This show is a sequel to GDH 241, posted last week - more of the 1970 reels brought to me by Alan Mande and Mark Morris in 1994.
This is a wonderful, rich "Dark Star" that passes through a jam on the theme of the Youngbloods' "Darkness, Darkness" and also a nice "China Cat" jam. The rest of the sequence is in GDH 312, which we'll post next week.
Also included are two songs that Phil Lesh introduced to the Grateful Dead repertoire in 1994: "Childhood's End" and "If the Shoe Fits."

The tardiness of the post is entirely my fault. I'm traveling. I failed to get the text file over to Rhino before I left town, and I wasn't able to get online until late on Wednesday.

This was my very first GDH
One day, way back in September 1994, while scanning through the radio stations, I happened to hear an adverstisement for The Grateful Dead Hour radio show. I felt someone had just dropped a big gift in my lap. I had been a fan of the band for about a year and knew virtually nothing outside of their studio albums and the (relatively) few live releases out at that time. The Dick's Picks series had not really gained momentum yet, and it was still a year before I'd discover tape trading and the Internet.
The Grateful Dead Hour has led me to so many fantastic shows that I may not have otherwise heard. 9/19/70 was but the first. Thanks!
ps - 9/19/70 is always near the top of the list when people ask for recommendations of what shows to get. That Darkness>China Cat jam in the middle of NFA is one of my all-time favorite GD moments.

Great anecdote.One day I had a huge stack of newpapers in my living room. I was waiting for a friend to come over to pick me and the newspapers up to go to the recycling place. (She had a car and I didn't). She was late, and I was sitting there bored waiting for her to show, so I randomly pulled a section of a newspaper out from the center of the stack. It was the entertainment section and just so happened to be the page of that section that listed weekly music programs featured by local stations. I saw with amazement that one of them carried the GDH. I knew of the show but simply wasn't aware it was airing where I lived at the time. Talk about a gift falling in to one's lap!
The point about the DP series and the Internet being not fully up and running at that time was a great one. The GDH was a real lifeline at the time.
My first was #221. I remember #311 and remember just being staggered by the power of the music, by the Dark Star.
Don't know why 2/13/70 gets all the ink where '70 Dark Stars are concerned.

Great new Dead Hour posted....
You know, I know I was at the 1994 Eugene Show as well as all of the
Eugene shows in the 90's,
but I have to admit I totally do not remember the song,
Childhood's End, so thanks for postin it.....
Of course, as great Grateful Dead shows went, sometimes
you would wake up in the morning after the show,
not remembering exactly what all they played,
but you knew it was really good!!!!! and you just wanted to find the
way to get to the next show.....

Bob Kelly-- Tom Kelly always not fadeaway... thanks David for so many fine shows... as stated before this dark star is one for the ages...the 9/19/70 show is a must have for sure , I had not listened to these tapes(yes tapes) in a wile they crackle with energy so good.. I was not real high on the phil tunes at the time but looking back you could say at least he was making an effort to push the band foward...thanks again David.. I used to tape dh hour every week on old wnew in ny.. and turn my brother Tommy on to your stuff all the time.. after he was killed on 9/11 ..I have saved his entire collection.. many dead head hours I had sent him..fare the well

Listening to this made me go check out 9/20/70 and the stellar New Speedway Boogie. I think this was the last time thay played it until breaking it out out in 91. I've often wondered why this song fell out of the rotation as it is one of my favorites. Keep up the good work and thanks for the music.
