Grateful Dead bio-pic
This sort of thing makes me nervous. Apparently a film is in the works based on Parish's "Home Before Daylight" book. Info here:

Yo Soy Boricua!
re;Grateful Dead Roadie Story Coming to Big Screen - Cinematical
Yeah I just read about it at Cinematical http://tinyurl.com/ytkdn4 via Relix .Our story is too convoluted and varied by perspective to be misinterpreted into a movie.
Like "I Robot" or "Dune", (which both sucked), the writers work gets mashed up in production and here we are as much the Writers as Parish and Layden. I wish them the best of luck but share your nervousness leadbelly27.
(This deserves a topic post of it's own so it doesn't stay buried)
"if you get confused..."
back to the fillmore story
I just came across this short story taken from an anthology of Rock and Roll stories. It's written by this guy who has written for Rolling Stone and The Village Voice. It tells the story of an 18 yr old in 2069 traveling back in time to 1969 to see the Dead at the Fillmore. Kind of corny, but fun. Link here:http://www.hofmag.com/content/view/813/119/

Rare Owsley interview!
Joel Selvin of the San Francisco Chronicle pays Owsley a visit and gets a pretty good interview! Also, great pics of Owsley, Kesey and the boys, not to mention the story of Alice D. Millionaire. A must-read!
Army Wives 'ghosts'
If you should happen to tune into 'Lifetime' Channels' new hit show, Army Wives, look around in the 'Hump Bar'. It is where they all gather, drink and talk, one of the characters,Roxy, works there. Look closely at the bar and sometimes you'll get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right. We are everywhere!!!!!!
Jerry Garcia Cycling fan ?
I was watching the English coverage of the Tour De France and the presenter, Gary Imlach Said " And in the words of the great cycling fan Jerry Garcia, What a Long Strange Trip it's been"
a pity he didn't know it was Robert Hunter's words

The Wonder Years and Ripple
In People magazine, August 27, page 111.
"At Fred Savage's house, 3 p.m. means nap time - but not for Daddy. Nearly 20 years ago, he starred as Kevin Arnold, the 12-year -old hero of TV's The Wonder Years, a tender coming of age drama set in the 60's. Now the 31-year-old actor is all grown up and crooning the Grateful Dead song "Ripple" to his 1-year-old son Oliver to get him to sleep. It's a tradtition that began an hour before the baby's birth on August 5, 2006. "Whenever I sing it he drifts right off," says Savage."
I enjoyed this show because he portrayed someone the same age I was in that period. A fictional tv contemporary. But in real life a Deadhead?....

Jerry lives!
In the pages of the latest (Nov.) Guitar Player which I just got in today's mail. Every month the best albums/CDs of a guitar master are featured in a section called Oeuvre Easy.In this issue it is "Jerry Garcia Live", written and compiled by Henry Kaiser. There is a great 2/3 page photo of Jerry walking down Haight Street in 1968, guitar in hand and big smile. Henry Kaiser's focus in the piece are the live not studio recordings.
There has been more mention this year of Jerry and the Dead in the pages of GP than there has been for years.
Do I contradict myself?

Walt Whitman-Song of Myself
cool!
thanks for the pointer. Henry always has something interesting to say, in my experience.
One of my favorite Jerry photos of all time is the one Jon Sievert took for the GP cover in 1978. By the time I met Jon many years later, apparently the negatives from the photo shoot (which GP owned) had vanished, or I would have bought a print in a heartbeat. My copy of the magazine is a bit faded and battered, but I'll see if I can scan it in. Great close-up of Wolf. Beautiful wood grain on that guitar.

Baltimore Sun Article
I read a very touching and informative article in the Sun yesterday, regarding our relationship with the Grateful Dead (and resulting music/groups) and our (sometimes bewildered) family members. I hope this message can help put our quest in perspective to those family members and friends that cannot understand. Check the article out at:baltimoresun.com/branthaver
The Dude Abides!
Oh, I Forgot
While I was reading this article, I was listening to my newly acquired Phil & Friends, Atlanta 2006 concert. At the exact point of the article that quoted the lines from "Franklin's Tower", I listened to Phil & Friends play and sing those words. It was (to say the least) bone chilling. I had never heard that part of the concert and it was the very first time I played the CD for myself. Thanks again, everyone!

Shagedelic!
Yes, I remember that windsurfing incident of which you speak, "badger" (if that's your real name). You escaped that day (Alex Allen), but wait until next time for which I have an even better idea. I'm going to place him in an easily escapable situation involving an overly elaborate and exotic death.
Oh and btw, do you still have Vanessa Kensington's number? I seem to have misplaced my little (evil) black book.

Jerry
Was reading a book yesterday called the Devils Teeth, by Susan Casey, about her time spent on the Farallon Islands, 30 miles west of San Francisco, with people reasearching the Great White sharks that congregate there every fall. One of them told her about the time that a big powerboat with Jerry's friends and relatives came out to the Farallones in big swells to spread Jerry's ashes. He had been told they were coming and him and another watched from the island as it happened. The next day the guy spotted a new Great White and they named it Jerry Garcia, but after a couple years it was eaten by Orcas. The story is on p.184. Ya learn something new every day!

You find the darnest things by checking that On the Web link (on the top left, under Community). Seems to bring in whatever people are saying about the Dead online at the moment, which can be weird spam and can be pretty interesting.
It's just exactly perfect!
Shelves in the bedroom for the vault recordings, a view of alpine valley to the northish, and good old San Francisco to the west, a chef's kitchen and A triangle office! .......................Hmmmmm.... A triangle office, just in time for the Egypt release. Very fitting.

jerry quote
I'm reading the new book by Jesse Ventura called "Don't Start The Revolution Without Me". Talking about the two-party system Jesse says: " I like to quote the late great Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead, who said, " If your made to pick the lesser of two evils, it means you're still pickin' evil."
I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in politics.
re : Jerry quote
It is a great book and I throw my support behind it also. Check it out folks, its a good read.

a blatant rip-off
I wonder where Clairol got the idea for "Touch of Grey" for men? They could at least use the Dead's song in their commercial!

grateful books
From a book I'm reading called "The Far Corner"-Northwestern views on land, life, and literature. By John Daniel, 2009, Talking about John Muir he writes: As followers of the Grateful Dead like to remind us, quoting J.R,R, Tolkien, "Not all who wander are lost."

Tolkien, John Muir, The Grateful Dead and the Northwest
Hey, sounds like a good mental and physical place to reside. Glad I'm here.Spent much of the weekend wandering here in the forests of NE WAshington.
I've always loved that quote.

and what book on north-west literature...
and what book on north-west literature would be complete without a chapter on Mr. Ken Kesey? Seems the author met him in 1979 and became a friend of the family. Glad I'm here too!

Sugar Mag visits the Parks!
Sugar Magnolia appears as under music in Ken Burns' National Parks Series in Episode Six, during a segment highlighting the international growth of the idea of National Parks! Woo Hoo!!!!
Conversation is always more interesting than recitation, so speak your mind and not someone else's.
Yeah...
"Touch of Grey" by Clairol does sound like a blatant rip-off to me too......I thought "WTF?!" as soon as I saw the commercial. It's funny and ironic though....I can't picture any Deadheads rushing to the shelves for a product like that. Hardly Clairol's "core demographic"...we don't care about a Touch of Grey...It kinda suits us....anyway.
"In a bed, in a bed, by the waterside I will lay my head.
Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul."
silly guys
"touch of grey" is a very old pre-dead statement about hair that is just slightly grey! The Dead did get inspiration from real life sometimes, you know :P**********************************
Education: that which reveals to the wise, and conceals from the stupid, the vast limits of their knowledge.

believe me
Clairol was pushing Touch of Gray when I was a kid. And that was quite a while ago.
