One of the worst shows ever... and for good reason!
The second set started with a jam (unusual for this point in the band's history) until we noticed that Bobby was not on the stage! He appeared to start Playing in the Band, then vanished again until the Playin' reprise. (Note large number of Jerry songs in the second set, with no big rocker after the drums!)
The next night we asked the soundboard crew, "What HAPPENED last night?"
"Oh, Bobby was sick as a dawg! He was puking in the dressing room during the show!"

Totally Disagree
I hate to disagree with a fellow deadhead, but I loved this show. The fact that Bobby didn't come out for the start of the second set, makes the show unique and Jerry was jamming beautifully. Also, I may be wrong but I don't recall Bobby leaving again once he came out. Go back and listen to the show and I think you will hear Weir playing.
Also, it was only one of three times they played If I had the World to Give, a very underratad song IMHO.
I also rate this Shakedown as one of my favorites.
I do recall that the crowd was a little beat, but I loved this show.
Oh well, different strokes for different folks.
I love the jam
Unfortuately this is a show I missed, however had the boot for a long time and loved the jam in the second set. It was definately unique and I've never heard anything like since. Inf fact I hope someone can help me find a download of this show. I keep going to archive.org but they only have streaming. Will someone please help?
You CAN download the show on Archive
Check the audience recording: it has shorten files you can download and convert to wave. Rock away pal!
Can stream the SBD as well
Of the second set opening jam-> If I Had the World to Give. Show #406 over in the GDH section.
Show was good cause Jerry carried it out.
Bobby was pucking his guts out.I stll remeber Jerry just looking over at Bobby with a slight grin and shaking his head...No offese Bobby, but it was kind of funny. Sorry you didn't feel well. As I remember there was no encore. I have to say that I pucked after a show or two also, it must have been the mushrooms and wild trukey 101.
Interesting
Show's gonna be on Sirius tonight so I looked it up. Now I'm interested to hear how the rest of the band responded. I'm sure Bobby did his best to pull off the Lazy/Supplication. Did it work? Inquiring minds want to know!
if the sickness story is true,
bobby is a trooper for sure.
funny thing is, I like this show. maybe not so much after hearing about bobby's emesis episode.
killer second set!
Maybe Bobby needs to get sick more often as I rank this second set in my 1978 top 3!! Magical from the first note, I thought they were on fire with one of the best Shakedowns ever and the best of the 3 World to Give bar none!!
All I know was I was there
Prior to this I had driven to Chicago from Cleveland to see my girlfriend in 1974, then we drove to Milwaukee to see the Dead on July 4th, 1974. We picked up a hitch-hiker who informed us that the show was cancelled! So we got drinks at a bar and watched the Milwaukee fireworks over Lake Michigan. Same thing happened in '76. My girlfriend was working at some distance that summer, so I drove from the northeast corner of Ohio to Meadville, PA to pickup my girlfriend's girlfriend, and we drove down to Pittsburgh for a show at the Shrine Theater (or words to that effect) also just before the 4th of July, only to find out that it had been cancelled too! A friend of mine knew about it but forgot to tell me. Yeesh!
So this show at the Cleveland Music Hall was the first one since "the first one". Don't remember much about it except I was very poor and it was a big hassle to get there, but we made it in.
