First, a quick background check: Barry “The Fish” Melton played lead guitar on the San Francisco scene’s first psychedelic record, and went on to play the Monterey and Woodstock festivals. His new “neo-psychedelic” release with Parisian guitarist/vocalist Stephan Missri and band is, in a word, extraordinary. It’s trippy, politically and socially conscious, and brilliantly played. Deadheads – Garcia freaks in particular – will love Melton and Missri’s flowing solos, epitomized by the Jerry-esque joyride of “Jamasutra Mantra.” Like the early Allman Brothers Band and Steve Hunter-Dick Wagner with Lou Reed, Melton and Missri create intriguing two-guitar interplay without venturing into overkill. They freak-out Hendrix-style on “Vert,” and Barry resurrects his wicked vibrato of yore for “Le Dernier Homme en Ville.” His sea shanty-cum-ecological call to arms “Shady Grove” recalls his Country Joe & The Fish era and then segues into one of the album’s best jams. International feels abound. Algerian-born Missri sings mostly in French, with a smooth, smoky voice. Rhythms and melodies seamlessly embrace rock, blues, psychedelic, Middle Eastern, and African influences. “This was truly a trans-Atlantic effort for me,” says Melton, who’s worked as a public defender in northern California. “Much of my early music was influenced by Middle Eastern music, which becomes immediately apparent were you to see me with Country Joe in the 1967 movie Monterey Pop.” Danish bassist Charles Jannic and French drummer Christophe Rossi excel at everything – hats off to these guys, as well as to Melton and Missri for their fine, fine playing and producing. Order this Seafood Records release at www.barrymelton.com and www.jamasutra.com.

Hello friends!I am new to the website, and this might be out of line but I am looking for your help. I am studying architecture, and my recent assignment was designing a post card that would describe home... This touched me at a profoundly emotional level, since I feel that I am very much "in between places": I was born and raised in Eastern Europe, but I haven't been there in about 7 years; I lived in Maryland with my husband for about 5 years, and we moved together to New England 2 years ago. We separated 6 months after the move, and I now have a roomate situation, while pursuing my degree... The past couple of years have been tumoltuous, and therefore I feel that I do not have a home... except for the music of the Grateful Dead. I was not born in a time or place that allowed me to ever see a true Grateful Dead show, but the spirit, the acceptance and the love I feel while listening to their music has trully given me the support of a family. Going to festivals and shows, meeting beautiful people and most of all beeing touched by the music have been life changing events.I regain direction and hope in life and mankind. So when it came to designing a post card describing home, I though of the Grateful Dead. This is where I need your help. If you were to write a post card to the GD, what would you say? Thank you for taking the time of reading my lenghty post, and I am looking forward to hear what you would say. Sincerely, Delia-May

I realized that I don't think any spammer has ever hit this topic. Yes, I suppose it would be something of a moderator's quandary to suddenly find a post here offering prom dresses and diet solutions, but if there were any legitimate locale for it, this would be the place. Unfortunately, they tend to post their pitches on archival photos of Watkins Glen instead...

My good friend opened a bottle and can return in upstate New York called Terrapin Bottle and Can Return (yes, named after Terrapin Station). He's a huge deadhead, so there are lots of grateful dead and furthur posters and stuff around so you'll have a better time taking your cans there than somewhere else. Its located at 4303 State Hwy 30 Amsterdam, NY 12010 in the Owl's nest plaza - in front of an archery place. If you see a tackyass lingerie shop you've gone too far. But I'm not from there... I suck at directions so here's the number 518-842-0300 Tell him Chicago Steph sent you! Thanks a bundle.

I have a lithograph of the black & white "Banyon Tree". It's framed and in new condition. Very beautiful work, Jerry did. I love the piece to death but must sell for financial reasons. I can't afford to have it put on eBay, since everyone who looks questions its authenticity. Craigslist has no bites...not sure how many deadheads who love fine art shop on there. It's a longshot, but if anyone is slightly interested I'd love to tell more :) thanks

I have a friend who was given a Bear Head hookah. He was told that this belonged to a stage hand from the 1960's-70's and that a member of the Grateful Dead gave it to him. There are a couple of symbols in the pottery, but no markings. Does anyone recognize this? Thanks. Hello everyone, I am currently selling a whole lot of CDs, vinyl, DVDs and video on my Discogs site - http://www.discogs.com/seller/jona830 Have everything from Jazz, Dub, Rock, Trance, Blues, Downtempo, Dubstep, Pop and everything inbetween!! Lots of recent releases, limited numbered editions, rarities, old classics, the lot! Anyone who is interested from the Dead.net forums, or even if you're a pal of someone who is a member, or just an inquisitive explorer! email me, either through Discogs or message me through Dead.net and i'll make sure you get a great discount, every time. Only the exact postage for shipping is charged, nothing more; I have over 640 ratings at 100% positive feedback; i'll also include freebies etc. if i have something related that you are buying. Spreading good music with that Deadhead, Kynd interaction is the most important thing for me. I always want to turn people on to good stuff, so as a music lover, your happiness is my only concern. Let's spread some High Times! (Feels real cheap and crude to be discussing money when it concerns music; especially on Dead.net; makes me feel like taking a shower!, but i guess anyone who would purchase from me is contributing funds to my wife and i's relocation to Japan, where an Organic Bakery/Grocery business is what we hope to open. "From the earth to the friends we haven't met yet". That and regular trips to Yukotopia, THE Deadhead bar/live venue in the Tokyo area!). Our heartfelt thanks to anyone who reads this and the Dead.net Forum for the opportunity. jonapi.

Picked a good time to go, didn't we?!!! That old saying about eating carrots makes you see in the dark could well turn out to have some truth in it! Well, glow in the dark..... I'm desperate to sell this lithograph I have of Jerry's. It's called the "Banyon Tree" and is in mint condition, framed, #273/500 hand-signed. Bought it in New Hope in 2002 and am looking to get back what I payed for it, which was roughly $2,000 (or I'll take the highest offer!) Even if you, personally, don't want to buy this (or can't afford to) it would be appreciated if the word-of-mouth could get around. I'm desperate....about to get kicked-out of my house and I have 3 dogs and a daughter. I need the money to pay off bills and my rent. If you have any questions, or would like some pictures, please email me at janellpeters@live.com Thanks!

I don't run a store, but I do run a weekly poetry slam in San Antonio, TX (my day job is teaching) and every year my poetry venue sends a team of 4 poets to the National Poetry Slam to compete against 300+ other poets. This year, we are struggling for funds because of the economy and because SA's art budget was slashed and thus so were our funds. I also help run PuroSlam Working, an organization that works with Non-Profits and Charity Organizations so that we can give back to SA what they give to us (both can be found on facebook as puroslampoetry and puroslamworking). Anyway, in order to raise money to help get our poets to Nationals this year (Boston), we have set up a PayPal donation center on facebook. If you have the time, the money, and the passion to support local arts in a city that may not be local to you, follow the link, donate a couple bucks, and forever hold the appreciation of four struggling artists in the Alamo City! Thanks for the indulgence! http://apps.facebook.com/fundrazr/activity/e4b4fb28ffb54b9b9269bb3f78f1… J.T. Gossard http://thehallucinogenicbible.blogspot.com/

I fell in love with the Dead and biking at the same time.Gary Fischer Hoo Koo E Koo Dead Bones. 1995 Limited Edition 15.5 frame. Any wear on the bike is from time, not use. I bought this new and I rode it twice in the mountains of banff. When Jerry passed I put the bike up in my house on display with my other Dead memorabilia. Over the years, after 4 children and 8 moves, I still have my bike. To me this bike was symbolic of everything about me, my true Dead spirit of roamin the open road with an open heart. I am in my last year of nurse anesthesia school and crunching numbers to pay the last bit of my massive tuition. I have hung on to my bike to the bitter end. Unfortunately, it is time to sell it. I have had multiple offers but no one who would love and appreciate this bike for the spirit it exemplifies. The frame is inscribed the golden road to unlimited devotion... Its time to let my bike go "So take off your shoes, child And take off your hat Try on your wings And find out where it's at" I will send pictures to any interested buyer. It is in Minneapolis. tmalloryrn@gmail.com , 702-217-4808

9 months of Unemployment have forced me to start selling some of my treasures. This is one of them: a 18" x 24" black and white photograph of the band from the sixties in Golden Gate park. This print was done in the 80's and was left in our communal house basement in a pile of junk that I had the fun task of cleaning out. At least this particular dirty job had a great reward when I found this collection of prints! I am interested in serious offers, and I wanted to post it here in front of some true fans before I post this on Ebay. I have about 18 different photographs. Some have slight water damage around the edges, but would look very clean and nice if properly framed. If the bid is right I'd be willing to sell the whole collection but otherwise I'll be selling these one at a time. My profile pic is the main photo of interest. There are lots of crowd shots, a few more band shots, a Haight Street scene, and some Hells Angels shots. I am working on getting the pictures uploaded to my website, which should happen later today. Thanks for looking!

We just published a cool book that traces the "life and times" of a 1964 VW microbus, from its "birth" in a West German factory to its final resting place in San Diego. The book is told in a series of vignettes, and it's not always clear how the van figures into each section. The author, Lee Irby, has earned critical praise for his previous books, 7,000 CLAMS and THE UP AND UP. Check it out. http://www.amazon.com/The-Van-ebook/dp/B006YTO110/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qi…

Hey Now! This is the time of year I would ordinarily start planning for summer fun. This year, however, life isn't very fun:-( I'll try to make a long story short. I've been diagnosed with "Bilateral Femoral Avascular Necrosis". In laymen's terms, I've got severe degenerative osteoarthritis of the hips, and I need total hip replacement. I've been denied THREE times by Social Security and Medicaid. They say I can still work! I can barely make it to the bathroom, let alone work. I'm waiting on a hearing which could take up to 14 months! I haven't worked since 03/31/2011. My savings is almost drained and bills are piling up. I've set up a fundraising page at "GoFundMe.com" to try and get some ching. There's lots of success stories at the site, but I'm not one of them yet. I would REALLY APPRECIATE IT if someone, or group of someone's would be kind-hearted enough to help me out. ANY amount would be appreciated, I think donations are tax-deductible too. Here's a link to my page:http://www.gofundme.com/BenFranklinYoungstownOhio PLEASE consider helping a deadhead REALLY down on his luck. I'm at the end of my rope emotionally, physically, and financially!Peace, James Franklin

For 20 years I have been the owner of one of the rarest Dead memorabilla. In 1992 a combined effort between the Grateful Dead and the Olin/K2 ski Co. allowed for the release of only 1000 pairs of the original limited edition Grateful Dead Dark Star skis. I have enjoyed showing them to family and friends and looked forward to passing them down someday. It seems that day has come sooner than later. I currently reside in northern NV where things have been really bad and I have spent the last 3 1/2 searching for decent employment. I dont want to spend another day living this way. I realize the only one going to save me is me, not a job, career or boss that isnt out there. These skis are among possibly 100 pairs or less that were never mounted or skied. My intention is to sell them to a serious collector and use the money to start my own business. Soon my idea will go patent pending and will be able to begin manufacturing my little idea (takes money to make money) selling them slowly at first and picking up speed as I go. If things go well maybe I can help some other out-of-work folks in NV too. Know anyone serious about owning them let me know and thanks for reading my post.

U.S. Blues, by Ed WattsAvailable on Amazon here: http://amzn.com/1453852018 Wisconsin: 1985. When Peter Van de Carr stumbles across a body outside a Grateful Dead show, he decides that solving the murder is his last chance to save any idealism left in the Deadhead scene. The only problems are: he has no idea how to conduct a murder investigation, the cops don't want his help, and after a lifetime of drugs his mind is about as sharp as a Frisbee. As Peter stumbles toward finding the killer of the little-known victim, an obsessive taper at the shows, he brings the reader with him through the seedy and humorous underbelly of the Deadhead subculture of the mid-80's. The world of endless drugs, burnt-out disillusionment, and ever-present paranoia of the Reagan regime form the backdrop to a crime that proves to be far more bizarre than even Peter imagined . . . A hilarious addition to the stoner noir genre, U.S. Blues has enough suspense to keep you turning the pages, and enough laugh-out-loud moments to make you root for Pete and his fellow "Guinea pigs of a failed experiment."
