With chat rooms and not necessarily at dead.net is that the people who are shady i.e. pose threats are in fact juveniles in the 10-12 year old range. It doesn't mean there isn't a more sinister plot going on too but the majority are kids being stupid. After watching what they write for awhile it is painfully obvious what their age is.. "Here's my half a dollar if you dare .. double twist when you hit the air. Look at Julie down below .. the levee doing the dopaso"

Thank you Marye. I am sure everyone appreciates deadnet hosting the Chatroom and as Swan has mentioned, it is not an issue of permanent moderation: in general conflicts have been sorted out pretty quick there. But the lack of security makes it far too easy for those few people with bad intentions to exploit and abuse others. In fact have now discovered just how easy it is to ‘break into’ the chatroom from outside. My understanding is that Gagalive is a free internet Chatroom service that has been embedded in deadnet and that it could be hard for Deadnet to impose its own additional security on it. But I am not an expert on these things. It has also dawned on me that as long as you are logged into the CR you can scroll back through (and therefore copy/paste) all the chat from the moment you logged in. So if you stay anonymously logged on for hours or days from the outside (like some people appear to do) you may be able just to copy everything that has gone on. I was going to do an experiment to test this, but eavesdropping even for a few moments makes me feel really bad, so I won’t. If the chat record has a much shorter life (a few minutes) it might make systematic logging much more hassle. Hope this helps CB

may i suggest ideas about chatroom's safety
for sure i want this chat room to keep going , and want topics to be discussed without " politically correct " restrains about opinions . The real urgency , methinks, is about safety settings in 3 easy steps ; 1) anyone wanting access to chatroom must be fist logged in at dead.net and 2) must first be a registered member with dead.net (with a valid e-mail) , and 3) gagalive/deadnet must install specific settings to not allow access to chatplace by bypassing login and registration at deadnet . These can be practical answers for safety , and to complete this format , a once prior agreement that anyone using chatroom is responsable to never send bugs and viruses at users of dead.net , nonrespect of that clause leading to definite expulsion from dead.net .

As many have noted, no, threatening people is not okay, nor is misrepresenting yourself as a Rhino employee (or anyone else) to do so.

that i read these posts. i have had good and bad experiences in our chatroom, recently very good things have come my way FROM the chatroom, tickets and a hotel room to be exact, so i know there are still good, loving kind folks there. we don't always hafta agree on certain subjects or topics, and there are some that i intentionally avoid discussing in there because i know we don't all have the same point of view. the one thing we DO share is love for the music. other than prayer, the music has been the one constant in my life that i can turn to when i just can't take it anymore. please, any of you that are thinking about leaving us, please, please reconsider. if we keep enough kind folk in there, and commit to not dragging others down with our personal problems (and yes, i am one of those that is guilty of doing this, not intentionally but the chat is my refuge) mebbe we can outweigh the people who don't love the site as much as we do......badger, i'm gonna miss your kind thoughts and words, hopefully you will still use the forums? i love all of you more than you know....you are my FAMILY!!!

I was told that recently, things that I had said, in " Play " an 'Imaginative spacey conversation we were having,' was re-posted elsewhere with some important content changed, someone had changed my words, to cause a very hurtful situation ! I know that this has happened to thers as well. I agree it is slander. We love the chatroom and mostly we love sharing The Grateful Deads Music in there... It should not be a tool, used to harm and manipulate others ! play on

I am sorry TL and Mona and Swan and everyone else, but I am not going near that place again until I can be more confident that i) it is reasonably secure ii) people who use it are identifiable and accountable iii) it is not being taken over by hackers iv) our conversations are not being recorded and manipulated and v) my computer is not vulnerable to attack (the consequences would be catastrophic for me) Some or all of the the claims and threats that have been made may very well be utter bullshit. I don’t know enough about computers to know, and I am not sure how these concerns can be addressed by 'toughing it out' from inside the chatroom. Still, there must be other ways to fix this. By hosting the chatroom for the registered members of the site, Deadnet must have some responsibility for its security. Especially since the main protagonist has even claimed that he is an ‘insider’ who works for Rhino!!

Grate song Ami!!! love it!! Why don't we have a section for song parodies?? ******************* personally, I do not care if someone wishes to call themselves Jesus Christ as their board name, but I wonder if it is in good taste?? being a rude, crude guy myself, even this miffs me a bit; just knowing that some folks take their faith and religion seriously, and I would hope everyone would respect peoples space about serious stuff like that. the fact that it is ALL over is another bummer. I hope the mods would just clean it up so we do not have to waste time seeing it again and again. it did seriously bum me out to be accused of being that poster in a pm, but that is ok, I've been dissapointed and bummed out plenty of times by those I 'thought' I knew. it is either an internet troll or a total nut or someone just trying to stir the pot. I'll say it again, ignore it; which I was doing until I got accused in a pm, and somewhat less clearly accused on the forum itself. there is, of course, a simple way to know exactly who it is, if the site administrators or if the Mods access to the ISP numbers, (internet server provider) numbers, it is ever so easy to trace who it is. proxy servers do not hide that kind of thing, either, so a kind chide might be in order. just a thought there. I think it would be hard for anyone to be funny posting as 'Jesus Christ' though I am sure the real Jesus had a sense of humor. did I ever tell you the joke about the priest, the rabbi, the mullah and the drunk off duty cop?? peace

I have just acquired the final missing link in my 1973 collection. If you thought that was a rather sad achievement you would be in full agreement with Mrs Badger. But hang on, what was that last, hard to find show The Month: October The Day: 25 The Venue: Dane County Coliseum The City: Madison, Wisconsin!

long ago when a jehovah's witness came to the door, I would ask if they could name the 12 disciples. Many came, none entered,,,maybe we put JC to the test. CB, the badger is the missing link- the show is a mere accessory. enjoy your day if twirling. Is that the show with a long and decent Loose Lucy in the first set? Ami

Hey Ya'll...I've been reading through the forums lately probably like most everyone else and seeing all this JC activity and just pondering the bad vibes...I guess I've been torn like most with the same dilemma we all must face from time to time questioning my feelings toward someone else stirring up my shit when it is usually me doing the shit stirring... I'm right with you CCj, I was asking myself all the same questions about being miffed at this mystery guest using a name, a word, to drive a point home about something I can't even follow anymore, because as a card carrying rude crude shit stirrer in the flesh, I guess I should be open to any and all good healthy shit stirring... in recent years I have taken to questioning my own paradigm rather than that of the shit stirrer before going on the offensive about anything, and in recent years I have hardly ever gone on the offensive about anything...its great not being offensive...but the thing is that eventually you come across a situation that just doesn't seem to come full circle...I mean, even if I don't agree with the shit being stirred, eventually I agree with and respect the point of view of the people stirring the shit for whatever reason, and that helps me reach inner peace as well as outward tolerance...the thing I just can't seem to nail down about this JC is that he seems to be opposed to people chatting about good intentions toward a cause, recently he has taken issue with the bickering on the site as well...okay, all in the name of good ole healthy positive shit stirring I guess...but the thing that really gets me is this thing about posting these grand statements to all of us on each forum so that we don't miss it, who knows, but the thing is that posting those things all over other people's areas is just plain stepping out of bounds...I don't know if this JC is aware of the effect that kind of thing has as far as setting himself outside the realm and really just scattering us all around inside here....its just not funny, nor is it getting across the message it claims to be promoting... the real JC never wrote his own gospel.....and I'm not sure but the last time I channeled Pigpen and asked him about the website his response to me was, "what the fuck is the internet?" I agree with JC about the bickering being a bummer, but I agree with everyone else on that one too....anyway, thats just my two cents...I like reading and chatting and stuff, but the JC BS is a little much....time to put on some good music, fire one up, and maybe play a little solitaire instead...I've just gotta have a break from the same ole thing over and over and over.... P.S. Ami, I like the name the 12 disciples question, thats a good one. I hope you don't mind if I use that one next time I get a Jehovah's witness...

is when they made the short version, I dunno whether for radio or single or what, they cut the fabulous organ solo and my favorite verse in the whole thing, i.e. the one foot on the platform, the other foot on the train... Dunno if they did that in England, though.

Martin Scorsese used that song (and many others) to great effect in Casino... And yes, the long version of any song is much better. That's the way we roll... I remember when "Whole Lotta Love" came on the radio (KSAN of course) we always hoped it would be the long version...
