This was at Southwestern? college, on a football field. I got in the Phil zone, somehow, and was knocked out! His bass sound, and creativity, playing with the rhythm, his timing, each time I thought I knew what or when he'd play, he throw a curve-ball and kept me guessing. Plus thumping the turf under my feet. Of the under 20 shows I saw, this was the only one I really got in Phil's zone. Memorable!

We camped somewhere close to the venue the night before and we could see the US/Mexico Border towers glowing in the distance.I loved it when the Dead played a small casual place, and this was about as small and casual a place as I can remember. All 3 or 4 of the local cops were laughing at and with the circus of Heads rolling in. The "On The Border" t-shirts being hawked had a skeleton Pancho Villa with six-shooters. The venue was a small dusty college athletics field with low bleachers on the side (I've seen bigger high school fields). Just a low stage and the PA gear. Nice temp in the air. Pal Marshall lugged in his Betamax recorder for a nice early DAT audience audio recording. The boys played a short punchy cowboy 1st set with Alabama, West LA Fadeaway, and Smokestack into Deal. 2nd set also short, well played and punchy with a nice Scarlet>Fire and She Belongs To Me. Eventually we get Truckin' into Comes A Time and bringing it all home with a rousing Around And Around. The end comes, short set, everybody prepares to scream for an encore, but not before somebody in the band (or even the road crew) must've said "Waaaaaaiiiiiittttttttttt a minute!!!! We haven't done drumz yet!!", so suddenly we're all wrenched back into the midst of a second set! Way funny! Out of Drumz into a meaty little US Blues and Satisfaction and Brokedown encore to send some home for Monday work and some back to continue camping on a late Sunday afternoon.
