when I want to give a before and after demonstration to a visitor. A three way comparison of Jack Straw from the original Europe 72 release had similar results as above though I think the CD version from the Golden Road Box Set sounds better than the mix and mastering on the HYH. The new E72 mix is the better of the two with the same differences noted above. I like the 'warts and all' vocals and there is just a slightly greater sense of realism with this E72 version. I not a stickler for complete shows but I like them whenever possible. My original LP copy purchased in the winter of '72 (a Christmas present maybe) easily beat the Europe 72 CD as far as engaging the listener and emotional involvement. These are only my impressions. I am enjoying the heck out of the E72 box set and I think that it is a worthwhile purchase for any Deadhead that can find a way to afford it. It passes the sonic test. My equipment: McIntosh preamp, McIntosh power amps in a bi-amp setup (all solid state), Rotel CD player with HDCD, Mirage speakers, VPI turntable all set up with care and attention to producing the best sound possible within their limits.
