Grateful Dead

Winterland must have been a cozy venue indeed. On the SBD of this performance, during the 'Space' segment, a woman can be heard saying off-mike: 'I'd like to take banjo lessons.' One doesn't think much of it until a voice very clearly Jerry's says, 'I don't teach anymore.' She must not have heard him well as she repeats the request. Jerry repeats as well, 'I don't teach anymore.' Check it out. Weird.

Great show to start off my career. We got there hours before the doors opened and got as close to the stage as we could. When the house lights went down, and we stood up and inched our way toward the stage, we discovered that we left our fragile smoking device behind. Of course by then it was too late. A few hours later, as we were leaving, there it was, untouched. That was the moment I became a true deadhead. Years later I heard an interview on the radio with Bobby about a show at Winterland where the crowd was clapping in time to Estimated Prophet. 7/14 time is hard to keep going.

chris barnes I heard the sondboard of this show tonight on Sirius and clearly heard the banjo lesson comment in question, very strange indeed. After that I heard an unidentifiable man's voice saying, "You are under arrest." and strange noises that sound like someone inhaling deeply. I wonder if this wasn't a case of people being picked up on mic but instead the Dead being extra trippy by adding some pre-recorded, random speaking blurbs to the space segment. This could be a case of the boys being well ahead of their time. Possible sampling pioneers? Run Dmc and Public Enemy may have been following in the Dead's footsteps. Maybe a stretch, but who knows?

I came off the road into San Francisco to find the Dead playing Winterland, with a slide show from Egypt. I'm not sure which night I was there but they introduced Francis Coppola because the Rhythm Devils were working on Apocalypse Now.

Emerging from Demureville; I totally enjoyed whichever night it was that we were taught by Hamza to do the traditional clapping. great run of shows on the bands return "home' from Egypt.. there was a lot of unique playing at these shows,, of note from the 17th,, is the long rockin jam out of Miracle, in the first set no less. A very bluezy vocal out> sweet jam from estimated..and as mentioned before, the banjo lesson chat with Garcia and someone else.. during space.. the slide shows,, sound effects.. that whole persian vibe you could almost taste it.. indeed..
