it starts again this evening! if you read this between now and this evening, please chime in with a preference - do you want everything from Sept 18 forward, or pick up from today? either is fine with me, and I'm leaning towards the former, but if anyone feels strongly either way, i'd like to hear it! thanks.

The background: This has been a Well tradition for some years now. The files were first compiled by former Well user Dave Blount, who turned his set of 366 files over to me when he left there. I post this list each morning, and it always generates a lot of talk. And sometimes we tell each other the same stories year after year... Set highlights and adjectives always up for debate - some are my highlights, some are Dave's, some are gleaned from other Well posts. So. Today is June 12. On this date in Deadhead history: - In 1967, the Grateful Dead played the Cheetah in New York City. - In 1970, the Grateful Dead played the Red Vest in Honolulu. - In 1976, the Grateful Dead played a great show at the Boston Music Hall in Boston, MA. The Dancin>Around>Sugar Mag>US Blues>SSDD is excellent. - In 1980, the Grateful Dead played the Portland Memorial Coliseum in Portland, OR. - In 1984, the Grateful Dead played Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, CO. - In 1987, the Grateful Dead played the County Fairgrounds in Ventura, CA. - In 1991, the Grateful Dead played the Charlotte Coliseum in Charlotte, NC. - In 1992, the Grateful Dead played the Knickerbocker Arena in Albany, NY.

710 is still standing, but they put up a big ass iron fence in front of the steps... (not that I don't understand or appreciate the reasons why...) the street kids of the Haight these days are a far cry from the old days if I do say so my damned self. peace. Today is June 14. On this date in Deadhead history: - In 1968, the Grateful Dead played their first show ever at the Fillmore East in New York City. Good show, too bad there aren't better tapes. - In 1969, the Grateful Dead played the Monterey Performing Arts Center in Monterey, CA. - In 1976, the Grateful Dead played the Beacon Theater in New York City. Another good show, great H>S>Frank. - In 1980, the Grateful Dead played the Spokane Coliseum in Spokane, WA. - In 1984, the Grateful Dead played a great show at Red Rocks in Morrison, CO. Excellent second set with a hot Shakedown and a good Dear Mr. Fantasy out of Playin'. - In 1985, the Grateful Dead played the Greek Theater in Berkeley, CA. Another good show, despite the technical interruptions splitting the first set. - In 1987, the Grateful Dead played the County Fairgrounds in Ventura, CA. - In 1991, the Grateful Dead played a fantastic show at RFK Stadium in Washington DC. The first set has a nice Big River>Maggie's and the second set is a masterpiece. H>S>F, Estimated>Dark Star, good Stella>Lovelight and a great Baby Blue encore. Not to mention the nice temperatures and no humidity, a DC June rarity. [View from the Vault II] - In 1992, the Grateful Dead played a good show at Giants Stadium in E. Rutherford, NJ. So why is such a cool topic so buried on the website? Methinks this should be on the home page...just a suggestion

I think bookmarking any particular topic that one doesn't want to navigate to is the way to go. I wouldn't call this one 'buried' in the website, but is equally accessible with every other cool topic. And also, as long as there are New Posts, it'll be towards the top of All Recent Posts section.

Today is June 15. On this date in Deadhead history: - In 1967, the Grateful Dead played the Straight Theater in San Francisco. - In 1968, the Grateful Dead played the Fillmore East in New York City. - In 1976, the Grateful Dead played the Beacon Theater in New York City. The second set has a nice run of Stephen>NFA>D>Stella. The FOTD>Dancin>Wheel>Sugar Mag>Scarlet>SSDD is great as well. - In 1985, the Grateful Dead played the Greek Theater in Berkeley, CA. Garcia's voice is pretty froggy, but the music is great. Good China>Rider, nice Terrapin and the transition from Space into The Wheel is beautiful. - In 1990, the Grateful Dead played the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA. H>S>F to open the show and a nice Scarlet>Fire to open the second set. This is one of the better shows of the summer, and it was a pretty damn good summer tour. - In 1992, the Grateful Dead played Giants Stadium in E. Rutherford, NJ. - In 1993, the Grateful Dead played Freedom Hall in Louisville, KY. - In 1995, the Grateful Dead played Franklin County Field in Highgate, VT. A total fucking disaster. A year after a really nice experience at Highgate (nice weather, casual atmosphere, decent show), tour rats decided that paying money for tickets was for suckers. Gates got ripped down, port-a-potties got knocked over (with people in them), nitrous tanks were everywhere, dogs running loose....a total nightmare.

I went to the Ventura Fairgrounds when they played on my birthday (12th)! After the show my friends the Purpl Turtlz played on a flat bed truck, and my other friends had an ice cream cake that I had to be led to because it was a surprize and they sprayed me with silly string!! The we watched cartoons on the screen in the horse corral eating ice cream cake....I also remember the Red Rocks Shows that they played on my b-day....oh what fun we had. Met some of my bestest friends there. Nothing like a Dead show on your birthday, camping out and hanging with good people. Ahhhhhhh. Life's too short to be blue...

Happy anniversary. and happy birthday. I missed my birthday show twice despite best efforts to go, in '72 and again in '76 (when they did the Dew as the friggin' encore, much to my dismay!). was finally going to get one fall '95 at my hometown Spectrum. damn.

Today is June 16. On this date in Deadhead history: - In 1974, the Grateful Dead played the State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, IA. One of the best Eyes of the World. - In 1985, the Grateful Dead finished up a good three-night run at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, CA. - In 1990, the Grateful Dead played Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA. LTGTR>Truckin'>Touch of Grey to open, final Big Boss Man and a first set closer of One More Saturday Night. - In 1991, the Grateful Dead played Giants Stadium in E. Rutherford, NJ. I thought this show was a complete piece of crap and have rued that day ever since as I met all the guys from Phish at a rest stop on the Jersey turnpike on the way, who were telling me to follow them to their gig and skip the GD. Should’ve!!! - In 1993, the Grateful Dead played Freedom Hall in Louisville, KY.

If we can't agree on the 16th, I am sure we can all agree on this one being a good show. Eyes of the World opened the show. Bruce teases Dark Star throughout the entire show. The Dark Star Jam> Truckin> New Speedway> Uncle John> Jam is very good. (and I hated the night before SO much I didn't go. damn.) - In 1992, the Grateful Dead played the Charlotte Coliseum in Charlotte, NC. - In 1994, the Grateful Dead played Autzen Stadium in Eugene, OR.

Rutherford, NJ. Bleah. Not quite as dismal as the 1994, but inconsistent sound, some terrible playing and horribly blown vocals pretty much guaranteed a stinker. Bob Dylan was excellent, however.

one for the ages, as far as I'm concerned. Over in the Shows area, we've got a post or two from folks who were actually there. Sun never went down, they said. I didn't come along till six months later, and really regret missing this show.

I had a few friends who ventured up there as well. One who I lost track of, actually, because he stayed up there. Meanwhile, I can see that doing this here won't generate conversation with all that talk happening in the Shows area. Maybe next time I have some free time (!!) I'll put some links in.

That Alpine run is forever seared into my circuits. Lordy what fun we had! Absolutely out of control scene for three days... once you made it into the gates there wasn't a cop to be seen (that all changed the next year). Big crowd from all over the country primed and ready, and boy-howdy we got some juice! The tapes just don't do it justice-- Alpine had some serious stuff happening and there are times I can still feel the vibrations of the lawn, tangible waves of energy washing back and forth over the grass as you felt that cicada buzz, that deep-rooted mushroom shiver, all that chlorophyl pumping extra O2 into the cortex... Oh it was good to be there, standing on that hill with the crowd moving under you just like the crest of a wave and you knew that things would be different better perfect soon, back and forth, in and out, driving the band as they struck the chords within the thousands of all of us, snakes of green light hissing under your feet and you fell up and into the waiting arms of that beast made manifest and up up up again until suddenly it was still. That stillness when the first click of the floodlights froze that portrait of us looking at each other as if to ask: did that just happen? And out we went. Into the gravel and campfires, the coolers and tents, the lies and sales, the laughing, the dancing, the wondering. Miles and miles of family reunion and all that entailed: the genuineness, the foolishness, the deep unreal, the t-shirts and burritos. What bliss it was to walk among you then! T'was ever thus. "I tremble for my nation when I reflect that God is just, and that His justice cannot sleep forever." Thomas Jefferson

Your intrepid reporter lost her car in the lot for the first and only time in her showgoing history. Aud, So funny to read that. I remember wandering around for a good hour or so after an unbelievable show in Hershey back in '85 looking for my friend's very large, very yellow station wagon. The best was the next day. There was a day-off between Hershey and the Merriwether shows and everyone woke up in Chocolatetown, USA staring at Hersheypark. The whole place was divided in half between the freaks and the families worried about the freaks. I bet they sold more chocolate that day than any one since. While riding the monorail, they were running ads for the park's other attractions including their zoo which had the slogan, "Discover the wonders of nature." Half the monorail car finished that line for them in unison.

How much better can you get than the Dead at the Beach?! Ok...the sound was blowing around a bit, but the scene was so cool!

The only regrets I have in life are those things that I did not do. The Oxford Plains Speedway shows are at the top of the list. And the fact that today happens to be the first day I look at this “Today in the history of GD” and it just so happens to be on that fateful day in ‘89. I was supposed to go, had a ticket, was ready and waiting. This was to be my first Dead show. My older cousin got me a ticket, as well as one for my older sister who was to go as my ‘babysitter’ since I was only 13; this was the only way my parents would let me go. To make a long story short my sister made the decision not to go (that B*tch!). Anyway, I had to wait till the following summer to see them for the first time. I have always been upset about this since they were phenomenal shows. (I haven’t let my sister forget it either, and she now regrets it as well! lol) I was thankful that my neighbor was able to get me the tapes of the show within a week but …..the dead were never allowed to come back to Maine, and I feel that I missed something really special. So, I hope you all who had the good fortune to attend it treasure your memories because from everything I’ve heard (tapes and personal stories) it was definitely one to go down in the history books of great shows. Cheers!

And to top it off, the Sullivan Stadium show in '89 on the same date was the first show I attended! Though I had no idea it was called that, it was and always will be Foxboro Stadium to me. :-)
