    Found this to be the highlight show of the Spring '77 box. They are all close though. The band is in the same groove each of these five nights and it just seems to be the venue and crowd that are changing it up. These CD sleeves are very nice and would have made the E72 box far, far, better without adding much in the way if extra cost. They would have easily fit in the trunk, too!

    The Godward Way
    Not sure how many of you--if any--are familiar with the music of Daniel Higgs (e.g.: Lungfish, Skull Defekts), but I recently scored a copy of the limited edition LP "The Godward Way." Higgs's solo work harkens back to early music--pre-music industry music--and is probably hard on the casual music listener, but his work is just so...PROLIFIC. "The Godward Way" is a 24-minute "jam" on the long-neck banjo and mouth harp with somew chanting/singing thrown in for good measure. And, as an added bonus, the LP came with a CD copy for easy portability. I have several of Higgs's solo records, and, if you're interested in jumping into that realm, I highly suggest starting with "Say God" of "Beyond & Between." They're less abrasive than such records as "Atomic Yggdrasil Tarot" or "Clairaudience Fellowship."

Badger, I hadn't heard of them either, saw them opening for Drive-By Truckers last fall. They came out playing "Hold On" ... I was dancing almost immediately and did not stop until they left the stage, which is saying something for these old bones. And I walked away with a memento: something frisbee'd from the stage to the crowd at the end of the show -- a setlist written on a paper plate, ended up in my hands.

of WBGO fm since I've been spending a LOT of time in cars lately and they broadcast in my local market, as well as online at www.wbgo.org. If you fancy a jazz fix and can pry yourselves away from the Dead channel on SiriusXM or gdradio.com they are a reliable fix. Even heard them track a selection from the recent David Bromberg/Levon Helm collaboration during the Blues hour (3-4pm ET) as a nod to Levon. Just making a suggestion. If your mother doesn't like it tell her to write her Congressman...

Generally those freebie record company compilation cds are very hit-and-miss -- stuff you love jammed up against stuff you hate, at least in my experience. But...this time through I grabbed a New West Records collection of NPR "World Cafe" live selections, and with a couple of a handfuls of my favorites (Buddy Miller, Steve Earle, Old 97's, Drive-By Truckers, Jason Isbell, The Flatlanders, Tom Morello, Mark Olson & Gary Louris, and more), it was hard to go wrong. I might even give this one a second spin.. Despite the dearth of jams, and despite the WOS vocals that sometimes seem to slice right through my head (I've got a fair amount of higher-frequency hearing loss; you'd think that these sibilant vox would help compensate for my hearing deficiencies, but no, instead they sometimes edge over into white noise territory for me-- a little unpleasant), I'm very much enjoying this one.

Beatles -- Magical Mystery Tour. Not exactly a favorite Beatles album, but I've always loved the non-album singles that Capitol included on the US (now the "standard") LP version of MMT. Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever was the first record that I ever bought, it's still one of the best double A-side singles that I've ever heard. I ran into a "40 best albums released in 1967" list just a little bit ago. I didn't start buying albums until 1969 (too young, no money), so it was a little surprising to me that I had a goodly number of these sitting on my shelf, most in vinyl, and most in vinyl AND CD. The 23rd is a revelation. Own this or the odds may never be in your favor!The 24th is a struggle - Jerry's darn g-string gives him fits repeatedly! But there are plenty of shining moments, including those that wound up on Europe '72. The 25th is back to position "A". I'm listening to it now and, yes, the Feelin' Groovy is as good as it gets. Gloryland Not new, but new to me -- the artist, that is. Checking him out in advance of seeing him open for Todd Snider in a few weeks. What I'm hearing from the album reminds me at times of James McMurtry, of Todd Snider, of Dave Alvin, of Steve Earle. Roosty rocking, great lyrics. The album was recorded in 2009, mixed/mastered in 2010, the copyright says 2012. What took so long? In the DIY land of what passes for today's music business (see this article by David Lowery, long but worth the time: http://thetrichordist.wordpress.com/2012/04/15/meet-the-new-boss-worse-… If you need a reason to support your favorite artists with your dollars, this should drive home the why of it), it probably took that long for Gordon to be able to afford to release the album. And in true DIY fashion, when you order the CD from his website, Gordon signs it for you, personalized if you wish. Not just once, mind you: signed the digipak, the CD itself, and an insert. Nice. And to echo Guitarman: RIP Doc Watson.

Just started set 2, via the archive. The version I'm listening to is a SBD/AUD composite, but its such a great show that I didn't try to fine a full SBD to listen to! I suggest giving it a listen.
