Post-show interview with Phil Lesh
The Greek Theater, on a hillside on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley, directly across from the Golden Gate, was a spectacular place to see a Grateful Dead show - or any performance. I saw almost all of the latter-day GD shows there (not the '67 or '68 shows, alas), and it was never less than a splendid experience. (See this article for more on the Greek Theater, which opened in 1903.)
The music in this week's GD Hour is from the second-to-last Dead show at the Greek: Friday, August 18, 1989. That run of shows was slightly off-kilter - the usual Friday-through-Sunday sequence was moved up a day after the tickets went on sale due to a scheduling conflict with the University of California, which owns and operates the Greek. So the Sunday show was moved to Thursday, and this Friday show was the middle night of the run.
After several years of attending shows there, many Deadhead tribes had settled into favorite spots and could be found in their usual places at every show. I took my portable tape recorder with me one day and asked some folks why they were where they were. "Where in the Greek Are You?" is a three-minute montage of the responses.
You'll also hear a brief excerpt of a post-show interview with Phil Lesh, talking about the return of "I Bid You Good Night after an 11-year absence from the repertoire. Several Greek shows (6/22/86, 7/15-17/88, and 8/17-19/89) were broadcast live on KPFA, conveniently located just down the hill from the UC campus, so we usually had a band member or two stop by for a chat before, during, or after.
The '88 and '89 Greek shows were also benefits for the Rex Foundation, which continues to do good works in the world - please visit their web site.

right on!
I'd like to echo the echo of.....well, you know...... The GDH has always been so important. Gans' role as editor in this program / process has always been overlooked and under-commented on, ..... it seems to me. As a long time listener it is so obvious the guy just doesn't simply tee up anything he can get his hands on to fill another weeks airtime. So often the music featured has an extrememly solid basis for having been chosen. It for me has been a great tool in getting that rounded, full view perspective on the music I'd like to think I have. Plus anyone who's caught any of his commentary in efforts like "Anthem to Beauty" has got to be struck by the soulful expertise with which he discusses the scene. Gan's and David Crosby are my two favourite chroniclers of what went down. Two guys who not only really got it but have a gift for expressing themselves on the topic.

I'd like to echo drewstar's comments. Being landlocked in St. Louis, for me the GD Hour was critically important in my GD development, beginning over 20 years ago (has it beeeen that long!?). Hearing some of these older shows has been a thrill. I also enjoy being able to access it whenever I can here. So, thanks David. I feel I owe you a personal debt!

I love the dead head hour

I just had to comment on how well you guys haveput the GD hour together i used to listen to it relgiously until it got pulled off the air here in montana but now i just come to your web site to listen thanks for everything.

only get 17 minutes of audio using windows and none audio using apple...help!!!

I know that it may seem as though all the efforts are not appreciated at times and it may not be worth the time to keep this going. But please know, the gdh and taper's sections are bright lights in my life and they mean a lot to me. The great shows, samples and the simple fact that there are people passionate about keeping the Grateful Dead tradition alive does my heart proud. The TIMMYs of the world will come around or eventually go away. I hope that this site continues to provide the window into the vault. We know you are a blessing to the world and I hope this is a reminder to you of that fact.

I only went to the Greek one year, 1984. Great Shows!!!I love the comment on your dead head hour show that I am listening to right now, about how steep the hill was. Brings back memories. We were right in the center, right at the beginning of the hill, and it was steep and really hard to dance there. I literally danced my shoes off at those shows.

Greek 89

thanks David for putting some of this Greek run up. This was a fun run and the band was strong all 3 nights (as they seemed to be for much of 89). Loved the "where in the Greek are you" segment. Very funny. Love the Greek. Too bad this was the last run. Thanks for sharing.

I just want to say thanks. I've been hearing your show here in Columbus Oh on and off for a long time now. Like everything, you never know what you've got till it's gone. I can't imagine a world without the GD hour and I hope it never goes away. The internet ( thanks Al) has made a grate thing even grater. I would like to hear some Kingswood 87 and Omni spring of 90. I love thoseshows and I love you too!!! Tim!!!
