In the New York Times for June 13th, the Pentagon proclaimed that Afghanistan holds almost one trillion lira - no, sorry, that's one trillion dollars - in hitherto-unknown mineral wealth. Allow me to offer these revelations: (1) Paris Hilton actually is Albert Einstein, with a wig. Think about it - you've never seen them together, have you? (2) The Moon is made of green cheese. Specifically, a lovely Camembert, slightly fruity, that goes very well with cabernet. (3) While you were at work today, someone broke into your house, stole everything, and replaced it with an exact duplicate (apologies to Steven Wright). $1 trillion dollars in mineral wealth in Afghanistan. What a lame excuse for a lame excuse. But the interesting thing is that the Pentagon felt it necessary to serve up this fevered imagining. Why? Because they say that they need another $33 billion for the war by July 4th, or, or, or, I don't know - they just say that they need it. And for once, Congress isn't falling all over itself to give the generals whatever they want. So get ready to hear about lithium in Afghanistan, oil in Iraq, and diamonds in your bathtub. With 14 million Americans out of work, support for endless war is crumbling. People want an America that is #1 in health, #1 in education, #1 in quality of life, not #1 in number of foreign countries occupied. Send an e-mail to your Member of Congress. Ask him or her to oppose the "emergency supplemental" for more and more war. Hope. Change. How about some peace, for a change? Courage

It didn't appear that the actors were at all drunk and it was an unusual way of presenting a rivalry of scientific peers 100 years ago. Who would have though? Tesla was an electric Jesus and Edison was his own evil twin. (Whoa, I'm freaking myself out here)

I love the way the actors do their lines too, in this "Drunk History" to the cadence of the drunken narrator. I've always liked John C. Rilley ("Walk Hard" is awesome) but this propells him to a new level for me. And I was once a regular contributor over on rottentomatoes.com where a few of us talked of the possibility of a new bio for Ole' Nikola and someone mentioned Crispin Glover (if memory serves - which it doesn't more times than not anymore) playing a part of one kind or other. I would have loved a more legit version of a Tesla bio but in some ways I think this 5+ minute video is perfect.

Grtud - tapped into this just recently too. The 17yr olds were laughing their asses off and I was curious. Man, I love how the actors mouth the drunk narrator's words. This is my fave so far, though I like the Cera Alexander Hamilton as well. Franklin is too graphic for me! "I'm inventing electricity, and you look like an asshole!"

Browsing the GD store looking for gifts, I saw this: http://store.dead.net/d%C3%A9cor/bolt-bird-feeder My wife's a backyard birder, and I thought, hey, may as well take a look at it. For $125 (really?) I immediately passed on the idea of buying it...but the more I looked at photos, the more it looked more like a bird-injuring device than a feeder. Am I nuts, or do the bolt points look positively lethal? It's not advertised as such, but maybe it's an attempt at a "squirrel proof" feeder...the mechanisim being, impale them if possible.

But if you are reading this, it may mean that I've been released from posting limbo. It was a strange place to be hanging out for the past couple of weeks, nice to see the light of day. If you're not reading it, well that just means that I'm still a 50 percenter, half my comments get posted, half don't, and I never know which will and which will not. Test, test. Is this thing on?

Rode 56 miles on a bicycle yesterday, the last 25 of which in constant rain. The last 20 of which with a flat front tire. Not too shabby for an old fart, eh? In golf there is this concept of "shooting your age" (or lower.) Does cycling feature the concept of "riding your age" (or higher?)

Happy New Year to you all!!!!! Looking forward to a new year as last year completely drained me, the good and the bad,(I had a hard run.) I still believe there is more positivity out there than negativity. I believe that there is more ying than yang, but somehow the ying and the yang always equal out to be about 50/50. I have lost more friends this year, but as you grow older this becomes a common occurrence. Unfortunately i am only 36 and my former circle of friends knew, and still know how to run it hard. I have learned more and covered more ground this year , but the year of the rabbit will not have run its course until mid January. I will miss my fellow soldiers of the night who have fallen in 2011 and in the former. Me I am still on the road and heading for another joint and have a cocktail in hand and the music is most likely too loud. Have been spending some time back in the States in south Florida on the water, any heads in the Fort Lauderdale area? Strange being back in the States after being away for so long, I was in Myanmar for the last week and I had a similar feeling, but there is no place like home. Happy New Year!!! .

Moment by moment goes inching by so slowly we can't feel it, only see it in the grey and white hairs and wrinkles. So sad is impermanence. Those we care for, a few more gone every year. And yet this day we choose to party and forget we are moving closer and closer to death at the rate of an avalanche. Surely it is a day for praying and doing good rather than getting wasted, singing and dancing. Anyway, don't let that bus hit you when you cross the street. You may have more than a few regrets when your life passes before your eyes...

I'll not pay heed to 'gonzo's advice: Samantha Fish is playing the blues at Llywellyn's Pub tonight and I have a table adjacent to the stage. An Irish New Year toast is at 6pm central, with a Kansas toast at midnight. I'll race home afterward to catch Furthur on XM Sirius!!

oh do please lighten up Gonzo! Put on a party hat and do something fun and crazy. We know about all that shit and now and then its nice to turn your back on it. All over the world there are people a lot less fortunate than any of us bringing together friends and family to enjoy a few hours of good company and good cheer. Who would begrudge them that? Have a great new year deadnet friends, I hope it brings joy and happiness and for those who are having a difficult time, some shelter from the storm

Shame on the both of you for chasing Lamagonzo away. Yeah, he was negative a lot of the time but he was a Buddhist like me and he knew his GOGD. He was the political life of this site. He held down the National Affairs Desk in the TATB thread and did a damn fine job. I am proud to say he is a friend of mine. His last post spoke of the suitability of his comment to this site. His second to the last post was positive, he wished you both a happy new year, but his next to the next last post was very important. The historic Buddha's last words before his Parinirvana (death) were on impermanence. He said that of all the animal's footprints, the elephant's was the largest. Of all meditations, that on impermanence is the greatest, most important. That was his point. You both had to chime in with neggie comments that made him feel really bad. He took his own words to heart and deleted his account. Thanks for chasing away a great guy who had been around 4 and 1/2 years! (explative deleted)

people's decisions to be here or not be here are theirs and theirs alone. I am sorry that Gonzo, who is a responsible adult, decided to leave, and I hope he comes back, but attempts to guilt anybody in this conversation for his response are out of line and unacceptable. He's welcome back any time he wants to come back.

Just because you know GTed and CosmicB really well and like them does not mean that somebody can not point out the obvious, as others have wanted to know the reason he left. Personal attacks are not OK. Your OPINION that this is a guilt trip is overstepping as the moderator.

"i quit my job at the helium factory...i refuse to be spoken to in that tone". for me personally, this seems a wee bit blown out of all proportion. there's no need to take sides or pit one against the other. i don't know Ted or the badger or gonzo in person, only through our witterings in the forum; all have taken the time to respond to things i've written and given their honest opinions. i'm sure gonzo realises that the post he made on New Years Eve looks a little more negative then he probably intended. i understand where he's coming from and i would hazard a pretty good guess that he wanted everyone to think a little more deeply. nothing the matter with that; i agree with him. but he has recently been posting more 'downer' pieces and sometimes that gets frustrating to read; i should know, i do it myself occasionally!! (as the badger can attest to!). so every so often others do the good service of speaking their own minds and reminding me/us to snap out of it or reign it in a little. it's all good dialogue between friends we haven't met yet. i'm sure gonzo is old enough to make his own decisions; from what i know through PM'ing him and corresponding through the topics, i reckon this little matter wasn't that big of a deal that he would truly take this all to heart. he must've been tiring of the forums a for a wee while anyways and this was just a little prompt. we all miss him and if the spacey badger and Ted (not sure why he's been dragged into this as an instigator of 'neggie' behaviour!! he only said he was going to catch a show!!), really wanted to blast someone and make them feel bad, they could have done a much better job ha ha!!! i thought badger's post was quite reasonable and wasn't a hatchet job on someone's beliefs and reason for living; he's right that a lot of people in terrible poverty in unforgiving situations make the best of it and come together to share that wonderful sense of community that makes life more tolerable. i read his post as more of a guffaw and nudge to 'lighten up' a little; nothing the matter with that. i wouldn't consider his words intending to "chase away a good guy". that's a little overly dramatic. gonzo will be back when he's ready i'm sure. if buddhism is so close to everyone's hearts, then surely using it to forget and not worry about such triflingly inconsequential matters as this is one of it's purposes. and remember, mary is not 'just' a moderator. she can have opinions too!! she is allowed! lets move on folks and put behind all this silly tosh. life's too short.

Well I certainly had no intention of driving Gonzo away and am not convinced that I did….my post was only meant to be a mild riposte to the bucket of icy water he was pouring over the festive season and our collective futures. If you post stuff like that then surely you must be ready for a response, and I really don't think mine was nasty. Gonzo may be a Buddhist, but I don’t see whow that comes into this…it certainly hasn’t stopped him posting some pretty combative and provocative stuff in this place at times, and facing down some strong reactions. Based on that, I assumed that he was big enough to take an amiable poke in the ribs and cheer up a little. If he wasn’t then I am sorry, maybe it is that Brit sense of humour going astray over there again, or perhaps inadequate skills in amateur psychology. You know Gonzo has threatened to quit many times before…I am sorry he is not here, I enjoy his contributions and I hope he comes back.By the way Anna, if not me then I think you do owe Ted an apology, his comment was a powderpuff compared to mine. Also accusing Marye of favouritism is unfair….I am confident she would be as quick to set me right if necessary as she would anyone else. Also, before anyone suggests it, I did not pay Jonapi or provide him with any other favours to write his last post.

Nobody asked for it, but am going to say it anyhow. Not right, and not fair Anna!! Gonzo's decision is his own resposibility, and his alone. I think your going after specific people, and especially your accusations agaist marye are in poor taste. Gonzo could have done several things, talked to Badger directly about how he felt, being the first one. As you said, he has been communicating for many years on this forum, and if he is that quick to take offence and withdraw...that is his own choice. Nobody MAKES anybody do anything!! Such accusations are childish.

That's what I get for not showing up here often enough. I always found his posts amusing and thought-provoking, even if frequently acerbic and occasionally moribund. How can you tell what "good" means without the intermittent dose of "bad?" And a special note of thanks to TL for bringing up one of the very few universal truths I've discovered in life: Nobody ever makes anybody anything. People always do exactly what they want to, given their perception of their alternatives. All power is given and cannot be taken by any means other than consent. Nothing can spark debate faster than declaring anything as "The Best." Thank you for reading this post!
