Come Join Us For Road Trips!

It’s time to put a little gas-gas-gas back into the ol’ Tour Bus and give it another spin, because Grateful Dead is very pleased to announce the debut of a new series of archival releases called Road Trips!

Here’s the deal: We all loved the Dicks Picks series. Over the course of 36 amazing releases between 1993 and 2005, GD archivists Dick Latvala (R.I.P.) and David Lemieux continually blew our little minds plucking one righteous show after another from the vaults, from classics like the February ’70 Fillmore East run (DP4) and Englishtown ’77 (DP 15), to overlooked masterpieces like 9/28/76 (DP 20) and 9/21/72 (DP 36), and shows not in general circulation among traders at the time, such as the February ’68 shows of DP 22 and the superb “Houseboat Tapes” from August 1971 that made up DP 35. Coupled with the many exceptional releases culled from multitrack tapes (the Fillmore West box, Steppin’ Out, The Grateful Dead Movie Soundtrack, Nightfall of Diamonds, et al) and the popular Download Series, there’s been a lot of musical territory covered over the years… but not all of it, of course—not even close!

With Road Trips we’re going to try something a little different. We want to plug in a few more pieces of the Grateful Dead puzzle by putting the spotlight on different tours and series of shows that have been neglected through the years. Take Road Trips Volume 1, Number 1, for instance. This two-disc set (plus a special Bonus Disc - now sold out) was culled from the Dead’s blazing fall 1979 East Coast swing, when the band was just hitting its stride with new keyboardist Brent Mydland. You’ll find killer versions of “Dancing in the Street” > “Franklin’s Tower,” long exploratory jams on “Playing in the Band” and “Terrapin,” a rattle-your-brain “Shakedown,” and lots more, all pulled from the master tapes in the vault and expertly mastered in HDCD for maximum power and clarity by Jeffrey Norman. The sold out Bonus Disc offers another hour-and-a-quarter of highlights from the tour. (You can find the complete track listings for all three discs here.)

Every Road Trips release will come with a beautifully designed booklet containing an essay about how the music on the discs fits into the Dead’s long history, plus many rare and never-before-seen photographs. We think you’ll agree it’s a pretty cool package. But wait, there’s more (as they say)! When each “edition” of Road Trips is announced on this site, we will also give you a link to an affiliated site devoted to the series which will include such goodies as articles and reviews from the tour (See one reviewer after another mess up Grateful Dead song titles! See the band savaged by cretinous critics!); additional photos; and any other weird/cool stuff we come across. Together we can paint a really rich and vibrant audio-visual picture of different stops along the Grateful Dead highway!

And this is just the BEGINNING of what we promise will be a tidal wave of releases, which will include more rarities from the deepest corners of the vault, multitrack releases, box sets (the patient will be rewarded; nudge-nudge, wink-wink, say no more), DVDs, downloads and who-knows-what-else. So keep your Third Eye tuned into this space for more in the coming weeks and months!

A Few AFAQ’s (Anticipated Frequently Asked Questions) About Road Trips

Sounds pretty interesting, but what took you guys so frickin’ long? We thought you’d forgotten us.
Naw, we never forgot you. It’s just taken a little longer than expected to get the ball rolling again and to figure out how to move forward in a way that will satisfy and hopefully also expand the fan base. As a certain sage known to all of us once wrote: “It takes time to pick a place to go…”

Is Dicks Picks over, done, kaput?
Yes, that series of releases ended with Volume 36. It will continue to be available, however. Road Trips will have a little more flexibility than Dicks Picks, in that we are not limited to full-show releases, or even 2-track tapes…or anything for that matter—we haven’t made any rules about what IT is. I guarantee we’ll surprise you from time to time.

But we want to hear full shows, too!
Don’t worry, there will definitely still be full-show releases. We’ll have more on that soon.

OK, I guess it might be pretty cool. I’ll check it out. In fact I’ve got a ton of ideas of shows and tours you guys should be releasing…
Well, let’s hear it. Of course we want your well-reasoned insights and input! The Dead have always looked to Dead Heads for inspiration and ideas, and you’re needed now more than ever!

Alright, sounds like a good release: It is the Taper's Section gone legal. I must, however, disagree with Holy Goof. The Dead Net needs to serve all of its customers. There should be downloads, as well as, CD's. Think of those poor people in the UK, who have to pay more for shipping than the cost of the CD itself! Even if only thinking of them alone, there should be a download option all the files, including the bonus material. Greg SC

What is all the hassle about complete shows & Rhino? I was pretty pleased with the job they did on Cow Palace. I love complete shows, but I do not absolutely love everything from every show. I love the concept of the live compilations (with the exception of rehashing best of/greatest hits), its the best of the best. Next to One from the Vault and GD Movie, So Many Roads Box is one of my all time favorites. The first volume of Road Trips looks great. I have to admit I was skeptical of Rhino at first, but so far so good. The complete shows that have been released are great and I love them, but I can't stand all the complete show whining and compilation bashing. Nothing beats hearing the best of the best shows, these are not bits and pieces.Don't like what you see, then don't buy it. Simple.

Interesting indeed; love the Tour concept. For someone like me who mostly tends to listen to "my era Dead" ('88-'92) this is an excellent way to listen to some other stuff in a "best of" type way. I'm in; should be great. But definitely glad to see more full show releases coming. Thx.

A rather artistic form of splattering bits & pieces into the awaiting ears of Dead Anti-Archivists, whilst the native dancing volcanos brew yet furthur rantings from a pesimistic & yearning, formless shape-shifter from the outer reaches of the eternally expanding wasteland we know as our Galaxy.

I like the tour concept. The big hint sounds like the Winterland 73 boxset might be coming out? However, the biggest problem is that the concept of parts of shows and also from the track listing of Vol 1, makes everything seem very disjointed. Is there really a demand for this? I'll buy the first volume, but I think my interest is going to be hard to sustain. I was pretty happy with the Dicks Picks and Digital Download series which meant fairly frequent complete shows. This seems to be too much of a bunch of random curios. How much outside input did anyone do before deciding to go this route? I don't want to be too critical, but my lack of excitement about this probably isn't unique, so I am trying to be constructive.

No more Dicks Picks!Instead we get another compilation. This is exactly what I don't want. Sorry to burst anyone's bubble but there are so many great shows out there, why put out bits and pieces? Yes there's some great music on the discs but nothing beats hearing a show in its entirety, hearing the great moments in their true context. For future releases please, please try to put out complete shows.

nice marketing idear, there. just, please be sure to release some WHOLE shows, as Hunter suggested, AND definately whole runs of shows would be grate. bits and pieces of individual shows is nice, but whole shows is always much much much better in my humblest of humble opinions. and a whole run of shows from a particular venue in a particular year would be a lovely plus. AND, so long as we're talking, what about more DVD releases of Views from the Vault?? THOSE are what I really want for Christmas. peace. 1. Thank you for not forgetting about us. We love this stuff very very much. 2. Dick's Picks was truly a Head's dream come true. Its frequency and extraordinary playing was something you could really look forward to then. Boy, were we spoiled. Thanks for all 35, and one extra special thank you for #36. 3. "Don’t worry, there will definitely still be full-show releases. We’ll have more on that soon." Big Hooray!!!! but we are definately gonna hold you to this one, if not heads may roll. Can we call these Dave's Picks?? Yeah!!! Road Trips heh? Sure, why not. We love it!! Only time will tell but I'm def. seeing some light.

I am very glad to finally see something, just not sure I will like bits and pieces. Sounds like it will be very close to what we have access to via the Taper's Section. Would have preferred to see updated information on continuing to release more complete shows. Have been waiting a long time to decide how Grateful I would be now that the Rhino is Dead.

> Sorry to burst anyone's bubble but there are so many great shows out there, why put out bits and pieces? Sorry to burst your bubble of devastation with very sweet news, rdevil, but as Blair wrote a little farther up: "Don’t worry, there will definitely still be full-show releases. We’ll have more on that soon." --- So finally Rhino has gotten off its butt and is opening the floodgates, to both whole shows and compilations like this. Everyone up there knows that most hardcore Deadheads prefer whole shows, and Rhino's whole trip is delivering what passionate music geeks want. But there is also a place for a series like this, of discs where one track after another was the peak of that week, or that run, or that tour. Compliations are easy to dis in theory, but when these discs are on, they will peel the paint off your walls. I just finished writing notes for #2 in the series, and it's blistering. Plus, these discs sound great. > No more Dicks Picks! What 's truly tragic is "No more Dick!" I miss the cranky old beautiful so-and-so yelling at me through a cloud of sweet smoke to STOP FUTZING WITH TRYING TO READ THE TAPE CASES AND LISTEN! But why should Rhino call something a "Dick's pick" that Dick didn't pick? But Dick built a huge map of whole shows in his notebooks that will be guiding David Lemieux and Jeffrey Norman for years. For his friends, Dick made another kind of pick: mixed tapes. His mixes were insane and delicious, wildly mixing eras -- a '78 Scarlet > Fire followed by Pigpen, even spacy onstage chatter, favoring performances that made you think the speakers were going to burst into flames. That's the spirit of these releases, and by focusing on individual tours or runs, the music has show-like coherence -- Lemieux told me he thought of these as "dream sets." I agree with Steve Silberman that it's time we respectfully lay the "Dick's Picks" title aside. Not that we should ever stop raising our glasses and saying the magic word "Latvala!"--but it's time for something new. Some well recorded, well thought out compilations can be appropriate, especially if the comps come from shows where recordings only partially exist, technical problems marred large sections of the show, stuff like that. No, compilations should never replace whole shows per se, but they can serve as spectacular samplers. For Blair Jackson, David Lemieux and all others involved: Keep Road Trips reasonably priced with plenty of extras (bonus cds, interesting liner notes, stickers, backstage pass/ticket reprints, whatever...) and make sure that whole shows are released as well as compilations. Also, I hope that you can walk the fine line between keeping a steady stream of releases and oversaturating the market. Do those things and it will work out fine. Also, please, please, please do all that you can to make this series downloadable in both mp3 and a lossless format...this does not make it any easier to pirate copies because, lets face it, if people want to do that they can no matter what, but it will make it much easier for those of us who live far away and don't want to waste exhorbitant sums on postage, or for those who simply wish to skip the process of transfering their discs to their hard drives or portable players. In other words, keep putting out a quality product and continue to treat us as the friends and fans that we are rather than just as sources of income, and you guys will do fine. I have faith in you. Thanks, R. Gray Seoul, S. Korea

So happy to see a new release, and the promise of more to come (sooner rather than later, let's hope). I agree with the rest who would like to have complete shows available as well, good to see that is still in the works. There are gaps in the Vault, shows that weren't recorded for whatever reason, the tapes were lost or damaged, etc., so this could be one way of getting what exists of parts of shows out there. I would also like to see the music available in download format as well. Keep it coming folks! The bus came by and I got on...

It is a real pick up for me just to know what kind of material is in the pipeline. But guys, you would have saved yourselves, the mods and us 'users' a whole lot of unnecessary grief if you had let us know just a bit more about what the plans were a bit earlier. well I've gone on the record often enough giving these guys a hard time, but maybe we should give em a break here. First we are promised a 'tidal wave' of new releases including whole shows and a box set 'in the next few weeks and months'. That's the most concrete promise there has been, so lets hold 'em to it. Sure we all want whole shows, but presumably Jeffrey Norman can only work on so much stuff at a time and if I were him I too might feel more inclined to invest my time mixing highlights from many shows instead of samey and sometimes rather uninspired first set material. (btw with the bonus disc you do get all of 11/9/79 Set 2, small but significant) Shame about the end of DP and those 'what you hear is what you get' shows, but if this promised tsunami arrives of really high quality sounding whole shows then that might bring the smiles back As posted previously I think this has been handled really badly in terms of communication and respect for this so-called online community, but now they have put their heads above the parapet and made some commitments, let's not throw rocks at them quite yet btw. On the 'If I ran the Vault' forum a while back SPACEBROTHER suggested that the GDP team should create their own page/area on this site providing regular updates on the process, problems and thrills of choosing and mixing new material and also reacting to the numerous suggestions that have already been made on this site (well-reasoned or not). This would make them a bit more part of the community. Brilliant idea. Go for it!

Glad to see some new releases, even if they have zero appeal to me. Compilations have a very limited appeal to the vast deadhead community. However, if you intend to market the releases in mainstream record stores, book stores, and other outlets, compilations will work, and can be a good way to make sales. For those of us who actually visit this site (how many hits a day is that?) I firmly maintain that, in terms of live music, only COMPLETE SHOWS will make us part with our money. Having read the article above, I am keeping my fingers crossed that there will be a steady flow of complete shows for me to buy. If you release them, I will buy them. Thanks!

Hey Bought all the dicks picks! would continue to buy.... But alas snip its and partials are uninteresting to me and most every head I know... Shows and tours and runs have a flow. We were heads because of the personal interaction between us the heads and them the band. Sometime the divide in reality was large as they lived there own lives and were separate from us but at the show we were part of the Geshtault ( sorry spelling) .... Part of the band.... Not having the end to end experience really kills it for me and many many others... This is all said with the utmost respect and love. Your vault sounds better than everything that circs and if it get released it will sell and the circ sources will fall away... I'm not saying that it has to be Dicks Picks... I'm sure Dave knows what we want... How about the whole tour of Europe '72... The Acadamy Run.... Classic Winterland Runs... Spotlight on MSG... Go to University (great 70's university Gym shows.. Ala every time they played Cornell), May '77, Spotlight on the wall of sound., comparison boxes of 73 vs 74 set lists and playing styles ( take shows or runs form the consecutive years at the same venue release all the shows and write white papers on the development of the music and playing. Include comments form great tape traders and tapers). We love to read that stuff the book alone is worth the price of admission. If you involve us the community in your plans and releases and we will beat a path to the store! We don't care if they circ in SBD form or not... They will sell non the less we all always want the best quality and we know its in the vault.... Non circ sources are always a treat but don't let it stop you form creating master classes in the bands development over time... How about High res 24bit show releases! Any way... I love the band have supported you for years and will continue to This is not a rant and was written with love so take it that way Love IMINCHARGE

The packaging for the stuff I talked about above is not critical. They can come in a CD sleeve or sleeve pages...with printed out notes for a binder. You can sell the binder as well (3ring). And everyone populates the binders as the shows and releases come out with the notes. It would create a whole library to reference. Less cost in packaging and art work... You can sell accessories to it like the little things people put on there crocks alla tabs for organization. A data base plug in to track the collection. Download capability for shows controlled by the plug in to verify and guarantee copy write. Through the plug in have community connection through chat so everyone who has the interface and shows can swap ideas all through your interface... That is marketing control. That is building community. Thats the way to maximize sales and loyalty... You would be creating and controlling the 'Digital Parking Lot of tour'... Have weekly listening parties that all heads and vault people can chat over INCLUDE US! Sell Inserts for art on the site for people to buy and slide in to customize there collecting experience... I could go on and on... You have such a great opportunity. If you track the sites out there today you have a lot of bridges to re build but you will and can as in the end WE LOVE YOU! Love IMINCHARGE

I can see how this idea developed from the success of the Taper section and all the hubub at the subsequent changes (no download, etc), BUT I would like to echo the sentiment of the eloquent prior post (and Hunter & CC Joe et. al) about releases of complete shows. Having the entire show does feel right and as you listen to it, you can feel part of what the Dead were like that night, and what the audience at that time might have felt. This is not a concept that the uninitiated nor any marketing person might know about. As a taper and trader from way back (70's), I can tell you that a 'compilation' would be one of the last offerings that I would be interested in. But that doesn't mean that I won't try this '79 or others, it is just that the lure of the 'complete' show, reving up the 'time machine' and transporting to that venue on that night for that show, is imminently more compeling and sadisfying. I am very excited to see that you are working on releases, I know there are issues at play that I have no knowledge or understanding of, but please consider making sure that the spirit of Dick lives on. And that complete shows are part of the menu would be very edifying!Take care, tim PS Man alive, that IMINCHARGE has some great ideas on many aspects of what would be fun, interesting, and attractive with the both the process & product. Give that guy the 'Tour' disc as a 'thank you'. Or consider hiring him on as a consultant. Great concepts and thought process and angles that this technogezzer never could imagine!

The tour format might favor some of the best 90s material where too many forgotten lyrics or lackluster moments mixed in with the gems might make complete shows unreleasable. Bring on smoking versions of Days Between, Eternity, Corrina, Broken Arrow! And in all seriousness, there ought to be a disc that closes with "I Fought the Law"! Certain dimensions of GD humor never get enough attention, and that unbelievable choice of encore is one!

Great idea. Sure hope to see/hear something from Buckeye Lake, Ohio (known locally as Legend Valley, you had to be a Legend to play there).

OK, I can deal with this. I was beginning to wonder if Rhino had completely dropped the ball. It would be really cool if the complete shows could also be available as (reasonably priced!) downloads. I agree with Richard Starlight that the Vince years would be well suited to this format. I, for one, miss the flood of releases circa. 2004-2005....those were the days. More, please!

Hello Rhino I think that you may not be deaf but are often mute to our inquiries. But please listen to that guy imincharge. Great ideas. Hire him as a consultant. If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite. Wiliam Blake

There seem to be a lot of us here who dismiss compilations out of hand. But please. Europe '72 has always been a touchstone of mine, and if I'm not mistaken that was a compilation. Ditto Reckoning and Live Dead for that matter. So compilations do have a place in the mosaic. Everyone on this board has made a mix tape or CD of high points for a newcomer to show them what the Dead is about. And on all of our mp3 players right now, I know that we have highlight playlists. I do. Sure whole shows are nice. I own more than a few Dick's Picks and haven't regretted purchasing any of them. But let's be honest. Whole shows, warts and all are fine, but sometimes I do skip the low points. I guess that makes me a poser. But every Dick's Picks has moments that burn brightly as well. Seems to me that picking these sublime moments and packaging them together in a good sounding package is a good idea. I've ordered Vol. 1. Looking forward to the next one, too.

I think there is room for both. There are certainly plenty of shows that were awesome from start to finish and quite a few more where there were standout moments during nights with lots of train wrecks. The train wreck nights happened more frequently while Garcia was falling ill and especially from '91 on. On the other side there are tours that were inspired nightly throughout (May '77, Fall '89-Summer'90, Summers '87-'88 and '89, '69-'70, '73-'74 ect ect ect).

Continuing the release of Vault material is a great idea, and I agree that full shows would be much appreciated. But the main point... Why are we paying over $8.00 to ship a 3 disc package that should cost less than $3.00 with delivery conformation ? I buy CD's from Amazon resellers who charge a flat $2.98 for shipping and they usually arrive bearing even less than $2.98 postage. Adding an almost 50% surcharge to ship a CD is unconscionable, and I would think the ethos of the Grateful Dead should be brought to bear to mitigate these costs. Can't something be done to be a bit more fair and reasonable on this issue ??

agree with wazoo2u Happy about the release as already mentioned, but the Shipping charge to Europe is a massive $15 for Road Trip; the real cost is, according to USPS $7.20 Mods when you next take a break from dancing pls ask Rhino why this is and let us know. Thank you kindly

Very nice time of The Dead's career to choose from (1979) It is also right around the time I began attending their shows. I liked Brent's style at this time. Phil was rip-roarious, too! More of Road Trip releaeses to come I hope.

I wish people would stop complaining. On this web site and everywhere else! We are so lucky to have people who care about disseminating the Dead ethos and here we are again getting some more fantastic music but "I don't like this and I don't like that." Why don't you all take a moment to read what Alpine7784 has to say about the 11/06 show. We are being heard. The group of shows from which this compilation is comprised is a scorching stretch. I think the 11/06/79 is just a killer, as is the 11/08. I'm more than curious to hear how the transition is handled from Terrapin>Playin' to the NFA>Morning Dew - aren't you? The very guitar Jerry's playing is new, Brent is only six months into his tenure. Please, try to see the good in this stuff. Do note that there was nothing culled from the 11/05 - maybe that'll be the show in its entirety that we see/hear. What evs - I'm rushing now that I know the ball's rollin' Deadicatedly, "From day to day, just lettin' it ride, You get so far away from how it feels inside, You can't let go, 'cause you're afraid to fall, But the day may come when you can't feel at all."

Ok. I have not posted here in a while but I felt complelled to put my 2 cents worth in. I personally don't see the point in releasing bits and pieces of shows when the whole thing exists. If sound source is damaged in some way and only parts of the show exist well then I get it. I believe that each Dead show should be savored like wine- meaning it should be listened to from begining to end it its entirety. But, hey I am a passionate guy about a lot of things and this is one of them. However, I have leanred over the years that the Grateful Dead meet the needs of everybody because there are wide varieties of interests. I know this because on the semi-old message boards (Groupee) I posted a question about "favorite Dead year". There were some fascinating responses to this. So what I am saying is that although I will not buy this release it is good that it meets the needs of some fans and it is nice to see a new release even it doesn't appeal to me. All that I ask (beg if necessary) is that can there please be a future releases that comprise whole shows. Heck, start a poll now and let us vote on a few shows or give us list of choices and let us vote on them. Rick Do or do not; there is no try.

I agree that this format offers an opportunity to both include complete shows while allowing everyone to contribute different ideas and unique memories from the era. From an earlier post, some of the albums that really got me on the bus in the first place were compilation albums like Europe '72, Reckoning and Live Dead. I hope Rhino will include submissions of goodies by Deadheads from dead.net in the packaging. As far as preserving my memories through different eras, when I purchased The Grateful Dead Family Album (book), I found myself stuffing different touring artifacts from different eras among sections of pages which corresponded with the topic in that section. This included tickets, setlists, photos, newspaper articles, Leaves from my favorite pot plant, etc. The ’79 era is a good choice. I seem to recall a seriously jamming set from Cape Cod Coliseum on 10-27-79 which included the return of the Caution Jam. I also remember a smoking set from the Stanley Theatre in Pittsburgh on 12-01-79 with an awesome Jack Straw > Sugaree (I don’t know if this compilation will extend into winter) Either way, Its all good ! Peace :-) ))))

Hey Deadicated.... They are asking for opinions... :-) If I were trying to sell a product which I do... I would value any input from my customers and the market place... In all Dead heads became accustomed to the way things were... Asking anybody to change ain't easy. It doesn't mean that things could not be better if they were different. In the digital age where the competition is high for mind share, it is epically important to let people shape there experience or they will go elsewhere. That is not harsh, just economic and market reality... The lessees of this vault should know what the consumers want and how to shape there experience to better facilitate more purchases... It could be said that the one Starbucks release will eclipse and out sell all other releases 100 fold or more... Why should they release anything else but christmas records! How do record labels or any e-tailor maximize mind share, retention and face time.... They do it by delivering value beyond the actual product. The loyalty to the branded value is the key... I for one believe that the communal experience and content with the ability to interact with others and the content at the same time is key to success.. Others might disagree. As for the 'Complaints,' shipping cost is a valid point if it causes someone to not buy from the site and go elsewhere... Profit margin goes down... In the end forums are for just this, discourse and debate, not solely for ass kissing or positive I'll eat anything vibes. In the end if an ass deserves to get kissed it should ROFL... I think to a poster on this thread we all appreciate the work effort and releases of anything but we know what we want, what we don't and what we will not buy ... These discussions serve as a plea to get it... Its mutually beneficial. Love always IMINCHARGE
