This was one of the final East Coast appearances by the Grateful Dead for almost two years, and is one of the longest, most exceptionally well-played shows of the entire year. Dave's Picks Archival Series Kicks Off With 5/25/77
Chances are if you’re a Dead Head you’re already well-versed in the glorious spring of 1977. Back a year since their mid-’70s performing hiatus, and fresh from recording their Terrapin Station album in L.A. with producer Keith Olsen, the Dead returned to the road invigorated and excited that spring. There were fantastic new songs (including the “Terrapin Station” suite, “Estimated Prophet” and “Fire on the Mountain”) and their older tunes seemed imbued with new vigor and vitality. Every stop of the tour, which stretched from the third week of April (beginning at the Spectrum in Philadelphia) through the first week in June (back at Winterland in San Francisco), presented some new wrinkle or interesting variation on the repertoire, as songs were moved around, unusual combinations were explored and the septet continue to solidify and mature. Which is a fancy way of saying the band was on fire—y’see, there’s a reason why this is the ninth show from that tour to be released!
The song list from 5/25/77 might not reveal much out of the ordinary (though it’s great selection of tunes), but the playing is definitely extraordinary. The first set contains outstanding versions of favorites such as “Mississippi Half-Step,” “Jack Straw,” “Cassidy” and “Lazy Lightning” > “Supplication.” And the second set is primo-grade ’77 from start to finish. The buoyant “Scarlet Begonias” > “Fire on the Mountain” that kicks things off sets the tone, but then the rest of the set is a deftly played medley starting with “Estimated” and moving into “He’s Gone,” a primal drum workout from Mickey and Bill, a heart-pounding version of “The Other One” that’s split by “Wharf Rat” (the only time those songs were played in that sequence), a joyful “Wheel,” and then a double-dose of Chuck Berry to bring it all back to rock ’n’ roll basics. Talk about a thrill ride!

read all of the posts. its my contention the whole concept of 'dave's picks' is a joke. its 'road trips' with a name change in an attempt to boost sales. many who didn't want to except my opinion responded to my posts directly, rather than give their own opinion.
if someone is going to call me out on a message board of all places, i am not going to back down.
with that said; calling people trolls is an easy way out, because it doesn't take any thought to throw mud.

i was at the deer creek show when heads tore down the fence, and no i didn't help tear it down, but i was in the pavilion with a lawn ticket. always hated the concept of lawn seats. after my first show i never sat in my assigned seat. made it all the way to the front row numerous times.

Okay... steering away from the ad-hominem attacks and "my non-Dead music taste is better than yours" stuff, I would love to insert a comment about DaP1. Someone earlier mentioned their favorite "sleeper" song of the show (Mexicali Blues).
I like the sleeper idea... In that vein, my sleeper song would be Cassidy. I tend to favor that anyway (one of those first set songs I never skip), but this one is my new favorite. I'm hearing things from Billy and Mickey I never heard (or don't remember noticing) in my old version of this show. Listen to the percussion in this version of Cassidy, it is just astounding. I've listened to the whole show once, but Cassidy four or five times. Who knew...?

There's nothing wrong with a negative opinion. But if all a poster does is stir up shit, make threads revolve around them and their "opinions" (and all the while changing their user name to make it a bit less obvious to a casual observer) then it is trolling, plain and simple.

with that said... if you haven't listened to kanye west's "my beautiful dark twisted fantasy" you have no stake in this argument. the album has received far more praise than his previous works, and it contains some really interesting samples (ie king crimson).
does 99% of today's popular music suck ass? yes, it does, but when you talk about music you haven't heard its almost as nonsensical as discussing a film you haven't seen.

Level of excellence
I'm not great at writing reviews, so anyways...I've listened a few times, and wonder where does this show rank in the Spring Tour? Not an easy question. What I find in this show is a brillant display of perfection. The first set, while not containing a large jamming vehicle of Dancin or Sugaree- the longest jams of the set are found in Half Step and Supplication- it does contain flawless, often intense renditions of nearly every song in the set. Lazy Lightning-Supplication and Brown Eyed both smoke, as does the Half Step- Jack opener. Mexicali- Cassidy- Peggy-O and Loser are perfect renditions of these songs. Garcia playing some lines in Mexicali that are about as perfect as can be. I find more of this in Set Two- The Scarlet is bouncy, and in Fire the band really begins to flex it's muscles. Estimated continues this fierce energy, and He's Gone is solid with a strong closing jam. The Drums is a powerful rhythmic display, and Jerry seems to be on the edge of explosion before Bob starts singing the first verse of The Other One. Some of the show's finest explorations are found after the first verse, and as The Other One dissolves and Wharfrat takes shape. An excellent Wheel- Around And Around ends the set like it began- with a great display of 77 intensity. This gem contains a level of excellence from start to finish that we can expect when Dave picks them. Thank You!

Reading that, or those, lists of music makers in that Battle Royal ( toyed with the verbiage, musicians?, artists?) reminds me of reading the Book of Genesis which could put one into a coma!
As the poster above said this is an excellent show. Did they do a bad show in 77? The tightness of the first set is part of it. All of that demanding studio work for Terrapin Station pays off for us in the first set and that GD spirit to 'break the chains' pays off in the second set too.
It is a solid A.
A very worthy release and great value for the $ spent.
I can not wait to open my mail box and find another gift to myself.

spring 77?
Got mine a week ago. To me, it's probably the best show and best sound of any official 1977 release so far. I admit I never quite understood the great love so many have for spring 77, but this may be the release wherein I see the light. I'm still stuck on disc 2 with phil thudding the walls of my corolla and Jer's smoldering leads. I don't get how anyone could dislike Donna's wails on Scarlet- I think they are perfect. Looking forward to going back to disc1 and digging the highly touted "Mexicali" and "Cassidy"!
Well the postie struggled
Well the postie struggled through the snow and so now I have had the chance to listen. It has been a real pleasure and I echo the positive words of others here.
As mentioned Set 1 is very played and nearly flawless. I love the Half Step opener The Mexicali Blues which normally passes me by is a revelation.
The jam out of Scarlet Begonias in set 2 is just brilliant (actually I think Donna is quite restrained) and I think the Fire on the Mountain is good too but falls away a little (there are better examples from the tour). Estimated is good as ever; the transition to He’s Gone is a bit of a disaster but once they get going it is a very strong rendition with a delightful outro into Drums. Not too keen on the fade out/in on drums but it is not a serious matter. Disc 3 has some tasty jamming, but again perfunctory transitions and I wish they would have carried on exploring a little more out of Wharf Rat. Three Chuck Berry’s in one show is one too many for me but was probably great fun if you were there.
I don't like the cover art. The booklet and Blair J's essay are good, but after telling us how amazing the theatre looks, why are there no photos of it? I like the Digipacks, but yes the card is too flimsy and the folds will tear I am sure. I am pleased that this will be rectified.
The sound is excellent throughout although it does seem a little patchy on places in Set 1. I am not sure how Betty set things up, you definitely get a great feel for the hall the PA and the crowd (did they have a mic in the hall I wonder?). As well as the irregularities in Promised Land it does sound a little compressed in parts of Set 1. What is pleasing is how well Keith comes through…he often gets lost on the 77 recordings. They still have that crisp two drummer sound that started to deteriorate in the next year or so, Phil is playing more conventionally than he used to, Weir and Garcia are in step the whole way and Jerry is on top of his game. They seem to focusing more on ensemble playing in this show, unlike in many other 77 shows Jerry does not step forward for a really big guitar work out (e.g Sugaree, Dancing, Comes a Time).
Overall I give this 8/10. Immaculately played, tight (for the Dead),nice sound, great renditions of many songs, some inspired (albeit limited) jamming, but perfunctory transitions and too much Chuck. The trade-off for paying so much attention to crisp and accurate playing seems to be that they keep within certain limits that did not exist before. But then again that means less noodling and hardly any flubs. That’s what makes 77 the last of the very best for me…from then on the crispness slowly fell away but the inspiration did not come back to replace it.
All in all a very welcome release. The next Dave’s Picks should provide a real contrast. Keep ‘em coming. Thanks.

While I'm dreaming, let's make it a 9 show Box- include St. Louis, St. Paul, New Haven, Tuscaloosa, 5/18 from the Fox and 5/4 from The Palladium. They really were at a peak in the Spring of 77. Weren't they? Or 1977 in general.
.The 80s and 90s pale in comparison to the strength of 77. Yet there were newer, and cover, songs at that time in the 80s and 90s which deserve recognition by official releases from that period. the playing at times and Jerry's voice in general may have been below par but they are still part of the history and should be given equal footing.

An opinion expressed sometimes is enough of 77- I really couldn't have enough of 77- but I understand the point. The 80's and 90's are not given nearly the recognition in terms of Releases as the 70's are. Part of it is performance level, and part of it is the availability of high quality recordings- specifically from the early 80's. I honestly don't expect to see another 77 Box Set for awhile. I'm thrilled we still have releases to look forward to, and would be as excited as anyone about an 80's Box Set. As for more 77- all good things in all good time.

DL2 spoke of this in his video chat last month. He also stated that these DVDs would be availible each. I'm looking only for the So Far /Back Stage Pass DVD up grade. Like a lot of folks, I don't need dups of all the other DVDs.
DVD Box Set
I generally love the releases that David and his predecessors have released. However, I already own 80% of the DVD's in the upcoming box set...it seems like a a real money grab to make fans repurchase so many releases so get a couple exclusive and bonus discs.
Will individual DVD's be released? If we purchase them through Shout or Factory can we receive the bonus disc?
You guys addressed the issues with Europe 72 it seems like an easy switch to offer the releases in the box set individually.

I just got a bluray player. I have most of this on VHS or DVD already. Argh. Dangling the bonus stuff is the epitome of mean. I agree with gerhard, why not release something new already instead of releasing VFTV for the 3rd time and GD Movie for the 5th time or whatever? I guess they did the cost/benefit analysis and saw they'd come out ahead going this route. I can understand it from a corporate point of view. But, man wow.
That said I have an itchy trigger finger and am waiting to see what type of other bonuses are offered before I make my final decision.

I think this is a well priced set, but I wonder who they will appeal to? Anyone who would spend $100 on GD DVDs would likely be a big fan. Most big fans will already own some of these already. So who is going to buy this? Someone who is duplicating part of their DVD library in order to get the rest? A casual fan who wants to spend $100 to buy 20 hours of Grateful Dead videos? Doesn't seem like either group will be big buyers. But I guess they have nothing to lose by repackaging and offering this, no? It's a low cost, frequently used marketing ploy to repackage a bunch of stuff that has been out in the market for a long time and try to attract a new audience. It's ok by me, but not my cup of tea.
I bought the VHS of the GD Movie back in the '80s and LOVED it. Then I got the DVD upgrade (a rare move for me). I love this movie, have probably seen it more than any other movie ever, and the bonus stuff is really good. I wish they hadn't released the 5 disc set of highlights from this run, because I think it would have been a GREAT box. Probably my favorite run of shows ever, and all should be available in super high quality since they were filming/taping for the movie. But it would be too redundant to release they run of shows after releasing the five discer, so I doubt that will ever happen.
I also own NYE '78 which is fun. I must say that the late '80s/'90s videos are fun to watch once, but I don't really go back to them like I do the GD movie or even The Closing of Winterland.

is that hey, I don't have a lot of this stuff and the price is right. And also a lot of new folks don't have any of it. But definitely a lot of people have it already, what else is new.

Hopefully the Bonus Disc is made available separately so those who already have these Releases don't miss out. This set is an amazing value for the price and the amount of material offered.
DVD's
I'm all for it and will order if it's real to get all in one box, but I will have to agree with the bluray comments. GD and Rhino really have to get up to speed with regards to this as currently there's just been GD Movie on bluray. I've been spoiled with HDCD and Bluray sound and picture quality and think it's the way to go.

I won't be getting the DVD box (because I have what I want from that list). But heck, even if I only wanted half of these these, the price is a good one.
And as Marye says, there are folks out there who are new to the Dead who might jump on this. I mean, don't we want influxes of new Deadheads, even those who (GASP!) never got to see the band live? (Or should we expect them to cater only to those who saw the band - demographically speaking, not a good idea!)
I'm real pleased to see releases that might be aimed at newer fans ("To Terrapin" being released in stores for example - it was great to see a 2-track recording getting a general release).

Well I guess it is my turn to have a bad experience with customer service. After not receiving my Calendar I reordered and it finally arrived. I wasn't as worried about that. But, when I didn't get my "Daves Picks" I became concerned. It was supposedly shipped on January 29th. It hasn't arrived. I called and let them know of my concern. They said that it would be reordered. It is supposed to ship from California. I live in California and still have not been able to enjoy this latest adventure. Needless to say I am very dissapointed. Why? I want my Daves Picks!

Still waiting to receive mine. I would love to be listening to it right now. However I have just been told that they had to reorder and will be shipped tomorrow. Now I get to wait another 12 business days. This happened in my last order. Why is it so difficult to get me my order? This is the first time I have had any trouble with getting my order. But, after reading some of the posts during the whole E72 ordering I guess I am lucky it's only happened twice. I hope I get it before Volume two is shipped. At least I have no shortage of things to listen to. I would just like to be listening to this one. Oh well....good things come to those who wait.
