well, bubble bubble bubble, that's a very interesting subject you raise there. There certainly are a lot of victimless acts that are labelled as crimes. And one might speculate as to their true criminality since they are victimless. Kinda thought that the phrase "witchy hairs ripping one" had an overtone of self-deprecating humor to it relating to old age and flatulance...oh well...jus' like walkin' on glass man, gotta take each step real slow and careful like...nah, life's too short!

hey all, saw a note on the Dead Net Central Jam in Tampa, if you're in the area it will be a great time & I highly recommend it, many of the participants are musicians from the Musicians' Lounge on DNC. I'm hoping to hit a future such event, but we have a local gig next weekend. My band is Ghost Pilot, we opened at one of the Dead Net Central Jam shows in Chicago last Sep, you can hear our stuff at ghostpilot.com & myspace.com/ghostpilot, we play around the area for the most part, originals, eclectic covers like Echoes, Zappa's Flower Punk, b-side cuts from the Clash, Talking Heads, etc.

I'm not a band, just a solo singer/songwriter, though I play almost all the instruments on my recordings (except drums). www.jimbalcerek.com myspace.com/jimbalcerek My new album, Playing Life by Ear, is available from the myspace page, the website, and iTunes. So far it's the best representation of the music that has been in my head, and I'm sure there's some Dead influence in there since I was practically raised on their music and have been playing it for as long as I have been able to play anything. I also sometimes play live solo acoustic and have slipped in some Dead tunes. But honestly I'm getting a little tired of playing solo. So if anyone in the greater Philly area is interested in getting together, just let me know.

    Jerry's Guitar Solos
Hey everyone, This is my first post and I must admit, I'm a bit nervous about looking foolish by posting in the wrong place or something. Anyways, I've been a fan of Garcia's brilliant guitar work (as I'm sure all of us are) since first learning to appreciate it. Over time, I've tried to emulate aspects of Jerry's musical expression by transcribing a few of his solos, right now I'm working on his solos from Franklin's Tower on the "One From the Vault" album (totally forgot what show that was from). Working Jerry's solos out has been by far one of the most difficult endeavors I've ever attempted musically, but it's so rewarding, and I'm sure a few of my fellow guitarists on here could probably handle the challenge with much greater ease. While considering this a few weeks ago, I thought of Charlie Parker's Omni Book, in which about 60 of his solos are transcribed. I think we could probably do the same for Jerry's solos, though considering the over 15,000 recorded hours we have of Jerry's guitar work, the project would be much larger than just a book. Originally I had the idea of putting a giant website together devoted to this task of cataloging transcriptions of Jerry's solos. Before even beginning however, I wanted the feedback of other heads out there, in many ways I wanted your approval, as I'm not sure how Jerry himself would've greeted the idea. Let me know what you all think and whether any of you would be interested in helping out.

It's my first post here - how's it goin'?Just thought I'd chime in about the band thing. Isn't the interent neat? My band's at www.reverbnation/thepowergoats.com. I'm the 'frontman' I guess you could say. Our stuff is currently free to download. It's rock - Stonesy stuff since we used to be a cover group. I'm hoping, as we jam more, to get longer, looser stuff happening - but this is what we've got for now. Thanks! Jamie

I'm in this band, called "Crossroads", I play bass & sing lead vocals (a black art, like phil says in his book..), we had a concert last week in our town, Cerveteri, 40 km from Roma, Italia. We play 60'/70' music (and we're rehearsing "truckin" for some new gig in june). The place was small (about 100 people) but hot and the listeners were dancin' all night to this set list: Brown sugar, Dead flowers, Get off of my cloud (stones), The wind cries Mary (jimi), Have you ever loved a woman? (derek and the dominos version) I’ m so glad (cream), Cocaine (clapton) While my guitar gently weeps (fab four) Sharp dressed man (zz top), Fresh garbage (spirit), Little wing (jimi), Heart of stone (stones) I heard it through the grapevine (C.C.R. version), New world blues (gov't mule), Crossroads (cream version), Sunshine of your love (cream), Honky tonk women (stones), White room (cream), Badge (cream) and.. Johnny b. goode (berry) , Jumping jack flash (stones) as encores. Almost all the songs are filled with guitars jammin', since the band's got three guitarists! Have a nice day.

‘Angel headed hipsters’ and ‘holy barbarians’ arise, Venice Gas House Trolley is on the tracks and headed back to you! In a time when spoken word and music performance is rapidly taking shape as a popular form of entertainment, Venice Gas House Trolley stands poised to stake their claim at the forefront of new musical takes on the oldest school around. This three-piece Beat Freak group was formed in Madison, WI out of respect for the Venice West Beat Poetry Scene that flourished in Southern California. The group features Adam Gregory Pergament, a Madison Area Music Award Finalist for Best Artist. At once visceral, exciting, cool and jazzy, the vibe appeals to audiences ranging from finger-snapping cool cats to bohos looking for the next thing in words and music. For more on Venice Gas House Trolley please check out: www.flowpoetry.com. or www.myspace.com/flowpoetry. Adam Gregory Pergament, a two-time finalist for Best Artist (Other) in the First Annual Madison WI Area Music Awards, is a Spoken Word performer who has bridged the gap between poetry and music. His dynamic style of Rock and Fire Flowpoetry combines rhythm, musicality, and a highly condensed depth of poetic language. His delivery on stage makes him one of the most unique and riveting performers on the Midwestern musical and artistic landscape. Adam speaks shamanically through poems of Asian Gods and Goddesses, tells Cowboy stories of the American Wild West and the Railroad Age, and poetically rants and rages about both Love and War. In 2006, he was appointed as the first ever "Poet-In-Residence" at The King Club, Madison, WI`s premier live music dance club. He has performed over 500 times in the USA with Rock and Roll bands, Jazz musicians, and as a solo poet. His current projects include Venice Gas House Trolley (a "Beat Freak" trio consisting of voice, double bass, and percussion) and Rock and Fire Flowpoetry (spoken word with vocal effects, loops, guitar and electric bass). Over the past two years, he led and taught Chime Collective Big Band weekly improvised free flow musical and poetic workshops at The Madison WI Center For Creative And Cultural Arts. In previous incarnations, Adam has played catcher for the University of Minnesota Baseball team, spent five years backpacking throughout Asia and India, earned a Master of Arts Degree in Languages and Cultures of Asia and studied for seven years in the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Buddhist Studies Ph.D program. He holds a black belt in Kendo (the art of the Samurai swordsman). He has performed with such Jazz notables as Hanah Jon Taylor (Chicago’s Artists For The Advancement of Creative Music) and Vincent Davis (Roscoe Mitchell Quartet). He has opened shows for The Steve Kimock Band, Cornmeal, Groovatron, Buck 65, and Claude Coleman, Jr of Ween. He has also appeared on festival billings with The Jerry Garcia Band and Indigenous. My fantacy is that young kids will listen to my music while playing hookey and going up to the mountains for a snow adventure, etc. So . . . enjoy - and I hope more Deadheads listen to these Dead-inspired demos. Well what a nifty little folder we have here! Can't wait to dig into everyone's music and hear what's cookin'... I'm in a band called Voodoo Loons, which you can check out at both of the links below: http://www.voodooloons.com http://www.myspace.com/voodooloons Plenty of streaming tunes on both, where you can sample tracks from our new album "Euphobia" as well as odds and ends, rough demos, and whatnot. New album, you say? You betcha, and there's even some loose GD connections (gonna stretch here) in that our brother Mark Daly sits in on mandolin on a few tracks. Mark is buds with Grisman and has worked with tons of mentionables, and if you check out his page you'll see pics of him rafting down in Costa Rica not long ago with ol' Bill Kreutzmann. DNCer Mike Sokolowski also plays on a track (and you should check out his wonderful music, too). You can find our stuff on iTunes and lots of other outlets, but if you order the CD via our website (only $9.99!) we'll toss in a free bonus disc and free shipping w/in the U.S. WHATABAHGAIN! You're in Europe? Then the USD/EU rate makes the album practically free for you peeps.... act today! Operators are standing by! P.S.- the subject line I stole from an alt-paper's piece on us, which made us chuckle. You can find it and other coverage on the site, too

I have been playing guitar and writing music since 1966. I am now putting together a new band and we are about to record a CD together. I play an acoustic-electric guitar and sing; I will have a bass and flute player and am still looking for a percussionist. My musical style is pretty much my own, but the Grateful Dead are one of my influences. In fact, I am arranging the mechanical rights so I can include a version of Franklin's Tower on the CD. I have also recorded a CD of originals in a rock style; I played all the instruments on that one. Songs can be heard at my website, which is listed below. Gary Blanchard http://www.GBandFriends.com

Hi, All! I have a new Dead tribute band and we're playing on Saturday in Auburn, MA. We're doing a pretty faithful recreation of the late 70's to early 90's Dead sound. Details of the show and recordings from our previous show are at www.fennario.us. Please let me know what you think! I'm the bass player so any tips on being a better Phil would be appreciated!

I am a longtime songwriter/musician from the midwest. My band is the Derelicks. We've been around a long time but don't get out much. We have a song on our latest CD (our 4th)called, "Trouble at the Circus". It's a story song about the last days of the Dead with Jerry Garcia (summer of 1995). I was hoping to get some feedback from Dead Heads and other fans. I have recieved some positive opinions from some in the Dead Head community. The song is available (free download) at: www.thederelicks.com...Any feedback is always welcome....TC/derelicks

Hi folks. I loathe modern commercial music--hate every last bit of it. I can't stand indie--that cheesy corny cornball stuff. My favorite period was 69' through 76' with 73' through 75' being the peak of good rock. Anyway, I am a concept album junkie--loved the albums Wish You Were Here, The Wall, 2112, Caress of Steel, Hemispheres, Relayer, Tales from Topographic Oceans, Welcome to my Nightmare, Tommy, Quadrophenia, and some others I can't think of. I am not in a band--don't plan to be. It would be fun but I am too busy with work & family life. My hobby is playing 2 guitars: nylon classical & fender strat. I used to be a humbucker fan but after getting a strat with overwound tex mex single-coil pickups, I fell in love with it. Anyway, I recently purchased one of these digital multi-track recorder thingies with built-in drums. With this little box, I can pretty much be my own band. I am working on a concept type album for fun that will be divided into "parts" and follow a story line similar to Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony 6. Yes, it will climax to a violent thunderstorm, musically speaking. Part 1 begins with the Overture to Night. It will have classical guitar, strat with various clean & distortion tones, keyboard with various tones, bass, and the digital drums. It will be wet and swampy with reverb. I have no idea when I will finish. Part 2 is complete with Parts 1, 3, and 4 still being modified and re-recorded.

posted to soon. i also wanted to add we have a bitchin record release show coming up sept. 19th in philly @ the Mroom, here's an early review of the record NORTH LAWRENCE MIDNIGHT SINGERS – AND THAT OLD TIME LIVING ROOM SOUND, 5/5 STARS! This Philly jam band features ex-members of Cordalene, and The Elevator Parade. Where as those bands owe their sounds to things like Pavement Husker Du, Weezer, & Guided by Voices, North Lawrence Midnight Singers sound is more inspired by The Greatful Dead, Traveling WIlburys, & George Harrison. If you're a fan of jam bands or that classic folk meets rock sound this might be right up your alley

I have two main musical outlets--one is a group of musicians that started out as a drum circle, then mutated into a free-form jam as a couple of guitarists, a banjo player, a harpist, a flute player, and an electric keyboard filtered into the mix--and me, I play bari and tenor sax as well as hand drums, electric keyboard, and piano, so it gets very interesting often enough that we've been at it together now for about eight years, meeting weekly for "Wednesday night prayer meeting." If you live in the Nashville area, you might enjoy stopping by to participate sometime...ask and i'll give details offlist. My other musical offering is what I call "Brother Martin and the Intangibles"--me and a twelve-track, playing my original songs and recording covers of songs by Richard Thompson, Kate Wolf, the Beatles, and, of course, The Grateful Dead...you can hear most of my music at http://brothermartin.dmusic.net/ Here's the thing....the fat cats have been tightening up the intellectual property laws, and I can no longer just post Beatles songs without paying some agency in New York, even though I am not selling them, just making them available for free download...I have direct agreements with Richard Thompson and with Kate Wolf's estate that it's OK for me to post my covers of their songs....is this permission implicit with the Dead's work (along with taping), or do I need to ask somebody? Sure would like an answer.... thanks...hope to hear from somebody about this soon!

I play the acoustic guitar. I have been for almost 25 years. I was in band here and there but now just play for the benefit of my daughter and friends & family. I do however play the bass with Hugh Ross's ensamble and on his CD that's upcoming. I am a session bassisst just getting back into the groove so-to-speak. I play a 6-string bass or ERB as some call it. my favorite influences include (of course) Phil Lesh and Jack Cassady among many others.. stewart Hamm is an icon... Well that's it. I also just learned LOSER by Hunter/Garcia. 12-14-71' version on acoustic guitar and also on my bass. Well that's all about me.-Jeff

HEY NOW! Well, I'm the guitarist & vocalist for a jamband here in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania called theCAUSE. Now, it's not The Cause (as they're a group of well-tattooed, well-body-pierced, spikey-haired individuals, hence the spelling), just so you know... ;) We play a LOT of Grateful Dead material, as well as some Beatles stuff, Dylan tunes, Phish selections, Janis jams and other assorted goodies, as well as some groovin' original music, too! We've been together almost 5 years (as long as it's been since my last cigarette!) and we're getting tighter each time we play. We only gig about 2x per month, as we're all 40ish and have day-jobs, but we do rehearse every Wednesday night. It's a bunch of fun. You can visit our website at www.theCAUSEjams.com if you like. Our next show is at McGrogan's Taproom in Canonsburg, PA (home of Bobby Vinton & Perry Como, baby!) - a nice, little joint with a great beer selection & WONDERFUL pizza. Always a good time there. It's the smallest place we play - other than our practice room! We are playing on Saturday, November 1st at a great venue in Pittsburgh, P.D.'s Pub. That night ALSO happens to be the night that Rat Dog is playing - just across the bridge about 10 minutes away - at the Carnegie Music Hall of Homestead. They start at 8, we start at 10. We tried sending an email to their booking agent, but no response. We'd sure LOVE it if Bobby, Mark, Robin, Jeff, Kenny & Jay came out and shared in the after-Rat-Dog-fun! Anyway, that's my pipe dream and I'm holdin' onto it...realistic or not! ;) Hope you enjoy the tunes on the sitewide player...here's the setlist from our last show: Saturday 9/6/08 Thunderbird Cafe with Jill Paone Simmons SET I: Fee > One More Saturday Night, Son Of A Preacher Man, Brown Eyed Woman, Next Time You See Me, Ballad Of A Thin Man, Dupree's Diamond Blues, Love Me Like A Man, Bird Song, Mean Mr. Mustard > Polythene Pam > She Came In Through The Bathroom Window > Cats Under The Stars. SET II: Oh! Darling, Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Wharf Rat > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower, Looks Like Rain, Good Morning Little Schoolgirl > I Need A Miracle > Never Alone*, I'd Rather Go Blind > Throwin' Stones > Bertha. ENCORE: Turn On Your Lovelight. * written by Eric "Pappy" Weingrad ~ Pappy "Once in a while you can get shown the light in the strangest of places, if you look at it right."

As The Grateful Dead’s music is, moi ‘tis somewhat eclectic. Here’s a sample of moi’s crap a la Rockin’ The Cradle’s Cool Cats. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7iQRFP_e90 & moi’s official bio Tor Hershman is the world's funniest, macabre, iconoclastic writer/raconteur/poet/artist/historian/philosopher/ and the universe’s most Modest DNA construction. Tor's recordings range from kindergarten hijinks (e.g., "The Lion Farts Tonight”) to scathing satires (e.g., “The Little Bummer Boy”) to wondrous electronic elations ( “XX CS" {a.k.a. “Twentieth Century Symphony”) to astoundingly shocking spoken word works (“AMEN (hotep IV, that is)”). Tor's satires parodies and hisTORical research have been known to bewilder and irritate a few small groups of people such as Jews, Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Satanists, Agnostics, Atheists, the hearing impaired, the hearing unimpaired and Hindon'ts but that's just about all. However, if you enjoy frightfully truthful lyrics that are delivered with intense comedic timing you should enjoy Tor's works to the extreme. Stay on groovin' safari, Tor Hershman

Dog Beaver was initially formed as a duo (Mick Flaire & Kenny Briggs) on February 5th, 1989 inside the Grateful Dead's empty production office at the Oakland Civic Auditorium (currently the Henry J. Kaiser Auditorium) the night before the Dead were to kick off their Chinese New Year/Mardi Gras run. Guarding a bare stage, in an empty auditorium, in the middle of the night, the 2 Bill Graham Presents Bluecoats (security staff) were just fooling around with a pair of synthesizers and a 4-track recorder, and made a recording that they jokingly titled, "We Blew Or Own Minds Once". The first track on the recording was facetiously entitled "March of the Giant Cockroaches". To put it bluntly, it was just 2 guys making a lot of noises, and and putting it down on tape! "The Tape", as it was jokingly referred to, was then circulated amongst co-workers, family and friends, garnering some interesting responses. To follow up with the charade, Mick and Kenny decided to perpetuate the "joke" and adopted two "performing personas" by taking the discarded birth names of Conway Twitty (Harold Jenkins) and Gene Chandler (Eugene Dixon) thus becoming "the two old blues guys" to be known as Harold "Dog" Jenkins & Eugene "Beaver" Dixon! Within a few months time the duo of Mick (Harold "Dog" Jenkins) Flaire & Kenny (Eugene "Beaver" Dixon) Briggs was augmented by 3 other friends & co-workers from the concert security staff that just happened to be musicians too. Added to the pair was Mike Wittwer on rhythm guitar, Mike Thompson on drums, and Gary Lambert on bass. And that became the first incarnation of Dog Beaver, the band! Dog Beaver's first official gig was at the Bill Graham Presents Holiday Party in December of 1989, in what used to be an old prohibition-era speakeasy located beneath the Warfield Theater in San Francisco. It was for that first public performance that the sixth member of Dog Beaver, Tom Pinatelli was added on lead guitar, solely on the recommendation of his wife Maggie, who also worked at BGP, in the accounting department. Maggie had mentioned to Mick that her husband Tom, who although he hadn't been in a band for years, was in her Top 5 guitar players ever! Upon hearing that glowing endorsement, Mick invited Tom to come play with Dog Beaver at the Holiday Party, sight unseen, no audition necessary! The addition of Mr. Pinatelli to the proceedings that night turned out to be most fortuitous for The Beav', as they now had a lead guitarist that could hold his own amongst the best axemen in the area. In keeping with the concept that led to Dog Beaver’s origin, the band has recorded nearly every single jam & performance, from it’s inception to the present. In order to tell who had played on a given recording, each member of Dog Beaver was given a number, based on their order of entry into the band, a number that each band member would retain for life! Flaire, who had provided the gear that first fateful night, took No. 1 for himself, co-founder Briggs was issued No. 2, Wittwer No. 3, Thompson No. 4, Lambert No. 5, and last but certainly not least, Pinatelli was given No. 6. Since that time Mike Wittwer has left this mortal coil in 2001, Mike Thompson and Gary Lambert both retired from actively playing in the band, but none the less have retained their numbers, and were replaced by Tree Leyburn (No. 7) on bass, and John Olson (No. 8) on drums, both no longer actively playing with the group, yet also retaining their respective numbers. The present incarnation of Dog Beaver has been together since 2004 with the addition of Guapo (No. 9) on drums, bass & guitar, Chip Usas (No. 0) on bass, & Brian Craft (No. 00) on drums & vocals. No longer being content with just "making noise", Dog Beaver now does long, trippy, extended psychedelic cosmic blues jams, and occasionally will break into actual songs with the "real" lyrics and everything, albit somewhat altered, LOL! The acronym they use to describe their genre is FIJ (prounounced "feedge"), which stands for Free-form Improvisational Jams. When it comes to The Beav', as they are affectionately known, there is no right or wrong, good or bad, it just is what it is! They are not confined by the concepts of tonality, rthym, timing, or even ensemble playing for that matter! Their on-the-spot compositions exist by virtue of the fact that there are multiple, and not necessarily related, things going on at the same time, in the same space! Dog Beaver, disputedly, coined the term "it is what it is", which has now become a catch phrase for all things that defy description or definition! Starting in 1994, with the re-opening of The Fillmore in San Francisco after a 5 year re-modeling process (the building was heavily damaged during the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake) Dog Beaver has become the unofficial house band of the Fillmore by playing in The Fillmore’s Poster Room Lounge once a month for the last 15 years! By virtue of their extended engagement there, they now hold the dubious distinction of having played The Fillmore more times than any other artists in the history of the building! That’s more times than the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother & the Holding Company, & the Quicksilver Messenger Service combined! In keeping with their “underground” roots, which is not a calculated move, but a none the less very real situation, Dog Beaver after 19 years together, still has no management, no record label, no CD releases, no website other than this My Space page, and only in the last few months, thanks to their live collaboration with Electrorganic (Nick Howard) now have a video clip. Their primary source of publicity is by word-of-mouth from those who have stumbled upon one of their infrequent live performances. So you, by virtue of having just read this bio, are now hip to “The Beav’”! Cheers! www.myspace.com/dogbeaver

but I cannot recommend them strongly enough. And I've said it before but I'll say it here, I'd much rather listen to Tom Pinatelli play (he was in another band, regrettably gone, with a friend of mine) than any lead guitarist in any Dead-related band I know. So anyone who has the chance to check them out, do it!

Man. It is so hard to find like-minded players... and then, you find them and they FLAKE! I should be finishing up a new CD right now, but my on/off music partner of 25 years decided to do this other gig and shine me on completely... so... Is anyone looking for a solo acoustic guy to open their shows? :D http://iacmusic.com/larree

The name of my band is the Jason Ferguson Project or more commenly called the JFP. We have been playing in the New York City area for almost three years. We play from the Garcia bands catalogue. This includes songs written and/or performed by Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, the Band, Eric Clapton, Hank Ballard, Irving Berlin, Jimmy Cliff, Bob Marley, Elvis, Chuck Berry, etc. And, of course, Garcia/Hunter. The JFP began with three musicians leaving the Grateful Dead tribute band Half Step, and occasionally perform with them. Those members are Jason Ferguson (guitar and vocals), Gary Knippel (electric piano and Hammond organ), John Benedetti (drums). We presently include Eric Fayer on bass. We play monthly at our "Keystone" known as Beau's Bar, 54 Broadway in Greenlawn, Long Island, NY. We will be performing there this Friday night, Dec. 12th beginning around 10 PM. We are "probably the best band you've never heard of" as of yet. If you'd like to hear you're favorite music played in an intimate setting, come out a see us. Your support will keep the music alive. Check out our website http://www.thejfp.com. We have live audio, photographs, and listings for upcoming gigs. You can sign up to be on our mailing list. Thanks Gary Knippel electric piano and Hammond organ.

Mostly, I'm gigging solo, as it's difficult to find musicians who want to play anything but Top-40 Pop-Country, Hip-Hop and Top-40 Pop-Rock here in N. Texas...otoh, there are a lot of gigs for me to play, and some are band-gigs, so for those, I hire a bassist and a percussionist by the gig. This is nowhere nearly as satisfying as working w/ the same folks every time, and, obviously, one can't really get any serious arrangements or fun improvs happening. Anyone in the N. Texas area interested in jamming/eventually gigging w/ a 53-yo folk-rocker with a full PA, all the other gear and a lot of gigs to play? http://terryallanhall.com
