Rex Foundation
Greetings Everyone...
I am the current president of the Rex Foundation Board of Directors. The Rex Foundation continues to plan events throughout the United States ranging from the annual large shows to Black Tie Dye Balls to intimate music and special events.
The money Rex raises through events, grants from other Foundations, and individual donations is granted to organizations doing good work in the arts, health, environment and social services. Rex continues to "Further a Tradition of Grassroots Giving" to organizations who fall under the radar of normal funding sources.
Rex continues the process of enhancing our web site to provide information about the grantees and to provide audio, and soon video, about Rex events both past and future.
I encourage you to join the Rex mailing list. You will receive information about forthcoming Rex events, grantees and programs. We mail an annual report and several newsletters throughout the year.
Get on board the Rex Community Caravan... it is coming to a town near you!

Is there any way to get The
Can I donate through auctions on ebay through Missionfish? If not, is there any way to get The Rex Foundation to be approved by Missionfish? I think that's the only way that I can list a charity auction for it on eBay.

Missionfish
mindbender... I am not familiar with Missionfish but will investigate what it is. Please tell me more about it.
Rex will be instituting online auction's to coincide with future live events that incorporate auctions at pre-concert receptions.
missionfish
Here's the link to it: http://www.missionfish.org/
It's basically a secure way on ebay to ensure donations actually get to the non profits, and don't get pocketed by the seller. ebay will cancel a charity/non profit auction if it doesn't go through missionfish.
*EDIT*
Looks like Rex Foundation was registered recently. You guys must've just gotten approved within the last couple weeks, because I tried to donate an auction a month or two ago, and Rex Foundation wasn't listed as an option to donate to.
Here's the new Rex Foundation Missionfish page:

Looks like someone put a couple big ticket auctions which donate a small % up. Although not as pricey, I'll try to list some fern fossil auctions soon & donate 100% :)
Kudos to Rex Foundation!
Mission This!
mindbender... thanks for the links and explanation. I am not sure who signed up Rex but am glad someone did. I will investigate who it was. Missionfish looks to be a viable way for non-profits to participate in the online auction scene. I am also on the board of the Black Rock Arts Foundation and we utilize auctions at events as a way to raise money. I will look into setting up an account for that Foundation as well.

rex foundation auction
Just listed a small fern fossil on eBay... Click here for the auction
100% will go to Rex Foundation.
I didn't go through missionfish because I learned they charge a %, plus wanted my cc#, etc....plus ebay and paypal still charge their fees, too! Geeze, everyone's gotta get their cut I guess?!?!? Anyways, I just listed a small/medium bold white fern slab and started it out at a buck to test the waters. I will cover the shipping, and if need be, the paypal fees.
Because I didn't go through missionfish, the auction says nothing about RF, but I figured I'd post it here to at least alert a couple people who may be interested in donating a small affordable amount and want a little something back.
Any probs or questions, shoot me an email at info@earthfragments.com

Rex at Summer Festivals
Rex Foundation will be at almost all of the summer festivals in the form of the Rex Jam. The Rex Jam happens when a band such as Ratdog or Everyone Orchestra will announce the Rex Jam then play a couple of tunes while people circulate the crowd with buckets collecting money that will be donated to the local school music programs.
The Rex Community Caravan is also building steam with bands getting on board to perform a few shows on their tours. Dark Star Orchestra designated their fall 2007 west coast leg as a Rex Community Caravan tour. One dollar from each ticket went to the Rex Foundation totaling $16,000 that was donated to grantees designated by DSO. Check the Rex web site for details.
Are you in a band? Would you like to get on board the Rex Caravan?
Plans are in the works to celebrate the Rex Foundation's 25th Anniversary at the end of the year. Sign up at RexFoundation.org to be informed when tickets are announced.
which reminds me
the most recent in my series of articles on Rex grantees is about Youth Movement Records, which it turns out is not far from my house in Oakland. These folks completely blew me away, in a very good way, and I recommend checking them out!
Keller Williams-Grateful Grass benefit download
and while I'm thinking of it, because I just interviewed the dude the other day-- back in 2006 Keller Williams, along with SCI's Keith Mosely and Yonder Mountain's Steve Austin, did a show at the Fillmore in Denver, consisting of bluegrass renditions of Dead tunes.
The result is now available as a download benefiting Rex. Details here.

Black Tie-Dye Ball in NYC 11/29/08
The Rex Foundation brings its special mix of fun and fundraising back to New York City by throwing a Black Tie Dye Ball with the band Dark Star Orchestra on Saturday, November 29th at the Nokia Theater.
For the Grateful Dead the music came before the money (and because of this the money usually followed), and the Rex Foundation – originally funded by direct contributions from the Dead – has relied on fundraising events organized around this same principle. Says Foundation Executive Director Sandy Sohcot, “benefit events are a great way to connect the musical community to grassroots philanthropy, furthering a tradition that began at the first Grateful Dead Rex benefit in the spring of 1984.”
According to Carolyn Garcia, Rex Foundation board member and wife of the late Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia, “There is a very special community spirit that happens at these Rex events, where everyone – the musicians, fans, venue operators, promoters – enjoy connecting around music, having fun together while helping support worthwhile grassroots non-profits.”
The Rex Foundation has distributed $8.4 million in grants to over 1,000 programs across the U.S. and internationally since forming in 1983.

Stanley Mouse poster!
I must bang the drum a bit because in celebration of the Rex 25th Anniversary Stanley Mouse himself has done a poster I really love (and just phoned in my order, and I'm not a great buyer of posters). It's a limited edition so just making sure it's one everyone's radar:

And this is probably a good time to direct your attention to the fine Rex posters in our very own GD Store as well:

Rex Jams/Rex Musical Caravan this summer
Dear Friends,
We are pleased to once again have Rex Jams at the upcoming All Good, 10,000 Lakes and Gathering of the Vibes summer festivals, where the funds raised during the jams support local area high school music programs. The Detroit Lakes High School Marching Band was reactivated because of the 10,000 Lakes Festival and Rex Jam support of the last two years! Click here to learn more about each festival and the Rex Jams. We look forward to seeing you!
On August 1st, supporters of the Rex Foundation are presenting A Very Jerry Evening in Indianapolis, Indiana as a Rex Musical Caravan event in honor of Jerry Garcia. Check out these details and tell your friends in the Indiananopolis area to enjoy a great night of music.
Speaking of friends, Dark Star Orchestra is once again setting out on a month-long DSO Rex Caravan Tour of the West, from September 23 to October 17th. As you'll see on our website write-up, we're planning a Black Tie-Dye Ball on Friday, September 25th at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland to celebrate the Tour.
Check out the video recently done at the Rex office, featuring me and Rex Board members Carolyn Garcia and Nick Morgan, where we describe the positive impact of the Rex Jams and Musical Caravan events. Our main message is that your support, whether as direct contributors, musicians putting on Caravan events, or fans at festivals and other Caravan events, adds up quickly to make it possible for Rex to provide the seed grants to non-profits doing such important work. We crossed the $1 million in grants since beginning our renewal because of you!
Looking forward to seeing you this summer, with thanks,
Sandy Sohcot
Executive Director
Video: Rex Foundation Conversations
Dr. Really recently got out the video recorder and captured Sandy Sohcot and me doing a little mini-interview about Rex.
In essence, Sandy's recapping the last eight years: why Rex was revived after the dissolution of the band, what we've been up to, who supports us and what everyone's up to.

Student scholarships
Good day,
Does the foundation host any scholarship awards? My daughter is amazing and starting Sonoma State in the Fall '23. How can she apply?
Rex does not grant scholarships per se
And also there is no grant application process. Most of the grantees are small grassroots organizations (like, recently, the Trombone Shorty Foundation) and now-huge organizations such as the Innocence Project that were small grassroots groups when they received grants. Visit rexfoundation.org for lots more info. Congratulations to your daughter!
