    More from The Vault

We know what you’re thinking: What took ’em so long? After all, Two from the Vault, the second of the Dead’s archival releases from multitrack master tapes, came out 15 years ago. And of course, there has been a plethora of releases of multitrack material since, spanning much of the band’s career. So what gives? Well, way back in ’92-’93, Dead soundman Dan Healy, who had picked and mixed the first two choices in the Vault series (from August ’75 and August ’68, respectively), chose the 2/19/71 concert from Port Chester’s wonderful Capitol Theatre, as the third entry in the series. He had it mixed and ready to go, but then for various reasons — many now lost to the mists of time — it never came out. Bummer.

The good news, though, is that now this show can be enjoyed in all its glory. Perhaps you’ve heard one of the soundboard versions that have been floating around the taping world for many moons. But I guarantee you’ve never heard it like this.

Three from the Vault comes from an intriguing time in the Grateful Dead’s history. Though still riding high from their first serious commercial successes the previous year (Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty), the Dead were not ones to rest on their laurels. Indeed, the waterfall of new songs just kept on coming—at the Capitol that February they introduced seven new tunes, all of them strong enough that they became cherished cornerstones of the Dead’s repertoire—and all are represented here. The night before this show (2/18/71) saw the first versions of “Bertha,” “Greatest Story Ever Told,” “Loser,” “Playing in the Band” and “Wharf Rat.” This 2/19 show boasted the first “Bird Song” and “Deal.” Giving birth is rarely easy, and there are definitely a few rough edges here and there in these newly minted gems—“Greatest Story” didn’t have its chorus yet, and “Playing in the Band” hadn’t arrived at its magical symmetry—but you can still hear the thrill of raw discovery in these tracks as the musicians explore and enjoy their musical progeny.

This show also marked the beginning of a five-year period when Bill Kreutzmann was the sole drummer in the band. If he was at all apprehensive about this change, you’d never know it by listening to his fluid and nimble work here; it’s quite amazing, actually. But all the players are on top of their games, as they tear through a great selection of songs, from still-new tunes like “Truckin’,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones” and “Easy Wind,” to older numbers, such as “China Cat Sunflower” and the dynamic take of “That’s It for the Other One.” But what struck me most, hearing this show anew with Healy’s sparkling mix, is that Pigpen is really in top form: On the deep blues of “It Hurts Me Too”; a magnificent, serpentine version of “Smokestack Lightning” (which also features some ultra-slinky slide from Mr. Garcia); the chugging proto-funk of “Easy Wind”; and the jammed-out rockin’ crowd-pleaser that closes the second set, “Good Lovin’.” Three From the Vault was originally set to come out in the spring of 1993, sometime around the 20th anniversary of Pigpen’s death. Nearly 15 years later it still stands as a fine tribute to him, and as a document of this band beyond description in a time of triumph and transition.

The 2-CD package also contains a lively historical essay by Gary Lambert, notes from mastering engineer Joe Gastwirt and a number of rare photos.

What gives re the shipping options?? International shipping is expedited (ie. presumably to arrive by 26th June) or forget it - apparently, us overseas buyers don't have the patience to wait a few weeks beyond release date, to receive our product. $78 shipping on a CD and a T-shirt!!! Come on dead.net - give us a standard shipping option, otherwise my credit card is staying firmly in my pocket.

I have the Port Chester run on tape, and much or all I'm sure is available on archive.org too. I remember 2-18 having this high pitched whine on it. Could have been just my tapes though. You can't go wrong with this show, nor do I think you could go wrong with a complilation from the run either.

Have I missed something - is he no longer the mixer/masterer? I know that Healy mixed this but surely it's newly mastered, meaning Norman has been passed by? Why? The man's brilliant.

Just adding my concern about the shipping cost - over $66 dollars for the cd? I fired off an email to customer services. I'll let people know what kind of response I get, but really, this shouldn't have happened.

What is going on with international shipping fees???? The reason why i have been buying for years online from th official GD service is the feeling to support the 'family'. But if i have to pay some 78 $ to ship a product i won't be buying anymore, that's for sure. Who is in charge ??? urgent modification is needed. Sorry to bother this online chat with this but it is a real concern.

In the past I have bought every new release without a second thought about shipping costs - I only cared about the music. And I still care about the music ( thats what it all about ), but am not prepared to be ripped off like this. Unless the Shipping charge is changed I shall not buy anything else. Have the money men taken over the organisation completely? It does not cost $66 to ship a CD to the UK. Get it sorted please.

Hi !I agree with LIG71 and Paul McFadyen. I live in Paris, France, and I just discovered I should pay $ 22 for the CD (this is ok), plus $ 66,51 to ship it. This is really too much ! I don't care getting my things trough UPS, and the regular postal service you used before was just fine. Just like LIG71, I bought many things from GD store, but I won't anymore, of course, unless you find a solution for us non-US buyers. Thanks.

It used to be as cheap to buy from the GD store with shipping charges as buying in the UK, plus you would get the bonus disc or whatever. I recommend anyone in Europe to order Three From The Vault via SpinCDs - www.spincds

Hi service,I am from Germany and I would pre-order your Vault-box. I ordered in the past many new items from you but now I think your shipping costs ($66,51) are unfair. So I and some other friends of mine wouldn't order now or in futur, if you don't change your expensive shipping-charge for international !!!!! Other stores in USA work with DHL-Airborne-Express and the shipping-charge for items with the value of $ 51.- till $ 100.- costs $ 23.- and not more !!! I think your organisation could offer same conditions, if you want. Or what do you mean with your idea of the global "family"? I hope you change immediately these horrible shipping-charge for international customer and offer us friends fair shipping costs !!!! Thanks! axel-e

Surely it's a mistake. It must be a bug with the new site. Even the stupidest marketing department wouldn't think it's reasonable to charge $78.20 American to sent two little plastic discs from the USA to Australia. Right? PS. why does everyone's message (mine included) say "new" in red at the top?

After much heartsearching I have, with great regret, cancelled my order for Three from the Vault. I am not paying $66 to DHL for my fix. It is a very sad day that finds me having to do this, but something has to be done about it. Maybe if more of us protest they will change the policy and offer a sensible Shipping Charge. We do after all want to buy this music!

No, and Yes! This show was at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY. The marquee is still there! The Capital Theater used to be located in Passaic, NJ and yes, the Dead played there as well, though in the late 70's.

Was just looking through the site, and seems as though it is coming together slowly. I don't (as of yet) see any download purchase options, but I'm sure it will soon be available. To save on shipping, maybe the download of the show will be ready by June 27th. Am I correct to say there are not any downloads available for purchase just yet? Greg SC

I've Purchased Every CD, DVD, book, download ( over priced i thought )since GDM started in the mid 80's including all offshoot / solo stuff but I will not pay $60.00 for shipping I'm in Canada and am closer than some US locations Also the bonus incentive to pre-order this seems a little lame ( a list of songs for CD's I already own) I hope this shipping thing is just a mistake and is fixed soon this DARKNESS got to give !

I guess I just can't believe it's been 15 years. I remember getting One From the Vault in my mailbox about 1 hour before leaving for the 1991 Las Vegas Run. And now, holy smokes, it has been 15 years, since 2FTV. LIfe, oh, life. I am definitely a Touch Head, but now, I really feel like an old timer.

...have now reduced. There is now a 1st Class option at $20, which still seems high to me - as I recall, the old site used to have 3 options, the 1st Class of which was the middle price, with a Standard option below this ($11-12) As it stands, Spin CD's are STILL £0.47 cheaper (on current exchange rates), and probably quicker too - I guess it depends on how much we want the free gift, but some credit is due to the folks here, for listening.

The postage charge to the UK is still far too high. Other record outlets in the USA charge between $6 and $10 - so why do we have to fork out $22 postage for 3FTV.

US$20 is too much for postage. I really, really, really want to buy this CD but AUS$50 for a double disc set???? You're kidding. $35-40 is expensive but reasonable. I'll just wait for the downloads (which no doubt will cost way more than they used to). What is going on? Why are they charging so much? There is still the $78.20 option. What do I get for that - one of Jerry's guitars? The original multi-tracks to the Fillmore West run? A few years ago I bought a large, heavy guitar amplifier on ebay from the US and it only cost about $50 to ship over. Something isn't right about this - I'm still convinced it's a bug on the website. Like some people have said, there isn't even a bonus disc. The Cow Palace 3-disc set plus bonus CD was $50. For half as much music this costs just as much. I guess they will realise when only a handful of people pre-order, when usually loads of people do.

I don't know nuthin' about how the Store runs, but I'm wondering if the new postage system here in the States that went into effect, what, 2 weeks ago? has something to do with the wacky postage charges for international mail. I know it's more expensive for me to mail CDs back and forth to friends than it used to be, but I don't track on the particulars.

I thought I'd add a few more titles to my order to bring down the average shipping cost so I tried including the four View From the Vault titles in my pre-order. The postage and handling charges went from $20 UPUS to $80 UPUS. In the past, e.g. with six-packs of Dick's Picks, an order of this size would have cost me around $30 on P&H (and I still would have felt ripped off compared to Amazon). This is totally screwed up. Please let me know when it's fixed. Meanwhile, I'm heading straight back to my favourite BT site.

Reduce the charges to the UK, or I go elsewhere - deep discount are $17 cheaper, Amazon is cheaper. Your choice, if you want to keep my custom, sort out your postage costs. To date, I have bought every single GD release from the official store. I am certainly thinking twice about this one.

I'm stoked, as I stoke, to see this site and new music coming forth. My suggestion; take the whole Capitol Theatre run and make it a collector's addition limited time offer like you did with Fillmore West. You sold thousands of those sets in a short time. I'm sure there are many runs in the vault that could be "packaged" as such to be available to hardcore heads. I'd buy it in a hart beat. In the mean time, thanks for the perseverence with all that goes on INSIDE the organization. We who devour the music and the scene are hugely appreciative. Sugaree63

The new postage rates have made Global Priority mail more expensive...a $20 flat rate, which is presumably what the new rate for '1st class' is. It still doubles the cost of the cd for us Deadheads abroad, and a catalogue for Dick's Picks instead of a bonus cd just isn't enough incentive to pre-order. Based on a weight of 10oz for cd & packaging...which is generous...it could be posted by regular airmail for $8.80. I live in Ireland, and have ordered several cds (usually through Amazon) from an outfit called Caiman who ship out of Florida. They charge about $3.50 postage...presumably they have a deal with the USPS, why can't the Dead do the same? It would seem to me to be a good idea for the Dead organisation to keep its long-time fans loyal, and not make us feel like mere 'customers'...the Jerry site is a case in point, nothing more than a store front and a travesty to the memory of the man (thanks, Deborah!). Did noone figure that charging three times the price of the product for shipping was gonna make a lot of people cranky? As did pulling the sbd's off the archive a couple of years back. It gives the wrong impression, guys!
