    Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this enormous box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

    This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

    So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

    I think too small sometimes; with this collection in so many hands by now, I'm thinking we could do a virtual reunion tour/listening party. Kick it off with the April 7th Wembley show, wrap it up at the Lyceum on May 26th. Maybe dead.net could host a chat room and/or stream the show of the day for 24 hours. Marye, are you listening? I'm guessing an event like that would capture a lot of flying eyeballs...

Yesterday afternoon at 3.23 it arrived at ICA Supermarket (less than a quarter of a mile from where I live). All I need now is the notification. Without it, they won't let me have the package. Hopefully I'll get it today from the mailman.Hopefully ... Micke

I bought the vinyl box even though I have the originals in my collection. I believe vinyl is better than CD in many ways. Speaking of amps I am using Quicksilver Audio and 1960s vintage McIntosh with Klipsch and Alon Lotus speakers. I tend to swap out components from time to time. For vintage transistor I use Sansui 9090 and Marantz 2325. Turntables are: Sansui, Thorens and VPI. Those old amps are much better to me then a lot of the new transistor equipment I have heard.Now lets go run and see

This is the latest information provided by USPS: "Processed Through Sort Facility". It dates of September 3rd. Now, I am reading a comment by someone from Europe whose box is somewhere in Brazil. I am from Argentina, so I suppose my box must be in Poland at this very moment, or maybe Belgium. I had never experienced any shipping troubles with Dead.net, but it seems that this box thing went out of control. Waiting a little bit is OK, I'm almost sure my box will arrive soon, but having payed a shipping rate of U$S 85.00 I expected a better service really. Whatever, I hope someone from the Dead.net staff read this and give us some kind of explanation.

So I couldn't help myself ... I took a piece of paper with the Swedish parcel code and went down to the ICA Supermarket. On the way I met the mailman who said he didn't have any notification today either. But I was lucky and they handed the package over to me at ICA. So the long wait is over for me as well. The box set has finally arrived to the

Leaving the house this morning for work, i closed the front door and just as i turned, a Post Office van pulled up and the Postie welcomed me with "that was perfect timing".....alas, the parcel he had for me was much smaller than the Europe '72 box, although no less important. My mate in Valencia (CA) had sent me a fantastic package containing 2 GD tie-dyes, a bottle of Blended Peach Liqeuer and a 32GB pen drive chock full of Los Lobos and Little Feat shows from his DAUD masters. Not getting down at all over this box set fiasco as i just worked out that i have around 2TB of shows that i need to review....going to take a hell of a long time, but it's hardly a chore. Anyway, i'll be home in 2 hours and will see what transpires. Later, Ian.

Didnt take too long. I think two weeks is just fine. Imo box is very good. Very well worth the money spent. I was ready to be dissappointed because of all the complaining. Book is great. I take rather that than a dozen of `original` tickets or map of Europe. Music? Same old, same old;). When do I have time to listen all this? And why should I? Is there life before death? Keep them coming. Micke did u get yours?

Deadmike, I'm really happy you got your box bro, that's great. I have been watching you wait a long painful time, enjoy the music, it will be worth the wait. "Available while supplies last" that is listed at the bottom of evert Dick's Pick still available. Only 23 of 26 are still available on this site. As I said last week, better get them while you can. Some a re selling for 2-3 times the price on Ebay. They gave been getting away from plastic cases for a long time, the ones they have will sell out evenly. They may do another pressing with the cardboard cases like the RTs. I took a break from E72 and have been listening to the RT Bonus CDs, really good jams. Enjoy the weekend. 3134/7200 has just arrived here in New Brighton and I have to say that it really is a special piece of history....thanks ever so to all involved in this mammoth project, and if anyone is asking.....yes, I'd go through all the apprehension, mixed messages, general mind boggling turmoil for any future releases too....and why ?....because I love everything about this band, the scene and extended Dead family. Going to hunker down over the next week with a few of these great shows on my Creative player. Happy days, Ian.

blows my mind that the box can reach the far corners of the globe while mine sits in a customs processing center for a week at the canada/us border. It was shipped Sept. 1, entered customs processing the 6th, cleared the 13th, I now await delivery. Ah well, I know it will get here eventually and it's exciting reading all of the positivity from those that have received their boxes already.

As far as numbers above 3000 are concerned, the simplest explanation would be that every initial order was given a number, and when any of those orders got canceled for whatever reason, the "new" orders got sequential numbers above 3000 instead of the canceled order's numbers. Just a guess, but seems more likely than any conspiracy theory.

...just screwups. The numbering should've been kept separate from the personallization, and I think the whole "what, we're supposed to have a number on all 7200 boxes?!?" faux pas may have complicated matters. I do hope somebody has been clever enough to ensure (1) there are no duplicate numbers, and (2) there are no numbers above 7200...although I wouldn't necessarily be surprised ;)

I've been listening to a crummy hissy tape of this for 20 + years and didn't think it was a particularily great show. Listening to this great new mix is a revelation. What a blazing show! Keith is just all over this Dark Star! Was there a single Dark Star on this tour that was not just far out beautiful magic?

that so many boxes are rolling in. Patience to those who got lost in the shuffle. Once it gets all un-screwed up you'll be glad you didn't cancel your order. Listening to Bickershaw now. Maybe it was the cold or the rain, or the heaters,.it's a great show, but they are pretty far out of tune. Sounds almost like the Stones. Maybe they were going for that British invasion sound.

Another day, no email, no delivery, no answering of emails at dead.net, and though the preauthorization went through almost a month ago no charge to my account yet. I suppose its possible that the boxes are still trickling out in the U.S? Oh well, been waiting 9 months so a few more days...., we'll see.

I'm still wading my way through the whole tour, and chronologically. There are way too many highlights to go through at this juncture. The Jack Straw from France 5/3 is picture perfect. The mixing and mastering are fantastic. The use of modern processing is done artistically. Never too much or too dry, without stepping all over the actual room ambience, and utilized at exactly the perfect times. Glad I got the box. Would have been bummed out if I didn't.

I miss-read my notes. The 4/29 version purportedly has the bridge. According to the poster, the 4/17 version is titanic but short, fast and trippy. I haven't listen yet, myself. Thanks for pointing that out.

Zerofan7, not even a speck of disappointment here. As far as entertainment objects & music records go, this box is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. Ruben Lopez Guerrero's comments tell exactly what the score is. Micke, it's gonna be a nice weekend for you, man. First night Lyceum 5/23 rises to such a crescendo, I had to follow up immediately with 5/24 to see where the energy was going. Two great setlists (albeit with "only" three discs each, as compared to four for the other half of the run). Not everything's perfect in 5/23's first set (where's Jerry in Jack Straw during his supposed solo break?).... But Me and My Uncle is a surprise, bonafide highlight (most upfront organ on a version since the Matrix '66?), and starting with Two Souls In Communion it's say goodnight, squire, for the rest of the set. Good Lovin' RAWKS (another sweet organ flourish from Pig as he closes the song out) and as exhilarating a performance of Casey Jones as you're gonna find. And then the second set. He's Gone has a nice head of steam by now, Comes a Time ('nuff said), and I know 5/26 is "the" Europe '72 Dew, but this one sure gives it a run. And can't beat an Uncle John's encore (since they weren't doing Box of Rain or Attics on this tour). I'll just keep talking up Pigpen's organ on this show ~ he's even in the Dark Star jam for some moments, which, while it lasts, adds an unexpected old-schoolness to the '72 psychedelia. Sadly, 5/24 is his final second set/ show-closer appearance. But what a soulpunch to go out with, as we knew from Rockin' At the Rhein, but now it's in full context. Amazing how after all these decades everyone's going to be so conversant with all these shows as they make their way through this box, it just makes me smile to read everyone's discoveries of this moment or that. Still holding out on 4/17 Tivoli. I've only ever heard what's on the DVD ~ i.e., NOT Dark Star, NOT Caution. And still waiting for a Dark Star to knock the Rheinhalle out of my number one seed. Hearing some mighty big talk about Tivoli........

My box sets are still stuck in Brazil, so it will be interesting to see how this goes..My hope is that once they clear customs down there someone will realize a mistake has been done, and ship them onto the right adress up here in the far north. Its a real bumer that two box sets with a combined value of US Dollars 1070 are lost, but hopefully things will be set right soonish, Do have complaints about customer service never answering my E mails, but tons of love for Marye who promised to look into it, and try to rectify matters. than I anticipated. I have had the box for almost 3 weeks and am still only finfishing up the third show. Part of it is that I listen to lots of different stuff, but I really like to absorb the different sets and versions of everything, and when something is good, I have to keep listening, and it is just SO good and so varied.

Well, I finally got the big old box from UPS yesterday. I know there are still many out there, that like me, had major issues with customer service. There are a few things I can tell you from my experience. First, if you changed your address or cc, that is most likely the reason that you are screwed. It seems that if you made a change, you got bumped down to the bottom of the shipment list. I made sure that CS knows how crappy that is. I ended up finally getting moved up the chain into Rhino customer service, and that finally got things fixed. With that said, I did have to kind of read them the riot act before they really became serious about fixing the problem. I told the higher level gentlemen, who was rather nice, that the issue for most of us wasn't the actual delay, it was the terrible communication we were getting, with no one in dead.net cs really knowing what was going on. Also, I was one that had a DL order number, so I don't know if that played into the delay as well. Now on to better things. The box is phenomenal. I do not know how someone could not think this is worth the money. Both books, especially the hardcover, are excellent. The essays (nice touch getting Cutler and Trist) are great. The case itself is very nice. But the obvious star is the music. Hell, I've only listed to 4/7, and it is off the charts good in both sound quality and performance. On a quick note on the sound, I am fortunate enough to have a very good headphone setup that reveals all, and the sound, at least for show one, is incredible. I have no doubt the rest will be just as good. They come out smokin' with Greatest Story, and I love Pig's organ fills on Sugaree, tasty indeed. That's only the first two songs from disc 1. I can assure anyone considering the all music addition, even without the book, box, etc. it is more than worth the $450. I mean, at a price of $6.16/disc, it really is a pretty darn good value. Major props to DL, JN, DG, and all of the others involved in bringing this together. All of your hard work and dedication really shines through in the final product. I for one could care less about not having more schwag in the box, or on the numbering. I plan on keeping this forever and than passing it on to my kids. If one of girls sells it, than they should plan on being haunted by my spirit. But to each their own on these types of things. To all still waiting, good luck, and know that it is more than worth the wait. To those that have it already, much continued happy listeneing (like I even need to say this)!

Let me join in the disbelief over how this order has been handled by dead.net. I called in August to update my credit card number and was told they got the new number and I was all set. A week later, after not getting an email confirmation the order had processed, I called and was told they mistakenly tried to run the old card number. I gave them my current one again. I was told a shipping confirmation number would come soon. No number came. I called in a week. They asked for my card information again. I gave it for a third time. A week later, after having received no confirmation the order had shipped, I called again. They asked for my card number again. I gave it. On Thursday, I got a call on my cell phone from dead.net "customer service" saying they were about to cancel my order because I never provided them with an updated credit card number. I called again. I gave them my number. Again. They said my card was charged, but no charge has appeared on my online billing statement more than a day later. I fully expect that they will cancel my order tonight, saying that I never gave them the correct card number, even though I did at least five times and was told it had been charged. Although I doubt anyone is monitoring this, the way this project has been handled from the ordering/charging/shipping side has been shameful.

Thanks to all of you, who helped me with suggestions or congratulated me after I recieved the box set. IT IS a really beautiful trunk and it's not as fragile as one may think after reading several early comments. I didn't think I had time off to start listening until next Sunday, and in a way I haven't got time for it, but I put on the first CD about twenty minutes ago. I do love the sound and the music but I understand now what's wrong with covers. They're too tight manufactured. It's impossible to get a CD out of the cover without tearing it a little apart. It's a shame ... Quite a few say it doesn't matter 'cause it's all about the music. I would like to say no, it isn't just about the music - it may mainly be about the music, but it is also about how the music is presented. At a live show that might be how the musicians act, the lights, the vibe and everything else that seems important fto a live audience. When getting music on a physical record it may be about the look of the cover and in what shape it is. At least it is like that for me. Maybe if I was blind I wouldn't care much but I'm not. But all in all, I'm satisfied with the release. Minuses only to the material the covers are made of and how they are made, and to the shipping and everything associated with that. Otherwise it is pluses all the way. :-) Micke

Right there with you brother. Is there a supervisor, manager, big boss man, hell anyone in charge there??? If so do they read these comments about there employees??? marye - any word? anything?? is anyone out there??? "I won't take your life won't even take a limb just unload my shotgun and take a little skin"

A wonderful treat - just got my Europe 72 complete box set 5 days ago - so I've been busy importing CDs to play through my Apple digital audio system (iMac - iTunes Apple Lossless codec - airport digital out to my hifi). The music is fantastic, so is the documentation that accompanies each Disc. It is a really thrilling experience to own a part of the Grateful Dead archive like this and it adds a variety that means it is much easier to listen to more Dead from my favourite era. The box has it's draw backs but is really just a collectors piece which is a bonus anyway. It arrived Monday morning and really impressed my 3 year old son - he described it as "treasure" and later we listened to the first few tracks and he asked me if that was "from the treasure chest". But remember a treasure chest is really about the treasure not the quality of the container it is in. Thanks everyone for a great release and thanks to the Grateful Dead for being the Grateful Dead

After pulling out the first CD and ripping the cover apart a bit, for the second CD I took a nipper and wired it with plaster. It's still a bit hard to pull out the CD's but also a bit easier with that solution. And the plaster prevents the CD's to be damaged. Micke

Since it hasn't been posted in a while, to get the discs out of the sleeves, all you need to do is squeeze on both sides of the case in the middle, with thumb on one side, other fingers on the other side, and tilt the case down while squeezing. The CD's slide right out to the point that they are easy to pull out the rest of the way. Haven't ripped a one yet. I can't remeber who posted this originally, but it's somewhere back in the 40's or 50's. Whoever it was, good work!

At last. I am just staring at it. Number 0146/7200. I want to thank all of you who offered my hope and encouragement throughout the long and frustrating wait. Today I am grateful not just for the music, but for all of you here.

You got me wonderin'. What's a 'nipper' and how do you 'wire' it with plaster? Just curious. BTW, I have been using the sideways squeeze method (at low altitude) with decent success so far. Just have to make sure not to hold it high so it drops on the floor.

So many people have commented on this, so here's my 2 cents...I have all 73 cd's in a case logic case and the Europe '72 sticker is on the front of this case. With the amount of times the cd's will be removed and played over the course of years, I want the original cases to remain just exactly perfect. The only way I see this happening is with the Case logic case. It's just my way of doing it...

I have been listening to each original CD once to verify no pressing issues, then making copies of each CD and storing the copies into a case logic case. The originals will be stored back in their sleeves and into the truck for safe keeping.
